Chapter 1: The Beginning
Jessica sat in her makeup chair beside Susan as they talked and rehearsed lines for their scenes of the first episode of Feud. Jessica was quite nervous as she had not been on another TV show since her last season of American Horror Story.
Ryan walked in as he seen the two ladies rehearsing as he was happy to have them finally together.
"Are y'all ready?" Ryan asked them.
"Sure, I can't wait to get into character." Jessica said
"Let's go then." Ryan said as the two ladies followed him to the front of the set.
"He seems so damn happy." Susan whispered into Jessica's ear.
"He always was on the set of American Horror Story." Jessica said.
"Even when all that blood and gore happening?" Susan said.
"Oh yes, none of it was real darling so he just watched us do our own thing." Jessica said.
"Well, I don't believe you'd have to dress up as a nun anymore." Susan said.
"Joan was not a sinister example of the word 'godly'." Jessica said.
"Yeah, I hope you won't hit anybody with a wire hanger." Susan said
"Me either. I have had to cane people though." Jessica thought back to season two of American Horror Story.
"Yeah and that resulted in that young man's genitals being visible in your face." Susan laughed.
"Between the time we read our scripts and getting ready, he barely had time to get that cover up on." Jessica said.
"Well, do you still talk to him?" Susan asked as she lit up a cigarette.
"Evan?" Jessica asked.
"No, Garfield. Yes, I meant Evan." Susan said.
"Only during the same time Ryan has us all together." Jessica said.
"He's cute, you know?" Susan lifted a perfectly arched eyebrow up.
"He's way younger than me and besides, I heard he's dating or engaged to Emma." Jessica said.
"Admit it Lange, you like him." Susan said as Jessica blushed.
"As a friend, yes." Jessica said.
"How long has it been since you went out on a date?" Susan asked.
"Too long for you to ask me." Jessica said.
"Besides, you're not getting any younger my dear." Susan said.
"And you are?" Jessica asked.
"Well, how about you come to my house for dinner tonight and you call Evan?" Susan asked.
"No thank you, I'm busy tonight." Jessica said.
"Doing what?" Susan asked.
"Getting myself prepared for next week's episode, besides I believe my children and grandchildren are coming to see me and I have things to make." Jessica said.
"Jess, you're doing it again." Susan said.
"What am I doing? Besides trying to avoid this subject." Jessica said.
"You're putting up that wall of tough exterior." Susan said.
"That wall of tough exterior keeps me from getting hurt. I know what's best for me and I like being single, it's better than being lied to and cheated on." Jessica said as she lit up a cigarette.
"Just give him a call or a quick text.'' Susan said.
"No, no. I will do what I think is best and that's not calling or texting my co-stars." Jessica said.
"You text Sarah all the time!" Susan exclaimed.
"That's different than me texting him and saying something like "I know it's been awhile. Do you want to hangout." Jessica said in a stern voice.
"You like him Jess." Susan said.
"Yes Susan, I do like Evan but as a friend and my co-star that I worked with." Jessica said.
"You just majorly friend-zoned him.'' Susan said as she shook her head.
"Yes I did and that's all there will ever be, friendship and nothing more. Now, let's break into our new characters and let's not discuss this anymore.'' Jessica said
"Fine." Susan said as they read over there scripts quickly.
"And action." Ryan called as they begun filming the first episode.
They got through the first episode and as always, Jessica and Susan were phenomenal.
The cameras stopped rolling and Ryan produced champagne and glasses to everyone.
"Great episode everyone! Now let's toast to our favorite leading ladies, Jessica and Susan." Ryan toasted
"To Jessica and Susan." Everyone toasted their glass flutes in the air.
Jessica and Susan got out of their hair, makeup and wardrobe as they exited the stage entrance.
"Are you going straight home?" Susan asked as she walked behind Jessica to her car.
"Of course, where else would I go?" Jessica asked.
"Well, maybe you should go see Sarah and see if she's busy." Susan said.
"She and Holland are busy this weekend, I do believe." Jessica said.
"You need to let your walls down Jess before it's too late." Susan said.
"I'm totally okay with being by myself Susan. I have not had a man in a long time and I'm happier without one." Jessica admitted
"Okay, then I will stop asking when you will find a man." Susan said.
"Thank you for that." Jessica said.
"I do worry about you being alone though." Susan said.
"Oh c'mon, you do not worry about me." Jessica said as Susan looked at her.
"Really?" Jessica asked as Susan nodded her head.
"I have been on my own for awhile now. My kids are grown and I just love what I'm doing now." Jessica said.
"Which is?" Susan asked.
"The show and my love of photography." Jessica said.
"I know, but that won't keep you warm at night my dear." Susan said.
"I'm fine." Jessica said.
"Are you sure?" Susan asked.
"Jeez Susan, what do you want me to say?" Jessica asked.
"Something." Susan said.
"I don't need a man in my life to keep me happy. I have had enough heartbreak and I don't want to go through that again. I try to avoid it as much as possible and I don't know if I'll ever date again, not after what I went through." Jessica said.
"Okay, well I have to and meet some friends down at that little bistro Italian restaurant we always go to." Susan said.
"Okay and I'm going home to eat, shower and go to bed." Jessica said.
"Alright, I'll see you next week." Susan said.
"Alright dear." Jessica said as Susan hugged her and walked off to her car.
Jessica sat in her car and she was the last one to stay there as she sat there as the sound of her phone buzzing jolted her from her thoughts as the text was from Sarah.
Sarah: *How was your first day on the set?*
Jessica: *Great! I'm tired though. How about yours dear?*
*Same, we ran some lines today and acted through our scenes.*
*I hope you like the first episode?*
*You know I will!*
Jessica had a weird question pop in her mind as she felt her mind thinking of Evan.
"Why am I thinking of him?" Jessica asked herself.
She looked back down at her phone as she decided to ask Sarah a question.
*Can I ask you something and don't tell anyone, okay?*
She waited for the little three dots to pop up as she knew Sarah was all ears.
*Of course! What's up?"
*Someone today asked me if I would be interested in dating again?*
*What?*
*That's what I thought.*
*Hold on! I'm calling you right now.*
Jessica started her car and pulled out of the stage side parking lot as she felt her stomach grumble with hunger.
Sarah called as she put her on speaker phone through her radio.
"Who was this "friend" that asked you if you were ready to date again?" Sarah said as she sounded like a high school girl wanting to know from her best friend which boy she liked.
"Do you really want to know?" Jessica smiled as she laughed.
"Yes! Now, tell me!''
"Susan.''
"Sarandon?"
"Yes, how many Susan's do know?"
"Two, but why?"
"I guess because I'm getting older and I haven't been on a date in ages."
"She said that?"
"Not exactly, but it has been awhile."
"I could help you find someone."
"Yeah, no man wants a working woman who lives by herself with a schedule like clockwork."
"I know someone." Sarah said in a giddy like voice.
"Who?"
"He worked with us. Think about it?"
"I'm not going on a date with Ryan, that would be awkward."
"No, keep thinking."
"Joseph?"
"No darling, he's married."
"Keep thinking though." Sarah said
"I give up!"
"Evan."
Jessica stopped at a red light and thought for a moment.
"Isn't he engaged to Emma?"
"No, they've been broke up for quite some time."
"Sarah, he's younger than me."
"So, he likes you."
"As a friend, yes." Jessica said as the light turned green and Jessica was almost home.
"Maybe as a friend, but there is nothing wrong with going on a date with a friend."
"Who happened to have once played my son." Jessica said
There was a long pause as she heard Sarah moving things around in her kitchen.
"Jess, it's been a long time since you went out a date, just go together as friends."
"Sarah, I don't know."
"Jess?"
"Sarah."
"If you want me to, I will talk to Evan for you and see what he says."
"I don't know." Jessica said
"Just give this a chance. Please?"
"Alright fine! If you want me to go on a date."
"Evan is just the sweetest Jess! He also happens to have a crush you."
"No he does not!"
"He flirted with you and you punched him in the face."
"Do you know how long it's been since I have had someone flirt with me?"
"How long has it been since you have had..."
"What?"
"How long has it been since you have had sex?" Sarah asked as Jessica arrived at her place.
"Too long."
"Jesus woman!"
"Well, I have had so much going on since Sam passed and my kids needed me, so sex has been way on the back burner." Jessica disconnected her phone the radio and pressed it to her ear and gathered her things.
"You need a good night with a good man."
"And this man being Evan. If you and everyone is so heart set on this idea that we'll connect."
"You never know Jess till you give it a shot. Just go for it honey!" The other voice belonging to Holland, Sarah's girlfriend.
"Okay, if you can somehow get Evan to agree to your plan, then I will go."
"Yay! He'll be so thrilled honey." Sarah said
"You three are a pain in my ass." Jessica said as she got out of her car and locked it before she walked away.
"Who's the third one?" Holland asked
"Susan."
"Well, I agree with both of them. Just go with your gut feeling and your heart will follow." Holland said as Jessica unlocked her apartment door.
"Okay, but don't make me regret this." Jessica said
"You won't darling, I promise!" Sarah said
"Well, it's late and I just want to eat, bathe and relax." Jessica said as she slipped her heels off beside her door.
"Okay, well I will talk to you later and you're new beginning will start soon."
"My new beginning will start when I start getting grey hairs."
"Whatever!"
"I'm getting off now, bye." Jessica said
"Bye!" Sarah and Holland laughed as they pressed the end button.
Jessica settled for a salad and ice water as she looked around and thought it would not be a bad idea to going out with Evan for a night.
She picked up her phone and called her daughter Hannah.
"Hi mom."
"Hi honey, are you busy?"
"No."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course.''
"What do you usually wear if you haven't been on a date since the dinosaur ages?"
"What?"
"It's for a friend of mine."
"Depending on where you go."
"What if it's to dinner?"
"Maybe something classy and elegant."
"What color?"
"Red or blue. There chic and classy colors and nude or black heels go with any accessory."
"Thank you honey."
"You're welcome mom. How are you?"
"Oh I'm fine."
"How did your first day of filming go?"
"Great!"
"I'm glad."
"Are you busy next week?"
"I have a few things to do, but I always have time for you." Hannah said as Jessica smiled.
"Well, the reason I called to ask that advice was because Susan and Sarah have this idea that Evan wants to date me."
"Wait a minute."
"I know."
"Are we talking about Evan Peters?"
"Yes."
"Mom! You should totally go to dinner with him!" Hannah said excitedly.
"Really Hannah Jane?" Jessica asked
"Yes Jessica Phyllis." Hannah chuckled
"Well, I just want you and Shura's opinion.''
"Mom, you deserve to be happy and don't let someone ruin that."
"But, no matter what. I will always love my babies."
"And mama, we love you. You always supported us when we did something, so go out and do something for yourself for once."
"Paris would be lovely to go back to."
"Maybe you and Evan should go to Paris together." Hannah said as Jessica laughed.
"I guess I will go on a date with him, if he even wants to, that is." Jessica started doubting herself again.
"Mom, anyone would love to go out on a date with you. You're Jessica Lange, you're still gorgeous and very sophisticated may I add."
"Some men can't stand a sophisticated, hard-working, independent woman."
"Well, any man who is actually a "man" will." Hannah air quoted
"Should I call Walker and ask him for his opinion?"
"He'll just tell you what me and Shura tells you all the time. We want you to be happy mama and if a man knows what's good for him, then he'll be good to you, because if he doesn't, then we know how to dig a hole."
"I always used to tell you that."
"I know and I listened."
"Well, I decided that I need a long, hot bath and a long rest. I will talk to you later baby."
"Alright mama, I love you." Hannah said.
"I love you too baby." Jessica said.
"Bye."
"Bye baby." Jessica said as they hung up.
Jessica washed the dishes as she heard her phone buzzed.
All she seen was a number and wondered who it was.
She unlocked her phone and seen a message.
*Hello?*
Jessica froze as she hoped that it was someone she knew.
She decided to answer back.
*Hello, may I ask who this is and how do you have my number?*
She waited for the reply back as she took her phone with her to the bathroom as she set it down to draw her bath water.
She filled it up at the approximate amount with bubbles, Epsom salt and a lavender and chamomile bath bomb that she got from her grandbabies for Mother's Day.
Her phone buzzed and she picked it up to read it.
*Hey Jessica, it's Evan. Sarah gave me your number and I'm quite nervous about talking to you.*
"He's nervous about talking to me? Oh no! But why would someone be nervous about talking to me?" Jessica talked to herself.
She thought about what she was going to say as had it.
*Oh no! Don't be. How are you doing?*
Jessica leaned back as she smiled to herself.
"Maybe this won't be as bad as I though it would be." Jessica heard her phone again.
*Great! We're filming another season and I have been rehearsing and practicing my lines. How are you doing? I miss you being on set and I just wish you were on this season.*
Jessica smiled as she felt herself blush.
"I feel like a school girl." Jessica laughed to herself.
*I miss y'all too. I have a couple of new projects I'm working on now and maybe more next year too.*
Jessica sent her text as Evan read it.
*Sarah asked me something today as I just wished I could of asked you, but the last time I flirted with you, it did not end as I planned.*
Jessica felt herself enjoying her bath as her phone pinged again as the text was from Sarah this time.
"Are y'all talking?"
"Yes.''
"I hear wedding bells haha."
"In your dreams!"
"We'll see."
Her phone pinged again as Evan sent an emoji.
"🙇"
*I'm done reading my script for the night."
"Really?"
"It's SO long!"
"Which character are you portraying this time?"
"Andy Warhol and some other characters. Will you be watching?"
"Maybe, depends on my schedule."
"Okay, well Sarah asked me something today and I thought about it and I believe her.''
"What did she say?"
"She told me to ask the most beautiful lady in the whole world out."
"Oh goodness."
Jessica got out and drained the water out of her tub.
She went into her bedroom and changed into her comfy clothes as she was happy to finally lay in bed.
She wanted to sleep as she heard her phone start ringing as she picked it up and noticed Evan was calling her.
She almost hit the reject button but she answered it.
"Hi.'' Jessica giggled
"Hello Ms. Lange." Evan said
"How are you?" Jessica asked as she did not know what to say to him.
"Well, I ate some leftovers from last night and finished reading my script. How about you?" Evan asked.
"I ate a salad and had a bath, now I'm laying in bed."
"I seen the first episode of the show today. You were amazing Jessica, like always." Evan said as Jessica smiled.
"You like Joan Crawford?"
"I like you as Joan Crawford, heck you're better than her."
"I'm no such thing. She's an artist and a legend."
"So are you. No one can be half as good when you're there."
"Not even Susan Sarandon?"
"Well, you both are great, but you're a natural."
"She is too."
"You're both talented, but it's you I can't take my eyes of." Evan said as Jessica admired hearing those words come from him.
There was a long pause of silence as Jessica was grinning from ear to ear.
"Jessica?"
"Yes?"
"Would you like to be my date to the Paleyfest?" Evan asked her.
"Why me?" Jessica asked curiously.
"So, I can tell everyone I got the most beautiful lady in the whole world walking beside me." Evan said as Jessica blushed.
"Yes, I would love to be your date to Paleyfest." Jessica said as Evan got up and started doing a victory dance.
"I have a feeling you're dancing?" Jessica asked
"Well, I was until my foot slipped on my new rug."
"Oh no!'' Jessica giggled
"Is Jessica Lange flirtatiously giggling?"
"Maybe."
"Well, you're adorable." Evan said
"Now, you're flirting with me Mr. Peters." Jessica laid under her comforter and turned out her lamp.
"It's only fair and there is no harm in it. We're both single and I don't think I want to go through another tumultuous relationship again." Evan said as Emma entered his mind.
"I'm sorry about Emma. I read the tabloid at the store one day and I just felt so bad for you." Jessica felt her heart speed up.
"Yeah, it's been a hard year for both of us." Evan said
"Yes it has." Jessica said as she thought about Sam.
"How would you like to go out this Friday? If you're not busy. I will totally understand if you can't." Evan asked her.
"I would love to go out! It's been awhile since I really went somewhere besides with my kids, Sarah and Holland, plus Susan." Jessica said as she was feeling hopeful with every conversation they were having.
"Would you like to go to your favorite Italian place? I remember you always got full on breadsticks before your entree came." Evan said as Jessica smiled.
"Breadsticks makes me happy. There a way to my heart."
"I miss our corny jokes we used to tell each other."
"You were always there when I was down. I never thanked you for that."
"Asylum was my favorite season."
"Why?"
"Because when we would dance, your smile lit up every room."
"Even when I was Sister Jude?"
"Even then, you were the most beautiful woman in the room."
"I wonder what would of happened if I had not died there towards the end?"
"If I could have wrote the script part from you, I would have married you and we could of had kids toward the end."
"I would have loved that, but you already had two kids."
"So? I wanted to marry Jude and had a couple of babies with her."
"What about me?" Jessica asked.
"Jess, do you another baby?" Evan asked.
"Maybe." Jessica said as she smiled at the thought.
"Well, I would have a baby with you."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I wanted to ask you out so many times, but we never had time together. Alone."
"We've known each other for nine years."
"I know and I'm so glad that I met you."
"Well, let's see how everything goes and if it plays out and the cards are right, then... Let's see what happens after." Jessica said
"So, if I were to ask you to be my girlfriend now, what would you say?" Evan asked as she sat up and turned her light on.
"Are you asking me to be... What I believe you are?"
"My girlfriend?"
"Yes!"
"Walk out of your bedroom." Evan asked as Jessica was confused.
"Why?"
"Just do it." Evan said as Jessica cautiously got up out of her bed and walked down the hall.
"What next?" Jessica asked sweetly asked.
"Open your door to reveal your surprise." Evan asked as she did.
She opened the door to see him kneeling down and holding an arrangement of breadsticks and flowers.
"I thought you were home, having a victory dance." Jessica said as she talked into her phone as he smiled.
"Nope, I was at Olive Garden and I seen the Valentine's Day arrangement of breadsticks and I thought to myself "I'm not about to let the most beautiful woman in the whole world, sit at home on Valentine's Day, wondering why she has to spend it at home." Evan said as Jessica smiled and wiped tears from her eyes.
"Happy Valentine's Day to you too." Jessica said.
"Now, hang up and step closer to me."
"I'm cold already."
"Come here baby." Evan said as they hung up and she stepped closer to him.
Evan kissed her as they groaned in the feeling of being able to hold her.
"Now, here's my proposal Ms. Lange, will you do the honor of being my girlfriend?"
"Yes!" Jessica said as she pulled him into another kiss.
"To our new beginning." Evan said as he fed her a chocolate covered strawberry.
"To our new beginning darling." Jessica pulled him inside and he kicked her door shut.
