Think of a broken vase, with all those slender cracks and ugly chips in the pristine ceramic. Josie Lawrence felt like the vase. She was broken and maimed, but there was nothing anybody could do about it. She was unsalvageable. Sometimes, for temporary relief, strips of cello tape and a few band aids could stick the vase back together again. Hide the taint. Cover the dents. Eventually, though, the cracks will strain too much and the ceramic will shatter.
Delicate objects do have a tendency to break, after all.❞
