❝You just can't handle the fact that I'm better at surfing during a storm then you are.❞

From the outside, Caroline Davenport looked like the typical privileged rich girl. She was blonde and pretty and if you saw them from afar, you'd think they had the perfect life. Her parents were big-shot lawyers who were often away from their home in the Outer Banks, leaving her and her twin-brother mostly to their own devices, and to the outside world, their family looked perfect.
But what lurked beneath the surface and behind closed doors was a secret to everyone. For their family wasn't as innocent and perfect as one would perceive.
It was currently summer which meant that Caroline expected to spend her days surfing or reading on the beach, and her nights getting too drunk to stand at one of the Kook parties, alongside her brother, Caleb, and their friends. Well, they were more his friends and she was just along for the ride. She preferred to hang out with Kiara Carrera who came from a Kook household but hung out with the Pogues, who were people that most Kooks wouldn't be caught dead hanging out with. Caroline usually included herself in the latter, mainly because they did not want to endure further wrath from her parents for associating herself with "those dirty Pogues". However, she definitely broke that rule last year by hooking up with one of them, but she's tried her hardest to keep that event under wraps.
Caroline used to be close with Kook Princess, Sarah Cameron, but after the two engaged in a brief relationship that ended up crashing and burning due to the interference of her brother and her ultimately denying the existence of their romance, the two no longer got along. Caroline, however, got along with Sarah's current boyfriend, Topper, who was the only one out of her brother's friend group who she actually liked.
"Care. Are you daydreaming again?" The voice of Topper brought her back to the present. She currently was sitting by the side of her pool, with Topper and her brother while they tried to endure the heat of the day.
"Sorry, what?" Caroline snapped their head over to him.
"She was definitely daydreaming." Caleb laughed, as he handed over beers to the two of them. Caroline happily accepted hers even though it was just past mid-day.
Caroline narrowed her eyes at him as she took a swig of the beer, wincing slightly at the coolness of it, "I'm just tired. Can we have one day where we don't go to a party?"
Topper raised his eyebrow at her, "You're the one who made us go to that party last night, Care."
Caroline rolled her eyes, "And I regret it, Top. Besides, didn't you have like six beers last night? How are you even alive right now?"
Topper shoved her shoulder lightly, "I guess my tolerance is just ridiculously high."
"Oh please. You wish." Caroline exchanged a look with her brother who laughed.
"Yeah, remember last week when you passed out?" Caleb laughed.
"Okay I passed out because I was tired. And besides, who knows what people are spiking the drinks with?" Topper attempted to defend himself.
"You were literally drinking out of cans that weren't open until you opened them yourself." Caroline laughed.
Topper shoved Caroline lightly, making her fall into the pool, spilling her beer all over the concrete, "Shit! Topper, what the hell? You made me spill my beer."
"Whoops." Topper shrugged as he and Caleb burst out laughing.
Caroline leaned their head back in the water, "I hate you guys."
"You love us!" Caleb insisted.
"You better watch your backs!" Caroline warned, floating on her back.
"Hey, where the hell is Sarah? I thought she was coming over today." Caleb asked, looking around.
Caroline immediately stood up in the water, "Wait. Sarah's coming over?"
"Yeah she was supposed to." Caleb answered, looking at Topper.
Topper grabbed his phone from his pocket and looked at it, "Radio silence."
"You guys invited her without telling me? You know I don't want to be here if she is." Caroline said, leaning her elbows up against the side.
"It's been a year since you guys had that fight. Can you at least pretend to get along?" Topper asked.
Caroline looked at him, "Seriously?"
"Or not?" Topper mentioned, looking at Caleb in confusion but Caleb didn't say anything.
Caroline had only told her brother about what had happened between her and Sarah and why their friendship had ended and she knew that Caleb had never released what happened to anyone. Even to Topper, and for that Caroline was very grateful.
"You clearly do not know how girls work." Caroline insisted, "Anyways if she's coming over then I'm leaving. Besides, I was going to go surfing today anyway."
"You can't go surfing, there's a hurricane coming in." Topper said, still looking at his phone.
"What are you talking about?" Caroline asked, "I think I would know if a hurricane was coming in, Top."
Topper handed his phone over to her, "See for yourself, Care."
Caroline wrinkled her nose as she read through the news, "Great, love hurricane season."
"Right?" Topper exclaimed.
Caroline handed the phone back to him and shrugged, "You two seriously need to stop acting like I'm not going to go do it anyways."
"You're going to get yourself killed if you're out there during the storm." Caleb's eyes widened at his twin-sister's insinuation.
"You two worry too much." Caroline shrugged.
"And we have a right to, Care. You're always doing stupid shit like this." Topper stated.
Caroline rolled her eyes, "Okay name one thing."
"Last week, when you literally decided to swim during a thunderstorm." Caleb suggested.
"Or a month ago, when you literally almost totaled your car trying to race Rafe." Topper added.
"What do you mean, almost? I did, total my car." Caleb said, but didn't seem phased at all.
"But you still have your car." Topper stated.
"It's not the same one, Topper." Caroline explained.
"Okay this just all proves our point, Care." Caleb said.
Caroline sighed, "You two are no fun."
""I'd rather be called not fun then have you end up dead because of how much 'fun' you're having." Caleb shrugged.
"Okay, I'm starving." Caroline said, pulling herself from the pool, "I'll go see if we can order food, you know, before the hurricane gets here."

Of course, Caroline was notorious for not listening to the warnings given to her by her friends, and so as soon as Topper went home that evening and her brother was busy in his room, she snuck out with her board.
By this time, the wind was already howling and the rain was starting to pour down in droves, but Caroline was undeterred. Sure, surfing during a hurricane was probably one of the stupidest ideas she had had in quite awhile, but the Davenport girl wanted adventure, and so they pushed their car through the rain and towards the beach.
Once she was there, she was shocked to see two other people staring at the waves. She went over to them, not sure what her intentions were, until she saw that they were two Pogues.
"John B? Pope? What the hell are you two doing out here?" Caroline asked, having to yell over the noise.
The two Pogues stared at her in confusion before John B answered, "Surfing, what does it look like?"
"It looks like you have an incredibly stupid idea." Caroline said, tilting her head.
"You're out here too." John B commented.
"What an astute observation." Caroline said, turning her head to look at the waves, "Those waves do not look good, but I'm not one to shrink from a challenge. How about you John B?"
"Challenge accepted, Davenport." John B answered.
"You two are idiots." Pope commented.
"Perhaps." Caroline said, and looked over at John B, "We doing this?"
"Those are not surfable waves." Pope added, "Yeah I changed my mind, I am not doing this."
"Says who?" John B asked and looked at Caroline, "You coming?"
Caroline smirked, "Wouldn't miss it. Oh and Pope, if we die, please don't tell my brother how? I don't need him killing me in the afterlife."
Caroline and John B turned and ran towards the ocean together. Honestly, Caroline was sort of glad that she'd stumbled upon John B and Pope at the beach because if she was doing this alone she'd be a lot scareder than she currently was.
Caroline paddled out into the ocean, struggling not to get knocked off by the strong current.
"Shit. You okay, Davenport?" John B called over the sound of the crashing waves, and high gusts of wind.
"Yeah peachy!" She called back, pointing to incoming waves, "Bet you can't take that one."
"Yeah I'll take that bet, Kook." John B answered.
Caroline gnawed on her lip as they followed him into the on-coming waves. John B wasn't too successful with his attempts to surf these waves but Caroline managed to stand up and stay standing for a whole twenty seconds, which she found to be a personal success.
"Whoo!" Caroline cheered, paddling over to sit on their board, near John B.
"Where the hell did you learn to surf like that?" John B asked but she just winked at him.
"I'm not sharing my secrets with you."
"Typical Kook. You probably had some fancy lessons or some shit." John B commented.
"You just can't handle the fact that I'm better at surfing during a storm than you are." Caroline shrugged.
John B had stopped listening to her though and he was squinting through the rain. He pointed at something, "Did you see that?"
"What?" Caroline asked, twisting her body to look in the direction that he was pointing. She could barely make out a white shape. She squinted to try and make it out, "Is that a boat? Is someone trying to leave during a hurricane?"
"There's no way." John B shook his head.
"Okay I am not staying out here any longer. Pope's right, these waves are not easy to surf." Caroline said and started paddling to the shore, "You coming?"
"Yeah." John B nodded, following her.
Once they got to shore, Caroline split away from the two Pogues and headed home in her car, to wait out the rest of the hurricane, not knowing that she had just experienced the first event that would lead to her life changing forever.
