An Understanding
Cody
I heard a knock on my door and figured it was Dean. I opened it, and that's not who was standing on the other side.
"Caroline, you're back early." I said.
"Is it too late? I hope I didn't wake you." She stands there with her hands together hanging down in front of her. She has so much poise and class.
"No, come on in." I stepped aside, and she walked into my room. I shut the door, then turned to her.
"Is everything okay? I hope you had a good dinner." I said.
"Yeah, that was just an old friend. A son on one of my dad's colleagues, actually." I said.
Was it a date?
"Have a seat, would you like a drink?" I asked.
"No, thank you, I just stopped by since we didn't get a chance to talk earlier. Actually, I just saw Dean on my way in." She said.
Damn, what did he tell her?
"Congratulations on the baby, I'm sure Jessie is so excited to be a big sister." She said.
"Did Dean tell you?" I asked.
"No, actually it was June. I know how much she wanted a baby, so I'm sure she's happy." She said.
Just as I thought, June just had to go there, didn't she? I'm just going to ignore this for the time being.
"June shouldn't have said anything." I said.
She just looked at me with confusion, then shook it off. "Anyway, June isn't handling our friendship too well, so I think we should respect her, and not spend as much time together as we did at home, so please forgive me if I seem distant. If the tables were turned, I'd appreciate the same respect." She said.
"Listen, Caroline, please don't take anything June has said at heart. There's more happening back home than what she has told you. Plus, I would never take advantage of our friendship." I said.
"I just felt sorry for her, she seemed so down and that's not good for her or your baby." She said.
"Our friendship has no bearing on why she is depressed at the moment. Please, just let me worry about June, and the two of us pick up where we left off. We have a lot of work ahead of us." I said, and took a seat next to her. "Tell me how the last few weeks have been. I've not been able to write a damn thing." I said.
She smiled. "I had a few ideas, but they're in a notepad still packed away."
"That's great, we will leave for Vegas on Sunday, so we can work on it while we're on the bus, but for now, we should get some rest and get ready for tomorrow. Unless you want to hang out for a while?" I asked, in hopes she says yes.
"We should get some rest, it's been a long day. I'll see you in the morning." She stood.
"I'll come get you in the morning, and we can have breakfast," I said.
"Sure, what time?" She asked.
I told her, and she went to her room. I felt much better and got a full nights sleep, which is something I haven't had in weeks, but I'm almost sick about letting her think June is having my baby.
I knocked on her door hoping it will just be us for breakfast, and yet again she took my breath away the moment she opened her door. In all the years I have known June, that has never happened.
"Good morning." I said.
"Good morning, thanks for inviting me." She shut her door and we walked toward the elevator.
"I hope you slept well." I wonder what she looks like when she sleeps.
"Well, I wasn't spooned by an Irish beast that snores and slobbers all over me. I'd say that's the best I've had in a decade." She said.
I laughed, understanding she was also talking about Matt.
"I often wonder what it would be like to have one bed at home to get used to and miss when I travel, hotel rooms are getting old." I said, then I thought about it and looked at her. Maybe home isn't where you are but who you are with at night.
We rode the elevator down making small talk, then got a table in the restaurant.
"People are staring." She whispered.
"I'm sorry, this isn't like home. People recognize us, but it's not because they're going to start rumors, but they think I look familiar." I said.
"Do you get approached a lot?" She asked.
"More than I would like, I guess." I said.
She didn't look comfortable.
"If it makes you feel better, we can eat in private next time." I offered.
"It's okay, I guess I should get used to the groupies." She smiled.
"They can be a little much at times. Ah, hell, they're always too much. The guys who've never been married love it, but I don't even think I would have liked it back then." I said.
"June wasn't a groupie?" She asked.
I laughed. "God no. We met before I ever made it big. Dean and I were playing at an auction house that was owned by her father."
The waitress came and took our orders. She sipped on coffee, while I drank juice. I hate coffee, its disgusting.
"These ideas, are they additions to what we already wrote, or new works?" I asked.
She set her mug down. "I don't think I could finish the ones we started without you. I started a new one, but it's not done yet. I'm wondering if I should wait to show you or not." She said.
I smiled. "You need me in order to write the others?"
She blushed. "We're a team, aren't we? Plus, we have great writing chemistry, well musical too." She took another sip of her coffee.
I let my mind travel where it should never have gone. If we have this much chemistry, I guarantee making love to her would be well beyond amazing.
