Chapter 6: The Light in the Darkness
Rudi and I were in our respected Braviary suit and Swanna suits while Hilda rode on her Zekrom, Hilbert rode on his Reshiram, and N was on his Braviary. Unlike Rudi's Braviary, this one seemed to have more of a loving nature. While I was starting to think Rudi's Pokémon was starting to warm up towards me, I couldn't help but to feel him glaring daggers my way every now and then. I still didn't understand why he still felt that way around me, but if there was one thing Nurse Joy taught me, it was to kill the Pokémon with kindness.
If only that worked.
I flew between Hilda and Hilbert, feeling a bit smaller to scale. Then again, I was flying next to two Pokémon that Team Miasma had control over at one point, not to mention, I had to battle both of them as well.
My eyes ended up staring at Zekrom, who wasn't in its right mind when we last battled. I mean, granted, it couldn't control what it did, but I couldn't shake the feeling. There was a Pokémon so powerful it could injure something. Not just injuring either, but it was enough to make a Pokémon disappear due to the pain.
Hilbert must've taken note on this as he cleared his throat. I turned to look at him, seeing the boy looking down at me, asking. "Why do you wear a Swanna suit when you do these things? Wouldn't it be quicker just to go out instead of wasting five minutes to change?"
"Because I'm a Pokémon Nurse, I don't want people associating me with this," I explained. "Besides, if word get out, I wouldn't get two seconds to myself."
"But Rudi seems to be dealing with it well," Hilda commented.
I looked back, seeing as N and Rudi flew behind us. They were talking to each other about something, but due to how far back they were, I couldn't really hear them. All I could do was watch as Rudi's Braviary shot daggers my way.
Wait, I'd have to start calling him Braviary Man again, wouldn't I? Gosh, after three years, that would take some getting used to.
"He enjoys the spotlight," I explained as I looked back at Hilbert. "I don't. Which reminds me, whatever you do," I looked over at Hilda, "call me Swanna Girl. The only people that know about me being this are you guys, Rudi, his family, Nurse Joy of Nacrene City, and Officer Jenny of Nacrene City."
Hilbert let out a long whistle. "That's a long list already. How does Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny know?"
"Long story," I muttered, before I pointed down to the city below. "There's our stop."
Swanna dove down, realizing this was it. As for the other Pokémon, they all followed suit, flying down to the small city as fast as possible. Because of that, Swanna and I ended up tailing behind since Hilbert and Hilda had the two Legendaries while both Braviary sped up flying beside me.
The city was clearly under attack by men and women dressed in black everything. The only thing that got me was that they were wearing black sunglasses over their eyes. It wasn't even sunny out, and there wasn't any snow that was on the ground that people would need them.
Why were they wearing sunglasses?
My eyes quickly snapped over to a group of men who were trying to pull Nurse Joy out of the Pokémon Center. I didn't say a word as Swanna flew me straight towards them, dropping me down to the ground. None of the men or women seemed to have noticed me, as they were trying to drag Nurse Joy out of the Pokémon Center, which wasn't going very well seeing that her Audino was using Double Slap on anyone or any Pokémon that got near her.
I didn't think I'd ever seen her Audino use an attack on anyone before.
"Leave her alone," I demanded.
The group turned around, giving me a better look as to what I was up against. There were six of them: four men and two women. I couldn't see what color hair the men had, but as for the girls, they had their hair tucked into their hats so that no one could get a single detail as to what they looked like.
"Ah, if it isn't Swanna Girl making her return," one of the men said as he threw out a Liepard, while his colleagues threw out Liepards and Swoobats. "Nice of you to join us."
Swanna flew in front of me as I drew in a quick breath. "I don't know what you want—"
"And you're not going to know," one of two female grunts said, assuming they were all grunts as they wore the same thing. "Swoobat, use Air Slash!"
"Dodge it, and use Ice Beam!" I yelled.
My Pokémon flew up, dodging the attack, but as he did, I saw Liepard leaping with a shadowy claw. To make things worse, that Pokémon wasn't the only Pokémon I saw that was coming after Swanna. There was a whole swarm of them. My eyes widened as I realized this whole thing was planned.
"Quick, Double Team!" I yelled.
Swanna duplicated himself, causing many of the Dark and Psychic Pokémon to hit each other in midair. While it happened, I was able to see which ones decided to gang up on my Pokémon. Two Swoobats—none of which I thought was the one before—and four Liepards.
Six on one, not a good idea.
"Now use Water Pulse," I yelled.
"Counter with Air Cutter," The grunts with the Swoobats yelled.
"And hit it with Shadow Ball!" The ones with Liepards added.
There was no way around this as the Swoobats managed to knock Swanna's Water Pulse down while the Liepards were throwing multiple Shadow Balls to hit Swanna head on. All it took was one hit for them to find the real Swanna.
How was that even possible?
Luck?
"Swanna, Nurse Joy is counting on you," I encouraged. "Now show them your ice beam!"
I watched as all the grunts smirked. That wasn't a good sign, was it? Still, my Pokémon managed to hit one of the Liepards, which should've been something that was going in my favor.
Without instructions, the other three Liepards used the frozen one to climb on top of it and leapt into the air. My eyes widened. That was their teammate! Did they really just let one of them get frozen so they'd have something stable to jump on? That was just downright wrong.
"Quick!" I warned, "Use Protect!"
My Pokémon surrounded himself with a protective shield that caused the other Pokémon to fly backwards. The Swoobats had attacked as well, but their attacks disappeared the minute it touched the shield.
"Now use Water Pulse!" I yelled.
Swanna listened to my order, but I realized at that moment, the grunts weren't there to tell their Pokémon what to do. They were just battling by themselves. I looked around, seeing Nurse Joy running back into the Pokémon Center while two men were following her, trying to kidnap her once again.
"Swanna, keep going! I'll be right back," I assured.
There wasn't a response as Swanna turned around and hit one of the Swoobats with an Ice Beam. I smiled. Okay, we were doing great here. I just needed to find a way to get Nurse Joy out of trouble. I ran as fast as I could, weaving myself around the Pokémon that were fighting.
Before long, I found myself soaring straight into the ground, hitting my head against the cement. It hurt, but as I touched the part of my head that hurt the most, I realized there was no blood, meaning I was lucky.
I quickly sat up, just in time to see a black boot swinging towards me. My eyes widened as I rolled out of the way just in time to dodge it. Holy Miltank! Hilbert and his friends weren't kidding when they said Team Oblivion stopped at nothing when it came to these things.
Hands quickly grabbed my arms as another one pulled my hood from the top of my head, revealing the black braid that my hair was in. With my hair exposed, I felt another hand yanked it, causing me to look up right at one of the grunts who was cracking his knuckles.
"This is going to be fun," he said as he pulled his hand in a fist.
My eyes squeezed shut, not knowing how to get out of this. I had two people holding me upright, each one of them was holding an arm while one of them pulled my hair. There wasn't any way out of this.
Hilbert was right. I needed to do more training. It was just against what I stood for as a nurse. I had to help people, that was the good samaritan law all nurses had to follow. Hurting someone would go against that, which was why I had to keep this whole thing a secret, but with my face practically exposed, I had a feeling that was going to be a lot harder than usual.
That was when I realized the impact never came. I opened my eyes, seeing another grunt holding the arm of the one that was going to punch me. If he was a part of Team Oblivion, shouldn't he be fighting with them instead of against them?
"Boss said he wanted her unharmed," the new grunt said, before looking at me. He didn't look impressed. If anything, he looked a bit bored. I guessed I didn't see what his eyes were doing, but the thin line of his lips said it all. It was a bit different than the ones that were beating me up. "I'll take it from here."
I didn't know how this guy had authority over the others, but I was quickly thrown to the ground. Once gone, I threw my hood over my head and started to crawl away. I was about to jump up to my feet and run when something pulled the end of my cloak. It looked like I was going to need a new Swanna suit or something. Had I known things were going to get this physical, I might have risked going out in my regular clothing. I looked back, watching as the newer grunt bent down.
Without even thinking, I balled my hand in a fist and punched him right in the jaw. He didn't seem fazed by it, despite the sound it made, but it was then I realized I must've done something wrong as my hand started to cramp up and felt painful.
The grunt quickly lifted me up and swung my hands behind my back, pushing me towards the Pokémon Center. As he pushed me against all the fighting, he leaned in so his face was right next to my ear.
"Word of advice," he said, "If you try and punch someone again, don't tuck your thumb in. You'll end up breaking it."
My eyes widened as I felt another rush of pain. Why didn't anyone tell me that sooner? I tried escaping the grasp, but the grunt didn't seem to mind as he pushed me into the Pokémon Center, where I found Nurse Joy crouching behind the front counter while Officer Jenny and her Herdier stood in front of the desk.
I'd seen Officer Jenny a handful of times, but seeing her standing there with her Pokémon was a bit of a frightening sight.
"Let go of the superhero," Officer Jenny growled.
"Gladly," the grunt said as he pushed me towards her.
I stumbled on my own two feet, but I quickly turned around and grabbed another Poké Ball. Despite not wanting anyone to know who I am, desperate times called for desperate measures. As I stood up, I realized the grunt was already running out of the Pokémon Center, and ran through a wall to get out.
My eyes widened. How in the Distortion World did he manage to go through a wall as if it wasn't even there?
"Are you alright?" I heard Officer Jenny asked.
I nodded my head, shoving my hurt right hand with the Poké Ball in it behind my back, covering it with a part of the cloak. "Fine. Better question is are you two alright?"
Officer Jenny nodded. "I'm going to get Nurse Joy to safety. I'll be back as soon as I can."
"Sounds good," I said before running back out of the Pokémon Center.
Once out, I realized most of Team Oblivion was already retreating. The only ones fighting was N against one of the Liepards, and I'm not talking about a Pokémon battle either. This Pokémon was scratching his face until his Trainer returned him to his Poké Ball and quickly ran as fast as she could.
Sweat poured from my forehead as I started to hear myself panting. I didn't think I'd ever witnessed something quite like that before.
It just affirmed that Team Oblivion was a team to be looking out for.
"Swanna Girl!" I heard Braviary Man shout.
I turned around just in time to see him wrap his arms around me. Due to my height, I was able to hear his heart pounding against his chest, faster than mine was going at the moment. I quickly exhaled, not knowing what to do.
"Don't worry me like that again," he whispered. "I saw what happened, and I tried to get you out of there, but—"
"Don't worry, I'm fine," I assured, before he pulled me away. The minute I was arms length from him, my eyes widened. "What did you do?"
Rudi looked right at his left shoulder, seeing part of his suit ripped just enough to see blood running from it. He didn't seem bothered by it as he shrugged.
Only, when he shrugged, he winced a bit.
"You're coming with me," I said. "We're stitching it up."
He didn't argue as I pulled him into the Pokémon Center, finding Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny hugging each other as the pink haired woman was in tears. Here, I thought Officer Jenny was going to take Nurse Joy to a safe place.
Nurse Joy quickly turned her head. Her swollen red eyes widened as she saw us. Without thinking, she pushed the officer out of the way and ran towards Rudi and me.
"We need to get him treated right away," Nurse Joy explained, quickly straightening up.
I nodded my head as she quickly took Rudi towards the back to get him stitched up. When she left, I quickly looked over towards Officer Jenny, who returned her Herdier into his Poké Ball.
"I'll see you around," Officer Jenny said as she quickly walked past me and out of the Pokémon Center.
As she walked out, Hilda and Hilbert were walking inside. My eyes widened as Hilbert tried supporting his friend as much as he could as the girl was grabbing her lower abdomen in pain, her face scrunched up in pain. I didn't say anything as I quickly ran to Hilda's other side and gently placed my hand on her back.
Hilda was beat up badly. Her black coat was torn, exposing a part of her bruised arm while she limped. I looked over towards Hilbert, who was genuinely worried. Unlike Hilda, Hilbert seemed to be fine. The worst thing that happened to him was that he had a busted lip.
"You said you're a nurse, right?" Hilbert asked as I lead the two into one of the backrooms.
As we passed the first room, I looked inside, seeing Rudi taking off the top part of his suit so Nurse Joy could have a better look at the gash he had gotten. My cheeks started to turn red, so I quickly turned my head away.
"Pokémon Nurse," I corrected, "but in my training we learned a little bit about healing people for those Trainers who tend to be reckless."
"You'd probably be better than N's sisters," Hilda muttered under her breath.
N had sisters? Why did that surprise me? Hilda and Hilbert both talked about their families a lot. Despite them looking similar to each other, they weren't related at all. In fact, they both came from opposite sides of Unova, only meeting when Hilbert and N battled each other.
I knew everything about them, from where they grew up to the number of siblings they had. As for N, he hardly said anything about his past.
"You will be able to heal her, right?" Hilbert asked as we turned into a room.
I didn't answer as we lifted Hilda up onto the small table. She took her hands off of her abdomen, and lifted her shirt a bit to let me see it a bit better. My eyes widened at the gash, as it was deep, probably hitting into some vital organs too.
"Hilbert," I warned, "You might want to turn around and close the curtain on the window. Hilda, keep holding that spot, okay."
Both brunettes nodded and did as they were told. While they did their jobs, I tore off my mask and cloak and turned around to grab the necessary tools I thought would work for the operation.
This was a job for a doctor, not some Pokémon Nurse, but seeing how much time we had, I would just have to do my best. After all, Hilda would go to a hospital after this was all over.
By the time I was done and set the tools on a side table beside me, I saw Hilbert holding Hilda's hand. I took a deep breath, not wanting to say what I had to.
"Hilbert, you'll have to get out of the room. This procedure is going to be painful," I informed.
Hilbert shook his head. "Don't you have any anesthesia for it or something?"
I shook my head.
"Then I need to be here." Hilbert fought.
"Please," Hilda begged, looking up at me. "Just let him stay."
I nodded my head, looking over towards the young man. "You'll have to be careful and do exactly as I say."
"Roger that," Hilbert replied as I started my work to treat Hilda to the best of my abilities.
