Chapter 5: Oh Joy...

Joy always knew to do the right thing. She studied hard for her entry exams that would be coming up within two years, helped Nurse Sylvia around the Castelia City Pokémon Center, even made sure Trainers were treating their Pokémon with respect. By doing the right things, good things would always come back in full circle.

That was what she always thought, and she wasn't wrong. There were just some things that were out of her control. She did the right thing back at the Pokémon Center when she noticed the attack. It was just bad luck that she had to suffer the consequences of being kidnapped in the end.

The young girl was terrified of what was going to happen next as she reflected over her actions. Joy wanted to do what was right, that was what she was taught to do. Back in Sinnoh, the place where she grew up, her mother told her how it was their duty to do whatever they could to help others. As a Pokémon Nurse, it was their duty to help out, even when it seems impossible. The lesson continued when she started studying under Nurse Sylvia's direction. Even though the young nurse wasn't a Joy, she seemed to have followed the same principle. Nothing seemed to be a second thought for her. If it was the right thing, then her mentor would do it without hesitation.

Joy strived to be like her. It's why when the sketchy people started to throw out Pokémon, she didn't run and hide. Even without a Pokémon, the young girl leapt out into battle, picking a fight with one of the intruders. The girl loathed violence. She  thought it was pointless to battle, but she knew she could use her skill to slow them down. Her hands tried to pry a Poké Ball from one of the stranger's hands, only for her to get thrown to the ground and quickly tied down with rope.

That didn't stop the girl. She remembered how she yelled for the Trainers to get out of the way and to call Officer Jenny. She was also going to warn them to call her mentor as well, but it was too late.

Fearlessness was a foreign concept to Joy. She looked up to her mentor, who had no fear. If a Pokémon came into the Pokémon Center, Nurse Sylvia wouldn't hesitate to do anything, even if that Pokémon was a Bug-type Pokémon. Joy almost laughed at the thought as she remembered her older sister, who was a now a Pokémon Nurse in Snowpoint City, would've screamed at the sight of a Bug-type Pokémon. Like her sister, Joy was afraid of many types of Pokémon: Bug-types, Ghost-types, and Jigglypuff.

Joy never showed her fear when she helped Nurse Sylvia with those Pokémon. She wanted to prove that she could be a good Pokémon Nurse one day, and wanted to be the very best at her job. Thing was, Joy now started having her doubts as she felt her heart racing.

The girl had no idea where she was at. After being kidnapped, tied up, and having Ducklett tape slapped against her mouth, Joy couldn't hide the fear. Tears were rolling down her face as she curled up into a ball. All she knew was that she was in a dark van with tinted windows. She said a silent prayer, praying that the Pokémon Center would be fine, that she would be rescued, and that things would be back to normal.

Even as she wished for all that to happen, Joy knew it was a long shot. It had been a while since Swanna Girl and Braviary Man even made an appearance. Joy was almost positive Unova was safe when they stopped saving the day since there was no more trouble going on. True, Joy did know part of the truth of why that happened. She personally knew who Braviary Man was.

That was when a horrifying thought entered Joy's mind. What if Rudi, the man behind the mask, no longer wanted to be Braviary Man? She knew Rudi bragged about his days of being Braviary Man, but what if he did so because he was done being a superhero? What would happen next?

Her thoughts shifted over to the other superhero. Joy always wondered who Swanna Girl was. The young girl even begged Rudi to know the secret identity. Even when he denied that he didn't know who she was, Joy knew deep down he did. Joy just started to worry if something happened to Swanna Girl, and wondered if that was why Rudi stopped being Braviary Man.

Fear consumed the girl, and it worsened as the van jerked to a sudden halt. Joy could feel her breath falter. She could hear the voices of her captures outside the van, and it scared her. Whatever they would do to her next, she didn't want to know. All Joy wanted was to be back with Nurse Sylvia and Rudi.

When she thought that, she realized it was all her fault. She pushed Nurse Sylvia to have her take care of the Pokémon Center for just one day. Nurse Sylvia warned her it wasn't a good idea, but Joy was more stubborn than a herd of Tauros. If she had an idea set in her mind, she wasn't going to let anyone change it. Maybe she should've listened and had a nurse watch over. It was Christmas though. While it was normally the busiest day of the year, Trainers were smart and were home for the time being. They'd never come to the Pokémon Center.

Even then, the Pokémon Center ran shorter hours. It was the day that should've been perfect for Joy to prove how much she had learned under Nurse Sylvia's guidance, but that wasn't the case.

The voices eventually ceased for a moment. Joy did her best to stop her crying. When she finally found a way to stop, the back door of the van swung open, which forced a harsh breeze of cold air to rush in. It was then Joy realized she was still in her nurse dress she would always wear. It had short sleeves and the skirt cut off right above the knees. The girl pressed her knees closer to her chest as she looked up.

There was a huge group of men and women, who wore the same outfit. It consisted of a black jacket, with matching, pants, sunglasses, and a beanie. Joy wished she would've dressed more appropriately, but she didn't plan for this to happen. Then again, how was she supposed to?

"You've got the wrong one," a voice sneered behind the group.

A woman with dark hair pulled in a low ponytail, who stood in the middle of the group, looked back. "Our bosses said they wanted the Castelia City Nurse. This is her, isn't it?"

Joy's heart stopped for a moment. She knew who they really wanted, but she was confused as to why. Nurse Sylvia was the smartest, kindest, and most charismatic nurse around. There was nothing she couldn't do. There was nothing she ever did wrong. Joy started to even wonder would they even want Nurse Sylvia of all people.

The brunette was pushed to the side as a man pushed his way to the front. He looked just like any other member of the group, but his lips curled downward in an ugly snarl that scared Joy.

"Yes, but this is merely an apprentice, but don't worry, we can still make good use out of her."

He didn't say another word. All he did was snap his fingers. At the simple gesture, Joy felt her heart race once again. Two rather large men crawled into the van and grabbed Joy by the arms, jerking her out. Had it not been for the Ducklett tape slapped upon her mouth, Joy might have cried out in pain.

Instead, she did everything she could to hide her fear. It was hard, especially since her eyes were bloodshot and her chest was rising and falling at a fast pace.

She was forced to stand in front of the man who talked before. He looked down at her, and when he did, Joy had to mentally remind herself to relax. She tried thinking of all the times Nurse Sylvia would tell her how to deal with a dangerous looking Pokémon. It helped calm her nerves a bit. All Joy had to do was remain as calm as she could.

"You know Sylvia Gray, don't you?" the man asked. He didn't wait for an answer as Joy's eyes widened in recognition of the name. "You're not from Unova either, are you?"

Joy's fear intensified. All she wanted to do was run away and get out of there, but it was impossible. Even if her arms weren't being held by two strong me, her ankles were tied together while her arms were tied behind her back.

To make matters worse, the man in front of her grabbed one of her pink looped pigtails, slowly pulling it out of the ponytail holder it was in. Joy didn't want to think or imagine what was going on in this man's mind. In the corner of her eye, she could see a whole group of people smiling maliciously at her. There was no way Joy could've been brave. Her body shook as she tried to concentrate on her breathing.

"Let me tell you a little story about Swanna Girl and Braviary Man, the two that ruined Team Miasma's plan three years ago," the man continued to speak. "Your mentor was Swanna Girl, and if she plans on stopping Team Oblivion now, you will be the one getting hurt. I wonder, how much does she value your life?"

For a moment, Joy nearly opened her mouth to protest. She wanted to argue and tell him that there was no way that Nurse Sylvia was Swanna Girl. The real Swanna Girl was missing. Rudi would've known if the nurse was Swanna Girl. Nurse Sylvia would've had a Swanna.

As Joy thought it over, she had a sudden realization. Three years ago, Swanna Girl went missing. It was about the same time her mentor went on a journey to Kalos and started her journey as a Pokémon Nurse. Her and Rudi dated, and even the young girl could see how much they loved each other. Rudi would do anything for her. He even invented a Miltank-milk free Castelia Cone for her since Sylvia was allergic to milk. Was it possible that Sylvia didn't want anyone to know she was Swanna Girl?

That was when Joy thought of the last factor that would've debunked it. Unlike any Pokémon Nurse, Sylvia had two Pokémon: an Audino and a Swanna. Nurse Sylvia had a Swanna, just like Swanna Girl did...

It was then Joy realized that all couldn't have been a coincidence.

(-o-)

"Good," Hilbert praised as he crossed his arms. "Again."

I sighed, feeling the sweat pouring down my body. Even as Swanna Girl, I didn't have to go through this much training. Then again, besides the Pokémon battles I had to do between Rena, Landon, and Rudi, I didn't really train at all.

At least, not this kind of training. I stood up, wiping the sweat off my forehead. After what happened with Team Miasma, Team Plasma, and even Team Flare (which I had to deal with twice in Kalos. Luckily, they weren't too much of a bother) I just thought evil organization would have Pokémon do all their dirty work.

This wasn't what I signed up for.

It was just Hilbert and me. Rudi watched for a bit, but as I looked to where he was standing, I realized he went missing. It was probably was embarrassed that his girlfriend was being beat up so badly.

Yes, beat up. That was what we were being taught here: how to fight. Rudi, probably because of his many years of experience with Rena, didn't have to learn how to defend for himself. I, on the other hand, had a lot of work to do.

It didn't help that I had to learn from Hilbert, who, like Rudi, was a head taller than me. Why did I have to be so short? Most of the time, I was fine with the height difference, but all Hilbert had to do was grab me like a sack of potatoes and throw me onto my back. Trust me, he's done it plenty of times already.

I just didn't get it. Why couldn't I go up against Hilda or even N? I mean, Hilda was about my height, it would have been more fair that way, and unlike Hilbert, N seemed to have been built like a string bean. Hilbert stood in front of me, taking off his signature blue jacket and tossed it to the ground to reveal a black shirt, one that was drenched in sweat.

"Don't worry," he always said. "I'll go easy on you."

"Yeah, right," I muttered as I just stood there, not preparing myself to fight.

The brunette raised an eyebrow. "Come on, we're not stopping until you get this right. Look, your boyfriend even left, so there's no pressure now."

I shook my head. Honestly, I was giving this my all, so I wouldn't make a fool of myself in front of him. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to be working out very well.

It was then I realized something.

"Did Rudi tell you we were dating?" I asked.

Hilbert shook his head, as he stood up. I didn't tell him or his friends the status of Rudi and I just because I didn't trust N. Maybe I should have, but after what happened the other day with him finding me in Rudi's kitchen, well, I just decided to keep my guard up.

It had been a week since we'd all moved over to the underground hideout. Whoever built the place wasn't planning to have eight people over. Landon and Wendy shared a room. Rena, thank goodness, stayed at her place in Nimbasa. That left the three rooms between the remaining five of us, so I ended up sharing with Hilda while Hilbert and N stayed in another.

That left Rudi a room to himself.

"No," Hilbert told me, "N figured it out, which is kind of surprising considering he doesn't pick up on that sort of stuff."

"Oh joy," I muttered, "What's his deal anyways?"

Hilbert shrugged. "He lived a sheltered life. His story to tell, not mine, though..."

The boy fell quiet, and I realized where he was getting at. I grabbed the braid my hair was pulled into and brushed it over my shoulder.

"He told you, didn't he?" I asked.

Hilbert nodded. "Sorry, it's not my business, but if you don't mind me asking, how long have you been having these nightmares?"

"Three years," I said, "Give or take the few months they've stopped."

His eyes widened. "Three years?"

I shrugged. "Nightmares are common, especially after traumatic events, even though that's usually common for PTSD. Not saying I have that because I don't need help. Knowing my past with Team Miasma, I wouldn't be surprised if that's my way of dealing with it."

Hilbert shook his head. "No, it's not that, it's more of the fact that I've been battling with them for three years. It's been three years since Team Oblivion had Krait join their team. Hilda says it'll—"

"Krait?" I asked, feeling my pulse quicken at the name as I took a deep breath. "As in Hunter and Archer Krait?"

The brunette shook his head. "As in Shade Krait. If they were related, I'm sure Shade would've broken them out of jail."

I nodded my head, as I tried remembering everything about Team Oblivion. They didn't make attacks public, until, of course, they attacked the Pokémon Center. Most of their attacks were kept secret and at night. That was what made them so dangerous. Only those that were hurt by Team Oblivion knew of their identity as something scared them so much that they couldn't even speak about it. The only exception was Hilbert and his friends. What we did know was that they stole Pokémon, caused nightmarish dreams to their victims, created fear, and that that they stole some legendaries from other regions.

Luckily for us, Hilbert and Hilda both had control over Reshiram and Zekrom. Downside was that was they were all we had.

If the Krait Twins were still in jail, that meant they didn't have any part in Team Oblivion's plan. They would've released them a couple of years ago, and in a way that people wouldn't have known.

"It's just a coincidence?" I asked.

Hilbert nodded his head. "The only thing that isn't a coincidence are the nightmares. They're about Team Miasma, aren't they?"

I didn't answer him. Instead, I looked down to see myself in the outfit I've seemed to wearing more regularly now that I've been outside the Pokémon Center. It consisted of simple grey yoga pants, a plain blue tank top, and a pair of matching tennis shoes. It wasn't anything special, but it worked.

The boy sighed. "Look, I'm not good at this kind of stuff. I'm not going to force you to do the same. N just worries."

Before I could respond, my phone started to ring. I kept it in the single, back pocket of my yoga pants. Unlike most people, I carried my phone wherever I went, rather than carrying an Xtransciever as Rena made a neat adjustment to it. Anyone could get ahold of me. It worked as the Pokémon Center phone, so Trainers could easily contact me wen needed. Just as long as they had an Xtransciever, they could contact me. There were very few numbers that were actually saved on my phone. Seeing a three letter name on it, I answered.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Sylvia..." Nurse Joy of Nacrene City's voice shook. "We...we need your help. The Pokémon Center, it's being targeted. We...we need you to come and stop. O—Officer Jenny is doing the best she can right now, but there's too many of them."

"Don't worry," I assured, "We're on our way. Just stay calm and stay safe."

I didn't let her say a word as I hung up and started running out of the room. Hilbert wasn't far behind, and I didn't need to look back to know.

First Joy, and now Nurse Joy. Either this Team Oblivion was after Pokémon Centers, or they wanted to personally target me.

Either way, they were just going to have to deal with Swanna Girl.

Author's Note:

Question time! Next chapter is going to have a battle scene coming your way. Are you excited? I am! So, being that it's a major battle, and in honor of the fight scene you got to somewhat witness in this chapter, what is your favorite fighting type Pokémon? This is a tough one for me, but I love Riolu. I mean, the Pokémon is so cute and when it evolved, completely awesomeness right there. Thoughts?

Hope you're enjoying the story and having a wonderful day!
