Chapter 27: Decisions...
"You all have five minutes until that Pokémon Center of yours blows up. Maybe less. Tick-tock," The voice echoed in my head as he walked away.
For a millisecond, I froze, not entirely sure on what to do. I came to find Rena, Hilda, and Hilbert and get them to help Rudi, as there seemed to be more problems there than here. If I didn't freeze earlier at the sight of Yveltal, I could've gotten here faster.
That split decision just proved that I had to keep going, so I ran in the direction of where the Castelia City Pokémon Center was. I had five minutes. That was plenty of time for Swanna and me to go and get whatever we needed out of there. I was sure the Nurse Joy that was currently working there had no clue. If there was a Nurse Joy, then there were Trainers and Pokémon inside as well.
I needed to get them out of there.
I was about ready to turn down a street when someone grabbed my arm and yanked me back. I tried to jerk my way out of it when another person grabbed my other arm. When I looked back, I realized it was just Hilbert and Hilda standing there with my arms in their grasp, doing anything and everything to keep me from leaving.
They didn't understand. That Pokémon Center meant the world to me. Even if I was no longer a Pokémon Nurse there, it was still my center. I would do anything to make sure that place didn't fall. This made me feel like I was going through deja vu. I'd had plenty of nightmares of the Pokémon Center bursting in flames. I would do anything to make sure that didn't happen.
"Sylvia, calm down," I heard Hilda calmly state.
"Let me go!" I screamed. "That's my Pokémon Center. I need to make sure everyone's okay. I need to make sure that the Pokémon get out safely."
"Sylvia," I heard Hilda quietly beg as I jammed my foot into hers.
The brunette let go, leaving me a free arm to punch Hilbert repeatedly in the arm. I forgot about all the training I did with him. Right now, I needed to make sure he'd loosen his grip, so I could leave.
If I was counting right, I only had four minutes and fifteen seconds until my Pokémon Center was no more.
As I threw another punch at Hilbert, the young man grabbed my wrist and twisted it behind my back. I was about ready to stomp on his feet, but Hilbert was faster. He was the one that kicked my leg, forcing me down to the ground with my arms behind my back. If that wasn't enough, Hilbert sat behind me on my knees.
No matter how much I struggled, I couldn't get away from him. Not to mention, this guy was too tall and too heavy for me to flip over myself.
"Let me go!" I bellowed. "I need to get to my Pokémon Center! There's people that need me!"
"Shut up and listen!" Hilbert yelled. "That thing you saw wasn't for the Pokémon Center; it was the same thing as Nox's invention, the IB. That thing can't kill anyone, and it definitely can't blow up anything either. We've been battling them for years now. They've never blown a Pokémon Center up, and they're not going to start."
I looked back at him, glaring into his brown eyes. "Did you forget about them kidnapping Joy or nearly taking out the Nacrene City Pokémon Center?"
"That was to get a rise from you, and look, you're doing exactly what they want," Hilbert stated.
"Easy for you to say," I hissed. "There's no reason to want me. You're the ones with the legendaries! So let me protect my Pokémon Center. You three go make sure Rudi's doing okay. I'll be fine on my own."
"Tauros shit!" Hilbert cursed. "They know that without you, they'll win, so don't fall into their trap. The Pokémon Center will be fine, I promise you."
"Then let me go," I demanded.
Hilbert scowled. "You are really something. There is no way in the Distortion World I am letting you do that. Think about what Rudi would do if you got hurt."
"Good!" I screamed. "He shouldn't care about me right now, not when we are on this mission. If I die, at least no one else will be hurt! The world might be better off without me since all I ever do is make the wrong choices!"
Everyone froze for a moment. I felt Hilbert's grasp slowly loosening. I took this as an opportunity to jab my elbow into his rib cage which forced him to stumble off of me. With Hilbert distracted, I crawled away, gradually getting up on my face and running into a full sprint.
Who would care if I was the one who got hurt? At least no one else would be. I didn't want anyone else to get hurt, not after what had happened last time.
So, I ran and ran until I saw the Pokémon Center.
But I was too late.
I dropped to my knees in the middle of the street. Everything I had ever worked for was literally up in flames. I watched as Nurse Joy and a group of Pokémon Trainers running out of the building. Those who had Water Pokémon did their best to put out the fire, but it didn't do much.
Tears stung my eyes as I did nothing but watch. I felt useless. How was I supposed to be Swanna Girl if I couldn't even save my own Pokémon Center?
Swanna nudged his head into my shoulder. I turned to look, seeing Lethe and some Team Miasma members fighting a gang of Team Oblivion grunts. My hands clenched into fists when I realized this wasn't my fault. This was all Team Oblivion's doing.
They were going to pay.
I stood up, with my eyes on the group. I pointed my finger towards them, not caring who'd get hit in the process.
The words came out of my mouth before I could process what was going on. Swanna obeyed my mindless commands, shooting powerful Water Pulses that engulfed both sides, Pokémon and Trainers alike. No one knew what to do as the Pokémon fainted when the attacks hit.
This was for my Pokémon Center. I yelled another attack, but nothing happened. I turned to look at Swanna, who just shook his head.
Every part of me wanted to yell at Swanna for not listening to me. He was my Pokémon. He was supposed to be there for me, helping me save people!
Save people... That was what we were here to do. I glanced back at the group I had just attacked, seeing everyone running for cover. What had I just done? Being a superhero was helping others, not attacking those who weren't on my side.
As the group ran, I saw Lethe look back at me, shaking his head as he tried helping other Trainers out of the building. I was no better than him. Here, he worked for the other side just to "help" me, but after what I had done, I realized I had no room to talk any more.
Was there even a good part inside me anymore?
"Sylvia," I heard Rena call.
I turned around, seeing the blue-haired girl running towards me. I looked down, realizing what I had just done. I lashed out on everyone. Everyone was in grave danger, and with my wrong decision, I had made everything worse.
Wallowing in self pity wasn't going to solve anything. Right now, I needed to help out once again.
Arms wrapped around me, pulling me into a hug. I stiffened at the touch, seeing Rena hugging me. Rena rarely gave out hugs, making me realize this was probably the first time this had ever happened.
"Arceus, don't you dare do that again," she whispered, "You're getting everyone worried."
Rena pulled away, and I noticed how worn out she had looked. Even her Golurk and Hydreigon that were behind her looked pretty exhausted. She smiled, lifting up a familiar white suit, one that had no cape on it this time. When I took it, I realized how different the material felt.
"Don't take this the wrong way, but we could really use Swanna Girl and not Nurse Sylvia right now," Rena said, before giving me a wink, "so suit up."
"You're the best," I forced a smile before turning back and running into the nearest vacant building to change.
(-o-)
Once in the Swanna Suit, Rena and I ran towards where Rudi once was. Hilda and Hilbert must've ran there right away, leaving Rena to go and get my help. Once again, it would've been a lot more helpful if I had just listened to my friends in the first place.
My thoughts got the better of me.
There was no needed to dwell over the past. I realized that now. If I thought for a second as to what had happened, there would be more people in trouble than before. I needed to become that superhero I once was, the superhero that didn't care what she did as she just knew what was right.
Why it was so hard was beyond me.
While we ran, Rena went over the newest features of the suit she made for me. It looked exactly like my old one, except she placed my Key Stone in the middle of the "S" on the suit.
We were about to turn down a street when I noticed an Emboar frozen in place. Rena and I froze in our tracks as I noticed that wasn't just any Emboar. He was Hilbert's Emboar.
The last time I saw this Pokémon, he was battling the legendary, Yveltal.
Rena and I looked at each other, knowing what had happened. There was no telling what had happened to that Emboar as he looked like stone. I was too afraid to touch him to verify, but I didn't need to as something screeched behind us.
Once again, we turned around, seeing the powerful red and black Pokémon flying behind us. Yveltal lifted its head, giving another one of its signature screeches. I held my breath.
"Rena, we need to go," I whispered.
She nodded in agreement, but it seemed to be too late as the legendary Pokémon lowered its head and shot an attack at Rena. I didn't think as I shoved Rena out of the way, mistakenly throwing myself into the danger.
Luckily, Swanna was quick as he flew in front of me and used Protect. For a moment, I felt as if I was going to die as it wouldn't be enough. The attack that Yveltal threw our way was powerful. There was just one problem.
Another attack came and knocked the legendary to the side a bit. I turned to see Rena with her Golurk, Hydreigon, and Lilligant out by her side. If I had to guess, they all had made their attack, which took the legendary off guard.
I smiled, before I grabbed all my other Poké Balls off my belt, noticing Rena had given me Musharna as well. This meant that Joy didn't have a Pokémon to help her out, but at the same time, she should be safe wherever she was at.
If I had to guess, Landon and Wendy were probably with her, keeping the young girl safe inside their underground home.
Hopefully they'd all be safe.
All three of my Pokémon emerged from their Poké Balls, readying themselves for the fight. Well, almost all of them as Musharna turned around and floated into my chest to snuggle beside me. I didn't want to, but I lightly shoved the Pokémon away from me.
But there's a time and place for everything; now wasn't the time.
"Swanna, Ice Beam. Mienfoo, Swift. Audino, Helping Hand. Musharna, Psybeam!" I quickly yelled.
My Pokémon quickly turned to send their attacks, with Audino using Helping Hand to help Mienfoo strengthen her Swift. The three attacks swirled around each other, creating a stronger one. Yveltal did nothing to dodge it. Instead, the legendary embraced the attack.
I watched as the Pokémon flew there, not showing any signs of it being terribly injured. The good news was that these attacks did prove to have some sort of an effect on it, but I couldn't take all the credit for it. I took a deep breath as Yveltal opened its mouth for another attack to be thrown at us.
For all I know, a reason that Pokémon was just starting to feel the effects of the countless attacks it's received before.
Only, in a blink of an eye, the attack had somehow gotten dangerously close to my Pokémon and me.
"Do it now, Whimsicott and Escavalier!" a voice screamed from behind.
I dodged the attack on my own, quickly falling on top of my Pokémon to shove them out of the way as well. When I looked up, I saw an odd looking Pokémon I could never figure out on how to describe, but luckily, I knew it was the Escavalier as Whimsicott was the cotton looking Pokémon beside it.
Wait, Whimsicott. I narrowed my eyes as the two Pokémon released their attacks: a Shadow Ball and Hidden Power. The Whimsicott looked so familiar.
Then, I remembered what Rena had once told me. "I traded Cottonee for Golurk because she found a group of Cottonee she wanted to live with."
It all made sense.
I turned around to see a man wearing the hood of his sweatshirt over his head so no one could see any of his features. He wasn't in all black though. Instead, he wore a red sweatshirt with silver metallic designs on it and a pair of jeans as well.
As if sensing that I was staring at him, the man looked at me, and jerked his thumb behind his back.
"Go, I got this," a low and raspy voice assured.
Rena helped me up, but when I looked up at her, I realized she was looking at the new-comer in confusion. I mean, she should've known who this guy was right? After all, he had her Whimsicott.
"John?" she whispered.
Just then I saw something tumbling from the sky. My eyes widened as there was no way we could move in time. I quickly returned my Pokémon into their Poké Balls, not wanting them to get hurt.
As the object grew closer, I realized it was a huge part of a building. I turned my head just in time to see the legendary Pokémon flying away, as if it just wanted us to die before it could leave.
The impact was the worst. I wasn't sure about Rena, but I quickly curled up into a ball and braced myself for the attack. I couldn't run, but everything seemed to be going into slow motion as I noticed every detail of what was going on.
At the last minute, I noticed the odd-looking sharp red and gray knight looking Pokémon hovering above me and using its arms (er, spears) to break whatever debris was falling down. I felt the little pieces of rock hitting my head, but it wasn't as bad as what it could've been. Because of this, I grabbed Rena by the arm and pulled her out of the way. Her Golurk and Hydreigon flew above us to try and limit the debris falling down on us.
We were about to pass the man who had saved us when Rena slipped away from me. I turned around to see the inventor running over to the man and ripping off his hood. The man had curly dark hair and dark colored eyes that widened at the sight of Rena being right there.
Wait, did they know each other?
"John, it really is you," Rena whispered.
Suddenly, the man's eyes darkened more. "So now you care about me? Really? What about Isaac? Shouldn't he be helping you? You should go before you get hurt. It's too dangerous for you to be here."
Isaac Nox. The man knocked Rena out with a wrench. Seeing how rude he was to Rena made me realize that he didn't care about anyone else's well being but his own. Not to mention, he ratted us out to Team Oblivion long ago, but, I wasn't going to let Rena know that. Not now at least.
I was about to run towards them, to grab ahold of Rena when something snapped. My head looked up in time to see one of the buildings in front of us tumbling down in our direction.
Rena didn't react at first as she looked up at the sky in horror. I tried pulling her away, but she just froze there. Never have I seen Rena freeze this badly before.
"Rena Rhea, you need to get out of there now!" I heard the man scream before he started pushing us out of the way.
The three of us ran, with the man shoving Rena as hard as he could as she was almost as stiff as a rock. When I looked back, I noticed the building starting to hit the ground, getting terribly close to us. I snapped my head forward and sprinted as fast as I could, yanking Rena out of the way.
As we turned back, I realized the building had crashed into the other one. The alley way that we were just in was filled with debris, making it look like a tornado had hit through rather than something else happening.
That man that had urged Rena to move was nowhere to be found.
Something odd came out of Rena's mouth, a sound that wasn't very describable. Her eyes locked onto the debris, as her hands covered her mouth. It was then I realized we weren't the only two that were in there.
That John and his two Pokémon didn't seemed to have made it out.
"Come one, we need to go," I urged.
"John," Rena whispered, "I—I—I never got to tell him."
"Rena," I grabbed her arm, but the blue haired girl kept staring at the area we were just in, "We need to go. Rudi and the others need our help."
The blue-haired girl's expression changed as her face hardened.
"They'll have hell to pay for for killing him. And Nox is getting the first blow," Rena declared.
My eyes widened before I looked back at the debris. With my knowledge, there was still hope that he could be alive, but I didn't want to give Rena false hope as well. After all, I knew what that meant.
False hope was the worst thing. Right now, Rena was angry, which I'd normally try and calm her down to the best of my abilities; however, Rena was right.
Team Oblivion needed to pay for what they've done.
With that in mind, the two of us took off running.
