Chapter 10: A Mega-Filled Battle
Papers were scattered all over the desk as Officer Jenny tried sorting through them. Something about this old case of hers wasn't adding up. For over three years, Swanna Girl and Braviary Man had been completely quiet. Then, out of nowhere, they returned to help out Nurse Joy.
Then again... Jenny stood up and walked over to her giant tac-board with faces and strings all over it. This was a project that she'd been working on since Hilda's disappearance. The Champion had a blue string on her picture that ran to Unova's other ex-Champion, Hilbert. It didn't surprise the police officer that the two of them had disappeared less than a year after taking their posts as Champions.
What got Jenny was that they seemed to be working with Team Plasma's ex-leader, Natural Harmonia Gropius. Every member of Team Plasma had been placed behind bars, except him. It didn't make sense. How was it that every time the police got so close to arresting the leader, he disappeared?
More importantly, what did the heroes of Unova have to do with him?
Jenny's eyes trailed to a different colored string. It was black. No matter what happened in this region, it seemed as if these people dressed in black would always be there. There were too many of them, as if they were an evil organization like Team Plasma or Team Miasma. The only difference was that they didn't have a symbol on their clothing.
It was as if they were ninjas ready to strike, but at what? What could be so important that they would need to stay hidden? My eyes trailed on every picture of these ninjas we had. The first of a woman, who seemed a bit older than the others, so my guess was that she was in her mid thirties, while the others were in their early thirties, late twenties. She had dark hair pulled back in braided pigtails and unforgettable purple eyes. Then, there was another, younger man with oddly-colored silver hair and onyx eyes. As for the third member, she had short red hair cut right below the jawline and brown eyes that were glaring into the picture, as if she knew we had caught her.
The problem with these three leaders was that all of them were nameless. The police couldn't get names on any of them. It was as if they wanted to be erased, but why?
All Jenny knew was that she and the other officers had to keep these attacks on the down low. If someone were to find out that they weren't keeping the citizens of Unova safe, then they'd all be doomed. The police force, the international police, even the gym leaders... They were doing everything they could to keep this region safe.
But how could they when they couldn't find out what this organization was?
Jenny slapped her hand on the tac-board, which accidentally landed on the two newest members that had been added to the people in this mess.
Nurse Joy from Nacrene City and a young Joy from the Sinnoh region. It was Jenny's job to keep them safe, especially Nurse Joy, but that was more personal information that no one needed to know about except Nurse Joy herself. Regardless, what was it that these people wanted with them?
Jenny's eyes dropped to see two other faces with different colored string. One was of a twenty year-old woman with silver eyes while the other was of a twenty-one year-old man with navy blue ones. I sighed, seeing a single blue string connecting the two. Only the girl had strings going in nearly every direction.
"What has Swanna Girl gotten herself into this time," Jenny muttered. But then a hand cupped over her face, and everything went black.
(-o-)
My eyes widened as Rena fell to the floor. Without thinking, I ran to her side, kneeling down and placed my two fingers on her neck.
I exhaled when I felt a pulse.
"Take her!" Nox claimed. "She's a better inventor than I am!"
I looked up at the green-eyed inventor and glared. "How could you do that!"
"I value my life here," Nox claimed.
"Sorry about your luck, but we don't want a simple inventor," My head snapped over from Nox to the dark haired woman, who stared at us, smiling. "We want Isaac Gideon Nox."
All the woman had to do was point her finger at us for chaos to break loose.
"Oh Shinx," Nox squeaked.
I rolled my eyes as I quickly shoved Rena under the work table. We had to make sure she stayed safe. While Team Oblivion was after Nox, I couldn't let anything happen to Rena. Once rolled under, I quickly grabbed her three Poké Balls and released Liligant just so someone would be there to protect their Trainer.
Before I could do anything else, someone grabbed my leg and pulled me from under the table. I tried wiggling myself out of the grasp, kicking both my legs, but nothing seemed to work. Whoever had my leg was stronger.
That was when I released Hydreigon from his Poké Ball.
If things were chaotic right now, it was nothing compared to what it was like the second the Dragon-type Pokémon escaped. I heard people screaming as the Hydreigon broke loose, sending attacks at Trainers and Pokémon alike. The person who had grabbed my leg let go, allowing Audino to rush by my side and help me up.
It was now or never. I pulled out my pen and pressed my thumb on the Key Stone on top of it.
"Time to do this, Audino," I said as the light escaped the Key Stone, hooking up to Audino's Audinite. "Let's Mega Evolve!"
The light was nearly blinding as people shielded their eyes, not expecting what was coming next. I guess that's to be expected. Mega Evolution was a Kalos native thing, not a Unovan one. Not many people knew about it, despite the discovery of the stone being fairly old now, but it was something that still surprised people.
Guess no one expected an Audino to Mega Evolve.
"Now," I said, knowing the full effects what this Mega Evolution could do, "help the others!"
"Audino!" my Audino agreed as he ran over towards Hilda's Pokémon to help them out.
Meanwhile, I turned around, seeing Nox with a Klinklang standing protectively in front of him as he hid in the corner. The gear Pokémon did everything it could to defend its Trainer. I sighed, realizing that one Pokémon against ten Team Oblivion members and their full team of Pokémon wasn't going to be fair.
It didn't matter who knew my secret. It was my duty to help people. My hand grabbed for Swanna's Poké Ball, but the minute my fingers scraped it, I felt a hand yank it away before twirling me around and shoving me against a wall.
The grunt who had me was only a few inches taller than me, and unlike the other grunts, he had shaggy brown hair that poked from underneath the black beanie. I was about to yank off his glasses with my free hand, but the grunt was quicker, slapping my other wrist to the wall.
"I told you to stay out of this," growled Lethe.
Instead of letting myself being pinned up, I stomped my foot onto Lethe's foot.
Lesson one from Hilbert's latest teachings: use my short stature to my advantage and aim low.
Lethe let go of my hands, which lead me to lesson number two of Hilbert's lessons. Despite not wanting to, I knee the young man right where his two legs came together. The Team Oblivion member hunched over with wide eyes, not expecting me to do that.
With him distracted I pulled a random Poké Ball from my belt and threw it out. As soon as I did, I immediately wished I would've looked.
While taking Rena's Pokémon, I didn't count on using her Golurk. That was the Pokémon that I just so happened to throw out.
In return, Lethe grabbed one of his Poké Balls and threw it out. I recognized the Pokémon immediately, despite the fact that it wasn't native to Unova. During my year at nursing school, I had to memorize every single kind of Pokémon there were out there. This one, I remembered, reminded me of an oversized Purrloin, if a purrloin walked on four legs and had more fur than a Herdier.
"A Stunky versus a Golurk," Lethe declared.
Ground-types like Golurk gave me the advantage, well, it would if I knew any of Golurk's move. I was toast.
"Stunky, use Bite!" Lethe yelled.
"Dodge it!" I warned Golurk.
Gosh, what moves did Golurk know? He was part Ground-type, so I could use Earthquake. Not exactly a smart move though, seeing that there were people fighting all over the place. I looked over towards Nox, seeing his Klingklang still fighting off everything while the man held a wrench in his hand in case things would get physical.
My head turned to see Liligant fighting off two Zorua's away from her Trainer. Rena was still out cold, and only the two Dark-type Pokémon seemed to have cared.
From a distance, I heard Hilda screaming on the top of her lungs. She had released all of her Pokémon to fight on their own at this point. Zekrom flew in the air, sending attacks on everyone while her Serperior wrapped three Pokémon in her tail and her Gothitelle used Psychic to push anything away from its friend. Audino stood back to back with her Fraxure, as they were fighting Pokémon, and Audino would then heal his new friend when needed.
I didn't see Hilda's other two Pokémon, which meant they must've already fainted.
Golurk flew back towards me, causing me to run out of the way quickly.
"You need to pay attention if you want to win this," Lethe taunted. "Stunky, use Acid Spray!"
"Golurk!" I screamed.
It was too late. The corrosive liquid drenched the ghostly automaton, and a low, robotic whine escaped him. He then collapsed onto his front with a colossal thud, fainted. I felt numb when I realized I'd done nothing to help defeat Lethe.
I returned Golurk to its Poké Ball and quickly switched it out with Musharna's. After some battling with the Pokémon, I knew Musharna would probably be my best bet right now as Swanna could reveal my secret to the whole world.
If people could figure it out.
Before leaping in front of me, Mushara quickly snuggled at my leg. It was only for a moment, but it was all it took for a small smile to land on Lethe's face.
"Cuddly little thing, isn't it?" Lethe joked.
I frowned before I sent Musharna's first attack. "Use Zen Headbutt!"
"Stunky use—" Lethe started before a Bisharp knocked Musharna out of the way. The two of us turned to see the woman with the braided pigtails standing there, with one hand on her hip.
"You know what they say, Lethe, it's best not to play with our food," the woman warned. "Alright, Bisharp, finish them off."
Musharna stood up, and gave some sort of battle cry before taking her own orders to start fighting Bisharp. I saw Lethe and the woman staring at each other, as if something bad was going to happen soon.
"Now, I must ask you, whose side are you on, Lethe?" the pigtailed woman asked.
Lethe turned to look at me, sending a chill down my spine. Before, he showed a playful emotion like he was enjoying this fight. Now, it looked like he was out for blood. I froze.
Oh Deerling, this wasn't going to be good.
"Shade, you know my alliance," Lethe said.
My eyes widened as I looked over at the woman. She was Shade Krait? Out of everyone I thought of, she would be the last person I thought would be her. Then again, I thought Shade was a man, not a woman.
Before I could say anything, I was tackled to the ground. I looked up to see Lethe on top of me, holding his fist up in the air.
"I warned you to stay out of this," he whispered. "If anything happens, I want you to know it's not on me."
He was about to slam his fist down, but I was quicker. I jerked my head out of the way and kneed my leg upwards, hitting Lethe in a place I didn't think he was expecting, despite doing it earlier.
With him distracted like that, I used everything I had in me to push him off of me. I turned around to see Shade Krait standing there with a creepy smile.
It was the same smile I saw the Krait twins have.
I froze.
"Here I thought they were kidding when they said the nurse was Swanna Girl," Shade cooed. "Looks like coming here wouldn't be a waste if we can't get the hands on the inventor himself."
They knew.
Of course they knew! How dumb am I? I mean, Lethe said so himself! Team Oblivion wanted me to stay out of it. That was probably why they attacked the Pokémon Centers first.
Just why were they after me?
Why was I such a big threat to anyone!
Shade was about ready to kick me, but I was faster, leaping out of the way and throwing Swanna's Poké Ball out into play. If they knew who I was, then there was no point on hiding it anymore.
Swanna flew out in front of me, as if protecting me if he could. While Shade grabbed a Poké Ball from her belt, I looked back to see Lethe fighting with Rena.
Rena!
The girl smiled at me as she slammed her fist right into Lethe's chest. Her pencil skirt had a rip on the side while her heels had been slipped off to allow better movement. I smiled, knowing she was alright for right now, but the real question was for how long?
I snapped my head, seeing Shade with a new Pokémon out in front of her. It wasn't pink like it should've been, being replaced with a blue coloring instead, but it still looked somewhat like a gypsy. Again, had I not memorized every Pokémon, I wouldn't have known that this was a Medicham.
On its forehead, I recognized special beading that wrapped around it, with a Mega Stone in the middle.
Shade smirked. "Looks like you're not the only one with a special Pokémon," she taunted as she grabbed her necklace I didn't even realized she was wearing until now. "Let's show them what true power looks like, Medicham, and Mega-Evolve!"
Light escaped the Key Stone and wrapped around Medicham until it broke off, revealing a blue and golden Medicham. Unlike some Mega Evolutions I'd seen, Medicham looked pretty similar, with four golden ribbons around him and beads on the waist line, giving the Pokémon even more of a gypsy-like look.
"Now, let's focus," Shade instructed, "and use High Jump Kick!"
"Swanna, dodge it with Double Team!" I yelled.
Medicham leapt into the air before soaring back down towards Swanna, leg readied to deal a devastating blow. Swanna was on the verge of making hundreds of copies, but as he made his third one, his opponent kicked the real one right away. My eyes widened as I saw it.
"Now, use Force Palm," Shade instructed.
We couldn't dodge this. Double Team was proven useless. This meant only one thing, despite how much I wanted to make a head on attack like this.
"Swanna counter with Aerial Ace!" I screamed.
Swanna raced towards Medicham, wings spread wide. The two Pokémon collided head-on before being violently knocked backwards, both Pokémon receiving damage. I knew it would be hard knowing that the attack would mean both Pokémon would receive damage, but I couldn't dodge with Double Team.
How was it that I couldn't dodge with that?
"Use Ice Beam," I hastily called out.
Shade smirked. "Block it with Fire Punch!"
My eyes widened at how easily Medicham brought up his fist to counter the Ice Beam, melting it into a puddle in the process. Maybe I needed to start working on my battling a bit more.
"Now, Medicham, use your Feint Attack!" Shade called out.
There was no way to dodge this move, not when I couldn't use Double Team. Unless...
"Swanna, use Protect!" I remembered the one move that could save him now.
Swanna's protective barrier rolled around him, making me wonder how I had forgotten about this move in the first place. We still had a chance. We just had to make it through somehow.
The Medicham rammed right into the barrier, flying back as he wasn't expecting it to happen so quickly. Seeing the Pokémon stumble back a bit, I realized now was my chance.
"Use Water Gun!" I screamed.
A violent jet of water erupted from Swanna's beak, hitting Medicham head on. I smiled. If I was going to win this fight, I had to keep attacking or else this Pokémon would defeat my own.
"Now use Aerial Ace!" I yelled.
Medicham struggled to get up as Swanna took into the air; however, I noticed a smile creeping onto Shade's face. She didn't have to say a word for her Pokémon to do the same. Holy Miltank, they had a plan, didn't they?
I couldn't call Swanna out of his attack either. It would be too late and more dangerous than letting him go through with it. All I could do was watch as the blue Pokémon struggled to get up.
The minute Swanna was about to make contact, the Mega Pokémon used his High-Jump Kick attack, throwing Swanna right into the ceiling. My eyes widened as Swanna plummeted to the ground. I didn't think as I ran right to where Swanna was going to land, catching him.
As I caught Swanna, I collapsed to ground, feeling the impact crushing me down to the ground.
Shade chuckled. I looked up to see her and her Pokémon walking over towards me. The Mega-Evolution had vanished, signaling the battle was over. I grabbed Swanna's Poké Ball and quickly returned him inside.
"You know, when my boss said you'd be our biggest threat, I thought to myself, how is that possible? You've taken so much time off that there's absolutely no way you can win," Shade gloated. "Seeing your nightmares, I just have to laugh. You're nothing without your Pokémon."
The dark-haired woman bent down and tapped me on the forehead, just as I thought I had heard Rudi screaming at the top of his lungs. I didn't remember him arriving, but I didn't have a chance to look around as the darkness had taken over, with the nightmares soon to follow.
Author's Note:
Seems like Sylvia still doesn't have luck with the whole blacking out thing, but at least we get to see her Mega-Audino in action, somewhat (though, I'm just now realizing how cute an cuddly that Audino looks, especially in all the pictures I've found). I don't think there's any way of taking that Pokémon seriously in battle) Any-who, my question for you all is this: What is your favorite Mega-evolution Pokemon?
Hard question, I know. I'm torn between two of them: Blaziken and Lucario. Both of which are probably over-liked, but come on, Lucario looks amazing, and Blaziken, well, that Pokemon will always be in my top three favorite Pokemon. But I also like Mega-Gardivor, especially if it's shiny (can't deny how awesome the shiny color scheme is). What are your thoughts?
Take care everyone!
