Prologue
*A few months earlier*
"Breaking news as we've gotten word of yet another attack from the notorious Team Miasma," a young newscaster announced as he interrupted every channel on the television. "We're coming from you live as we catch all the information of what's going on in Opelucid City."
Everyone in the Unova Region seemed to have stopped whatever they were doing and turn their heads towards the television. Some people watched, knowing someone who lived near that city or had a rival that was planning on going to the Gym there. Hearing this news wasn't exactly comforting, so they watched, hoping that the Unovan Superhero would show up and save the day. Others watched in hopes to catch a glimpse as to what was going on, and hoped to see the famous Braviary Man make an appearance. He always seemed to do so whenever they were in need of a hero, but being that there was breaking news scattering everywhere, people started to worry.
In the small city of Nacerene, a trio of Trainers watched on the television, hoping everything there would be alright. One of those Trainers watched anxiously, tapping his fingers on the counter. He had forgotten why he had gotten there the second it happened. His focus was strictly on the television screen, hoping that somehow everything would be alright.
"Sir?" a voice tried snapping him out of it.
The boy turned to see the nurse working at the front counter. He was a bit confused at first, forgetting the formalities given earlier. All he knew were three things. The first was that this girl was too young to be a Pokémon Nurse. The second was that she didn't wear the stereotypical outfit of an apron and dress that all Nurse Joys did. Instead, she wore a pink shirt and white jeans, with her black hair pulled back and glasses on her face. Because she looked different, he knew this girl wasn't Nurse Joy.
As to why she was talking to him confused the boy. After all, Opelucid City was under an attack. He wanted to watch that and not talk to some assistant working the front desk.
He was about to be rude to her and tell her to be quiet when he noticed his Poké Ball lying on the tray. Somehow, ever since the broadcast of Braviary Man in Opelucid City came on, the boy had forgotten why he came into the Pokémon Center in the first place. More so, the boy had forgotten that he was even inside a Pokémon Center.
"Thanks," he muttered as he took the Poké Ball from the girl and placed it on his belt.
Just then, the entire room bursted into cheers, or at least, the other two Trainers that were there inside the Pokémon Center started to cheer on the top of their lungs. The boy looked up, catching a blurry image of young man in a skintight, red and blue suit. His heart started to race a bit as he recognized the guy from any other time he was on television. It was the famous Braviary Man, there to stop Team Miasma from causing anymore harm from Opelucid City.
Once again, the boy became engulfed in the television, watching the hour long broadcast without moving a single muscle. The Trainer was amazed by what Braviary Man would do to keep the region safe.
He watched as the camera on the screen changed angles, and as it did, it caught the perfect angle of the superhero. The young Trainer couldn't believe it. For the first time in history, Braviary Man was actually looking into the camera, showing off his blond hair and a feathered mask.
"You all need to get out of here," Braviary Man looked past the camera as he screamed. "This city isn't safe for everyone. Run for cover, now!"
"Braviary Man, can we ask you a few questions?" someone asked.
"What exactly happened here today?" another inquired.
"Could you tell us the designer of your suit?" a third voice had to chime in.
Unfortunately, none of their questions were answered as Braviary Man turned around. Instead, a girl with long blonde hair with two serpent looking Pokémon appeared behind the superhero. Attacks flew from their mouths and headed in the direction of the camera.
The boy, who was watching it on the screen, froze. He feared that this was going to be the end of Braviary Man. It didn't help that the cameras turned to show a whole crowd of people running out of the way.
"Causing more trouble," a voice mumbled.
For the first time, the boy willingly tore his eyes off the screen, finding the assistant from before, rolling her eyes at the screen before taking a seat behind the counter and picked up some book that laid beside it. The boy grew angry.
"Trouble?" He asked. "Who peed in your glass of Miltank Milk this morning? I mean, don't you realize he's doing his best?"
The girl looked up from her book and at the boy. "Don't you find it a bit weird that he only showed up when they did? How do you not know that it's all an act for the boy to gain fame or something?"
"You can't honestly believe that," the Trainer said.
"You're right, I don't," the girl said as she closed her book and leaned over her legs. "I do, however, believe he's making a grave mistake in picking a fight with them."
"How else is there supposed to be an end to Team Miasma then?" the boy asked. "How would you do anything different? If Team Miasma showed up right now and started attacking the Pokémon Center, what would you do?"
"I'd follow protocol and get you, Trainers, out of here," the girl reasoned. "Besides, that would never happen."
The boy rolled his eyes. "Like you would ever be brave enough to do that. You don't even have a Pokémon yet, do you?"
"That's enough you two!" a new voice shouted.
Everyone in the Pokémon Center froze and turned their heads to see the number one person one would expect to find in a Pokémon Center: Nurse Joy. She had light pink hair tied in loops, wore a pink dress with puffy short sleeves and a high neckline, and a white apron on top. Despite the name, Joy didn't look too joyful. Instead, she looked quite angry.
She turned to look at her assistant, who scurried up on her two feet. The boy watched as she mumbled a few words, probably an apology of some sort, but he wasn't sure. Instead of saying a word, he just watched as the girl scurried back with the nurse close behind.
"Sorry for the delay," a different voice on the television announced, causing the boy to snap his attention back to the screen. There was no sign of Opelucid City on there. Instead, the screen was replaced with a newsroom, where a man and a woman sat, looking directly at them.
The boy frowned. He knew what Braviary Man was doing was his best. He thought everyone knew that. Apparently some people didn't think that as he remembered that girl criticize what the superhero was doing.
(-o-)
After the attack on Opelucid City was finished, a blue haired girl paced back and forth in her home. She worried what would happen. There wasn't much word on what happened, making her realize how dangerous these missions were for Braviary Man. She just hoped he would come back in one piece.
It felt like hours, but eventually, she heard something opening up above her. The girl stopped her pacing and looked up. She had lived in an underground hideout for about four years now all because her brother decided he wanted to become a superhero. With it, the entire family had to take precaution.
That didn't matter to the girl, but she worried about her brother's well-being. He was all she had left. True, the girl will admit she was lucky that both her parents were still around. Not everyone was as lucky, but she didn't want her brother to get himself in anymore danger.
She watched as the hatch above her opened up. Light poured inside, nearly blinding her, but it was quickly replaced with a bird-like shadow with a Trainer sitting on top of it. She watched as the two descended down, landing right in front of her.
The boy dismounted his feathered Pokémon and quickly returned him inside his Poké Ball before his sister could catch a glimpse of it. Her brother never returned his Braviary back into his Poké Ball like that. They were always laughing, or at least, happy enough that another successful mission was completed.
"Rena, I don't want to talk about it," the boy said before she could even get one word out.
Her brother pushed her out of the way as he walked down a hallway. Rena watched for a moment before she quickly ran beside him. It was hard, being that she wasn't in a stretchy costume like her brother. Instead, she wore heels, a pencil skirt, and a blazer, all of which constricted movement for a bit. The girl never really minded it. To her, this kind of clothing was comfortable.
For once, she wished she could learn to walk a bit faster in heels.
"What happened?" Rena asked. "Is your girlfriend al—"
She stopped when her brother stopped and turned to look at her. Rena had never seen her brother angry before. True, she and him fought a lot, but never has her younger brother given her a look that made her regret even saying a single word.
"She's gone. I don't want to talk about it."
He didn't say another word as he marched away. Rena stood there for a moment, confused. Gone? That didn't make sense. After all, it's been almost a year since her brother dated that girl.
That was when an awful idea came into Rena's head. She didn't know the name of her brother's girlfriend. In fact, she hardly knew anything about this girl. All her brother would talk about was how they were going out for a bit and that he'd take her home.
There was never any sign of fighting for the two. Not that her brother would ever get in fights with anyone other than herself, but nothing beyond that. Realizing that, she realized this was no normal break-up. Rena recalled the reports they'd received about the attack, and how Braviary Man did everything to get everyone out of there.
Not everyone seemed to have made it out safely. Rena worried what that could've meant for her brother, and started to realize that the girl, whomever she may be, might not have made it out alive.
Rena didn't feel like she had a choice. She ran through the hallways and found where her brother's room was at. On the door had his name, Rudi, in bright red lettering.
She started to bang on the door. "Rudi? Rudi, open up. I need to talk to you."
"Go away Rena," her brother's voice growled from the other side.
The girl stopped. He was never like that. Her brother was a lot of things. Kind, gentle, yet strong when he needed to be, but never was he annoyed like that. Rena thought for a moment, trying to think of a way to get through to him.
"What's going on?"
Rena turned to see her parents standing there. She didn't seem to look anything like them since she had blue hair. Her parents and brother all had blonde hair. The only thing Rena had in common with them were their blue eyes.
Like her own blue eyes, her parent's eyes were very readable. She could tell they were worried about her brother just as much as she was. While she didn't want to worry them even more, Rena knew what she had to do and quickly explained to them everything that had happened. She worried that her brother was going through. If her hunch was right, that his girlfriend didn't make it out, then she feared that Rudi wouldn't be strong enough to stop Team Miasma.
Girls were a distraction in Rena's eyes. She always thought that. The amount of time Rena had spent with girls during her youth, she found it to be a waste of time even trying. She thought maybe that's what her brother was going through. The loss of a girl in his life was too much for him to handle.
Her parents tried pulling Rena away, but she refused. For hours, Rena sat outside her brother's door, trying to think of ways to get him the cheer up. It wasn't Rena's specialty. Getting heated up and snapping at people was her specialty. Her mouth often got her in trouble as she was the one who instigates most of the fights between her and her brother. Rena knew that, and tried working on it, but nothing ever seemed to work.
In Rena's mind, that's what her brother needed to stay away from. He didn't need any girl in his life, not if she'd become a liability.
Hours passed by, but Rena didn't seem to notice until her brother finally walked out of his room. The girl quickly stood up and wrapped her brother in a hug. Rudi flinched under her touch, but smirked.
"Hey, don't worry about me," he told her. "After all, I'm Braviary Man. It's going to take a lot more than some smog and stuff to take me out."
Rena still didn't let go, noticing a small shift in her brother's attitude. She had a bad feeling about what caused it, but didn't question it. It was during that moment Rena realized how dangerous it was for her brother being Braviary Man. She just hoped Rudi would be more careful, especially with his odd behavior.
Author's Note:
Hello! Fun fact to those who are just reading: this prologue is the newest addition to this story. It still needs to be edited, so I apologize for any mistakes or awkward sentences. Feel free to point out any mistakes throughout the book as I am human, and I do tend to make a ton of mistakes. I'll try to fix them as soon as I can.
I'm always up for criticism of any kind. It's because of you readers that this book can be improved. This book will mostly be written in first person, following the story of Sylvia Gray. If the POV changes, it will be in third person. I understand POV changes can be frustrating to read, but this was how I originally wrote the trilogy, and I struggle writing a book in 3rd person. From previous feedback, POV changes in third person is less aggravating than changes in first person.
With that being settled, I hope you enjoy Swanna Girl and Braviary Man.
