Chapter 3: Ms. Rhea's Way, or the Highway
I pulled on my nurse cap, working the front desk for Nurse Joy as she checked on Ducklett and the other Pokémon for a moment. For a Monday, things seemed pretty laid back, especially knowing that everyone's hero was here in town yesterday.
Because of the slow day, I pulled out a notebook of anatomy notes I've taken over the different Pokémon. Some were very similar. Flying-types, like Ducklett, Pidgoetto, and Pidove, all had the same structure. With that fact being said, I looked at a picture of the inside of a Pidgeot, looking at the legs.
There just had to be some way to heal this Pokémon faster. I read the notes to the side over a dozen times, and nothing seemed to be working. Whatever Nurse Joy and I had already concluded with for Ducklett's recovery, it was the best solution we had.
Unless...
I flipped through the pages until I saw the words Evolutionary Discoveries. Once there, I carefully turned the page until I found something that was said when a Pokémon evolved, the body structures would too, change as a result in the evolution.
So, hypothetically, if a Pokémon were to break a leg, if they evolved, the leg would strengthen and heal itself. This seemed like a perfect solution, only, I could see the major flaw the moment I saw the solution. It wasn't finding someone to battle. I could always ask Nurse Joy's Audino to help me.
With this solution, if it didn't work, Ducklett's leg would get worse. It was too big a risk. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. That Ducklett didn't look too happy when she laid on that counter, waiting for her leg to heal. No matter what, time would just have to be the next best thing.
"Excuse me, ma'am," a voice asked. "Would you mind healing my Pokémon for me?"
"Sure thing," I said, closing the book and looking up at the woman who handed me three Poké Balls. Her blue hair that was pulled back in a neat bun made it easy for me to recognize her. I smiled. "I'll have it first thing for you, Ms. Rhea."
Ms. Rhea's eyes widened. "Wha—how do you—oh, I remember you now! Again, I apologize for spilling your coffee yesterday."
"It's fine," I assured, as I pressed a blue button on the desk that would call Audino over to take care of these Pokémon. "It's an honest mistake."
As I took a tray to carefully place Ms. Rhea's Pokémon on, I noticed the blue haired woman standing on the other side, not wanting to leave her Pokémon alone with me. It was weird. Usually, Trainers—not matter how formal they are—would wait in the waiting area for their Pokémon.
"You know, I never got your name," Ms. Rhea said.
"Oh! I'm sorry. I usually introduce myself," I apologized. "I'm Nurse Joy's assistant, Sylvia. Audino," I introduced as the big pink Pokémon walked through the back doors. "Will be taking good care of your Pokémon, don't worry."
I handed Audino the tray of Poké Balls, which the Pokémon gladly took before heading to the back to give Ms. Rhea's Pokémon a better checkup than I could. When the Pokémon was gone, I looked back, seeing Ms. Rhea was still standing there. Only, this time, her eyes were glued on the door that Audino went through.
"Don't worry, Audino will take good care of your Pokémon. In the meantime, you're welcome to sit in the waiting area," I offered.
Ms. Rhea shook her head. "Sorry, its just, a friend of mine told me that a Sylvia worked here, I just didn't think you were her. I was also supposed to deliver a message to you, but, I see you're busy, so it can wait."
I looked around, seeing the place extremely empty. For it being summer, I was surprised more Trainers didn't come here. Then again, with Team Miasma around, it didn't surprise me that they weren't as active as they used to be. Once they showed up, gym leaders had trouble running a gym and usually had to take on a second job. For instance, the gym leader here ran a library.
This meant there wasn't many Trainers who asked for their Pokémon to be healed. Trainers were also smarter about taking care of them too. I smiled at Ms. Rhea.
"I'm not terribly busy right now," I told her. "What's going on?"
Ms. Rhea seemed paranoid all of a sudden. Her eyes searched for anyone that could've been around. When no one was around, she looked up to see if there were any security cameras hiding anywhere. There was only one, which Ms. Rhea quickly glued her eyes to as soon as she spotted it.
Oh Deerling, she didn't do something illegal, did she?
"Mind if we go outside," Ms. Rhea offered, looking down at the counter top.
"I don't think I can go," I told her. "I'm helping Nurse Jo—"
"Sylvia," Nurse Joy said on cue, "is everything alright up front?"
I turned around to see Nurse Joy coming from the back. Audino must've been doing the basic checks on Ms. Rhea's Pokémon, so she had a bit of time to come out and talk for a moment.
"Everything is going well," Ms. Rhea answered. "You wouldn't mind if Sylvia takes a fifteen minute break, would you? I accidentally ran into her yesterday and spilt her coffee, and I would like to make up for it, if you don't mind."
Please don't accept the invitation. I looked up at Nurse Joy, giving her pleading eyes not to do it. While Ms. Rhea seemed trustable yesterday, today, I wasn't sure. Something seemed off.
Nurse Joy smiled, making me realize what she was thinking. Ponyta crap.
"Of course, in fact, Sylvia, take the day off," Nurse Joy insisted. "It would be nice to make some friends outside the Pokémon Center."
My eyes widened as she said that, but I didn't have much to do as Ms. Rhea grabbed my arm and pulled me out, yelling that we'd be back before dinner. I glanced back at Nurse Joy who seemed very happy that I had made a new friend.
Okay, what kind of person makes friends with someone who spills their coffee? I get it, she paid for it. We're even now, but that's it. Ms. Rhea was nice, but something didn't seem right.
I didn't even have any time to say anything as she pulled me around town, weaving our way around the streets. While we did this, I made sure I kept an eye on every street sign. If something went wrong, I wanted to make sure I knew the fastest way out.
Normally, I'd know exactly where I was going, but for once, I felt like I was going to a place no one knew about. I've lived in Nacrene City all my life, but I've never ventured east of here. There weren't even many people around to even notice in case Nurse Joy were to worry.
Once outside of Nacrene City, I yanked myself out of Ms. Rhea's grasp and faced her. There was nothing but open fields and a cave not far away. If I screamed loud enough, maybe, just maybe, a traveler would hear me. That would be too simple. Something just didn't seem right.
"What's going on?" I asked. "Why do you need to speak to me in private? I have a job to be working at!"
Ms. Rhea reached her hand into her blazer pocket, pulling out a white Poké Ball, one of which was similar to the one I saw Braviary Man carried his Braviary inside. Every Poké Ball has their own characteristic, which made it special. I squinted my eyes, seeing that there were no scratches on it, as if polished every day.
It was something an arrogant person would do to their Poké Ball.
As if knowing what I was thinking, Ms. Rhea held the Poké Ball up beside her face. "You've seen this Poké Ball before, and I'm sure you have many questions, but I need you to answer me one question. How do you know Rudi is Braviary Man?"
Rudi? Who's Rudi? I didn't know—the boy with the blond hair and navy blue eyes. That must've been Braviary Man's actual name. Seeing how Ms. Rhea was worried, it made me wonder how she knew. Then again, she must've been close to the superhero as she held his Poké Ball.
"His eyes were navy blue," I recalled. "I've worked at the Pokémon Center in Nacrene for fifteen years, and no one has ever come in with that shade of blue eyes. At least, not that I can recall."
"Well, you know too much. You have to promise me you'll keep this a secret. If anyone finds out who he really is—"
"Then there will be no one to save Unova," I groaned. "Come on, there are Trainers out there that can save the day. Don't worry, your secret is safe with me."
Ms. Rhea's eyes widened before something rang. She reached into her skirt pocket and pulled out a small, silver phone. Once she held it up to her ear, she talked before giving the other person a chance.
"Rudi, change of plans. I'm meeting you in Nimbasa, now," She explained before she hung up and released his Braviary from his Poké Ball, and looked at me. "Ever rode on a Pokémon before?"
