Chapter 20: An Elaborate Illusion
A young man looked down at his red and blue suit as he tried to think of all the ways he could've gotten out of his situation. No matter what he came up with, he fell short of how he was going to get out of the chair he was tied to. His hands were tied together behind him, while another cord of rope tied his legs to a leg of the chair, and another one wrapped around his torso. There was no escape for the young superhero, no matter how much he struggled.
His mind raced back to what happened prior to being shoved into a small broom closet and tied to that chair. Hours ago, he remembered fighting alongside his partner, until they were forced to split up. Deep down, the young man knew he shouldn't have fallen for yet another trick. He should've stayed where he was at and help with the fight, rather than listened to her like he did.
He did what he thought was best: he ran down the stairs to stop whatever was going on. Only, in turn, the young man ended up embarrassing himself by tripping over his two feet and falling down the stairs. It made it easier for the members of Team Miasma to capture him that way.
At least they took me and not her, the young man thought. I don't know what I'd do if they would have captured her.
It was only a short amount of time since the young man met his partner in crime, Swanna Girl, but it didn't take long for him to feel protective over her. Even he knew she was strong enough to take care of herself. That wasn't what scared him. It was how easily that girl weaseled her way into his heart. Because of that, he was afraid of losing her for good. He didn't want that to ever happen.
If he could, he would've used his earpiece to warn her and his sister about what was going on. He didn't want either of them to worry about him and just continue on saving the region. There was just one small problem. When he was kidnapped by the members of Team Miasma, they had taken both his Pokémon and his earpiece that his sister invented away from him.
Without being able to warn either of them of what was going on, the young man feared what could've happened next. As much as he worried about Swanna Girl, he knew she was tough. She would be able to tackle anything that came her way. She proved that when she fought at Patrat's Pizza for the first time, protecting her own city without giving it a second thought.
While Swanna Girl was tough, Team Miasma was cunning.
The door in front of him swung open, and a light switch was turned on so that he could see who had stepped in. A young woman with short brown hair and blue eyes walked in. It was a change from how the young man saw her from before, but that was the thing about this particular member of Team Miasma. She looked different every time he'd encountered her.
His sister dubbed this young woman the master of illusions, and with good reason too. She didn't have to try. If she had different colored eyes and hair, she could look the exact same. Other times, this admin of Team Miasma could appear to look like an unrecognizable 99 year-old woman.
She could also appear to be a sixteen year old girl who could steal your heart, only smashing it the day Team Miasma planned an attack on Opelucid City just to slow a hero down.
He knew her by name. In fact, he knew her by many different names. Being tricked by her multiple times damaged the superhero's pride. Rudi promised himself he would never be tricked by Gila ever again.
Gila bent down to look at the superhero at eye level. She smiled, which made the young superhero want to run the other direction. There was just one small problem. He couldn't move when he was bound to a chair.
"Rudi—"
"Don't call me that," Rudi growled.
The admin chuckled as she pressed her hand to his cheek, feeling his soft skin. "Why not? We used to be on friendly terms once. Don't you remember?"
"No," Rudi stumbled on words for a moment. "I-I mean, I re-remember, but none of that was true. You tricked me! Only using me to slow me down. You didn't even tell me your real name there, Lyla."
Gila leaned forward so that their faces were only inches from each other. Sweat started to drip from Rudi's forehead as he realized what could happen at any moment. He wasn't comfortable with it either, but there was nothing he could've done.
"Well then why don't we start over," Gila whispered. "After all, I'm sure you miss those times we were together. We could always return to the way things were. Only this time, I wouldn't have to lie to you about who I am. You can call me Gila, and together, you and I, we can take over Unova. We could—"
"Get away from me," Rudi growled.
The admin flinched for a moment as she didn't expect the young man to retaliate so quickly. She slowly sat back on her heels, studying Rudi for a moment.
While she did, Rudi involuntarily remembered everything that had happened between them. He didn't want anyone to ever know about what had happened, especially Sylvia. It was one thing to have an ex, Rudi realized, but it was another thing when that ex was a complete psychopath.
Rudi only realized it when it was too late. In Opelucid City, she betrayed him into thinking that they were going to go on a date. All so that she could distract him to be another person trapped in the attack with nothing to do. He had dated her for months. He had trusted her, had grown feelings for her, but it was all an act.
From then on, every time he saw her, he was afraid she would tell the whole world what had happened between the two of them, that the brave Braviary man was tricked by an admin of Team Miasma.
Sylvia can never find out about what happened between Gila and me, Rudi thought.
As if reading his thoughts, Gila tilted her head, "Is it because of that Swanna Girl? Have you grown feelings for her, even after everything we've been through? I thought you said that you loved me?"
Rudi shook his head. "That was before you betrayed me, Gila."
He watched as Gila gave a dramatic sigh and leaned in close to him once again. Only this time, she laid her forehead onto his, locking her eyes into his. Rudi froze, trying to lean back as far as he could in the chair, but being in a small room, he couldn't even make the chair tilt back.
Rudi was trapped.
"Why don't you tell me who this Swanna Girl is," Gila whispered. "Tell me who she is, and I promise, I won't throw any harm your way. We can just go back to the way things were before I had to send everything crashing down in Opelucid. It can just be you and me."
"Never," Rudi sneered. "I'd rather rot in the Distortion World than be with you. You may have tricked me once, but there's no way I'll let you do it again."
Gila frowned, but didn't move her face any further from him. "Are you sure about that? If you give me her name, I won't lay another finger on her again. That is, of course, as long as she stays out of our way."
"I'm positive." Rudi assured.
The admin pushed herself away from Rudi. As much as he wished he couldn't have seen it, he could see that she was hurt that she wasn't going to get her own way. Seeing as though she might have given up, Rudi sighed in relief. He would do anything to keep those he loved safe.
Giving Sylvia's name to Gila would mean that she could do her research about this girl. She would find out that Swanna Girl was just a nurse assistant in Nacrene City, with no parents, and a close legal guardian that took care of her. Even Rudi knew Gila wouldn't bat an eye in using both the Pokémon Center in Nacrene City or the Pokémon Nurse that worked there, to torture Sylvia.
Rudi couldn't let that happen. Only, he didn't know Gila had a back up plan until it was too late.
"Fine," Gila said as she pulled something from her back pocket. Rudi squinted his eyes, trying to catch a glimpse of what she had pulled out. When he did, his eyes widened. "Guess if you don't tell me, I'll just have to figure it out myself."
Rudi watched as Gila pressed the button on the earpiece his sister created for him to keep in contact with her. When she pressed it, an ear piercing scream wailed through that even Rudi could hear. He flinched at the voice as he recognized the voice that belonged to his sister. Before Gila could say a word, Rudi prepared himself for the worst.
(-o-)
Rena screamed. Had it not been for Cottonee and Lilligant, she would've tackled me to the ground. Her Hydreigon would've attacked me on site as his eyes cut into my soul. It was eight in the morning, and I just got back from the mission we were sent on. Seeing that I came back alone, it wasn't good.
I didn't want to leave without Rudi. When Team Miasma left, I waited until the first Trainer walked up to the top of Spiral Tower. The Trainer fanboyed that he actually got to meet Swanna Girl and see me in action, but before he could ask anymore, I tried looking for Rudi.
There wasn't any luck.
It wasn't until a Trainer was talking to another one about Braviary Man taking Team Miasma away that I realized what happened. I hopped on Swanna and flew all night trying to find where Team Miasma was at. They just got a head start, and when I finally found them on their trail, they knew.
Team Miasma had a helicopter with their symbol on it. That's how I knew where they were at. Unfortunately, as soon as Swanna and I got close, they sped up.
Before I knew it, I was forced to turn back to Rudi's home, where his sister was waiting in the main room with all her Pokémon, probably getting ready to come after me. The moment I came back without Rudi and explained it to her what happened, she screamed.
"I'm sorry!" I apologized, "I can't do anything right."
"You can't! I can't believe he trusted you! Of all people! You're a worthless little piece of—" Rena stopped struggling, placing her hand over her ear. "Who's this and why do you—"
She stopped speaking as her eyes grew. Both Cottonee and Lilligant let go of their Trainer, listening into their Trainer's earpiece as well as they could. I glanced over at Hydreigon, who looked as confused as I was, but as soon as he noticed me staring at him, he glared.
Ignoring the dragon type, I walked over towards Rena, so I could listen better. However she designed this earpiece, she did a good job at keeping others from listening in. I felt awkward not being able to listen to what was going on.
Rena glanced at me, her face paling as she did. She looked as if she was contemplating against something, but she nodded her head as she listened. I glanced at her two grass type Pokémon, who had given up in trying and just watched her.
Then everything clicked. Rena's earpiece only connected to one other person's: Rudi. He had to be on the other of that earpiece, or should be. My heart started beating faster, hoping Rudi would be okay. Knowing the fact that he was with Team Miasma, I don't think that was a possibility.
"I understand," Rena said calmly, looking over at me, "But I'm afraid I can't do that. Is there something else we can do as a—"
There was another pause. I was surprised how calm she could be on the earpiece. She didn't even seemed shocked. Guess it was Rudi though, hopefully with a plan out of there.
But when Rena denied the person on the other end, I realized it could have been Rudi. My hand wrapped around Swanna's Poké Ball, as I started rubbing the top of it. Something wasn't right. I just had a hunch things weren't going to be getting much worse.
"I understand," Rena said, looking down at her feet for a second then lifting her head to look straight ahead, "Tomorrow, midnight, by the Nimbasa Ferris Wheel. Yes, we'll bring it if you bring Braviary Man."
Rena dropped her hand from her ear, looking down at her Lilligant. Her face paled, as if wondering what she agreed to was actually good or not. I wasn't even sure myself, then again, I didn't even know what was going on.
Before I could ask, Rena explained, "I've made a mistake. They know who your parents are and because of that, they're more dangerous than I thought."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
The blue haired girl looked up at me, her eyes terrified, "Our parents worked together as a team, but when they disbanded, only your mom knew how to always find the legendary, Kyurem. That's what that map was that we found not too long ago."
I nodded my head, trying to figure out what she was getting at.
"According to them, I had a choice. Either we could give them your true name, or the map because they know you're the only person that would have access, and if we didn't—"
"Rudi would be trapped there forever," I realized.
Rena nodded. "With that map, they'll get their hands on the legendary."
"Then why wouldn't you give them my name?" I asked.
"For two reasons. One it would be dangerous, and two, Rudi would have my head if I did it," Rena exhaled. "Just trust me when I say we don't have a choice."
I nodded my head, feeling a bit annoyed that I was being kept in the dark for a bit, but this was being done for Rudi. I just hope he's doing alright.
On the other hand, I hated thinking that Team Miasma was going to get away with their plans. All of Unova was going to suffer...no, the whole would could be destroyed if they got their hands on Kyurem. There had to be another way.
"Look," Rena breathed, "I'm sorry for not giving you a chance earlier. It's just, Rudi's my little brother, and he gets reckless that he thinks he's indestructible. I've see what happens when he gets close to someone who didn't love him the way he does. I shouldn't have been so quick to assume you'd be the same. It's because of that we need to keep you safe. Rudi will stop fighting if something happens to you."
It was then everything started to make sense. If they could get rid of Rudi and me, they would scare all of Unova into leaving. With everyone gone, they could get Kyurem for themselves. That legendary had more power than any other Pokémon I knew of, but mostly because of its ice powers. If there was something else it could do, I'm sure Team Miasma would use that power to.
It would be too dangerous to give them the legendary's whereabouts.
"What if we had another way?" I asked.
Rena gave me a questioning look. "Then I wouldn't have agreed."
"No," I told her, enlarging Swanna's Poké Ball, "I think I have a way of stopping Team Miasma once and for all, without giving them the map and getting Rudi back."
Rudi's sister's eyes widened. "I'm all ears."
