Chapter 2: Meeting the Cocky Superhero
There were three of them, three members of Team Miasma. My heart started to pound as I stepped in front of the helpless Ducklett. If I wanted to be a Pokémon Nurse someday, my job would be to heal Pokémon. This Ducklett was in trouble. If she was going to be healed at all, I'd have to make sure these men wouldn't harm her at all.
They all looked identical, which was usually a sign that these men were on the bottom of the pyramid when it came to rank. Grunts, I remembered a newscaster once calling them. Either way, I was screwed as they smiled creepily.
"Boys, aren't we in for a sweet surprise? There's nothing your beloved superhero can do about it," the grunt in the middle declared as he released a green Grimer.
Now seemed like a perfect time to practice my nurse voice, but not the one that I normally use to make conversation. No, this was one that Nurse Joy said I needed more work on as every Pokémon Nurse needed to know when it was appropriate to scold young Trainers about serious injuries.
Now seemed like the perfect time to try it.
I crossed my arms. "I don't need Braviary Man to save the day. This Pokémon is hurt, and I won't let you guys hurt her, even if you're part of Team Miasma."
My comment came off strong, one that should've stroke fear into these men, but it did just the opposite. They all started bursting out laughing. The grunts standing on either side of the center grunt decided to send out their Pokémon: Koffing. The smell of pollution worsened so much, I pinched my nose.
"Well, how about a Pokémon battle, us three verses you," the center grunt declared. "Then maybe we'll leave you and that Ducklett alone."
"No! She needs medical attention!" I argued, looking back at the whimpering Ducklett. "I can't let you do that."
"Fine, you leave us no choice," one of the side grunts said. "Koffing, use Smoke Screen!"
"You too, Koffing," the other one said.
"And Grimer, use Sludge Bomb to teach this kid a lesson," the grunt in the center said.
Without thinking, I turned to Ducklett and scooped her up into my arms, burying her head into my chest. There was no way I was going to allow this Pokémon to suffer these Pokémon attacks when she couldn't fend for herself.
As the smoke surrounded us, I held her tightly, just in time for the Sludge Bomb to nail me right in the back. I always knew Pokémon attacks were painful, but never to this caliber. My lips pressed together to prevent myself from screaming. That's what these grunts would want. They'd want me to be weak and vulnerable. If I agreed to be that for them, then they'd harass me even more.
"Looks like this one can deal with the pain," the grunt in the middle said with a laugh. "Let's use Gunk Shot, Grimer."
No, not that. Ducklet snuggled closer to me, not wanting to be attacked. I repositioned myself quickly, keeping my back to the attacker's, but making sure Ducklett wasn't exposed at all. If Gunk Shot were to poison the opponent—which would be Ducklett and me in this case—then we could be in a bad position.
"Koffing," both of the grunts on the sides declared, "use Belch."
I squeezed my eyes shut. Belch wasn't a move I was familiar with, but either way, I wasn't going to let this poor defenseless Ducklett suffer from this move.
"Braviary, brave bird, lets go!" a mysterious voice called.
Since my eyes were closed, I didn't get a chance to see what happened, but one thing was for certain. None of the attacks landed on me like they did before. Instead, I heard the Koffing and Grimer groan as something must've stopped them. I turned my head, still not able to see what was going on due to all the gray fog Koffing created. But another figure came out of nowhere, placing his hands on his hips.
Great. Just what I wanted to see. Maybe seeing what Belch and Gunk Shot would've done to me would've been better than being saved by the famous Unovan hero.
"Now, Braviary, use Gust!" Braviary Man instructed.
A powerful wind blew around me, causing my hair to fly out of the tight braid it was in. I rolled my eyes. There were other moves a Braviary could learn to lift the smoke screen like defog, which was a gentle way of getting ride of foggy like moves. This would've been more effective than a gust attack.
When the wind died down, I looked up to see the three grunts running away while returning their Pokémon into their Poké Balls. I loosened my grip on the Ducklett, but I stood up with the wild Pokémon still in my arms.
"Well, it's been a pleasure saving you and your Pokémon," Braviary Man said. "I believe a thank you that is in order."
I didn't even look the superhero in the eyes, as I scratched the Ducklett under the beak. Each and every kind of Pokémon had a special spot that they enjoyed being scratched, petted, or rubbed in a certain way. Every bird-like Pokémon liked to be scratched under the beak.
As I did this, the Ducklett let out some sort of happy and cheerful cry. At least she wasn't hurt. My back was sore from bearing the attacks, but it wasn't anything I couldn't self heal back at the Pokémon center. I knew I was going to be okay.
But, for this superhero to expect a thank you from me, that was insufferable. I couldn't believe it. He just excelled my expectations of him. Not only did he save the day for fame, but this guy expected everyone to be groveling at his feet when he did.
I couldn't believe there was someone more arrogant than a Purlion.
"I believe you owe Ducklett an apology," I countered.
This shocked the superhero. "Excuse me? Did I hear you right? If you'd bared another attack, you'd be heading to the hospital while your Ducklett spent the night in a Pokémon Center. I believe you owe me just a little thank you. It's just two simple words."
"Whatever," I laughed. "You want two simple words, I'll give them to you." I shot back. I was about to say two different words, but he cut me off.
"Whoa there, I just saved your life," the superhero countered as he took a few steps towards me so I was forced to see his navy blue and red suit that clung to his chest. He stood a few feet above me, so I didn't have to see the ridiculous white feathered mask covering his face. "You have to be somewhat grateful. It's not every day people get to meet a Unovan Superhero."
I laughed, refusing to look up at him. "If I wanted to meet you, I would've gone to that pointless show and tell thing you were doing earlier."
Braviary man froze. I could see it in his chest. He wasn't expecting anyone to talk back to him at all. Looks like the cocky and arrogant superhero has never been shot down before because he held in his breath.
When he did this, I decided now was to look up at him. As I did, I froze. His navy blue eyes shown through the white mask that covered most of his hair and face, but that didn't hide these unforgettable navy blue eyes.
I took a step back, and stopped scratching Ducklett under the beak. The little Pokémon looked up at me confused, but I had to get a better look at this superhero. His suit was mainly navy blue, but had accents of red on the long sleeves and wrapped around the chest at abdominal area for some kind of design.
Never did I realize he had navy blue eyes.
"You're the boy from the cafe," I remembered. "You're no superhero. You're just some boy craving the spotlight."
As I shot these words at him, Braviary Man's Braviary landed in front of him, walking toward me with a death look in his eyes. I should've known not to get so hostile so quickly. Braviary were very protective over their Trainers.
With that, a way to sooth them is to compliment them and stroke the top of their head. The first option wasn't even thinkable, but the second one was dangerous. Braviary wouldn't think twice about using peck on me. I took a step back.
"Braviary, don't," the superhero stopped his obedient Pokémon. "Sylvia, you're smart, but there's a lot you don't know."
I shook my head. "I know everything I need to know."
Before anything else was said, I pushed past the superhero to get out of here. I couldn't believe it. Everything I had previously thought about the Unovan superhero was right. He was nothing but a phony.
A hand grabbed my shoulder. I turned around to see a red gloved hand gently touching it, as if I was some fragile creature. My head looked up, seeing a look I've never seen in Braviary Man's eyes before: fear.
For the first time, I could see fear in the superhero's eyes.
"Please," he begged, "don't tell anyone."
I yanked my shoulder out of his grasp. "Who would believe me anyways. Like you said, I'm smart, but who would believe my words over everyone's beloved superhero?"
Without saying anything else, I walked out of the ally way, leaving Braviary Man and his Pokémon alone in the dark alley.
(-o-)
That night, I stayed inside the back room, watching the poor Ducklett laying on the table with a blinding light hanging over her. She was almost healed, but even I could see her bandaged foot as she slept. I should've been quicker. If only I would've wondered around the streets earlier, maybe I could've found the Pokémon before she tried walking on it.
By the looks of things, Ducklett completely broke her leg. It wasn't some small fracture I was hoping for. No, this poor Pokémon wouldn't be able to walk for some time. Until then, she could only lay down unless someone would carry her.
Nurse Joy tried telling me I did the right think in finding the Pokémon instead of letting her out on her own. Still, I couldn't help but to feel like I could've done more. She was helpless and waiting for someone to find her, and I didn't do anything until it was early afternoon.
It made me wonder how many Pokémon were out there wondering around injured, waiting to be rescued.
As that Ducklett laid there, I just sat outside the room, watching through the window. There wasn't anything I could do. There was only so much I could. I just wish I could've done more that could save that Ducklett.
Everything was done. We just had to wait. I just didn't like waiting.
Author's Note:
Hello everyone! We finally got to meet Braviary Man. Seeing that both he has a flying type Pokémon, I want to ask all of you, what is your favorite flying type Pokémon?
Hope you're having a wonderful day! Bye.
