Chapter 18: Unlocking the Past
Saying my goodbyes to Nurse Joy felt a bit off. I mean, this time, I was able to give her a proper goodbye. If she wasn't so busy with the Pokémon Center, she would've asked how my journey was going. Helping her out around the Pokémon Center was something I always did for fun. It cut down all the jobs in half.
Now that she was running it herself, she seemed twice as busy.
We hugged as I told her I was off to Nimbasa City, which wasn't a total lie. Nurse Joy advised Rudi to keep an eye out for me, which only led to our departure earlier than I wanted as I dragged him out of the Pokémon Center before he could answer.
We flew to Rudi's home, which appeared empty. I felt a bit confused, but Rudi didn't seem to mind as he just walked to his room. As he did, I noticed had no articles of himself up anymore, just a sign that said his name. Funny how I didn't realize it before.
My Pokémon and I decided to do the same, so I sat on my bed, looking at the silver key in my fingers.
Swanna and Audino both leaned over my shoulder, trying to catch a glimpse of the key. I held it out, so they both could see it.
"Wonder what it's to?" I wondered.
Just like that, Audino grabbed the key from my hands and started saying something I couldn't understand. When will someone invent a Pokémon mind-reader? It would be better than guess what a Pokémon was saying.
Then I remembered something. Audino use to belong to my mom. If this key belonged to her, then he'd know what it opened.
"What's it to?" I asked.
"Audino no no Audino," the Audino said, pointing to the key, then up to the ceiling.
"A secret room?" I asked.
The Pokémon sweat dropped, looking at Swanna for help. My trusted partner shook her head before flying off my bed and stood beside Audino. I watched as the two Pokémon tried acting the scene out. Audino sat down as he moved his hands. While he did that, Swanna started to move around, as if trying to dance.
"A secret dance room?" I guessed, "a keyboard?"
Both Swanna and Audino fell down, embarrassed of my answers. I couldn't help it. I wasn't good at charades. I sighed, looking out the door to see Rena passing by.
While Rena and I weren't on the best of terms, I felt like I was running out of options. Hopefully she wouldn't hold the Opelucid City incident over my head because right now. I needed help.
"Rena," I said, causing her to backtrack to see me through the door, "can you help me out?"
The blue-haired girl raised an eyebrow. "Is it important?"
Instead of answering, I held up a silver key. "This belonged to my mom, and while Audino belonged to her, I can't tell what he's trying to tell me it's too."
Audino slapped his forehead, as if what he was saying was very quite simple. It's kind of weird how they could understand us so well, but when I try to figure out what they're saying, it's just a complete mystery. Again, it would be so much easier if someone just invented something that could just let us understand what Pokémon are saying.
Rena ran into my room and grabbed the key from my hand. Her eyes widened as she saw the initials JETG on it.
"What is it? Do you know what it's too?" I asked.
"Yes! Why didn't you show this to me sooner!" Rena exclaimed, pointing the key right at my nose.
"Well I didn't know what it was, and I never knew about it," I told her. "All I know that Rudi found it when we were back home, well, back at the Nacrene Pokémon Center."
"I found what?" Rudi's voice asked.
His sister twirled around while I stood up from my bed, getting a better look at the blond haired boy. We had gotten back pretty late, which made me wonder where his parents were at. Either way, Rudi had already dressed in his pjs, which consisted of a white shirt and pajama pants with some sort of pink and purple Pokémon scattered across them.
A smile crossed my lips as I figured out what kind of Pokémon they were. The Pokémon appeared to be sleeping, curled up in a ball as a smoky cloud escaped its nostrils.
Let's just say, karma just hit him hard for what he did yesterday. Unfortunately, I couldn't make fun of him as Rena quickly spoke up, holding up the key.
"J-E-T-G," Rena said.
Rudi was completely clueless, scratching the top of his head, which made Rena groan in response. She grabbed my wrist, marched towards the door, and grabbed Rudi with the other one. I heard him give a quick ow as the key must've dig into his hands somehow.
While we were being dragged by Rena, I looked over towards Rudi, giving him a mischievous smile. "Musharna pjs?"
His face turned red. "Says the girl with the Vanillite pajamas."
"How'd yo—if you looked in my dresser, I swear—" I argued.
"Will you two shut up!" Rena yelled, turning her head to look at her brother while still dragging us behind. I was already too scared to get my hand out of her grasp, but seeing her like this really made me have any thoughts of escaping her grasp fly out the window.
Rudi looked at me, smirking. "She started it."
"Oh my gosh! You're eighteen! Not eight," Rena snapped. "Start acting like it."
Her words shut Rudi right up. Rena turned her head to look straight ahead. As she did, Rudi glared at me, silently accusing me. My eyes widened in defense. Rudi rolled his eyes at me before giving a playful wink.
We didn't say anything else as we found ourselves standing in front of a wall with a single lever on it. Rena let go of our wrists, and pulled the lever down.
When the staircase revealed itself, Rena didn't say anything else as she bolted down the stairs. I didn't even get to look at Rudi as he rushed behind his sister to see why she was in such a rush. I looked down the stairs, realizing something.
It's been a long time since I've been here. After finding out Braviary's true identity as Rudi, I found out my parents were the actual Unfezant Man and Swanna Girl, the original ones that is. Though, now that I think about it, Landon had an Unfezant, with no Braviary. If he was the original Braviary Man, shouldn't he have that Pokémon rather than an Unfezant?
Those thoughts didn't last long as I quickly ran down the stairs, running after Rudi and Rena. I had a feeling something big was about to happen, something that was going to unlock my past, metaphorically that is.
By the time I got downstairs, Rudi and Rena were looking through a bookshelf that was shoved against a wall that was covered with newspaper articles about the old Unovan superheroes.
Instead of helping out, I noticed one of the articles as it caught my eye.
Where is Swanna Woman?
By Nancy Budew
It's been four years since Swanna Woman has disappeared into thin air alongside her sidekicks, The Unfezant and Braviary Man. These three have made an impact here in the Unova region, though, these past four years have made them a mystery.
Their adventure started nine years ago, when a robber tried robbing the Castelia City Bank. These three superheroes came out of nowhere and stopped the crime. Soon, this trio of superheroes started making Unova a safer place, putting a stop to three of Unova's most wanted criminals: Maddox Powers, The Black Charizard, and Malcolm Gunter. With all these villains here in Unova, we always felt safe when they would come around and save the day.
It's been four years, so now what? Will Swanna Woman return? Is Unova safe from now on? We may never know, but there is one question burning through all of us. What are these trio of superheroes doing now?
My head dropped a bit, seeing the article below it. I almost laughed, seeing how ironic everything was.
Nacrene's New Normal
By Katherine Plummer
Today, Nacrene City has a new Gym Leader, Jenna Grey. Trainers better be on their toes as they challenge this Gym Leader. I had the privilege to have an interview with the gym leader, who revealed a bit about her battle tactic.
Question: What can Trainers look forward to in their battles?
Grey: Trainers need to come in with a malleable plan. I'm always changing my battle strategy as a way to prepare these Trainers for the Pokémon League.
Question: What kind of Pokémon do you use?
Grey: Audino, Minchino, and Sawsbuck. These may sound like an easy team to defeat, but my Pokémon are very high level and have learned to adapt to any situation.
Last Question: What inspired you to take over the gym?
Grey: Lots of reason, but if I had to choose just one, I say it's my duty to teach all the skills to become stronger and smarter Trainers. If I can do that, then I will have done my job right.
Well, there you have it. Welcome to the Nacrene City Gym, Jenna Grey. I think it is safe to say we can expect great things from this Gym Leader.
My eyes stared at the second answer. All I knew of was Audino. I wonder where her other two Pokémon went or are at for that matter. More importantly, I never knew my mom took on the position as a gym leader before she—
"Sylvia, you've got to see this!" Rudi invited.
I turned around, seeing him and Rena looking over at something. Rudi held a wooden box on his hands where I could clearly see the four letters—JETG—etched into it. Not wanting to hold them up to hold up any longer, I walked over and looked inside the box where three items laid inside. My eyes widened.
Slowly, I reached for the simplest item laid inside: a picture. Sure, I've seen pictures of my parents before, but I usually tried and avoid them. I never wanted to know what they were like because they were a past I wanted to forget about. Again, I understand how rude and disrespectful that might have sounded, but that's just how I felt about the matter.
My eyes were glued onto the picture. A woman with long black hair stood in a white dress with a bouquet of daisies in her hands. Her silver eyes were glowing as she smiled brightly in the picture. Her newly wedded husband—a man with dark hair who seemed to be smaller than the suit he wore—wrapped his arms around her. I've never seen anyone so happy before, not even when someone who's won their very first Pokémon battle.
Their Pokémon—a familiar looking Unfezant and a Swanna—stood in front of them, looking directly at the camera. I noticed two bridesmaids by my mother's side: Wendy and Nurse Joy. They were smiling while wearing these yellow dresses. Standing beside my dad was Landon, who wore a simple yellow bowtie with his tuxedo. Everyone looked so happy.
Slowly, I turned the photo over, feeling tears trying to fight their way to my eyes. The date was just a month before my mom became a Gym Leader at the Nacrene gym, exactly three years before both my parents died. This entire time I thought they were married longer than that. I didn't know. Only three years of being together. That wasn't long.
"I'm sorry," Rudi apologized.
I didn't look up from the picture as I turned it over to look at their faces once more. My parents must have been some really incredible people. I just wish I could've known them.
"It's not your fault they're dead," I retaliated. "There's nothing you need to be sorry about."
"Still," Rena whispered softly before raising her voice. "It's not fair."
"It's over, and there's nothing I can do about it," I snapped, tightly holding the picture in my fingers, "Just let it go and move on."
Neither of the Rhea siblings said anything as I folded the picture and tucked it away in my pocket. I wasn't going to cry. It's been fifteen years. Their death has never bothered me before, so why now? It didn't make sense.
Putting it all behind me, I looked in the box, seeing the other two items. The first was a rusted looking Poké Ball. A part of me wanted to see what was inside of it if there was something actually in it that is, but Rena grabbed the piece of paper opening it up. I watched as her eyes widened.
"What is it?" I asked.
Rena looked up at me, holding up a map of some sort.
"Don't tell me that's what I think it is," Rudi said, shoving the wooden box in my hands before grabbing the map.
"It is," Rena confirmed.
"What is it?" I asked again.
"It's what Team Miamsa is after," Rudi revealed before looking me in the eyes.
"What do you mean?" I carefully asked, "I thought you said they were trying to control the legendaries to bring terror."
Rena drew a short breath, "That's the gist of it all, except, there's one more thing we haven't be telling you."
"What do you mean?" I asked agin.
Rudi and Rena exchanged looks. Both of them seemed uncertain whether or not to tell me the truth. We've worked together on stopping Team Miasma for weeks, and yet they were still hiding something from me. What could be so bad about Team Miasma that they've decided to hide from me.
Soon, Rena took a deep breath. "Team Miasma wants to kick everyone out of Unova."
"I know that," I said.
Rudi shook his head, "It's much more than just that. Once they get everyone out of here, making everyone feeling like this place is unlivable, they want to control the Unova legendaries and attack all the other regions until they have total control of the entire world. All the legendaries are easy to find, except for Kyurem. If they could find Kyurem and combine its power with another Pokémon, well, not only will they make Unova suffer, but they'll make sure everyone suffers, no matter what region they are in."
"But," Rena said, "If they do that, everyone might as well be dead as they aren't going to tread lightly."
My stomach knotted. This wasn't good. This wasn't good at all.
"You alright?" Rena asked.
"We need to stop them," was all I said before tucking the wooden box under my arm and running out of the room. I didn't even know what was on that map. Whatever it was, it couldn't have been good.
If we failed, then Unova wouldn't be the only region in trouble. It would be the entire world. All I could imagine was the world engulfed in flames as the only people that were safe would be Team Miasma. I couldn't let that happen.
