Chapter 1: The Start

The day my parents died was the day I became Nurse Joy's assistant. Apparently, she was a close friend of my mom and was more than happy to take me in. I don't remember much about that day. Then again, I didn't remember much about my parents. They passed when I was only two years old.

Now, before you say anything, I know what you're thinking. Poor girl. No one should ever lose their parents at such a young age. Here's what I think. How can you miss something you can't remember? Nurse Joy has always acted like a parent to me, so I never wondered what my parents were like.

Of course, I could see how much it bothered Nurse Joy I never asked. Fifteen years living with her, I knew she wanted to tell me what they were like, what kind of Pokémon they had raised, and probably how they met. I guess I just had other things to worry about I didn't care.

Sounds heartless of me, I know, but that's just how I saw things. That doesn't make me a heartless person. Instead of dwelling over the question of who they were, I helped out in the Pokémon Center in Nacrene City.

But there was only one day I was never allowed to help out. This was because Nurse Joy believed I should have one day off a week. On this day, I would walk outside the Pokémon center, maybe visit the museum, venture out to Pinwheel Forest, or just walk around.

I pulled my long dark hair in a braid and shoved a hat on top, and turned to look at myself in the mirror. My silver eyes reflected through my thin rimmed glasses in the mirror as I wore a white shirt with a pair of blue pants. If I was going to go out, I was going to be ready for anything, so there was no way I was going to wear a dress.

Nurse Joy knocked on my door, making sure I was doing alright. I opened the door, seeing her bright smile with Audino by her side.

"Good morning, Sylvia," Nurse Joy greeted. "You're up early."

"Good morning. Do you need any help around the Pokémon Center today?" I asked.

As always, the pink haired nurse shook her head. "It's your day off. Go, enjoy yourself for once. I'll have supper ready for you."

Nodding my head, I grabbed my brown satchel from behind the door and ran out of the Pokémon Center. Being that it was only eight in the morning, not many Trainers were here. There was only a few that were just waking up, sitting there with a cup of coffee in their hands, wondering why they were up in the mornings.

I could remember on my tenth birthday, Nurse Joy had asked if I wanted to see Professor Juniper to choose a starter Pokémon. Unlike any young ten year old, I denied the chance to start on my journey. My life at the Pokémon center was good enough. It was then I revealed to Nurse Joy what I really wanted to do.

My plan was that on my 18th birthday, I'd be applying to nursing school. It helped I studied under a Nurse Joy because that's how people usually get in. There were very few non-Nurse Joys who worked in a Pokémon Center, which, when I think about it, is kinda strange. It didn't matter though.

I had my whole life planned out.

It was a bright day in Nacrene City. There weren't many clouds in the sky. The chances of the weather turning bad rarely happened here, so I was fine. As any normal day would go, I walked over to a small cafe, getting myself my usual black coffee and banana for breakfast.

As I did this, I heard a lot of whispering around the cafe. The place was small with five small tables for people to sit in. Today, Trainers and people who either lived or traveled here flooded this cafe. Because of this, my plan was to just get out of here and eat my breakfast in some peace and quiet had disappeared. Chatter of Trainers filled the room, which was odd.

But as the barista was making a fresh pot of coffee, I couldn't help feeling a bit intrigued as to what was going on. There wasn't even a t.v. around to be showing some sort of big battle going on.

Instead, I turned to look at the Trainer beside me. He kept the hood of his dark colored jacket over his head, with a baseball hat poking from underneath. His head was down, but even so, I could see strings of light blonde hair sticking out from underneath. I also noticed a single Poké Ball on his belt, but it wasn't just a regular Poké Ball. This was a Premiere Ball, a kind of Poké Ball that was completely white with the exception of a red line at circled around it.

"Good morning," I chirped, trying not use my—as Nurse Joy would call it—nurse voice. "How are you today?"

The Trainer looked over at me shocked that I was talking to him. "Me?"

I laughed. "Not much of a morning person, huh?" I asked.

"Here's your coffee Miss. Sylvia, and what can I get you this morning, young man?" The barista asked.

"A cappuccino," The Trainer said, laying the money down.

As the barista went to the back to prepare the Trainer's cappuccino, I took a deep breath. "So, do you know what everyone is so excited about? I've never seen so many people out and about, especially on a Sunday morning."

The Trainer threw his head back in shock, allowing me to catch a glimpse of these unforgettable navy blue eyes. I don't think I've ever seen anyone with that shade of blue eyes before, and I've worked with Nurse Joy healing many Trainers' Pokémon before. He must've noticed and quickly lowered the bill of his cap to go unnoticed.

"You haven't heard? The famous Braviary Man is making a visit here," He explained.

My stomach turned. I never understood why people fell head over heels with this guy. He was dubbed as Unova's Superhero, but for that, he needed a villain. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for a group of villains to run around Unova, causing havoc.

After what happened a long time ago with Team Plasma, I didn't think there could be a worse villainous team. No one did. That was why Team Miasma was so dangerous. Everyone let their guard down.

But we had Braviary Man to save the day. Yuck. I didn't care. A guy flying around with a mask and costume practically just to be saving the day in. Instead, it was just downright ludicrous.

Who was this Team Miasma anyways? Well, they were a group of bad guys who specialize in Dark and Poison-Type Pokémon, but occasionally they used other types too. The odd thing about them is that most of the Pokémon they use aren't even from the Unova region, which is strange within itself. At least we all know that they aren't from here, especially since I've seen grunts use Pokémon like Grimers of greens and purple, Weezings, Poochyenas, and Murkrows all over the news. Some did have some Unovan Pokémon, such as a Scraggy and Trubbish, but a majority of these Dark and Poison-Type Pokémon were from other regions.

To make matters worse, every time they attack, the city they land in ends up reeking for weeks. Right now, Opelucid City was off limits due to the smell being the worst on record, which made headlines. Not only did it reek there, but because the Gym Leader was furious and refused to leave. Apparently, no one could get her out. News reports say it would be some sort of miracle if she's alive.

Of course, Braviary Man was the one and only superhero that could save the day from Team Miasma's mysterious plans. This meant that he had to be there, and sometimes, he'd be there to help rescue people from some toxic buildings and help clog sewers. However, the news reports always made it sound like him and his trusted partner in crime, Braviary (no surprise), was always there from the top of the crime, fighting the entire time.

I never believed one word that was said when that happened.

"Are you alright? Usually girls swoon when they hear he's coming," he mentioned.

"Don't people realize the mistake he's making?" I countered. "If he's some praised superhero, then he needs to be fighting Team Miasma instead of being here."

My words caused the Trainer to flinch, but I didn't care. I never liked this superhero. Hearing that he was here in Nacrene of all places made me sick. I turned around and walked out of the cafe, tired of hearing that this superhero was here.

As I marched out of the cafe, clouded in my own thoughts, I ended up bumping into someone. I fell face first into the sidewalk with my coffee spilling all over the streets.

"Oh my gosh! I am so terribly sorry! I'm such a klutz. Here let me help you."

I looked up to see a girl a few years older than me wearing a business blazer over a red top and wore a matching pencil skirt. My hands reached for my glasses, realizing they were just fine. As for the woman, she had worn a worried expression in her blue eyes and both of her hands were smoothing out her blue hair back into its bun.

"It's fine," I mumbled, picking up my banana and empty cup of coffee that I never even got to taste. "It's fine."

"No! No it isn't," she explained as I stood up. "My name is Ms. Rhea, and I insist on buying you another coffee. What was it? Black? Nothing added?" Ms. Rhea guessed.

It was weird calling her Ms. Rhea. She appeared to be 20. There was no way she could be in her mid-twenties either, which made this whole think kind of confusing. Still, I was impressed by her quickness to figure out what I needed, so I nodded my head.

Ms. Rhea nodded her head before running into the little coffee shop I was in. As she ran inside, I stood outside, slowly peeling my banana as I waited. Once I took a bite out of it, I overheard a couple of girl Trainers walking out of the cafe, squealing about how they were actually going to meet Braviary Man.

Still, there was no way I understood why he was so great. No one talked of the Trainer who put a stop to Team Plasma years ago. Or, no, correction, Trainers and their Pokémon as Team Plasma did make a reappearance just two years after they disappeared.

This was why Pokémon nursing school would be good for me. I hated when people thought they were doing the right thing by harming Pokémon. If people would realize what they would be doing, Team Plasma and Team Miasma wouldn't be a problem. Instead, I just wanted to do my part in healing Pokémon.

This is why I couldn't wait until I turned eighteen. Once I could get into a nursing school, I could heal these Pokémon and not have to worry about hearing all these stories that happens. Besides, it would be a safe place. No one ever attacks a Pokémon center. We heal everyone's Pokémon. Without us, there'd be too many injured ones.

"Here you go, one black coffee," Ms. Rhea's voice chimed.

I smiled, as I turned to face her. She handed me the coffee before she slowly turned around and waved goodbye.

Now with my coffee, and now, finished banana, I could go along with my day peacefully. I smiled as I walked down the streets, drinking my coffee and throwing it and the banana peel in a trash can when I found one.

For what seemed like the entire day, I just walked around the town, saying hi to the few people I knew, and looking at some of the shops. This was how the day usually went. Pretty boring, but if there was one thing I noticed, it was that there were posters of Braviary Man's big arrival at noon today.

The streets where I was at did seem a bit thinned out at the moment. I smiled. Everyone must be at the Pokémon Center, awaiting their beloved and highly admired superhero. I just rolled my eyes, turning down a street without really thinking where I was going.

As I did, I heard a whimpering sound. I didn't think twice as I look around for whoever was making the sound, making me realize my mistake as everything was empty and dark where I was at.

I was in Onyx Alley. This was the only place I dared not go because of how dark it got the further one would travel down it. My hands wrapped around my bag, feeling my heart pounding.

There was a part of me that wanted to flee, but as soon as that thought came, I heard a sound from a particular Pokémon.

I turned around, seeing the blue flying type sitting down crying as her leg was badly wounded. She needed to go to the Pokémon center, and fast!

I bent down beside the crying Ducklett, grabbing a Pokémon treat from my bag and handed it out towards her, "Hi," I cooed. "I won't hurt you. My name's Sylvia. I want to be a Pokémon Nurse someday. If you let me, I can help you."

The Ducklett stopped her crying and looked up at me while tilting her head. Pokémon who live in the streets of any city were very cautious around people. How could they not? Trainers were actively looking for Pokémon to catch, and those that lived in the city, never wanted to have any kind of contact with people.

"I promise, I won't hurt. I just want to help," I cooed.

Slowly, the Ducklet inched her head towards my hand, but before she could eat anything, a horrendous smell entered my nostrils. I knew alleyways were stinky, but I was never expecting this. Besides, this kind of stench couldn't have been ignored from the first place.

That was when the Ducklett pulled away.

"Come on now," I assured, as the smell that was very poignant started to come from nowhere, but I ignored it. "This Pokémon food will help build your strength."

That was when I heard the menacing laugh behind me. My body froze. No one ever came down Onyx Alley. It was an unspoken rule here in Nacrene City. Being that someone was here kind of scared me.

I knew I shouldn't have looked back, but I slowly turned my head. Despite it being a dark alley, it was still light enough to see three figures dressed in dark ghetto clothing. Each of them had a purple M on their jackets.

My whole body froze.

Team Miasma was here in Nacrene City.
