9: Establishing the Family Tree

Over the next few days, you, Zuko and Iroh travelled to the immigration center before Ba Sing Se.

"Can we stop yet? I'm tired." You complained as you dragged your feet.

"Not yet I'm afraid, dear. That building there," Iroh pointed, "is our destination. Could you withstand it?"

"I'll carry you, YN." Zuko offered. He was always up for a way to show off his strength to you.

"Thank you!" You walked up to Zuko, who crouched down in order to carry you on his back.

Iroh laughed at this. He knew you were simply being lazy, but he hadn't expected his nephew to oblige you.

"What's so funny, Uncle?" Zuko glared at him, not appreciating being laughed at by the old man.

"Nothing, nephew. I just hope you won't become too exhausted by the time we arrive."

"Of course not! I'm strong. I can carry her with not problem." He squeezed your calf in reassurance, but to you it just tickled. "Ticklish?" He asked you as you laughed.

"Yes! Don't make me stop ya! I will!" You laughed as you spoke, but Zuko simply smiled and rubbed his point of attack.

As the group plodded on, you quickly fell asleep on Zuko's back, making yourself even heavier. Iroh noticed his nephewe beginning to struggle.

"Strong, eh? The saying goes that when you sleep you double your weight in order to keep from floating away."

"Don't tell me you believe in that Uncle! And I'm... urg... fine!" He was struggling to carry you, but he did manage.

However, as soon as you reached the immigration center and got the tickets, he collapsed onto the ground, jolting you awake.

"Are we in Ba Sing Se?!" You yelled out.

"No, dear. We have however, made it to the immigration center. The next ship out isn't for an hour or so. Please rest. Zuko has already happily taken me up on this offer."

Glancing over, you saw Zuko practically asleep sitting up. Laughing, you pulled his head onto your lap. It was the least you could do for him having carried your dead weight for so long.

At first he felt awkward and uncomfortable showing such affection in a public place, but soon his exhaustion took over and he closed his eyes. As you stroked his short hair, he eventually fell asleep. Iroh took this as an opportunity to talk to you.

"So how are you feeling, YN? Are you enjoying your time away from home?"

"I ain't out here to enjoy it, I'm here to give your brother a piece a ma mind!"

"Of course, of course. But are you enjoying the experiences you are having in the mean time?"

"Experiences like what?"

"First time out of the swamp. First time meeting benders besides yourself. First... kiss?"

"Oh stop it, old man!" You swatted at him. He laughed at this, watching your cheeks turn a light pink.

"First boyfriend?" Iroh continued to tease you.

"Boyfriend? What in tarnation is that?" You asked.

"You don't know? I thought that the idea would have caught on, even in the swamp lands, by now. It's dedicating yourself solely to one person for a period of time."

"Oh, naw, we ain't got nothing like that. Ain't got enough girls fo' it. We just shack up with whoever we feel like that night. My brother Due's real popular. My mama don't see anyone no more. She just ain't want more babies. Says eight was enough for her. 'Specially since she done lost so many."

"Lost? Did your siblings pass, YN?" Iroh asked concerned.

"Yeah, before I was born though. I'm the last baby from her. They used ta call me Fei's replacement."

Iroh was in shock. Fei... that name was the name of the woman he had once loved.

"Are you... are you Fei's daughter?"

"Yup, yup. Huu's ma daddy, Tho is Due's daddy, but we're all kin anyway."

Iroh was overwrought with emotion. Here you were, the child that he had always wanted to have with Fei. He was devastated to hear that she had experienced hardships such as he had. No, that is not correct. Her hardships were six times that of mine. He thought.

"Iroh, are ya okay?" You reached out and touched his shoulder. He looked like he was on the verge of tears.

"Yes, yes, dear. Now, do you care to explain why you still dress like a swamp child, instead of the woman's clothing? I feel like you are old enough for it."

"Naw, ma mama said I was 'er baby so I should just stay young for a little while longer."

"Well you're certainly grown up now!" Iroh chuckled and simply enjoyed the easy conversation that flowed between you both.
