38: Scary Stories
Parting from Malu wasn't any kind of spectacle, and you eventually made it back to the cave to see a bunch of tired, grumpy teens and pre-teens.
"Y'all ain't look too good." You mentioned as you packed up your stuff quickly.
"Well while you were out on a date, we were fighting some chi-blasting monster!" Sokka remarked excitedly. "We could have used your work, you know! Nothing better to stop some massive mutant man than a blood-bender!"
"Well 'scuse me, I coulda just figured it was another part of ya scams." You rolled your eyes, but you were ready to go.
"Alright, well we've got to get going to the next town. Everyone ready?" Katara asked. Earning a nod from each person, you all began your journey to the next town.
After a long walk, everyone finally decided to take shelter in a wood near town. You couldn't help but notice how eerie it was outside, with the shadows and the fog swirling around you.
I kinda wish Zuko was here... You shivered as you hovered around the campfire.
"Let's tell scary stories!" Sokka cheered, causing you to shiver again. You weren't a huge fan of scary stories without someone to cling on to.
You listened in as Sokka told some story about a haunted sword; not too bad.
"Suddenly they heard something from down the hall; a dark 'OooOOOOoooo' It came into the torch light... And they knew... The blade was haunted!" He stood up and pointed his sword at the flames and screamed. But everyone else just stayed silent.
"I think I like the man with the sword for a hand better." Aang remarked.
"I ain't even scared and I am pretty bad with scary stories... That's gotta say somethin'." You sighed.
"Water tribe slumber parties must stink." Toph added.
"No, wait! I've got one." Katara looked around at everyone. "And this is a true Southern water tribe story."
"Is this one of those 'a friend of my cousin knew some guy that this happened to' stories?" Sokka plopped down, unamused.
"No. It happened to Mom." Everyone's eyes locked onto Katara. "One winter, when Mom was a girl, a snowstorm buried the whole village for weeks. A month later, Mom realized that she hadn't seen her friend Nini since the storm. So Mom and some others went to check on Nini's family. When they got there, no one was home; just a fire flickering in the fireplace. While the men went out to search, Mom stayed in the house. When she was alone, she heard a voice."
You squealed and grabbed onto your knees tightly. This was already too scary. Katara's voice changed.
" 'It's so cold, and I can't get warm' Mom turned and saw Nini standing by the fire. She was blue, like she was frozen. Mom ran outside for help, but when everybody came back, Nini was gone."
"Where'd she go?" Sokka asked as he hid behind a large root with you.
"No one knows. Nini's house stands empty to this day, but sometimes people see smoke coming up from the chimney; like little Nini is still trying to get warm.
You were quaking in your boots looking in all directions, ready to freeze anything that moved.
"Wait, guys, did you hear that?" Toph asked nervously as you, Aang, Katara and Sokka huddled closely together. "I hear people under the mountain. And they're screaming!
"Oh don't say that!" You whined, "Like I ain't scared enough!"
"Nice try!" Sokka pulled himself out of the huddle.
"No, I'm serious... I hear something."
