33: Heartache

"...any person is capable of great good or great evil, and I think every person should be given a chance for redemption." Aang finished up the story of his dream.

Zuko... Do ya really deserve one? You sat thoughtfully on the floor as you pondered the meaning of his story.

"I wonder if friendships really can go beyond lives." Toph mentioned as Katara and Aang reached out to hold her hands.

"Well... there's no real scientific proof that--" Sokka began, hand on his chin.

"Shut up and hold hands." Katara cut him off.

After a moment, he paused and then grabbed his sister's hand.

You watched from the floor of this heartwarming scene, and your heart hurt just a little. All this traveling and leaving the swamp and yet... you didn't really have friends. Sure, you got along well enough with most people you met, but the only connections you had made were with Zuko and Iroh. And now, you had left them behind.

"What's wrong?" Aang was suddenly couched down next to you, as everyone else dispersed to take care of the daily tasks before bed.

"I just miss ma friends too." You remarked as you looked up at the avatar.

"Oh? Well we're friends with you. So you don't have to miss them too much!" He had such a happy look on his face, but he didn't really know what you were going through. Your face fell even further into a frown. "What else is troubling you?"

"Heartbreak." You sighed.

"Oh." Aang floated over to sit next to you. "I've been having some love-related problems of my own."

"Ya seem kinda young fo' it. I assume it's our lady of the water o'er yonder." You nodded your head towards Katara, causing Aang to blush.

"Yeah..." He admitted sheepishly. "I know it's not the right time for me to be thinking about that kind of stuff when I'm supposed to be taking on the Fire Lord... but I can't help it."

"I hear ya. But at least the world would root for ya. Zuko and I... ain't no one even really know 'bout us, and they ain't think we good otherwise."

"Why do you say that?" He pulled his knees up to his chin, listening carefully. He really did want to find something that would redeem Zuko. He had thought that perhaps being able to love someone would do that.

"Zuko and I was datin' or whatever it was, but he had a girl back in the Fire Nation. In the swamp, ain't no one do that. We all share each other. But I thought Zuko'd do that for me, ya know?"

"That mopey girl?" Aang asked.

"The very one. And we tried, I thought, but he ain't able ta do it. I was a secret and I ain't like that either. So I left."

"I wouldn't like that either." Aang remarked. "But if he really loved you, he'd probably do something about you leaving. Wouldn't he?"

"Yeah, pro'ly. I just wish I ain't have to leave 'im. He coulda been good."

"You know, YN. I think he could be good too."
