The Demon Calls

"Star!" Angie calls, "breakfast!"

Star sighs, and doesn't reply. She looks in the mirror. She thinks about the possibility of gaining weight. She can't gain weight. She knows Moon would send her back if she did. She decides to skip breakfast today...

By faking naseua.

Star heads to the restroom and makes herself vomit. She then yells, "my stomach's acting up! I can't eat right now!"

Marco, sitting at the table, lets out a long, agitated, sigh that hides his concern for Star.

"I'm gonna eat upstairs," he explains taking his plate and piling on extra food.

Marco heads up to speak to Star...

Star sits in her room. She sighs as she stares at her reflection, her view of herself twisted by the years of abuse. She decides to call the only one who knows the truth about her. The one who helped her through those years.

"Mirror," Star sighs, "call Tom..."

The mirror blinks to life. "Calling Tom" the robotic voice says.

It was only a few moments before Tom answered. His image flashed onto the screen. "Hey Star!" Tom smiled at her.

"Hey Tom." Star replied, she looked down at her hands.

"What's up? Is something wrong?"

"When is anything right?" She asked looking up at him.

"Well I was thinking that we could," Tom began but was cut off by a knock on Star's door.

"Hey Star!" Marco calls from the other side of the door.

"Yes?" Star calls from her bed.

"I brought you food."

"Who is," Tom tried to say before Star quieted him.

"Shhhh." Star lifted her finger to her lips. "I said I wasn't feeling well, I don't want any."

"You need to eat." Marco says, "can I come in?"

Star wanted to say no, but she was taught to always be polite, so she straightened her back and stood up, walking to the door.

She opened it and looked at Marco with a smile, "I'll just take the food if you don't mind."

"What's wrong?" He asked, "Why can't I come in?"

"Uhhhh..." Star hesitates, "I'm..."

"If you don't eat," Marco warns, "I'm telling Angie about your issue."

"What if she calls Moon?" Star asks.

"That's a chance I'm willing to take," Marco bluffs, "so, tell me what's going on."

"Fine," Star sighs, "you've got me. I'm calling my boyfriend."

"How in the world do you have a boyfriend?" Marco inquires, shocked, not only by the fact she has a boyfriend, but an unfamiliar brew of emotions. Is it rage he feels? Sadness? He doesn't understand it. So, like every other emotion he's felt since his father died, he burries it deep deep down.

"It's..." Star sighs, "a long story."

"Who are you talking to?" Tom asks, red jealousy in his eyes."

"Just my friend Marco," Star explains.

"So how did this start?" Marco asks.

"When I was..." Star sighs, "in 'the place' I grew desperate. I summoned a demon. He... was there for me. Comforted me. He smuggled in contraband I would use to cope with everything."

"Fine," Marco shrugs, "That makes sense. Here's your food. Now you better eat it."

"I will," Star smiles.

"See ya," Marco walks off.

Star sets the plate of an omelette and a waffle on her bedside table, her stomach growling.

"Wait," Tom asks, "are you still not eatting? Star we talked about this!"

"I know..." Star replied slowly, "But I'm scared, you know that. I have to stay thin, stay proper, stay..." she trailed off.

"Perfect?" Tom finished for her, "Star what your doing isn't perfect! It isn't proper or healthy, you need to eat."

"But Moon! If she finds out she'll send me back to Mewni! I can't go back... you know that!"

"Well It's a good thing she isn't going to know." He said, "Now eat!"

"TOM!" Star yelled, "you know I can't! Moon is watching, I can feel it! I thought you were supposed to be my boyfriend? Support me instead of hinder me!"

"Well when your acting like an idiot I can't support you!" He yelled back, his eyes glowing red

Tears weld up in Star's eyes. "How, how could you say that to me?"

The glow disappeared from his eyes, "I'm sorry I didn't mean it! Please forgive me."

"It doesn't matter." Star said reaching for the end call button.

"Star? Star don't go!"

"Bye Tom." She says as her finger touches the button.

"STAR! Don't hang up!" Tom screamed, his eyes growing red and fire surrounding him.

Star pressed the button and the mirror darkened.

Star sits on her bed, crying. She remembers when she first met Tom. It was at Henious's school. She was eleven at the time. She was in her room, crying as the guards patrolled the halls late at night.

That's when he appeared. He snuck in the window, wearing a coat with pockets filled with various contraband items. Chocolate and other sweets, fidget toys, saucy novels, and anything else under the sun that a tween or teen girl could want.

Tom was shocked to see Star crying. Most princesses were composed during their transactions. However, Star wasn't maintaing her facade when Tom arrived.

"Hey," Tom greeted her with a kind smile.

Star turned around, surpised to see a demon. She put on a fake smile and greeted, "hello sir. I don't think you're in the right place."

"Drop the act Star," Tom chuckles, "I'm making a delivery. You like chocolate, right?"

"Yeah," Star replied, "why?"

"River told me to give you this," Tom smiled offering Star a chocolate bar, "take it. He already payed. It's on him."

Star took the chocolate bar from Tom without complaint, as she was taught to always be nice, and you never know who was watching.

She looked down at the chocolate and then back up at Tom, "are you not leaving?" She asked.

"I've got time, aren't you going to eat the sweet?" He asked leaning against the wall.

"I can't," She said shaking her head.

"Are you allergic or something? I mean you said you liked it, plus i think your dad would know if you couldn't have it."

"No... its just... I can't have it, I'm not allowed." Suddenly she heard foot steps and she jumped up from the bed, shoving the chocolate back into his arms and pushing him into the drabness, just in time before a guard walked past her room.

"I can't take it back, might as well just eat it." He said offering it back.

"I would, but I just can't." She said holding back tears, but she could hold it any longer and sat down on her bed bursting into tears.

"Ummmmm." Tom watched her cry not sure what to do until he finally placed a hand on her shoulder and said "there, there... I'm sure it's fine."

"You don't understand!" Star said through tears.

"Alright fine, I don't know, but can I have the chocolate if you aren't ?"

"Sure." She said, wiping tears from her eyes trying to calm down.

Tom opened the wrapper and ate a bit of the chocolate, before separating a square and holding it out to her, "you can't just have one bit?" He asked

"Alright, fine I guess" she said taking the cube and popping it into her mouth. She smiled, chewed it and swallowed before her eyes grew in horror. She realized what she'd done and her hands immediately covered her mouth. She practically burst into tears again as she ran to the bathroom.

Star slowly stoped crying, the flashback fading away. She remembered that day, she even remembered Tom knocking on the door in worry when she was there for so long.

"You OK?" Marco asks, snapping Star back To the present.

"I'm fine," she lies.

Her stomach roars with hunger. Marco eyes the plate, the food untouched.

"I don't get it," he sighs, "why won't you eat?"

"A good princess is trim and fit," Star says with her mouth forced in a smile, but her eyes, are crying. Screaming for help. Something wells up inside Marco. An urge. A desire. A mission. A reason to go on. To not yet kill his father's

To help Star.

Marco drops his act and hugs Star.

"It's OK to be yourself," he explains, "you're safe here. I promise."

Star isn't sure how to reply at first, but eventually hugs Marco. She feels something. A hope. A happiness.

She feels like herself again.

Immediately after letting go of Marco, she begins wolfing down the food. Marco sits, quietly returning to his facade as he makes sure Star eats. She smiles at Marco, but the smile isn't pristine and forced. It's real. She smiles as herself. Marco drops his facade again, for one last moment, and smiles back.

They both want to tell the other about their true self. That it's all an act, but they can't. So, they sit silently. Exchanging glances and grins. Hoping, praying for the day...

They can be themselves...
