[24] Stare

"Does Thoma really have to be here?" Ayato asks. That evening a few days after the finals he was having dinner with his sister, (y/n), and Thoma who insisted on moving into the Kamisato residence to be with Ayaka all the time.

She ate poorly, appeared pale often, was sick in the mornings. Her brother already knew what was up even without finding the pregnancy test and was just waiting for her to bring it up to him herself.

And for that he was furious with Thoma but wouldn't beat him to the pulp because Ayaka is in love with him.

"I won't say or do anything to provoke you or (y/n). If it helps, just pretend I'm not here." Thoma is genuine with his words. He did want to take any opportunity to poke at them two, especially (y/n). But looking after Ayaka is his priority.

"Alright then. That shall work."

(Y/n) looks at Thoma, then Ayato. They wanted to break the uninviting atmosphere those two created. "Sooo... Ayaka! The results for the finals should be out soon, I'll let you know if I surpass Jean. If I do then we'll have another party! If I don't, we'll still have a party."

"Yeah, that sounds fun!" Ayaka felt a bit of nostalgia in hearing (y/n) talk about tests. During the first semester she sometimes brought up (y/n) to the other student council members, saying that they'd be really helpful if they ever decided to join the group.

She always looked up to them, and how they seemed so unbothered towards everything else in the world.

"Maybe I'll bring stocking too, she's gotten pretty comfy around everyone at home. A little too comfy with Kokomi. She's constantly nibbling at her hand."

"Doesn't Kokomi have pet fishes? Maybe stocking smells the fishes on her."

"If she had a bigger apartment or her own house, she'd probably have a life sized fish tank and swim in it."

"I'm positive that's an idea Albedo would love to draw." Ayato takes part in their head cannons of their friends.

"I never realized you've gotten so close to Albedo that things begin to make you think of him." (Y/n) teases, knowing he didn't quite like the artist.

"Ah ha ha, so you'd support your lover thinking of other individuals?"

"Friends think of their friends don't they? Nice try."

"Brother's feeble attempts on making (y/n) jealous because he can't manage his own jealousy." Ayaka giggles.

While the three banter, Thoma is staring intently at Ayato, like an obsession. (Y/n) noticed it, checking every now and then to confirm their suspicion. He wasn't glaring at Ayato, he stared like someone in love. Ayato wouldn't notice it himself since he refused to make eye contact with his ex, acting as if he isn't there.

They brush it off, not wanting to stress about it. For now at least.

After dinner, Thoma stays at the table with Ayaka. Ayato takes (y/n) to his room, needing to talk to them about something important in private.

"So what's it about this time? Going to rant about Thoma being here again?" They ask.

"That's not too far off. It's about Ayaka. I don't like to say things, without my solid proof either but I think she's pregnant."

"I can't say that worry didn't cross my mind either. So are you going to confront her about it?"

"I've been waiting for her to tell me herself."

"Don't you think it's best to confront her yourself? If it's true that she is then she's probably so scared about how you'll react that it's making her mental and physical health deteriorate."

"That's true but—"

"You're a big smartass aren't you? Go do what's best for your sister. Not what's best for your ego."

"Are you trying to inflate or deflate my ego?"

Towards 9 PM, after (y/n) goes home, Ayato knocks on the door to his sister's room. Thoma is staying in one of the extra rooms in the mansion.

"Yes brother?" Ayaka rushes to open the door.

"I want to ask you something. Please answer honestly. Regardless of what you say I won't be angry, I promise."

"It sounds like you already know then." She sighs. "I'm sorry Ayato."

She turns around to get the pregnancy test hidden under papers in a cabinet and shows it to him.

"I'm sorry..." Ayaka repeats.

For the both of them, it is too many emotions at once to handle. Ayato pulls his sister into a hug, unable to say a word.

At (y/n)'s end they were too busy playing with stocking to care about anything else for the meantime.

"I really think getting a cat is one of the best decisions I've made in my life." Their mom says proudly.

"10 out of 10 would agree."
