Chapter 6

Paddock 11 was a large fortress-like structure with forty foot reinforced walls and an emormous gate at the front. It appeared as if the exterior was still under construction. The helicopter touched down roughly and everyone got out. The instructor, clutching his stomach, ran away and vomited into some bushes.

"Is he okay?" Claire asked her boss. She yelled over to the instructor, "Are you okay?" Not getting a response.

"Oh, he's just being dramatic," Masrani sounded dismissive. He watched construction workers welding things together. He looked at the building. "Are you still building?..." Claire nodded.

"We planned to open in May, but Asset Containment insisted we build the walls up higher. It's bigger than expected." Masrani stood for a moment observing how huge the walls were. Seeing a man welding large iron bars while others carry other materials around.

"It's a good sign." Claire led Masrani into the paddock's observation room, a large control room with computers and enormous windows overlooking the interior of the enclosure. The supervisor, Nick, stood at one of the touch screen thermal imaging consoles as they come in. Masrani took off his sunglasses.

"We hit a few speedbumps early on. It began to anticipate where the food would come from." She gestured for Nick to leave and he exited, leaving the two of them alone. "One of the handlers nearly lost an arm. The others threatened to quit if I couldn't guarantee their safety." They go to the windows. At the moment, they couldn't see anything but dense jungle. While Claire tapped the computer screen.

"She's intelligent, then?" He stared out of the glass.

     "For a dinosaur," she concluded.

"And that?" He replied darkly as he pointed to one of the windows which has been cracked.

"It tried to break the glass."

"I like her spirit..." They heard a growl outside. Something enormous began to move through the trees at the far end of the enclosure. They saw the outline of a large theropod dinosaur with white skin moving through the trees, but the Indominus Rex didn't fully emerge. Masrani stared at her in awe. "Oh, it's white...You never told me it was white..." Claire came over and joined him.

"Think it'll scare the kids?..." She sounded concerned.

"The kids? This'll give the parents nightmares..." He said absently.

     "Is that...Good?" She was uncertain.

"It's fantastic..." He was still in awe. Outside, the Indominus' yellow eye peered at the two humans through the foliage. "Can she see us?" He asked.

"They say it can sense thermal radiation, like snakes."

"Say, I thought there were two of them."

"There was a sibling in case this one didn't survive infancy."

     "Where's the sibling?"

"She ate it," she stated in a matter-of-fact. Masrani stared at her wide-eyed. She simply smiled nervously. He nodded and looked up at the ceiling. Outside, the Indominus Rex moved away through the jungle.

"So the paddock is quite safe, then?"

"We have the best structural engineers in the world." She nodded while going to the other computer and typing in some more while sliding her finger across it.

"Yeah, so did Hammond." Claire didn't respond. "There's an American Navy man here. Part of a research program one of my companies is running. Owen Grady, and Marlo—I believe that's her name. His little sister, only sixteen. I've met her, haven't I?" Claire looked a little miffed.

"You've only met her. I know who they are."

"His animals often try to escape. They're smart. He has to be smarter."

Claire smiles mirthlessly. "He only thinks he's smarter..." Masrani noticed her tone but let it pass without comment. "Marlo is just quick witted and highly sarcastic at the wrong time," Claire mumbled off towards the end, knowing how she got the black eye.

"I want you to bring him in. Let him inspect the paddock. Maybe he sees something we can't."

The light shines down passed the trees, the leaves creating an almost green coloured glow, while some birds chirp away. A piglet snorts loudly while running through the tall grass, squealing while being followed by heavy footsteps of a large Raptor. The piglet went running into a slot.

     "Hey!" Owen spoke up.

The Raptors stopped chasing the piglet while all coming together snorting and sniffing the air.

"Hey!" They saw Owen with his hand up and a clicker in his hand. "Okay eyes on me." They looked up. "Blue." He clicked the clicker and pointed at her. "Watch it, Charlie. Hey!" He shook his head at her. "Don't give me that shit." He looked to the other. "Delta, lock it up, good." He clicked the clicker. "And...We're moving." He walked along the catwalk up the top with his hand still up and the Raptors followed.

The Raptors stared at him, tilting their heads and continuously sniffing the air, still wanting the piglet.

"Hold." He stopped at a bucket. "Hey that's good, that is damn good." He clicked it again and reached for the bucket. "Very good, see, Charlie-" He threw the dead rat. "That's what you get. Echo, there you go. Delta. Blue-" He clicked. "This ones for you." He threw it and she caught it in her mouth. "Hold. Eyes up-" They watched him. "Go!" He pulled his hand down and they ran off. Barry came over laughing.

"You finally did it man." They hugged quickly and pulled back.

"Owen." Hoskins came over laughing and patted people on the back, pointing at him. "I was starting to think I hired the wrong guys but damn you got them eating out of your palm." He motioned to his own hand.

"You came on a good day, it's not usually a happy ending." They shook hands.

"Is that why you're not sending in your reports?"

"We've been busy," Barry piped up.

"Not too busy to cash your pay-checks," Hoskins joked.

"Uh, what'd you need, buddy?" Owen nodded.

"Field test," he replied, Owen walks away, but Hoskins followed. "Hey, I've just seen they can respond to commands, you need to take your research and get it on its feet."

"Wild animals, Hoskins, trust me, you don't want them in a field."

"I just saw a bond. A real bond. Between man and beast."

"You're in my way," Owen said as Hoskins stopped in front of him.

"C'mon. We're the same, we're dogs of war. We know that the military needs to reduce casualties. Some people think that robots are the future." Owen began to walk again. "Look nature gave us the most effective killing machines 75 million years ago, and now we know they can take orders." Owen stopped.

"We finally make progress and that's the first thing he says? Make a weapon?" Barry asked as he caught up to the two.

"Shit. Come on, gents. It's grown-up time. Drones can't search tunnels and caves. And they're hackable. The minute a real war breaks out, all that fancy tech is gonna go dark," Hoskins explained to them.

"But that tech's not gonna eat them if they forget to feed it," Owen counter argued. "Besides they aren't just my pack, Marlo wouldn't agree to it. Her and me, we have the same views," he explained and Hoskins jaw tightened and he motioned to the Raptors.

"Look at these creatures. They've got millions of years of instinct in their cells, instinct that we can program." He placed a hand on his hip as he watched them. "Their loyalty cannot be bought. These guys are gonna run straight into the enemy's teeth and eat them, belt buckle and all." He pointed to the Raptors with both hands.

"What if they decide they wanna be in control?" Barry questioned.

"Well, then we remind them who is. We terminate the rogues. Promote only loyal bloodlines.," Hoskins answered while Barry laughed. "What? What's so funny?" Barry laughed again and walked off while Owen whistled.

"I don't know. You come here and you don't learn anything about these animals except what you want to know." Owen looked at them. "You made them, and now you think you own them." He shrugged.

"We do own them. Extinct animals have no rights," Hoskins disagreed.

"They're not extinct anymore, Hoskins." Owen started to walk off.

"Exactly," Owen collected a bucket from a worker. "We're sitting on a goldmine. And Masrani is using it to stock a petting zoo," Hoskins tried to persuade Owen, while following him down the stairs.

"He just wants to teach people some humanity. He doesn't make weapons." Hoskins laughed at him.

"You think that the eighth richest man in the world is only into oil, telecom, and family fun parks? He's so diversified, he doesn't even know what he owns." Owen didn't look back and continued to walk as he asked.

"How long has InGen been practicing this pitch?"

"Since the day we hired you out of the Navy. You knew the end game. These animals can replace thousands of boots on the ground." Owen walked into a gated area while Hoskins stayed outside. "How many lives would that save?" Owen pressed a red button. "War is part of nature. Look around, Owen. Every living thing in this jungle is trying to murder the other." Owen put the bucket down and fixed some of the metal work. "Mother Nature's way of testing her creations. Refining the pecking order. War is a struggle. Struggle breeds greatness. Without that, we end up with places like this, charging seven bucks a soda." Owen walked up to him.

"Do you hear yourself when you talk?" Hoskins forced a smile.

"This is gonna happen. With or without you boys. Progress always wins, man." Hoskins shook his head at Owen.

"Maybe progress should lose for once." Owen heard the pig and looked over to the sound.

"Pig loose! Pig loose!" The Jurassic World worker, Leon, yelled, as he tried to catch it from the catwalk with a stick used to catch the animals by the necks. The Raptor grabbed the pig just as it's caught and the boy falls in screaming. The Raptors; Blue, Charlie and Delta looked over to him and Owen got ready to go inside, pressing a button to open the gate.

"Owen, no!" Barry yelled. But Owen crawled underneath the slowly opening gate without hesitation. Men up top held their guns ready.

"Oh no, no, hold your fire!"

Owen approached the three Raptors, Owen stood in front of the boy between the Raptors as Barry ran to the gated area.

"Hold your fire, do not fire!" Barry stood by the gate. "Put 12 amps in these animals, they're never gonna to trust me again!" Barry pulled Leon out of the paddock. "Blue, stand down. Stand down."

     Blue snapped at Owen.

"Hey, hey! What did I just say? Delta, I see you. Back up." Delta snarled. "Okay, good. Good," he told them gently.

The Raptors kept moving closer and closer, sniffing the air, turning their heads to get a look at Owen. His hands were still out in front of him while his body was slightly crouched.

"Charlie? Stay right there." Hoskins watched with a smirk as Owen held his arms out. "Good. Close the gate," he told Barry.

     "Are you crazy?"

"Just trust me," Owen said quietly.

"Close the gate!" Leon yelled. Barry hesitated before pressing the button, the gate closing, Owen ran underneath the gate just as it closed. The Raptors hitting against the gate, their clawed hands wrapped around the metal as their snouts puff out a deep breath.

"You're the new guy, right?" Owen asked as Barry leaves laughing.

     "Yeah." He nodded.

"You ever wonder why there was a job opening?" He saw the look of shock on the boys face. "Hey. Don't ever turn your back to the cage." He walked away and Leon looked to a growling Raptor. Hoskins nodded at Owen before he walked away.
