Chapter 2

The snow covered ground was disturbed by the clawed foot of an ordinary bird, chirping away before it flapped its wings and flew off. Karen Mitchell, who was in the drive way loading up the Nissan minivan with luggage turned towards the yellow two story suburban house, and yelled up to the building.

"Boys, let's do this!" Her voice had fallen on deaf ears.

Her son, Gray, was in his room looking at slides of dinosaurs on the blue view master toy, an Allosaurus fighting a triceratops, then glanced at two Ceratosaurs fighting in a scene from 'The Animal World'. His room was covered completely in toys ranging in colours of dinosaurs and monsters as well as a few posters. Karen knocked on the door.

"Gray?" She entered the room. "Honey, what're you doin'? What is this here?" She took the toy and put it down on his desk. "Let's go. Come on, honey your flights in two hours." She walked over to his bed and counted that he had everything while packing up most of his bag.

"Dane County Airport is thirty six minutes away, sixty with traffic," he told her as he turned to look at him mum who smiled.

"How many minutes to get your little butt in the van?" Gray smiled back at her. "Hmm? How many of those?" She picked up his bag and they both walked to the door. "Feed the monster under your bed?" She asked.

     "Yes."

Gray went charging out of the front door of the house a minute later and ran obliviously passed his older brother, Zach, and his girlfriend.

"Call me every day. And text me pics, so I don't forget what you look like."

Zach's mum walked out of the house as his girlfriend held onto his upper arms, his arms on her waist, not really caring that much.

"I'm only gonna be gone a week," he told her. His dad, Scott, sat in the drivers seat, his face showing amusement, but impatience at the same time.

"Zach, you're not going off to war, here. Please. Come on." Zach and his girlfriend look at each other. Scott motioning for them to hurry up.

"I-" He started but she cuts him off.

     "I love you," she interrupted.

"-Will see you later." She grinned at his apparent inability to tell her the same. Not thinking of the possibility that maybe he didn't, in fact love her the way she loved him. That was the thing with Zach, he was unable to show his emotions, he never really cared, he was apathetic.

     "Vamanos!" Scott spoke up.

"Bye. Okay," Zach told her again, without hugging her or giving her a proper goodbye.

"Bye." She smiled as he ran to the van as his father started the engine.

"You in buddy?" Karen asked Zach as his girlfriend waved to him, everyone but her in the van. Their parents turned to look at them, particularly the sullen Zach. "I know it hurts, sweetheart." Karen looked to him.

"Are you gonna be okay?" Scott teased, Zach responded by putting his headphones on, before looking out the window. Gray smiled at his brother before looking out his own window.

-

While at the Dane County Airport, their parents said goodbye to Zach and Gray at the gate of their plane. People were walking about, catching the line early so they didn't have to wait as long, some saying goodbye, others hello. Karen was going over the plane ticket with Gray while Zach ignored them. Looking around hoping that there was something there to distract him. Scott watched the two as they talked.

"Everything right on there?" Gray nodded to her. "I'm so jealous. You're gonna have so much fun." Her smile and pleasant demeanour seemed a little forced. "I love you." She smiled at Gray.

"I love you too." Gray pulled her in for a hug, lasting longer than normal, Karen looked like she was holding back her tears, Gray looked up to his dad who looked uncomfortable but forced a smile.

"Okay. Alright." She pulled away from Gray. "Alright, um, let's give these to your brother, okay?" She turned to Zach and handed them to him, but he was not paying attention, his grey hoodie was over his head and his black headphones were blasting music into his ears, she waved them in front of him. "Can you hold, please?" Still nothing.

"Zach," Scott said a little louder. Zach turned to them and saw his mum with the tickets.

"Can you hold these? Honey, I need you to take care of these." Zach finally noticed, taking his headphones off, and accepted them indifferently.

"Yeah," He responded, his dad spoke up.

"Hey," His dad said getting Zach's attention.

     "Alright-" Karen started.

"Listen to your mother," Scott mentioned to Zach.

"Take care of your brother, answer your phone. I'm serious. It's the green button. When you see my name, push it, okay?" Zach nodded absently. "And remember, if something chases you..." She paused. "Run." Gray smiled at her. "Come on." She pointed at Zach who shuffled on his feet and forced a smile and fake laugh.

"Yeah, you're funny." Zach smiled back half-heartedly. He turned to Gray. "Come on, let's go." He moved Gray along as they headed to the plane, waving awkwardly at their parents.

     "Bye guys." Karen smiled.

     "Bye," Zach repeated.

"I miss you already," she continued.

"Yep," Zach spoke quietly. Once the boys were out of earshot, the parents dropped the act.

"So much for our last family breakfast..." Scott told her, while both of their eyes were watching their boys, who were talking to each other.

"Why do you have to say things like that?"

Gray waved goodbye as he and Zach headed through the gate.

     "Did you call your sister?"

     "Straight to voicemail."

"They'll be fine. She handles twenty-thousand people a day. She can handle two more," Scott commented. But Karen didn't seem to be put at ease just yet.

-

An 'American Airlines Boarding 757' touched down on the tarmac at the Juan Santamaría airport, Costa Rica. Gray and Zach were among hundreds of more people who were all boarding a ferry for Isla Nublar. On the boarding ramps, they had 'Jurassic World' logos.

Gray spoke up, "How big is the island?"

"Big," Zach responded absently, not really wanting to talk to his younger brother at all.

"But how any pounds?" Gray asked again.

"That doesn't make sense," he replied.

-

The ferry sailed across the water. Gray and Zach stood at the front at the rail.

     "When they first opened, they had eight species. Now they have fourteen herbivores and six carnivores. That's like fifty tons of food a week," Gray explained while Zach ignored him, he smiled at some teenage girls on the lower deck, Gray frowned at him. A few minutes later, Isla Nublar came to view and the ferry sailed towards it. The boys got off the ferry along with the other passengers. A park announcers voice was heard over the P.A system;

"Welcome to Isla Nublar, home of Jurassic World. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable stay with us."

The boys stopped as the announcement repeated in another language, seeing a young girl with dirty-blonde hair standing pulling faces at younger children, some giggling and waving their hands at her while some look in shock. They saw her holding a sign saying 'ZACH and GRAY MITCHELL', they both looked at each other.

"Where's aunt Claire? Who's that?" Gray asked.

     "I don't know," Zach mumbled.

"Who is she, though?" Gray continued to watch her.

"I just said that I don't know." Zach looked sullen, the two boys trudged over to the girl, waiting to be shown to the large monorail system which would show them to the actual park. They had no idea who she was, but they were sure that they were going to find out.
