Chapter 12
A herd of Gallimimus flocked together with a Tour Jeep driving beside them with amused tourists looking ahead.
"You guys been here before?" Zach asked a group of girls behind them while Gray stared out of the window. Marlo sat in front of them on two empty seats, she turned around, her knees on the seat as she looks back to the boys. Zach smiled to the girls.
"If Mum and Dad get divorced, will one of us be with Mum and the other with Dad?" Gray asked quietly, Marlo looked between the boys.
"What?" Zach looked to him. "Why would you say that?" Zach looked back to the girls.
"Because they are." Gray looked back to the front, Marlo frowned. Zach turned back to look at him.
"No, they're not getting...They're not getting divorced." Zach stared at him while Gray sniffed and wiped his nose, not looking to Zach. "Look. You haven't been around long enough. They've always been that way." Zach sat back, but Gray shook his head.
"They get mail from two different lawyers." He looked to his older brother.
"That doesn't mean anything." Gray sighed at Zach.
"I googled. They're divorce lawyers." Gray sniffed and tried to hold back tears. Zach processed this new information and stared blankly out the window.
"All right, whatever." He unwrapped his arm from the back of Gray's seat, pulling a face. "You know what? It doesn't matter, okay? I'm gonna be gone in two years anyway. I mean, all my friends' parents are divorced. And..."
"Zach would you just shut up!" Marlo glared at him. Noticing that Gray was silently crying.
"Hey, knock it off," Zach told him. Gray shook his head. "You're gonna cry? Look. You're gonna get two of everything, right? You're gonna get two birthdays, two Thanksgivings, two..."
"I don't want two of everything," Gray told him quietly.
"Yeah, well, it's not up to you. All right? There's a point you have to grow up." Gray looked away and out the window while Zach looked like he almost regrets telling Gray that.
"Zach." Marlo caught his attention.
"What?" He shrugged his shoulders.
"Switch seats with me." She glared, he nodded at her and she got up. Zach moved to sit where Marlo was and Marlo slid in next to Gray. Zach leaned his head back on the chair waiting for the monorail ride to be over when Gray sat up, looking out the window, paranoid, he looked back to Marlo. Marlo followed his gaze.
Two jeeps were driving quickly behind one another on the dirt road. Marlo was surprised that she never saw them before.
-
Back at the canoe area where visitors got to swim near the dinosaurs, one of them let out a small roar. The visitors don't take much notice as they watch and paddle along the water. The two jeeps sped passed.
-
In the control room, the blue screens showed cameras watching the jeeps. Heart rate monitors of the Unit teams were shown on the screens. Each having their own. The list of the eight men; Hamada, Austin, Craig, Miller, Lee, Spears, Meyers, and Cooper are also shown in the cameras inside the jeeps.
Owen walked out of the elevator and into the room before being stopped.
"I need to see a badge. Sir, I need to see a badge." A security guard stopped Owen. Owen walked straight passed, Claire turned to face him.
"What the hell happened out there?" Owen raised an eyebrow.
"Sir."
"There are thermal cameras all over that paddock. She did not just disappear!" Claire sighed at Owens annoyance.
"It must have been some kind of a technical malfunction."
"Were you not watching? She marked up that wall as a distraction. She wanted us to think she escaped!" Owen growled angrily.
"Hold on. We are talking about an animal here."
"A highly intelligent animal."
"400 meters to the beacon," Vivian told them.
Claire turned back to the screens and watched. The men over radios talk to one another.
-
The jeeps continued to drive through a puddle, through the jungle area before pausing. The jeeps stopped and the men got out. Each of them getting their guns ready, all making their way through the foliage and trees.
-
Back at the control room, everyone watched in silence and anticipation.
"You're going after her with non-lethals?" Owen murmured out, his eyebrows furrowed together.
"We have 26 million dollars invested in that asset. We can't just kill it," Mr. Masrani told him, motioning to the screen.
"Those men are gonna die," Owen whispered.
"300 meters to the beacon," Vivian continued.
"You need to call this mission off right now." Owen ignored her.
"They're right on top of it," Lowery informed him.
"Call it off right now!"
"You are not in control here!" Claire spoke up, obviously very stressed.
-
The men in the field lifted up their weapons on alert, some with net machines. The crickets made it harder for them to hear for any movements. One of the guards glanced down at his watch, the image of the tracking device shown on it. They walked through the water, their guns held high.
The leader noticed something by a rock and held his hand up, signaling the others to stop. He kneeled down and noticed a chunk of the Indominous Rex was laying in the water. He picked it up and turned it around, seeing the tracking device.
"Blood's not clotted yet," he spoke into the watch. In the control room, the others were able to see what he saw through the camera. "It's close."
-
"What is that?" Mr. Masrani folded his arms and tilted his head at the screen.
"That's her tracking implant," Owen informed him. "She clawed it out." He watched the screen.
"How would it know to do that?" Claire asked breathlessly.
"She remembered where they put it in."
-
Back in the field, the leader noticed droplets of blood drip onto his hand. He slowly looked up to see leaves covered in blood droplets. He stood back up slowly, holding his gun ready. He turned back to the large group of guards. They all looked up when they heard something break.
The leader heard a shrieking of a bird, the sound of something gets closer and closer. He turned around to see where the sound was coming from. They could only see the leaves on the trees moving, the sound of thudding getting closer and closer. The Indominous Rex stood behind him.
Her jaw opened as he began to yell, "It can camouflage!" Stun guns are out and the Indominous Rex picked him up with her clawed hand. It began crushing him as the others shot and ran back. Trying to run back to the jeeps to get away. It threw him back down in the water and roared.
He went to get back up but her large foot stomped down on his body, crushing his body.
In the control room, Hamada's heart rate turned red and the line went flat.
People in the field try stunning the Indominous Rex, but were thrown back with her tail slammed into them. They tried running but one was grabbed and thrown up in the air. He was thrown backward into a tree.
Craig's heart rate followed the same fate as Hamada's.
Owen turned around to face the others away from the screen. Screaming could he heard over the radio. More heart rates flat out, turning red with an ear-piercing ring. Claire watched in horror.
A net is thrown on the jaws of the Indominous Rex. She shook her head and stumbled, everyone running around her frantically. She clawed Lee with her foot.
His heart rate went off.
She tried clawing the net off her face, growling as she does. She ripped it off and let out a loud roar. Her tail slammed down on two men, killing them instantly. She grabbed one in her jaw, throwing him up and re-catching him in her jaw.
A man is pulled away by two others, his left leg bleeding. Guards still shot at the Indominous Rex. One getting closer as the Indominous Rex edges forward, trying to get out of the way of the bullets. Her mouth closed around his body and his heart rate went flat.
Masrani put his hands together, almost praying, staring at the screen in shock. He brought his hands to his mouth, looking down. Owen turned back from the screen.
"Evacuate the island."
"We'd never reopen." Claire shook her head.
"You made a genetic hybrid, raised it in captivity. She is seeing all of this for the first time. She does not even know what she is. She will kill everything that moves." He pointed to the screen as he paced. Claire stood there just watching him.
"Do you think the animal is contemplating its own existence?" Masrani added.
"She is learning where she fits in the food chain, and I'm not sure you want her to figure that out." Masrani looked back to the screens while Owen continued. "Now, Asset Containment can use live ammunition in an emergency situation. You have an M134 in your armory." Lowery and Vivian glanced at one another. "Put it on a chopper and smoke this thing!"
"We have families here. I'm not gonna turn this place into some kind of a war zone," Claire counter argued.
"You already have."
"Mr. Grady, if you're not gonna help, there's no reason for you to be in here."
Owen slammed his hand own on Lowery's desk, flicking the figurines off and onto the floor. He walked up the stairs and towards Masrani who was leaning against a desk.
"I would like to have a word with your people in the lab. That thing out there, that's no dinosaur." Owen got back into the elevator. Claire looked back to the screens, the cameras showing the guards getting back to the trucks. She saw the body count of the island.
"Okay." She nodded. "I'm going to close everything north of the resort." Masrani walked away. "This is a Phase One, real world. Bring everyone in."
Vivian touched her ear piece. "This is a Phase One, real world. I repeat; this is a Phase One. Bring everyone back in."
