Okay! Rant time!
'The Empty City' the first book in my most favorite series of all time!
And here's what I personally think about it!
***
I'm not gonna get too much into the characters right now, I'll do that in the next Chapter/Part.
But Lucky is my favorite character, I love his street smarts, and admire his cleverness.
And I never exactly understood the thing about Sweet always smelling 'sweet'. How is that possible? Maybe it's just her natural aroma, and it smells good to dogs. I don't know...
And when they were talking about stuff like 'longpaws' and 'loudcages' I was like, 'Uhm, okay then. I suppose I'll figure that out later...' And I did, but I feel like perhaps there should be some sort of key in the beginning or end of each book that says something like,
'Key:
Longpaws=Humans
Loudcages=Cars
Floatcages=Boats
Sharpclaws=Cats
Gaintfurs=Bears' and so on. You get the idea.
But that would actually be rather helpful, and appreciated. But you figure out eventually in the end.
I liked the conflict of Lucky being a Lone Dog, even though he obviously belonged in a pack. Dogs to look out for each other.
But after awhile it started to seem pretty annoying that he would always say, 'I'm a lone dog. Not a pack dog.' And like I said, he obviously belonged in a pack. Especially with Sweet. I wasn't really affected when she just left him, and he didn't follow, I was more like, 'Why would you do that?'
I was thinking recently about the whole character of Old Hunter, and he was rather mean, but he shared food with Lucky for the fact that they were more of 'allies' than friends... And I'm pretty sure Lucky helped Old Hunter fight off some foxes that wanted in on those tasty treasures.
And he runs off with it, bumping into his sister Bella, and her pack of Leashed Dogs.
It was rather obvious to me that Alfie had this ignorant thing in his head that he was invincible or something. I love this character, but sometimes how much he pit himself in danger would get on my nerves.
I don't like that they always (Well except like once or twice) diss at foxes. And they are my favorite animal, so it was a personal thing for me, but I got over it, but it still annoyed me to some extent. Like why can't there be more good foxes?
I was in suspense the whole time about if a character was going to die, and none did. I mean a Longpaw died, and some random dogs on the Trap House with Lucky and Sweet. But it wasn't sentimental attachment.
And I loved that Lucky did in fact help the Leashed Dogs despite his desperate 'need' to be a Lone Dog.
I know they encountered Blade's pack somewhere in this book, and that really shook things up, it was like I could feel the fear, and suspense as Lucky went through that hole in the fence.
I was happy to see that the Leashed Dogs had found a good place to make a camp, and be happy. But I was also sad to see that Lucky still hadn't changed his mind about being a Lone Dog. Then there was that amazing cliffhanger at the end as Lucky was on a hill and had just done some hunting, and he hadn't even meant to catch anything, he was just trying to enjoy himself, then there was a sudden volley of barks.
The BOOM!
End of book one!
