Chapter Three
"Time's up." Me. Washington ordered. "Laptops down. Eyes here." Everyone shut their laptop and looked at the teacher. All they could is wait. Wait for the results. Wait for the big moment. Wait for the moment your name is called. Wait for death. Wait for salvation.
Wait for anything and everything.
After about twenty minutes, Mr. Washington's laptop got a notification. He picked it up and took a deep breath. "Everyone, your results are here."
He read the list. Jefferson noticed Maria tense up. Alex did the same in regards to Laf. "John Jay."
One of the guards at the door went and grabbed the skinny kid by his arms and barked, "Come with me."
Mr. Washington proceeded. "Thomas Conway."
Another guard grabbed his arms. "Don't touch me!" Conway snapped as he broke free. He stood up and left with the guard behind him. Then, the guard returned."
"Samuel Seabury."
A guard went to him as he, eyes filled with tears, stood up and gave in to the guard. "No," Charles practically yelled. His eyes were pouring and he was now shaking.
"John André."
Laf was getting more nervous by the second. Maria was about to faint.
"Andrew Jackson."
Peggy squeezed Eliza's hand, who returned the squeeze.
"Maria Lewis."
Maria looked at James. "You promised." He looked away. "You promised me." She said louder. The guard took her by the shoulders. "You promised! You promised me!" She kept yelling through tears until the door slammed shut.
Meanwhile, Peggy was trying her best to keep looking away. She was holding back tears and she couldn't even talk because she would start crying. Eliza gave her hand a squeeze, but Peggy pulled away, looking down to hide her face.
"Aaron Burr."
Theodosia looked at her boyfriend and pecked his lips before the guard ushered him away. She started sobbing to herself.
Mr. Washington, strong as he would seem, was trying not to shed tears himself when he said, "James Madison."
Jemmy looked at Thomas, who did the same. Tear tracks marked Thomas's cheeks as he mouthed, "No."
"It's okay." Jemmy mouthed back as he was taken away by a guard.
"Jonathan Laurens."
Alex held John's hand and squeezed it for comfort before he was taken away.
"And finally-" Mr. Washington abruptly paused. His eyes widened, and he shed a tear on his left eye. Voice cracking, he said, "Alexander Hamilton."
Everyone looked at Alexander, completely bewildered. Even Thomas was confused at the fact that Alex had failed the test. Alexander looked down as he felt the guard rip him from his chair.
"Congratulations, you passed. You can go to lunch."
Everyone left even the guards, when Lafayette turned around and went back in. "Dad," he called. "ID, please. Alex couldn't have failed."
Mr. Washington hesitated, but nodded and put his ID in his son's pocket. It was no bigger than a penny, but it contained a smaller version of Mr. Washington's fingerprint on it. Lafayette hesitantly put the ID in his mouth and using his tongue, he moved it to the side of his mouth so he could still speak with ease. He left the room and looked for the line of students walking to the purification room. "Wait!" He called out.
The line halted and the guards looked at him. "Can I at least say a few last words to my boyfriend?"
Normally, this wasn't allowed, but he was the son of a teacher, which gave him some authority. The guard asked, "Who is it?"
"That boy." He pointed to Alex.
"You. Come here." Alex stepped forward and the guard said, "You have two minutes."
Lafayette winked at Alexander before beginning. "Sweetie, I'll miss you. Please, you have to be strong. Do it for me." Lafayette pulled Alex into a deep kiss.
Alex, still baffled, closed his eyes just to go with it. He felt Laf's tongue asking for an entrance. Knowing that Laf was up to something, he gasped on purpose. He felt Laf's tongue explore his mouth when he felt something cold on the side of his mouth. Lafayette pulled away and approached Alex's ear. "It's my dad's ID. Get the hell out of here, and don't forget John and Maria. Do it for Peggy." He said. He winked again and pecked his lips before looking over at the guard and said, "Okay."
The guard yanked Alexander back into the line as Lafayette disappeared, heading towards the cafeteria.
