Surviving Number 8. Part 2.
Taehyung went into his room and curled up on his bed. He saw that Jungkook was fast asleep and didn't want to wake him, so he buried his face into his pillow and tried to cry as quietly as he could.
His heart felt heavy. Nobody had ever implied to him that he needed to lose weight. He'd thought about working out every now and then but then he'd always remember what his grandma used to tell him.
"Always keep a little weight on you so your poor grandmother here doesn't get worried."
His grandma had since passed away and his heart was hurting. He felt confused.
I don't want you to worry, grandma.
At the same time he wondered if maybe it was time for him to cut back. How could a stranger come into his own home and insinuate he's fat? Taehyung figured it must have been the truth. Why else would Ky have said it?
He was also hurting with anxiety. He didn't expect Ky to snatch his ice cream and throw it out. He definitely didn't expect Ky to pinch him. Especially not right there in front of Yoongi. Taehyung felt violated. Ky had been too aggressive. He also felt a bit embarrassed. It never felt good being talked down to, especially with your hyung there to witness it.
He had no right doing that.
He was wondering what Yoongi thought about the situation. Is Yoongi upset? Has he already let it go?
Taehyung didn't realize he had started crying more loudly until he felt someone place their hand on his back.
"Hyung?" Jungkook asked, "Why are you crying? What's wrong?"
"I'm not crying," Taehyung lied. He didn't want his maknae to worry about him.
"You are too crying!" Jungkook said and scooted into Taehyung's bed next to him. "So what's wrong?"
Taehyung paused for a moment before speaking up. He realized there were never any secrets in the house anyway so he decided to express his feelings.
"Be honest with me, do you think I'm fat?" Taehyung asked.
Jungkook was shocked. "Fat?! Taehyungie no way! Of course not! Why would you even ask a question like that?! Are you insane?!"
Taehyung couldn't hold back his sniffling as he told Jungkook what Ky had said and done. Jungkook hugged his hyung tightly.
"He really did that to you? What a jerk! Don't listen to him! Remember what your grandma would always sa-"
"Yeah well my grandma is dead anyway!" Taehyung cried. He shifted in his bed and faced the opposite way. He'd worked himself up to the point of not wanting to talk anymore.
Jungkook couldn't believe the way Taehyung was speaking. He never talked like that.
"Tae..." Jungkook whispered and rubbed Taehyung's back. When Taehyung didn't reply he started speaking again. "I'm sorry hyung. I just don't want you to think poorly of yourself over what some random jerk had to say."
"He's not some random jerk anymore, Jungkook-ah. He's our hyung now." His own words made his chest hurt. He didn't want Ky as a hyung.
"Barely," Jungkook scoffed. He didn't think Ky had quite earned that honorific yet. And if he was going to treat people so badly he wouldn't dare to ever call Ky his hyung.
"What did Yoongi hyung do?" Jungkook asked.
"I don't know, I ran away."
"Oh."
"I just want to sleep now."
"Okay." Jungkook fell silent as he hugged Taehyung and closed his eyes to sleep. Taehyung fell asleep to the soft pattern of Jungkook's steady breathing.
Yoongi wasn't having an easy time either. He kept tossing and turning with anxiety. He was so restless that it had woken Jin up.
"You alright?" Jin asked groggily.
Yoongi furrowed his brows and sighed. "Hyung...I don't think this is really going to work."
"I'm sorry Yoongi. I'm trying to give you as much space as I can! We can order new beds first thing tomorrow!"
"I'm not talking about the bed!" Yoongi yelled. He immediately realized he was yelling and took a deep breath. "Sorry. I'm not talking about the bed," he repeated in a softer tone.
Jin sat up and turned the nightstand lamp on.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Jin asked, concerned. He could tell Yoongi was upset.
"Jin, he's not nice." The sorrow was evident in Yoongi's voice.
"Who? Ky? What do you mean he's not nice? What happened?" Jin felt a rush of anxiety course through his chest. "Did he say something mean to you?"
"Not to me but to Taehyung." Yoongi told Jin what happened and Jin was furious.
"Oh no," Jin whispered. This was definitely not good. He sighed. "I'll talk to Ky tomorrow."
"Yeah well, good luck. He's an ass." Yoongi scoffed and curled up under his sheets. He just wanted the darkness of sleep to take him, even if only for a little while.
Jin sat awake for a moment thinking of what he wanted to say to Ky. He turned the lamp off and curled back up in bed. He could only hope that tomorrow he'd be able to do some damage control.
The members woke up one by one quite late in the morning. Hobi and Jimin were the first in the kitchen. They were browsing around looking for stuff they could make for breakfast for their members. Soon Namjoon, Jin, and Jungkook joined them in the kitchen.
"Should we go get Taehyung and Yoongi?" Hobi asked.
"Let them sleep a bit longer," Jin replied. Jungkook gave his hyung a sorrowful look. They communicated with their eyes and knew that the other already knew what happened.
"Are they okay?" Jimin asked, confused. Jungkook didn't waste a second to tell the rest of them what Ky had done and how upset Taehyung was. Jin added that Yoongi had also been pretty frustrated.
"Oh dear..." Namjoon sighed.
"I am going to talk to Ky about it. Please don't worry," Jin told them all reassuringly.
They all helped get breakfast ready and in the meantime Ky had walked into the kitchen. The members silently watched him, they didn't really know what to say.
"Can I talk to you?" Jin asked Ky.
"Okay," Ky replied.
"Erm...in your room?" Jin asked hesitantly.
"Okay...?" Ky asked with confusion. They both went into Ky's room.
"What's this about?" Ky spat.
"It's about last night with Taehyung..."
"Well what would you like to say?" Ky was being a bit standoffish and it was making Jin nervous. He was used to having very heartfelt conversations with his members when there was a conflict but what if that didn't work with Ky?
"Well uh...I think you should apologize to him. What you said was mean. If we are going to be a family we have to treat each other like a family."
"I will not apologize for speaking my mind. If he wants to act all offended and upset, that's his own problem," Ky replied with no emotion.
Jin felt anger boiling up in his chest. "Do you have any siblings?" he asked.
"No. Nor have I ever wanted any," Ky replied.
"Well these are my dongsaengs. I've been taking care of them for years and I really don't appreciate someone new coming into this house and treating them badly. You have no right!" Jin realized his voice was getting a bit louder as his temper picked up.
"These aren't your dongsaengs anymore. They're mine now. You're all mine now."
"Just because you're the oldest doesn't mean they aren't mine! They will always be mine!" Jin felt tears sting his eyes. He was getting nowhere. Not only that but he was very possessive of his six. They would always be his.
Ky suddenly grabbed Jin's upper arm and started squeezing it harshly. "I will not tolerate disrespect from any of you. Do you understand me?"
Jin tried backing out of Ky's grip. "Ow! Let go! That hurts!"
"I said do you understand me?" Ky gripped Jin harder.
Jin didn't want to agree with Ky. Not at all. If anything he wanted to spit in Ky's face but he knew when to leave well enough alone.
"Okay, okay, okay," Jin cried. "All I'm asking is that you be nicer. And if you have a problem with someone then maybe come to me first?" Jin figured that could be a good solution. Jin was already used to dealing with whatever the younger members might throw his way. He'd rather Ky talk to him first rather than ever try to handle them himself.
"Now please let go. You're hurting me," Jin whimpered.
Ky let him go and gave him a small shove. "Don't tell me how to run this household. Now if you'll excuse me, it smells like breakfast is ready."
Ky shoved past Jin and left the room. Jin stood there rubbing his sore arm and trying to quickly suck back in the tears that had escaped. He knew this talk didn't go as planned, but he didn't realize it could have actually gone even worse than planned. He worried what this meant for his dongsaengs. Clearly Ky could easily get angry. He didn't have the kind of patience needed to be in this group and it scared the hell out of Jin. He didn't know what else to do besides be more alert and be there for his little brothers when they needed him.
I tried.
When Jin made his way out of the room his maknae had just come looking for him.
"Oh there you are. How'd the talk go?" Jungkook asked with hope in his eyes.
"Not too great, honestly," Jin shrugged.
"Maybe I could try talking to him?"
"No!" Jin yelled. "Absolutely not!" The words out of Jungkook's mouth made Jin's heart feel dreadful. If he isn't going to listen to me he sure as hell won't listen to Jungkook. He also didn't want Jungkook to get hurt. He could still feel his burning arm and couldn't help but wonder if Ky would ever hurt someone else. He'd already had the nerve to pinch Taehyung.
"Why not? I just want to try and help."
"I know bunny, but please just let hyung deal with this one, okay?" Jin patted Jungkook on the shoulder and gestured for them to head to the kitchen. He was surprised to see Taehyung and Yoongi already awake. They were helping set the table. Jin went around and hugged the two.
The members gathered around the table and ate. They talked freely. Jimin and Namjoon both noticed that Taehyung wasn't actually putting any food in his mouth. He was just moving it around his plate and mushing it up with his fork.
Jimin nudged him and gestured to the plate, "Please eat, even just a tiny bit?" Jimin begged. He was extremely worried for Taehyung. He knew the younger took some things way too personally. He'd always been sensitive. Jimin just wanted his best friend to be okay. He felt hostile towards Ky. Although that feeling started to grow in his chest the moment Ky had spoken unkindly about his beloved fish.
"If he doesn't want to eat, you can't force him to eat," Ky said.
"The only reason he's not eating is because of you," Namjoon said harshly.
"Namjoon-ah." Jin gave Namjoon a warning look and Namjoon backed off. The leader knew Jin didn't like that kind of confrontation.
Taehyung sat there staring down at his plate. He was feeling anxious again. He didn't like the attention. He took deep breaths to try and slow his racing heart.
Ky spoke up again. "Well then I guess I did you all a favor, huh? We can save a lot more money by having one less mouth to feed."
Hobi's jaw dropped in utter disbelief over Ky's words. He wasn't the only one either. All of the members were speechless.
Taehyung couldn't take it anymore. He shot up from his chair and started to run outside but Jimin grabbed him. "Hey Taehyungie wait.." Taehyung shrugged him off and ran out the door.
Jimin turned to Ky with tears of frustration streaming down his face. "What the hell is wrong with you?! What's your problem?! Why can't you just leave him the hell alone?! He has done nothing to you!" he screamed. He turned and ran out the door too, chasing after Taehyung.
The members all looked around at each other, still speechless. None of them knew what to do or say.
To everyone's surprise, Hobi was the first to speak up. "Have we done something wrong? Have we offended you somehow? Why are you being so damn rude?"
Ky stood up and walked towards Hobi.
Jin also stood up. "Ky don't." He felt himself starting to sweat. What does Ky want with Hobi?
Ky picked up Hobi's glass of water and dumped it all over him. He then picked up Hobi's plate of food and smashed it on the floor. Hobi stared at him wide eyed. It was obvious he had become frightened.
"What the hell!" Namjoon screamed at Ky.
Jungkook angrily stood up. "Fuck off Ky! Leave my hyungs alone!" It wasn't like Jungkook to ever act or say things like that but he couldn't take it anymore. He'd had enough of Ky hurting his hyungs. He wanted to be a good maknae, a protective maknae. Just like his hyungs were always protecting him, he always wanted to return the favor.
Ky pointed to the space next to him. "Jeon Jungkook. Get over here. Now."
Jungkook gulped and looked pleadingly at his hyungs. He didn't know what to do. He didn't want to be anywhere within arms reach of Ky.
Yoongi grabbed Jungkook's arm protectively. "No."
"Excuse me?" Ky asked angrily.
"You're not going to do anything to Jungkook. Ever," Yoongi spat back. "Why don't you just kindly fuck off?"
Jin felt like he was going to throw up all over the kitchen table. His stomach was doing cartwheels. How had all of this happened, and so quickly?
"Let's all just...take a breath..." Jin pleaded. He wanted to get the situation under control before it got worse.
Ky turned to Jin. "A fantastic job you've done raising these guys, Jin. I see that I'm going to have to teach them some damn respect, something you've failed to do."
"Respect is due where it has been earned!" Namjoon yelled.
"Joonie! Enough!" Jin screamed. He realized he really wished they'd all known when to just shut up.
"You know what? I don't need this right now," Ky spat and grabbed his car keys and disappeared out the door. Nobody said a word as they heard him get in his car and drive away.
The members looked around at each other. All of them were fighting back tears. They looked around at the mess that Ky had made that they'd been left to clean up.
And not just the physical mess.
