Chapter twelve

"Confession time," Hercules said as we sat around the burnt out campfire in the morning.

"Confession time?" I asked.

"Its where you confess something because you're going to die and it would be better just to get it off your chest," John explained, he was still pink from last night.

I looked at our team. Lafayette lay on the ground, he had woken up at some point during the night, but he was unable to move. He just lay there, staring at us with his eyes open and once in a while laughing quietly at a joke. Arnold was very suspicious. He kept sending this evil glances at me. I kept a knife in my pocket at all times now.

Hercules stopped crying when Lafayette woke up. John was adorabl- Nope. John was a very nice friend to have. When I woke up last night on his shoulder, I had expected him to slap me or something, but he gave me a beautiful smile, and let me rest there for a bit longer.

"Well, Confession time here's what I got, my fellow tributes will tell you I'm a terrible shot," Arnold said.

"Something more juicy. We all know you are terrible with long ranged things," Hercules said.

"I don't like Hamilton much," Arnold muttered.

"Why?" John asked immediately. "Hes like, nice, smart, brave, a natural leader, amazing, good with a spear, can make food, start fires, hes got great hair, hes ado-" John cut himself off and blushed. "I-I mean hes just a really great guy."

I looked up at his pink face, and tried not to blush to much myself. I smiled slightly, John thought I was adorable! Butterflies flew around in my chest.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Hercules shouted, standing up to his feet.

"WHAT?" Arnold shouted, grabbing onto a sword.

"ALEXANDER SMILED! EEEE!" Hercules shouted and I heard Lafayette laugh.

John examined my face. I tried not to smile, but I ended up with a little smirk on my face.

"OH MY HEDGEHOGS!" John smiled widely.

"What is he smiling about though?" Hercules asked suspiciously.

I looked away from them, still trying to hide my smile away.

"Don't let him hide his smile!" Hercules shouted.

John leapt over to me and grabbed my mouth, pulling up the sides so it looked like I was smiling still. I playfully swatted my hands at him, he jumped away and laughed, I smiled even more.

"I wish we had a camera," Hercules complained.

We continued to rough-house together, playing around like normal teenage boys for a couple minutes. That's when I felt a sudden strong gust of wind. I stopped trying to pick up Lafayette and throw him at Hercules. I stared out at the water through the tree trunks. Then I looked up at the sky.

It was yellow.

My eyes stretched wide and I ran over to John. Already a tear fell down my cheek at the memory of the hurricane.

"Whats wrong?" He asked in a worried voice.

I pointed up at the yellow sky. Hercules seemed to know what that meant, and went over to pick up Lafayette in a single swift motion. Arnold stood up too, and all five of us quickly went over towards a large rock near the pond we where camping at. Hercules set down Lafayette at the base of the rock. Hopefully the rock would block some wind, and other things, from hitting us.

It would be ideal to have a cave, but there was no time to run all the way up the mountain. I huddled at the base of the rock, more tears streamed down my face as I squeezed Johns hand. Why did they have to send a hurricane? Did they know it was my weakness? Did the game makers want me to seem weak in front of my friend and John?

A couple more strong gusts of wind pushed past us, I could see a tree falling down already. It only made me squeeze Johns hand tighter.

"Ow," John said. "Alex, my hand is purple."

I looked down and realized he was right, I was squeezing Johns hand so hard his fingers where turning purple. I loosened my grip. There wasn't even rain yet, why am I so freaked out? And sense when did he start calling me 'Alex'? Its kind of cute. Not the time to think about this! I scolded myself.

Me and the team sat quietly next to the rock as he wind blew above our heads. A couple rain drops began to fall through the thick canopy of pine needles, and I flinched closer to John. Arnold was sitting calmly near the rock, a sword in his hand. He stared at the sky, un-afraid. Hercules sat on the ground, Lafayette's un-moving body was laid carefully across his lap.

The rain began to fall more thickly, and so did my tears. The memories of the devastation flashed through my mind. James smashed by a palm tree. People screaming on the beach. Dead bodies floating down the streets. The ceiling caving in on us. I shuddered, and moved even closer to John.

I suddenly felt something wrap around me, and I looked away from the sky at John. He was hugging me comfortingly, and he rested his chin on top of my head.

"Its okay," He whispered. "Shh, its alright."

My first thought was about how I don't need someone to treat me like a baby. But then I realized he was helping me calm down, for the first time in years, I was calm during the storm. I closed my eyes and flinched as thunder boomed, and a tree fell down beside us. My tears stopped coming as I was comforted by John.

"Its going to be fine," John whispered, his chin still resting on the top of my head and his arms still wrapped around me.

I nuzzled my face into his scarf, and hugged my legs closer to my chest as he hugged me.

"You're okay," He whispered.

I squeezed my eyes shut and pretended nothing else was here, just me and John, together. But the boom of a canon interrupted the image in my head. I looked around. Hercules still had Lafayette on his lap, Lafayette looked like he was still breathing. John was fine. And Arnold was still sitting calmly alone. I closed my eyes again.

Then, over the pounding of the rain, thunder, and trees falling, I heard faint voices. I moved my head away from John and looked through the woods on high alert. John stopped hugging me and looked around to. I really wish he could still hug me, and we could sit like that forever. Pay attention! I thought to myself.

I heard footsteps nearby.

"Oh, look," Said a male voice.

"Someones old camp," a voice grunted, barely audible over the storm.

"We have to get out of here," Hercules whispered to us.

"No, we hide here, if we run they'll hear us," Arnold reasoned.

I glared at him suspiciously. he was planning something. I was going to say something, but thunder boomed overhead and I hugged my legs, moving back closer to the rock.

"Alright, lets stay," Hercules said.

"We cant risk it though. If we stay and they find us, we would be done for," John said.

"Leave me here," Lafayette said, I could not make out whatever he said next.

"No!" Hercules said. "He wants us to leave him here, and he can distract them while we escape."

"I'm dying anyway," Lafayette protested.

There was silence for a moment. Nobody could say he wouldn't die. Everyone would die eventually, and especially someone as injured as him.

"No," Hercules finally said as the thunder boomed.

Lafayette looked into Hercules's eyes, and then started to drag himself towards the voices. He used his arms to pull himself over the ground, his legs dragging through the pine needles and mud. Hercules grabbed him and stopped him from moving.

"OVER HERE!" Lafayette shouted at the top of his lungs.

My eyes grew wide as I huddled by the rock.

"OVER HERE!" Lafayette repeated. "Leave me, or you'll be taken to."

"Wh-Why would you do this?" Hercules asked, tears rolling down his face.

"BEHIND THE ROCK!" Lafayette shouted through tears, then he added more quietly, "Get out of here!"

I felt John pull me up too my feet. The voices and footsteps grew louder. It sounded as if there where at least five people. I couldn't make my feet move, though, the storm was still getting into my brain. John pulled me roughly away from the voices and footsteps.

"HERE!" Lafayette shouted again.

John pulled me away towards Hercules, where John grabbed him and pulled us both away. Hercules cried, but he followed us. As me, John, Hercules and Arnold quickly walked away, I saw Lafayette staring into Hercules's eyes, tears rolling down his face. Just before John pulled me out of view, I saw the two surviving Schuyler sisters and what was rest of Jefferson's team walk around the rock, and spot Lafayette's body on the ground.

Hercules cried oceans as we ran away through the woods. I tripped on a tree root and John helped me up. I looked into his eyes. I could tell he was crying even though we where all drenched in rain and mud. Thunder boomed and I struggled to move my feet.

Then a canon echoed across the forest.

Who lives, who dies, who tells your story. I'M SORRY!
