Chapter seventeen

My eyes widened as I watched John hurl himself on top of Jefferson. Tears rolled down my cheeks. Hes going to die. Hes going to die. I thought. John impaled Jefferson in the back and took off running into the woods, the rest of the team chased him while Jefferson bled on the ground. I saw Hercules sneak into the cave.

"Come on," he said, cutting through the ropes.

"B-but John," I cried.

"He'll be fine. We have a plan," Hercules said, and before he helped me stand up, he rummaged through Jefferson's stuff.

He found a huge metal thing, and I realized it was a remote control bomb.

"What i-if you accidentally blow up John?" I asked him.

"Stop worrying about him," Hercules said, he hid the bomb in the middle of the cave, under some ashed of a fire.

Then he turned around and helped me stand up. I almost fell on my wobbly feet, and pain erupted from my side. Hercules grabbed the remote control.

"I'm guessing you cant run?" Hercules said.

He was right, in my condition running would almost seem impossible. Hercules stuffed the remote control in his pocket, then I wrapped my arm around his shoulder and he helped bring me out of the cave. We stepped over Jefferson's bleeding body. He wasn't dead yet, but he was probably going to be soon.

We slowly moved away from the cave, and the further away we moved the louder screams echoed through the trees. Please don't die John. You cant die saving me. If you die saving me I'll kill you. I thought as tears still ran fresh down my cheeks. It was all to easy to imagine him getting stuck in one of my traps, or somewhere else, and getting stabbed.

Hercules brought me over towards our cave, it was a long walk, and I almost fell to many times to count. The screams and yells had become more quiet. Either they ran really far away, or John just died. I couldn't get myself to stop crying. I guess this is what relationships get me, sadness and pain in the end.

"You stay here," Hercules said, helping me sit on the stone floor.

"No! I need to help I got us into this mess-"

"Nope, Jefferson got us into this mess. Actually, never mind, the Capitol got us into this mess. Then it was President Snow, and then you could blame it on all of Panem if you like. But its not your fault, Now you are helping me by staying put. If you died, it would only cause pain for John. now be a good little hedgehog and stay," Hercules said, and walked out of the cave.

I curled into a ball, blood still came out of my nose and my side hurt more then I ever hurt before. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I imagined Jefferson's team catching up with John. I laid on the stone floor for a while, images flashing through my mind, then I heard a loud boom.

And then came two canon booms.

My eyes stretched wide. He cant die! I don't know what I'd do if he dies before me. Then I head footsteps coming through the woods. I tried to drag myself towards the back of the cave to hide myself better, but my broken body hurt to much.

"Alex?" Came the worried voice of John, I could tell he was crying by his wavy voice.

I tried to shout back to him but my vocal cords didn't seem to be working.

"ALEX!?" John shouted, his voice got louder as he came closer.

The only noise I could make was a quiet whisper now, its like my body just decided to give up.

"Alex please don't be dead I'll freaking kill you if you die before me," John said, echoing exactly what I had thought earlier.

Then John entered the cave and he gasped. He sat down next to me and hugged me tightly.

"Ow," I said in a hoarse voice, barely over a whisper.

"Sorry," John said, loosening his grip.

I pushed myself up to a sitting position, my sides aching from pain. I then leaned towards him and touched my forehead to his.

"I'm so glad you're okay," I whispered.

"I love you," He cried quietly.

We sat there, touching foreheads for a moment. The sun was up high in the sky, it was probably noon. Suddenly I heard a beeping noise and I moved away from John, looking outside our cave.

"I'll check it out, stay here, Love," John said, standing up.

He called me love. That's way to adorable. I thought, butterflies in my stomach. I waited for John to come back. I hurt so much I couldn't quite lay back down on my side, so I just sat up, cross-legged. I flinched at the pain, something inside me had definitely been broken. I saw John come back into the cave with a small silver capsule attached to a parachute.

"The capitol sent us something," John said, a smile appearing on his face.

He opened it up, and inside the little shiny container it was divided by a shiny wall into two parts. One side had a light pea green cream in it, and the other had a yellow cream. A note also came with it, and John read it out loud to me.

"Apply the green cream to bruises and scratched to ease pain and they will go away. Apply yellow cream to broken bones," He read.

"How am I supposed to put cream on my bones?" I asked, confused.

"I don't know, but at least we got something," John said, and plopped down inches away from me. "Oh wait there's another note."

John found a small piece of paper, and opened it up.

"It just says 'You two are cute, keep it up, the audience adores you. -Haymitch.' Okay who the hedgehogs is Haymitch?" John said, trying to control his blushing.

"My mentor," I said in my scratchy voice, I tried to hide my blushing by a quiet laughter.

"Well I don't know what he means by 'Keep it up', does he want us to go through the full classic life of a relationship? Propose, get married, have a child?" John asked.

"All those sound nice," I said, blushing.

"Yes, lets have a child together. That is totally possible. Maybe we'll adopt a cat," John said, rolling his eyes.

"I wouldn't mind, though, If I could get some of that medicine meant for me," I said. "I'm kind of in pain over here."

"Right, sorry," John said.

He scooted up closer to me.

"Take your shirt off so we can get started," John said, he obviously seemed a bit uncomfortable.

"That's going a bit to fast, man," I said jokingly.

"If we are to get married and have children before we both die in this arena then this is actually moving to slow," John pointed out. "Mathematically."

I sighed and took my shirt off.

"Oh my god Alex you have so many bruises you are a literal grape. We might need more medicine," John said.

"Well, at least I'm not constantly a tomato like you when you are close to me," I said.

"Well I cant help blushing when I'm close to the most handsome person in the world," John said, blushing.

John moved his face closer to mine.

"Sniff sniff, Hmmmmm I smell something... sniff, ah, Love in the air. Hows your make out session going?" Hercules said, coming into the cave, a smirk on his face. "Or am I interrupting something?"

"Shut up, Herc," John said, a bright shade of pink covering his entire face.

"Glad you're alive," I said.

"Now please get a room," Hercules said.

"This is the room," John snorted, and then he dipped a finger into the green cream.

"You two are cute, keep it up, the audience adores you," Hercules read off a little paper he picked up. "Guess I'm the only one who doesn't want to watch you guys make out."

"Oh my god Hercules go jump into a pit or something," I said, I don't think anyone could blush harder then I currently was.

"You're telling the person who just exploded Jefferson's cave and killed off both the girls in there to go away," Hercules said.

Then a canon echoed through the arena.

"Add Jefferson to that," Hercules added.

"Okay, you cant take the credit for Jefferson's death, John did all that. Hes the one who risked his life for me," I said.

"Someone appreciates me," John mumbled.

"I'll always appreciate you, Love," I said to him.

"Ew, mushy stuff, I'm out, cant wait to be the flower girl at your wedding though, and I call being the go-to babysitter!" Hercules said, walking out of the cave.

"Lets hope this stuff works," John said, changing the subject.

John bent his head down and began to apply the cream to some bruises on my face. As the cream touched my black eye, it immediately began to heal itself as insane speeds. The bruise disappeared, and a moment later so did the pain.

"That feels so good," I muttered.

"Excuse me what the he- oh, never mind, nothing," Hercules poked his head inside the cave.

"GO AWAY!" John yelled.

Hercules quickly ran away. I sighed as John continued to apply the cream to my face, and then to my chest, and my back. Soon I was putting my shirt back on and all the pain had dissolved away.

"Now lets figure out the broken bone cream," John said, moving away from me to dip his finger into the yellow cream. "Hopefully I don't have to apply this directly to your bone, I don't want to cut you open."

"I would trust you to cut me open then anyone else," I said.

"You put your trust in the wrong person," John laughed.

"Wait wait, not the bone cream yet, I need to do the green stuff on you," I said, my voice was now fully healed.

"I'm fine," John said, trying to keep the cream out of my reach.

"No you're not, you at least have some bruise from the avalanche," I said, struggling to grab the cream.

John laughed and stood up, holding the cream above his head.

"You cant take advantage of my shortness! That's illegal! I'll call the Peacekeepers on you!" I said, trying to reach the cream.

"Don't call the Peacekeepers, there all a bunch of turds," John said.

"Just-let me-" I said, trying to reach the cream.

I jumped up as high as I could and then fell into John. We both fell onto the stone floor, laughing. I rolled off of John, and then snatched the cream away from him.

"Hah!" I said, still laughter in my voice.

"I love your laugh. I wish I could hear it more often," John said, sitting back up on his knees.

"I'll laugh more if you want me too," I said. "But right now its time to be serious."

I sat close to him and he took his shirt off, I began to rub some of the cream on the little bruises he had. We stayed silent as I rubbed the cream on him.

"Can you sing?" John asked sudenly, interrupting the fragile silence.

 "Pfft, no," I said.

"But I want to hear you sing," John complained.

"I could sing one song for you, its a classic in our district," I suggested.

"Oooo yes!" John said, clapping his hands like an excited child.

"Are you, are you, coming to the tree. They strung up a man, they say who murdered three strange things did happen here no stranger would it be If we met at midnight In the hanging tree," I sang at the best of my ability, although I sounded like a toad.

"You have a great voice, but that's way to depressing, please stop," John said, laughing.

Then he put his shirt back on.

"Alright, done. Time to cut you open," John said.

"No you are NOT cutting me open," I said.

"How else are you going to get that broken rib healed?" John asked.

"I'll rub it on my side," I said.

"That wont work," John pointed out.

"Yes it will," I said, dipping a finger in the yellow cream, and reaching down to my side that hurt like heck.

"Nah," John said, shaking his head.

I rolled my eyes and applied the cream to my side, and it did help.

"Works," I said.

"No it doesn't," John said. "You cant rub cream on your side and expect it to go through your skin and onto your bone and then somehow magically heal it."

"Capitol people logic," I shrugged.

We sat in the cave in silence for a couple minutes. I moved close to John, and rested my head on his shoulder. He sat in silence for a bit longer, savoring the moment.

"So um- can I kiss you?" John broke the silence.
