Chapter nineteen
I stared out at the creature, sitting on Johns lap. He was really comfortable. That sounded strange, but it was true. Suddenly the creatures head turned to us. My eyes widened, and I jumped off his lap. For weapons we had brought two swords and a knife- Nothing I could use. John grabbed a sword and stood in front of me protectively.
I bent down and picked up the knife slowly, and Hercules grabbed the other sword. I stepped out at Johns side, and we formed a small line. The creature stared at us, and then it started swimming over.
"I love you, John Laurens," I said.
"I love you, Alexander Hamilton," John said, and grabbed my hand.
"I love you, Marquis de Lafayette," Hercules said, looking up at the sky.
The monster swam closer, and I squeezed Johns hand tightly, knowing we would probably all die. The monster roared as it got closer to us, and I felt John push me behind him.
"I don't need your protection," I said, pushing my way back to where I had been standing next to him.
"Alex," John gave me a stern look, although there where a couple tears welling up in his eyes. "You aren't going to die before me."
"We can take this thing," I said confidently.
John stared at me worriedly, and then looked back at the monster rushing at us.
"You two still have each other," Hercules said suddenly. "But I have nothing to live for."
Before I could ask what he meant, Hercules took a step back, sprinted as fast as he could, and jumped at the monster. Hercules slammed into the monsters face, and the monster roared as Hercules stabbed its forehead.
"RUN!" He shouted at us.
The monster flipped Hercules around, and he almost fell of the beast into the brown murky water.
"RUN!" He shouted again at us. "PLEASE! SURVIVE! IF YOU DON'T RUN ILL KILL YOU!"
John pulled me away. we climbed as fast as we could towards the top of the mountain. I heard a scream behind me and forced myself not to look as we reached almost the top of the mountain. Suddenly my handhold, a small rock, broke loose and I was hanging from one hand off a cliff.
Immediately I felt John grab my arm, and pull me up the rest of the way. Its like he's always watching me and knows when I'm in trouble. We reached a ledge up high on the mountain, and both huddled together in the cold. I dared to take a glance back at the monster and Hercules; the person who risked his life for us.
I turned around and gasped at the sight. The monster was beaten up, scratches all over its face. I caught a sight of Hercules, barely able to stand up on a floating log. The monster moved around for a moment, then let out a screech. Then the monster laid down in the water, and died.
I looked at Hercules's small body, standing on the log.
"HERCULES!" John shouted.
Hercules just stared ahead, and then he fell over into the water. I waited for him to come swimming back up, and towards the shore. My heart pounded as he didn't re-surface. Then I heard a canon echo through the mountains.
*~*
Me and John huddled together on the mountain side, John was still crying over Hercules. The water had started to drain now that the monster was gone, and the sun had risen. Soon the arena was completely drained out, the forest looked like a complete mess, trees littered the ground, dirt everywhere. everything green had died.
John stopped crying and we hugged each other for a moment.
"What now?" I asked him.
"One of us has to win," John said.
"Not me," I said.
"But it has to be you," John said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because, you have family to get to," John replied.
"And you don't?" I asked.
"I-" John said, but he didn't know what to say.
"Don't lie to me. You have some big happy family waiting for you," I said.
"But you wont be there," John said.
"Then we form a plan," I said.
"We cant both live," John pointed out.
"Sure we can," I said, ideas running through my mind. "We could follow Katniss's example."
"We aren't allowed to speak of her!" John gasped.
"She used berries and threatened the capitol," I said. "We could do something like that."
"But we know that the capitol would let us both die, its better then having two winners," John reasoned.
"But, we could try and break the barrier around the arena. Remember when the seventy fifth hunger games happened? And there was that huge technical problem that caused the barrier to break? That caused Katniss's death? I bet we could break it ourselves and escape," I said.
"There's no way," John said.
"That water had to come form somewhere- there has to be some kind of pipe that lets the water enter the arena, so the tsunami could be formed. We could swim out of it," I said.
"That- might work," John said, thinking. "But what about the cameras? and the capitol citizens watching?"
"It might take them a while to notice we are gone. We could get out, rob some capitol clothing, put it on, and then escape from there," I said.
John suddenly stood up, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. I smiled at his, and stood up too. We touched our foreheads together, and then set off down the mountain.
*~*
"Done!" I shouted.
"Done with my part!" John shouted.
"Right, get on," I said.
John jumped on top of the raft we had just made. I pushed the raft out towards the sea, and then jumped on it with him. I put the goggles I had made on my eyes. I had used some glass we stole from Jefferson's old camp, and then carved out a piece of wood so the glass would fit tightly. Then I used an elastic band I found on the beach to attach it to my head. Turns out it actually works underwater, for a minute before they start to fill with water.
"You look ridiculous," John laughed.
"Have fun saying that when you cant see because you're underwater," I replied.
"Any last words for the cameras?" John asked me.
"I don't know any funny things to say, not really a humorous person," I said, shrugging.
I grabbed a paddle and pushed it through the water so we moved faster. We had earlier been worried about the capitol using the trackers they had injected into our arms to find us, but I found a way to slice mine out using a knife. I did the same too John as well.
"Follow these steps very carefully; number one, think of the first word that appears in your head when you think of the capitol. Number two, think of the person you hate from the capitol. Number three, think of some completely un-related word to the topic. Number four, think of one word that describes the capitol citizens. Number five, take those four words, and make it into a funny sentence, meanwhile adding more funny words to it. Number six, shout it as loud as you can," John said.
"PRESIDENT SNOW YOU IDIOTIC WEASEL LOOKING BLOB FACED ELEPHANT!" I yelled.
"Not that bad," John laughed.
I snuggled up to him on our tiny raft, once in a while pushing with the paddles to keep us moving out into the water. We eventually reached the barrier of the arena. We could tell by throwing some rocks ahead of us, and then once the rocks hit something and bounced back, it meant it touched the edge of the arena.
"I wish Hercules and Lafayette where escaping with us," John mumbled.
"Me too," I said, and I squeezed his hand.
Once we got as far as we liked, I dove into the water. I looked around, I only had a minute before my goggles would fill up with water, so I tried to spend my time wisely. I spotted a strange machine- It had a huge open pipe where water could come in, and I also saw the thing they use in wave pools at fancy capitol water parks.
I resurfaced back up to speak with John.
"Its big enough, I think," I said, after explaining what I saw.
"Perfect!" He said happily.
"But Its also possible the game makers might flush us back into the arena with water," I said.
"They probably are freaking out because they cant film us right now. The only possible way for them to be filming us is if they have a drone, and I don't see any. So I don't even think they know we are here," John said.
"I feel like they are smarter then that," I pointed out from the water.
"They also might let us escape, to show all of Panem that they aren't super mean. It would show that they let the cute couple live, and maybe all of Panem would feel like the capitol isn't that bad. Even though they murder twenty three kids every year," John reasoned.
"Alright then, lets go," I said.
John jumped off the raft and into the water. I grabbed his hand and guided him down towards the pipe. I pushed him into it, and then followed behind him. It was pitch black inside, so I closed my eyes. He swam on for a while, I was starting to run out of breath by now. The realization that we could die in a capitol water pipe made me feel terrible.
'Died by drowning in a pipe' Did not sound like the ideal way people remembered someone.
I relied on my hearing, listening to where John was ahead of me. Suddenly the quiet whooshing noise John made when his feet paddled onward stopped. I stopped moving. Did something grab him? I thought. My breath started to run out quicker as I worried about him. Suddenly I was out of air.
I flailed my arms around for a bit, and felt something grab me. I tried to struggle away from whatever it was, but I soon gave up. My eyes started to close as I lost all my breath.
*~*
I squinted open my eyes and caught the sight of light above me. I swam upward, and emerged from the water, taking a deep breath. I looked around for Alex, but he didn't surface. After I caught my breath, I stuck my head under the water, trying to hold my eyes open. I saw a blurry shape and reached out to grab him.
Alex tried to get away from me, but he seemed weak and exhausted. He suddenly stopped struggling, so I pulled him up to the surface. But his eyes where closed, and he wasn't breathing. I pulled him to shore and lay him on his back.
We where in some kind of underground channel. It looked like a sewer, but the water looked more clean and fresh, like it came directly form the ocean. Above our heads was a gray stone ceiling that I could not even stand up in, because it was so small. We where on a slim path that went all the way down the sewer thing, just enough room for Alex to lay down on his back.
I stood over him, and put my hands on his chest, and began pounding to the rhythm of CPR. I then bent down over his head, plugged his nose, and breathed into his mouth. Then I went back to his chest. Tears streaked down my cheeks. He wasn't supposed to die before me! Please don't die, its all my fault. I thought.
After a minute, though, Alex took a deep breath and some water came our of his throat.
I wrapped my arms around him tightly. A couple tears falling from my eyes.
"Did I just die?" Alex asked me.
"No time for messing around, we have to go," I said, letting go of him.
"Can't we just-" Alex said, but was interrupted by a fit of coughing.
"You okay?" I asked him nervously.
"Yeah," Alex said.
"Alright, come on," I said, if we stayed here too long, someone would find us.
I grabbed his hand and stood up, ducking my head so I could fit. Alex was short enough, though, an inch shorter then the roof. I pulled him behind me, and we ran quickly down the strange path.
The tunnel turned to the left, then kept going. The tunnel got darker, until I could barely see. We slowed down our pace to save energy. By now the capitol would know for sure that we escaped. I feared we would never emerge out of the tunnel, and if we did emerge out of the tunnel, we might end up in some huge busy capitol street.
Images of Lafayette and Hercules kept flashing before my eyes as we went on down the tunnel. I would always remember them, the heroes who risked their lives for us. If we made it out, I would help Alex carve a huge monument for them wherever we decide to go.
Suddenly ahead of me I spotted something white. I slowed down, and Alex did the same. I realized the white thing was actually a light.
Alex looked up at me I could see the hope shimmering in his eyes. I turned to face him and bent down towards his face.
"I love you," I said.
"I love you too," Alex said.
We touched foreheads briefly, although that little bit of affection meant the world to me. Alexander meant the world to me. I squeezed his hand tightly, then we both faced ahead. I gave him one last loving glance, and then we set off together towards the light.
(A/N News on possible sequel. 'Live Together' is a book I might start writing. Maybe. Possibly. If you've been to my profile page, you might notice how many other lams I'm currently working on. A harry potter one, another one, oh and another one.... and that other one... and a possible wings of fire one... So if i do make a sequel, it wont be for a LONG time. Maybe even a year from now! Please don't yell at me about it :)
