Chapter nine
I stood in a clear tube. I was wearing a winter jacket, although it was definitely not the highest quality, some kind of thick pants, and a scarf. The game makers decide what we wear when we enter the games, It was a rule added only a couple years ago.
The floor below my feet started to rise up, it was like a little disk. I felt a bit of sunlight on my face as I rose up above ground. As the disk reached the top, I could see the other tributes on their own disks. The disks where silver, slightly elevated above the rocky ground. Around us was a mountain range, although there was a patch of spruce forest further down the mountain from our current position.
In the middle of the circle of tributes, there was the cornucopia. The shiny silver structure was filled in the cave-like opening with supplies. I spotted some swords, bread, backpacks, sleeping bags, apples. All things that would be a life saver.
I looked around and spotted Lafayette. He was staring at me, and once he noticed he got my attention he made a signal to me. The signal meant to run away. I nodded at him. It meant we where to run away from the cornucopia, probably because the Schuyler sisters and the other team of Careers would be headed for the supplies.
That was called the bloodbath.
Lots of the tributes died in the initial bloodbath. All tributes who ran towards the supplies would always face fighting, and would probably die unless they where very skilled or had a huge team to back them up. It seemed like my team had planned on running up the mountain. I spotted a backpack just beside my disk. I would be able to grab it then run.
The ominous countdown began. I looked around the circle of tributes. Most of them where in the position to run forward and snatch what they could. I took a deep breath as the countdown reached ten, then it continued counting down at a fast pace.
"Nine, eight, seven, six, five," The monotone voice said.
The tributes got ready to sprint as fast as they could for the weapons. I prepared to grab the backpack and run. My scarf and hair kept blowing in front of my face and I angrily pushed them away. I actually kind of wished for a hair tie, It was something I discovered when in the capitol. It would have made wonders back in twelve.
"Four, Three."
I saw Arnold, Julie, Mulligan and Shippen face the opposite way, ready to run up the mountain. What confused me was Lafayette, who looked like he was about to run at the cornucopia. I noticed Benedict Arnold see this to. He turned around and faced the cornucopia.
"Two, One."
The tributes ran as fast as they could in the direction they wanted to go. I quickly looked to see where Laurens was at, then grabbed the backpack and sprinted with him away up the mountain. I glanced over my shoulder.
There was already a dead body laying in a puddle of blood. I watched a strange brutally break someones neck in a quick motion. Arnold grabbed a couple things then ran as fast as a person with a wounded leg could. Lafayette ran straight for the swords.
I heard screams as a couple tributes I had never met started a brutal fight. I spotted Lafayette walking slowly up at John Adams, a sword raised above his head. Adams was sitting in front of a huge backpack.
"Alexander!" Laurens shouted.
I looked over towards the shout and saw him standing on a rock. He was looking out at the tributes, probably trying to spot me. I didn't even know why he cared.
"Here!" I shouted.
He saw me and nodded. I sprinted up to him, and then we sprinted the rest of the way together. We reached a cave a little ways up the mountain. The rest of the tributes where either at the cornucopia, or had fled towards the spruce forest.
From up high, I could spot Arnold making his way up to us, Mulligan was almost at our cave, Lafayette was just emerging from the cornucopia with a huge bag of supplies and Adams backpack while some other people fought. I saw Shippen walking with Arnold like it was a lovely summer evening back in their district even though it was probably fifty degrees and there was death just around the corner.
I looked around, but couldn't spot Julie. I felt a little pang in my heart. She was such an innocent girl, it would be sad if she wounded up dead. But this is why I purposefully avoided getting connected to people, I did not feel as sad as I should for the probable death of my fellow tribute.
I turned towards the cave. I wandered inside slowly, hoping there where no wild animals inside. It turned out to be a small indent in the mountain, but it was enough shelter for everyone. I shivered and sat down on the cold stone, and opened up the backpack. Inside was a flashlight and an umbrella. I threw the items out and looked through the entire backpack for anything actually useful.
The only other thing I found was a small container labelled 'Poison' on it, but it was such a small amount. And it was already frozen. I stuffed the poison away, and the umbrella. Although I put the small flashlight in my winter jackets pocket.
"Everyone is here," Laurens said, joining me in the cave. He looked like an icicle, even though it was probably only forty-five degrees. I go out in this weather with just a thin autumn jacket.
"I'll need to gather some fire wood," I said.
"Its to dangerous. Laf said the Schuyler sisters went for the woods. If they make it their territory, the only ones who could actually manage to kick them out is the Jefferson, Lucia, John Adams, Pete, Rosemary, John Jay, Charles and Maria team," Laurens reasoned.
"Sounds like a good team," I commented.
"Its pretty much all the people in high ranking districts that aren't in our group, with the exception of Charles," Laurens said. "Although, Lafayette claims he took care of John Adams for us."
He sat next to me on the stone floor.
"Alright, alright! That's what I'm talking about!" I heard Mulligan laugh.
"Lets give it up, for the maid of honor, our dinner!" Lafayette shouted.
Outside the cave I could see that Lafayette had found an entire three foot baguette. He also reached into a bag and took out an entire chicken, feathers and all. Probably something I was going to have to prepare for everyone. I was not looking forward to that.
I watched Arnold and Shippen come into the cave and huddle together near the back wall. Throughout the rest of the miserable day, Julie never came up to the cave. Everyone was now sitting together in the cave, sitting close together for warmth. The temperature dropped at least ten to twenty degrees over the time. I seriously needed to get us some firewood.
I stood up suddenly. Laurens, who had been leaning on me, fell over onto the floor.
"What was that for?" He complained.
"I need to get firewood or we'll all die here," I explained.
"I-Its to dangerous," Arnold said, shivering next to Shippen.
"Its getting colder by the minute!" I reasoned. "And we should probably stock up on firewood before we move further up the mountain."
"w-we're m-moving further u-u-up the m-mountain?" Shippen shivered, and Arnold hugged her closer for warmth.
"You think we're going to stay here? The other tributes could easily find us and corner us in here," I said.
"This is why we hired this guy. Hes pretty smart," Mulligan said.
"I'm still getting over the fact that's hes talking to us. Hes totally warming up to us," Lafayette smirked.
"Warming up. that sounds nice," Shippen said.
I turned around and marched outside the cave without another word.
I looked around for trees that weren't in the spruce forest. Further up the mountain was snow, and way down the mountain in the spruce forest there was green plants. I bet they where having fun in the nice warm heat down there. I spotted a tree nearby, a nicely sized one.
I started walking towards it, and realized Laurens was following me. A moment later Mulligan caught up to us with an axe. I led the way over towards the tree. Mulligan chopped a couple of the smaller branches off, and soon we had enough wood. Spruce trees where certainly nice, with their close-to-the-ground branches and the weak easily-breakable wood.
We all carried huge amounts of wood back up towards the cave.
"Nice!" I heard Lafayette comment as i dumped off my load on the floor.
"I'll start on the entrance of the cave," Laurens said, and Shippen went to help set a couple sticks in the entrance.
I began to build a small campfire in the middle of the cave. I new this was dangerous, though. The smoke of the fire could easily get trapped inside the cave and we would have no air to breathe. That's why Arnold and Lafayette started to chip away at the thin amount of rock above our heads, to make a little hole for the smoke to escape.
Once I got the fire started, everyone huddled together around it. That's when I heard the Panem anthem, and looked through the thin stick wall that blocked the entrance to our cave. It worked as a bit of camouflage, little insulation, and a nice alarm if anyone tried to sneak up on us at night.
All my teammates gathered with me and looked at the sky, where the capitol was projecting the fallen tributes. The first one to appear was the district three boy, John Adams. I heard Mulligan high-five Lafayette, who supposedly was the killer of Adams. Second was the boy from district four. That meant Jefferson's team had lost two members in the bloodbath.
Next was both tributes from district seven, I didn't know either of their names. Then there was was both tributes from eleven, and Julie. Seven deaths in the bloodbath. That wasn't that bad, I guess.
"Sorry about Julie," Mulligan mumbled.
"Didn't know her anyway," I grunted, turning back towards the fire.
"Heartless," Shippen commented.
My team huddled up close to my fire. I took off my scarf and rolled it up like a pillow. I laid my head down on it and looked up at the ceiling. setting a reminder in my head to wake up as early as possible, I then settled next to Mulligan and Laurens. I fell asleep to the noises of my team talking about home, and the stars through the hole in the roof.
