Chapter eleven
I woke up later that day, the sun was about to start setting on the horizon. I yawned and sat up. Nobody else was in here, except Lafayette who was grinning at me in the weirdest way. Oh no what the frick did I do.
"I see you really like John," Lafayette commented.
"I-" I stopped myself from any form of blushing. Hes just a friend, no, hes an acquaintance.
"You do know you fell asleep holding hands, right?" Lafayette said, smirking.
I stood up, gave Lafayette a glare, and then walked outside. John was sitting just outside, Mulligan was sharpening a sword on the rocks, and Arnold was no where to be seen. I went over towards John and sat down next to him. He smiled at me, and It was hard not to smile back. But relationships are overrated, and not a good thing to have when you could die tomorrow.
"Hi," I said to him.
"Hey," he responded back.
We sat on the rocks awkwardly shivering together. That's when the ground started to rumble. I looked up and saw a couple small rocks rolling down the mountain side. John looked up as well, and then the rocks became bigger. Soon I could see that near the top of the mountain boulders started rolling down at us.
"RUN!" Mulligan shouted.
I stood up and felt John grab my hand. He was pale white in fear. I started to run as fast as I could down the mountain side, it was very difficult not to slip of the frost-covered rocks. I pulled John behind me as rocks chased us, we frantically tried to get to our old cave, which would hopefully offer protection.
I looked over towards Lafayette, he was behind us. A rock slammed into the back of Lafayette's head as he was trying to stumble down the mountain.
"LAF!" Mulligan shouted, and turned around.
"YOU CANT GO BACK, YOU'LL DIE!" I shouted to him.
Mulligan looked at me with tears in his eyes, then sprinted towards Lafayette.
I could only get a glimpse of the scene, Lafayette lay unconscious on the mountainside, Hercules running towards a rockfall to save him. But I could not stare for long. I turned around, facing the woods, and continued to run with John.
We eventually reached the edge of the forest, rocks just at our heels. I stopped near a big tree and took a deep breath. I looked up at John, he had tears in his eyes. He's really close to Lafayette. I thought, feeling a bit of pain in my heart for the inspirational district two tribute.
John walked up to me slowly and then wrapped his arms around me and I heard him cry into my scarf.
*~*
Me and the team sat just outside the spruce forest.
Lafayette lay on the pine needles, next to a little pond we found. Hercules had miraculously saved Lafayette from the rockfall. Although, he had not woken up yet from his wounds. I expected him to die any moment now, Hercules never stopped crying over his friend, and John had only just gotten over the fact that his friend may die.
I sat in silence, this proved my point at not getting attached to people even further. It just causes pain and suffering.
He had been hit in the head and smashed in the side multiple times with large rocks. I expected he'd at least broken a couple ribs. Maybe brain damage as well. I knew the capitol had advanced medicine for situations like this, but there had been no supplies from a sponsor sent in.
I stood guard as the team cooked the raw chicken Lafayette had found a yesterday.
Everyone was on high alert, this was the area that Jefferson and the Schuyler's teams where supposed to live.
The Panem anthem started playing overhead. I looked through the trees at the video playing. It showed a big number six, then the name 'John Jay' and then the image of a young looking boy. A moment later it showed the number ten, 'Peggy Shippen', and a picture of her face.
Then as quickly as it had started, the video went away along with the anthem. That meant only two people died today, probably a new record for least deaths in a day during the hunger games.
I heard some leaves move and I jumped to my feet from where I was sitting on the ground. I scanned the undergrowth with my eyes, looking for anyone who might be trying to murder us. I saw a small bush move, and the rustle of leaves accompanied it. The sun was setting, so I could not quite make out what was hiding.
Then suddenly Arnold stepped out from behind the bush, and walked up to me.
"What are you doing in the forest?" Arnold asked.
"I could say the same," I glared suspiciously.
Arnold walked closer to me, glaring down into my eyes. He gave off the effect of a large intimidating person. Especially to someone as small as me. He then bent down, his scarf hanging into my face, and put his mouth up to my ear.
"I will get my revenge. You let her die. You will die too," Arnold whispered.
He then gave me a hateful look, and then walked past me towards my teammates. Was he going to hurt John? I mean Laurens? He's up to something. I should stay on alert.
*
I thought in silence for a moment. And realized my thoughts weren't of ending my life. What could have possibly changed me? I thought to myself. A day ago, I was thinking of slicing my throat. I don't know if it where for the better that I did not have many of those thoughts anymore.
I thought for a moment, trying to find out what had replaced my thoughts of suicide.
*
And what appeared in my head was Johns face, looking at me with his adorable smile.
Did John give me a reason to live? I thought, glancing back at where John and the others where. No. Its un-related to the subject. John, I mean Laurens, is just a friend at most.
The sun finished setting, and a couple stars began to shimmer in the dark sky. I yawned and sat down, staring out at the pitch dark forest. Everything was silent, except for the faint crackle of a dying fire behind me. It was much warmer down in the woods, we would probably sleep well tonight. Except for Lafayette, who had to fight for his life all night.
I yawned again, and then blinked a couple times to keep myself awake. I was not going to be that one guard who fell asleep on duty and let their teammates get taken. I tried to fix my eyes on the distant shimmering water of the ocean. It was probably not an actual oceans size, although I could not see the other shore.
It was probably a trick of the games. The game makers could make the barrier around the arena look however they wanted, like the sky. In the real world, it might even be day right now and the game makers decided for it to be night inside the arena. But they could also make it look like an ocean, when there really might just be a smaller amount of water.
Still, they could make a tsunami.
I heard a rustle of leaves behind me and jumped to my feet, squeezing the handle of a knife in my hands.
"Woah buddy," John said as he stepped out from behind a bush.
I lowered my knife and turned back towards the water, sitting back down on the ground littered with pine needles. John sat next to me and we stared into the distance. My eyes felt heavy, I probably hadn't slept in seventeen or so hours, due to waking up just as the sun rose and staying up late tonight on guard duty.
But I had pulled all-nighters before, I would be fine. Although those all-nighters had involved coffee.... Without even thinking about it, I slowly rested my head on Johns shoulder, curled up into a ball, and then let my eyes close.
"Good night," I whispered to John.
"G-good night," John stuttered.
I nuzzled my head further into his scarf, and then let myself fall asleep.
*~*
I woke up to the noise of a canon going off. I lifted my head off of whatever it was leaning on then quickly and frantically looked around for John. He was just where I had left him the night before. He was wide awake, but he didn't react.
"There have been two other canon shots. That's the third within the last thirty minutes, its the Schuyler team and Jefferson's team fighting." John said. "Arnold went to check it out, he came back and said it was one of the Schuyler sisters, and one from Jefferson's team. He'll have to go back out to find who else just died."
I nodded to him and rested my head back on his shoulder. That's when I freaking realized I was resting my freaking head on this freaking dudes shoulder. I slowly lifted my head back up and awkwardly sat cross-legged next to him. I looked at his face, trying to hide my own blush. He was blushing so hard he was bright pink, and it seemed as if he had been for the entire time I was asleep.
I looked up at the sky. There where still stars twinkling above, it was probably around four in the morning. I still felt tired, so I curled back up into a ball. My head automatically rested on Johns shoulder without me telling it too. It was like his shoulder was destined for me to sleep on.
I was to tired to move it, so I just rested it there. I needed a pillow, Nothing wrong with that. I just hoped John didn't mind. He'd probably hate me tomorrow morning, but that was okay, friendships are bad and overrated anyway.
Although, something inside me told me friendships where not so bad. And that I wanted to keep my special bond with John. No, not special, just friendship. And its Laurens. And friendships are bad. I scolded myself mentally. I tended to do that a lot these days.
I pushed my thoughts away. I could deal with this concept another time.
closing my eyes, I felt myself drift off to sleep.
Just because I need it for myself;
District 1- Thomas Jefferson, (Jefferson team)
District 2- Marquis de Lafayette, (Lafayette team)
District 3- Elizabeth Schuyler (Schuyler team)
District 4- Rosemary Book (Jefferson team)
District 5- Hercules Mulligan, (Lafayette team) Peggy Schuyler (Schuyler team)
District 6- Maria Reynolds (Jefferson team)
District 8- John Laurens, (Lafayette team) Christy Heart (loner)
District 9- Martha Cook (loner)
District 10- Benedict Arnold, (Lafayette team)
District 12- Alexander Hamilton (Lafayette team)
If you are wondering how Charles Lee (Jeff team), Angelica Schuyler (Schuy team) and Lucia Peterson (Jeff team) disappeared, it was those three canons from the Jefferson-Schuyler fight.
Please don't kill me for who I'm making die.
If you don't kill me now you'll probably kill me once I write the scene. I'll need some tissues when I write that scene, still have a while to go until that part happens though.
