Chapter eighteen

(A/N there is a Hamilton lyric in here. Its altered, two words have been changed to match the story line. The lyric is from Helpless. If you find it, you get a prize)

I froze, my face turned bright pink.

"Thanks for asking but the Alexander Hamilton machine is out of order," Hercules said, walking into the cave with a rabbit strung over hit shoulder.

"Herc, you ruin every moment ever," John said.

He asked to Kiss me? I didn't know how to respond. I mean I honestly wanted too, but it sounded almost unreal. The most amazing person in the world... kissing me? I think I might be having a mental break down.

"Sorry if that's too fast for you," John said nervously.

"Yes," I said.

"What?" John asked.

"Yes, you can kiss me," I said, blushing.

John stared dreamily into my eyes.

"Seriously, I cant even be around you two," Hercules said, dropping the rabbit on the ground and walking back out of the cave.

He moved his head closer... And then I suddenly felt his lips touch mine. I kissed him back, and then we backed away, blushing hard. I don't think I'd ever stop blushing from now on. John gave me an adorable smile, and I smiled back at him. Suddenly tears where welling up in my eyes, and I started crying.

"Whats the matter?" John asked, there beside me, like always.

"I-I don't want to loose you," I cried into his shoulder.

"You are such a cry baby," John teased.

"I-if you die I don't know what I'll do," I sobbed.

"Alexander, listen to me," John said seriously.

I looked up into his eyes.

"If I die, you need to go and be the winner of these games, hear me? Then you go home to your family, and you live a nice happy life. Understand?" John said, staring deep into my eyes.

"I wont be able to be happy," I said, my tears easing up.

"Well you have to be, for me, understand?" John said.

"A-and if I die, you have to do the same then," I said.

John nodded at me, and then he wrapped me tight in his arms.

"I wont be able to be happy. I'd be so lonely. I'd miss you so much," I said.

"As long as I'm alive, Alex, you will never feel so lonely," John whispered.

*~*

I stared outside, leaning on Johns shoulder. Hercules sat next to us as the Panem anthem started to play. The first face to appear was Jefferson's, with a large number one beneath it. Next was Elizabeth Schuyler, with a number three. Rosemary Book, with a four. Peggy Schuyler, with a five. And then Maria Reynolds, accompanied by a six.

"That just leaves us and Arnold," I pointed out.

"I wonder how he survived the explosion," Hercules said.

"So, what happens when Arnold dies?" I asked nervously.

"We survive as long as we can," John replied.

"The capitol will send all kinds of things at us," Hercules added.

I nuzzled my face closer to Johns.

"Lets make this day happy. And the rest of our days. Everyone here must swear the oath that no matter what happens, we must stay happy, agreed?" Hercules said.

"Agreed," John said.

*

"I don't know if I can keep that promise," I said.

"Alex," John said sternly.

"If John dies, I'll kill myself," I said.

"No you wont. I wont let you," John said.

"We can joke around and have fun- sure. But once John's gone, I'm killing myself. And you cant stop me," I said.

"Herc, If I die, do you promise to do all in your ability to stop Alex form killing himself?" John asked Hercules.

"Yeah, all in my ability. I'll tie him by his feet to the ceiling," Hercules said.

"That's no fair! You aren't my parents, I can do what I want with myself!" I protested.

"The official 'force Alex to stay alive squad' as been formed, sorry buddy," John said, patting my head like I were a dog.

*

I sighed and broke apart from John, standing up and heading inside the cave again. The stars shone in the sky, although they weren't like real stars, they where fake stars projected up there by the game makers. I curled up on the stone floor, grabbing my scarf that I hadn't worn for a day and making myself a pillow. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep.

I suddenly felt something petting my hair, and I opened one eye to see John.

"What," I mumbled.

"I'll take first watch, but I'm waking you up later for second watch," John said in a quiet and soothing voice, like he was talking to a baby.

"Sure," I grumbled.

"Night, baby girl," John said, and kissed my forehead.

"I'm not a baby girl," I complained.

"Then night, Love," John said, a bit of laughter in his voice. Then he added more quietly, "You certainly sound like one, though."

"Go away," I said, irritated.

I heard him laugh, and then heard some footsteps walked away.

*~*

I looked back at my precious little Alexander one more time before heading outside for first watch. He was just so perfect. I could still remember the moment his lips touched mine, I wish I could do it again. I stared out at the trees, rocks, sand and water. It was quiet, a little to quiet. I looked around at the sky. There was an unnaturally large moon shining bright on the arena.

That gave me all I needed to know. If the moon was full, huge, and bright, It was perfect conditions to film something. The game makers probably made it that way, so that the light would make it easy to film what was going on and broadcast it to all of Panem.

They would only need to make sure all the conditions where right, if something big was going to happen. I stood up, and then rushed back into the cave. Hercules was already snoring loudly, and I shoved him awake.

"Hmm?" He asked, opening his eyes.

"Be as quiet as you can, I'll go wake up Alex, we need to talk about something," I said.

There where three reasons to be quiet. First, the cameras wont pick up what we where saying if we talk quiet enough. Second, whatever big is going to happen might include monsters that have incredible hearing. Third, Benedict was out there.

I sat next to Alex and gently nudged him. He was already awake, though.

"Alex, we need to talk. But quietly, its something the cameras cant know about," I said.

He yawned, adorably, and then stood up and walked over with me towards Hercules.

"Alright, so I have a hint about something terrible that might happen," I started, my face only an inch away from Alex's and Herc's so I could talk really quietly.

I began to explain my ideas at what might happen, and together we came up with a plan. All of us went outside the cave, grabbed only the things we needed most, and then set off up the lonely mountain.

We hiked up the steep mountain side, and eventually it became a steep cliff. I began to climb up the cliff, and together we all reached the top. The cliff was only about fifteen feet tall, but if we had fallen we could have rolled down the entire mountain. We stopped to take a breath as we where almost all the way up to the top of the mountain. We had put our cheap winter jackets and scarves back on as we climbed higher.

The air began to thin out, and the temperature dropped lower and lower. That's when the big event started. I was staring out at the seemingly never ending ocean, when I spotted something strange. A wave began to form, and it got bigger and bigger every second.

"Look," I said, pointing at the tsunami.

"Good thing we are near the top of a mountain," Hercules commented.

I felt the small body of Alex curl up beside me. I smiled down at him and pet his hair like a puppy.

"I need a break," He mumbled, and closed his eyes.

"Nobody volunteered me as a pillow," I complained.

"This is what you get for being perfect," Alex said.

I watched the wave grow larger and larger until it was as tall as the spruce trees. The water on the beach pulled back as the wave came. I watched it crash into the forest. I heard a faint scream, and then a canon went off.

Benedict.

The wave continued and then smashed into the mountain where the rock fall had been. I expected to see the water drain back out into the ocean, but it stayed there. The trees had been completely covered, and the water didn't drain out, but instead became still. It was as if the game makers wanted to change the entire landscape. Now it was just the top third's of the mountains, and brown ocean water with trees floating in it.

I felt Alex snuggle closer to me and I blushed. I don't know how anyone could be so adorable. I needed to save him, I needed his innocent self to keep living. Maybe I could send a message to the capitol, so they have a guard on him at all times to make sure he does not do anything harmful to himself once he wins these games.

Then, as I watched the moon drift at unnatural speeds in the middle of the sky, I saw something in the water. I peered out at it, and from my windy mountain top, I saw a huge creatures head. I stroked Alex's cheek gently until he woke up. I could feel that he was blushing, he was really warm.

"Hmm?" He asked.

"There's something in the water," I whispered to him.

He squirmed around in my lap and then faced the water. I rested my chin on his head while he sat cross-legged on my lap.

"Don't see anything," he said.

"No, look," I said, pointing over at the creature.

"Holy-" He gasped.

The monsters head was that of a dragon. It was blue, the head about the size the Alex's entire body. It just sat there, its eyes flicking around as if it where taking in its surroundings. The creature was coated in blue scales, and it had some fish features to it, although it had the shape of a kind of dog. I didn't see any wings attached to the creature, so I guessed it was no dragon.

"A huge fish-dog," Alex commented.

"Think its hostile?" I asked him.

"If its in the arena, its hostile. Probably meant to kill us," Alex said bluntly.

We stared at the creature for a while more, sharing a couple ideas. Then suddenly the creature turned its head around, and looked right at us.
