Chapter 4 // There's A Mute At The Door

Waiting for what felt like hours, someone had finally answered the door - but it wasn't Mrs Carter.

My mouth felt dryer than the Sahara dessert, as a pair of blue eyes stared down at me like some sort of new species of insect.

It was Brooks, the guy in my calculus. Wait, maybe his name isn't Brooks and I've just been hearing his name wrong. What if his name is Brent or some shit?

Oh I'm sorry for not being a little stalker like Paige, I actually go to school to get an education. Not to write a journal about all the cute guys in our classes.

Biting into a red apple he was holding in his hand, I tried to focus on his face instead of his shirtless body.

"Who are you?" He mumbled with a mouth full of fruit. Running his fingers through his chestnut hair, I kicked myself for not getting a grip of myself.

Was he being serious? I go to the same school as him, and I'm even in one of his classes. We live next to each other for christ sakes

And no, it's not hypocritical.

Why?

I'll get back to you when I think of a good enough reason.

"Well?" He asked with a tone that told me he was growing impatient.

Blinking a couple of times up at him, I could hear a number of voices behind him.

Just speak, Marnie. Speak.

"Brooks, who's by the door?" A cheery feminine voice said from behind him.

Brooks, yeah see I knew thats what his name was.

"I don't know, I think she's a mute" as a hand pulled him from out of the door way, a pair of familiar grey eyes greeted me.

"Oh my god Marina hunny, I didn't know you were coming so early. Come in, come on" She said with a worried expression.

Looking down at her pristine white sun dress and black strappy stilettos, I thought to myself that I should probably have worn more than a pair of red shorts and my oversized grey hoodie.

I now 100% understand that plastic bag reference from my girl Katy.

I envied her thick blonde hair that twisted up in a perfect bun, not even one hair was out of place. My two French braided pigtails made me feel like, all that time trying to get this hairstyle right was just a waste of time.

Grabbing hold of one suitcase, she dragged it inside her house with me following closely behind, as she wasn't strong enough

Looking around in awe, my face showed that I was impressed with the surroundings.

A burgundy colour plastered across the hallway walls, a marble floor so clean I could see my reflection in it. A beautiful mosaic of tiles filled itself over half of the ceiling while draping over a side of a wall where family pictures hung.

"Thanks for letting me stay here Mrs Carter." I said with my back still faced towards her, my eyes were still trying to soak up the beautiful things I only wish I could have in my house.

Spinning to face her, I cocked an eyebrow with a small smirk on my lips as I watched her struggle trying to push down the handle of my suitcase.

"No problem" she said with her teeth clenched as she tried to push the handle down with her pastel pink bunny slipper. "And Call me Lillian hun." Nodding my head in silence, I all of a sudden got that feeling that I was being watched.

Like a pack of lions watching a gazelle, just waiting to pounce and drain every drop of blood from the helpless body.

Wow, Paige was right - I do have issues.

Slowly turning around, I froze as I looked up at the staircase. There stood 8 extremely hot guys staring down at me.

Now I'm not talking your boy next door hot, I'm talking about Jamaican jerk chicken hot covered in lava.

My inner goddess was jumping up and down with excitement. Flipping her hair over her shoulder and puckering her lips to apply a fresh coat of lipgloss.

I on the other hand couldn't even move my hand to wave. What the hell is wrong with me.

"Oh boys, you're all here. This is Marina, and she'll be staying with us for a while" feeling her drape her dainty arm over my shoulder, I gulped at their questioning eyes.

Hearing a crashing sound come from down the hallway, Lillian groaned and muttered a curse word under her.

"William be a doll and introduce everyone, and help Marina with her bags." She said with worry written over her face. Before I knew it, she had disappeared through the door at the end of the hallway which I'm guessing was the kitchen.

Averting my eyes from the kitchen back to the boys, all I could do was blink up at them all.

How can human beings be so perfect looking?

"See, I told you she was a mute" Brooks whispered to the tallest of guys that was standing next to him. The guy had dug his elbow into Brooks side, making him yelp in pain.

"I'm not a damn mute." I scoffed rudely.

Smirking down at me, he had rolled his eyes before making his way back up the stairs holding his side.

The tall guy had stepped down from the stairs while staring at me with a smile.

"I'm will." He smiled before shooting a hand out for me to shake. His dark hair was slicked back with water droplets dripping from the ends.
Dressed in a pair of black shorts and white tee, I admired how his toned muscled flexed under the sleeves of his shirt as he held his arm out.

"Marnie." I said copying his action.

Gripping my hand, he nodded his head with a face of surprise.

"Strong grip, that's good" leaning forward, he grabbed hold of my suitcases and bag that laid ontop of it. "Your gonna need it if you're staying with this lot" he said in a jokey tone.

Well I hope it was s jokey tone.

Tell me that was a jokey tone....

"That reminds me.." A chuckle escaped his lips as he turned back around.

"From left to right" Pointing his finger towards each of them, I couldn't help but feel like they were scrutinising me as they peered down at me like vultures.

"So that's Noah, that's Jos, that's Ty and Walter." Noah had saluted while Jos had blown me a kiss, receiving a few laughs from his brothers. Ty and Walter were ferternal twins, I knew this because Paige had been obsessed with Walter Carter since the day he let her borrow his green crayon.

Would you believe me if I said she still has that crayon to this day, kept in a zip lock bag in her box of 'hopes and dreams'?

"We can speak you know?" A boy with dark raven hair and brooding brown eyes, glared at his brother with a bored and agitated expression.

"That's the negative Nancy of the family, Eli, the short ass next to him is Sawyer-"

"What did you call me?!" Sawyer snapped. Eli rolled his eyes as his brown haired brother tried to push past him to get to Will.

"I called you short, what you gonna do about it?" Will laughed in his brothers face - well when I say face, he towered over him like the Empire State Building , so it was more of a laugh over his head - while Sawyer glared up at him with venom in his eyes.

"You're lucky I just ate" Sawyer threatened.

Noah had burst out laughing and even had to hold his head back to stop him from crying.

"What exactly were you going to do if you hadn't of ate, Sawyer hm? Punch his shins?" Noah asked with clear sarcasm in his voice.

I think by the end of this encounter I'd probably have whiplash. The way I had been looking from left to right to follow their conversation was really starting to get annoying.

Yet again I felt out of place.

"I'm 15 I have an excuse for being short, what's yours pretty boy?" Noah's laughs stopped as his eyes locked onto his brother. His boyish smile had melted away from his face and reappeared on his brothers.

"I'm still taller than you, so I'd shut the fuck up if I were you" he retorted back.

"Will you both just shut up?! You're gonna scare Marnie." Will snapped, but oddly still had a small smirk on his rosy lips. I admired how he still had a tinge of his southern accent still in his voice, I found it cute.

Letting go of my suitcase, his free arm slung over my shoulder, making the hairs at the back of my neck stand up. He looked down at me and grinned which I'm assuming was supposed to make me feel more relaxed.

If anything, it made my anxiety hit the roof.

"All offence attended, but her seeing your face probably scared the crap out of her already" I could see Will roll his eyes at Jos's words from the corner of my eye.

Leaning down with a small smile on his lips, he drew me closer to his side.

"Don't mind him, he's just mad that his girlfriend caught him mid whoring around." My teeth grasped my bottom lip as Jos began to flicker a lighter he had pulled out from his back packet. His eyes dead focused on the side of Will's face as he continued to fill me in on the gossip of Jos' love life.

"- Screaming like a banshie, it was amazing" Will cried a laugh while I on the other hand just felt like crying.

"I will set this bitch up in flames-" Jos snapped, leaning his body on the banister of the stairs, I gulped at his menacing tone.

"I feel like the introductions are done now" Will quickly butted in before looking at the others as to say 'you can fuck off now'.

They all disappeared in different directions, making sure to give me an unsure glare.

"They're all assholes-" Picking up my bags again , he took a few steps until one of his feet were placed on the bottom step. "But you'll warm to them."

Making his way half way up the stairs, he stopped again to look back down at me with his dark brows in a furrow.

"Marnie, you coming?" Noticing I was still stood in the exact same spot I had started in, I looked down to my feet in embarrassment before scurrying towards him.

He shook his head with a gentle laugh u see his breath before jogging up the rest of the stairs with my bags.

"You don't speak alot, do you?" Gazing up, I felt a sigh of relief as I saw that his back was still facing me. I didn't even realise the small flash of anger that was as clear as daylight on my face.

If I had laser beams as eyes, there would definitely be one hell of a hole burning right through his back.

"I don't usually have an hour long conversation with people I just met 5 seconds ago." I said with a snap to my tone . As we turned a corner, I looked at all the different coloured doors whilst we slowly trudged down the hall.

Spinning himself around so he was facing me while walking, his eyebrows shot is as he stared down at me.

"Okay okay, I'm sorry. Let's start again" as we reached the end of the hallway, his back leant against a multicoloured door as he smiled down at me politely.

"Hi, I'm Will." Scoffing a laugh, I shook my head with amusement.

He laughed along with me before spinning around to face the door. Twisting the door knob, he pushed it open and dumped my bags in.

"Welcome to your new room, Marnie."
