Chapter 8: Cameron

Skylar whispered to the egg, her voice pretty as if she was mumbling a song. Each time her lips blew a breeze of sound, it was clear as the ocean, full of life. I stared at the Asian girl hugging the egg gently with her smooth flour-colored hands.

Though, that was ten minutes ago.

I flinched and opened my eyes, now seeing that I was imprisoned. My wrist had a tight tight metal bracelet that were attached were attached to a chain link, and when I looked down I saw that it was the same on my ankles. Feeling a weight on my stomachs, I saw another—but larger-strip of metal that wrapped around my waist; it connected to the wall so I couldn't move much. For a few minuets, I wiggled around to try and slip out of them, but it was a helpless cause.

Beside me was Skylar, who was now returning to her senses as she gave me a quick blink and met my eyes, knowing what was happening. We were captured, and I had a strange feeling it wasn't for good things.

"You woke up?" I was jumped by a man's voice, who was getting something out from his leather bag. Eventually his eyes met mine for a second, then looked away.  "Eh, whatever."

He started to ignored us as he continued his task. I fiddled with my chains before adjusting myself, then suddenly pulled my feet apart, in a n attempt to break the chain that connected the, I looked at the man once more, before asking him halfheartedly and simple.. "Can you get us out then?"

"Nah," The guy responded like Sam, that was a big jerk and always took my orders wrong, every time. "You're my food , so why let you out?"

I blinked towards Skylar and she blinked back. Than at the same time our face ran with fear. We gave a glance saying, we're going to get eaten.

The spiky bumps of the mountain made my back ache. This cave had only one exit and a one way path. The cold smooth surface of cave made goose bumps on my legs. Only the scrambling sound of the guy's backpack avoided the death silence.

I decided information was our only help for how. The guy, necessary did not look like a monster. He had a Ancient Rome styled clothes white silk covering his body. He had a missing leg, which crept me out. His hair was shaggy bed hair popping up like a small kid. "Who are you?"

"I'm Erysichthon. Formerly. Turned out I was a reborn of him and I'm pretty hungry, well I'm always hungry." Erysichthon answered. Blank. I remained silent. Than I shook my head aggressively and asked,

"So your a reborn of whatever that is." I concluded.

"His name's Er-y-si-ch-th-on." Erysichthon answered about his before life name. "Don't you guys study Greek Mythology?"

This time Skylar replied for me. "No, and I'm highly sorry for not knowing who you are."

She sounded so respectful. I had a thought that she might try to use her manners and stuff to trick the hungry guy. I decided to keep my mouth shut and let Skylar do the talking.

Erysichthon looked pleased by the human girl's behavior and I just realized he was pretty annoyed with me. I silently thanked Skylar for saving my guts. "It's fine. Technically I'm not a monster so..."

My mouth was about to blab something out but stopped just in time. I shut my jaws close and glanced at Skylar. "Thank you for your understanding." Skylar gave a gentle smile. "If you are not a monster, how come that you are in the Island of Destiny?"

The reborn sighed his mind flying to his memories.  "So I was known for eating everyone—,"

"Wait, what?" Not even the good actresses Skylar could not hold her gasp. She raised her eye brows. Erysichthon coughed few times and the prisoners closed their wide opened mouth.

"And King Enzo was looking for monsters but he thought I was basically a monster so he captured me and thrown me in here. It's not fair! I'm human!" I almost made a gagging sound. For once I agreed with King Enzo, this guy is a monster classified level. But if I were King Enzo, I would have incarcerated Erysichthon instead.

"Um okay...thank you for explaining." Skylar awkwardly answered with a very crooked smile.

"Well quite the chit chat. Go in the hot water." The monster human lazily waved his hand. Skylar and I let a horrified look. Before Erysichthon lost his patience for us to draw in their, Skylar moved her mouth sending three invisible words. Blizzard is missing. Her eyes ran with tears. She was quite a crybaby, but this was a time to cry. It was like the Island of Destiny was a place to make you cry—and die.

And well, I decided to close my eyes. You know, just wanted to act like a movie star. But than, they ain't gonna die just by few minutes.

Few moments passed after I shut my eyes. I opened one eye, and found, a dead human/monster. And I estimated that it was Luna saving the day but instead, out of all others, I couldn't believe my eyes. It wasn't the Ancient Mommy Bird, nor her chick. It was Skylar Suzuki her arm chains cut open, and one ninja star in her right hand: and the other in Erysichthon's neck.

Before she can save me, the girl threw up on the smooth cave floor. From behind, Blizzard came hopping to her tilting her head to see if her master was okay. Skylar puked until her stomach was empty and her face looking unwell as if she wanted to throw up more. With her dizzy feet, she came up to me and cut my chains with her sword. She croaked,

"Sorry." And fell on the floor, fainted. Quickly and carefully, I cut open my leg chains an Skylar's. Since it was too risky and unbelievable to travel in this condition, I rested Skylar away from her thrown up stuff and far away from the dead body. I gently placed my extra handy coat on her, as I got to work.

It was still unbelievable Skylar was whom killed Erysichthon. Anne her aim, right on the neck was unbelievable. Instead of the monster's heart she decided the neck, to make a silent kill. If she aimed his heart, Erysichthon would be able to gag a little before he swept into his final sleep. But right in the bull eye of his neck, I wondered what kind of training Skylar had. Skylar wasn't just a helpless girl coming to die, she was skilled more than me. Skill will only be useful in the Island of Destiny, even bravery sometimes has limits. I felt like death was closer to me than anyone I met on this island.

I attempted to make a warm fire with some spare wood I collected the day before. Skylar snored peacefully but between each minutes, she moaned and let out cries. It must be hard for her to see so much blood, that she caused. In my school, some popular girls would do those bleh sound whenever they see a paper cut. Although they were only drops, if they seen this much blood, I'm pretty sure they would faint.

When I was being warmed by the fire and staring at Skylar, Blizzard lightly pecked my thigh And let a weak squeak as if saying, is mommy okay? To Blizzard, Skylar was her true mother to her. The little bird must be really worried. I gently said,

"Skylar will be alright." Blizzard squeaked happily and fluffed up her feathers. I felt like she actually knew what I have said, or maybe the power of the Ancient Bird she might actually understood. Either way, I was melted by Blizzard's little squints her small beak gently pecking her master.

I had enough time to set up the sleeping bag, make a quick patrol in the cave, and get settled before Skylar woke up. Her moans stopped as time passed, and sleepily opened her eyes.

"Cam?" She asked rubbing one eye with her hands. I shot up and rushed over to Skylar's side.

"You defeated that guy. Your safe, just rest." I ordered preparing something few extra berries I picked yesterday. The girl moaned,

"Did I kill it though?' I decided to stay silent for a moment. I wanted to pick the right words, but I knew I must tell the truth. I simply whispered,

"You did."

Skylar sticked her palms to her forehead in shame. "No, no, no." She croaked her eyes puffy about to cry once more.

"It's fine," I tried to calm her down, "It was the only choice."

I was a bad persuader, Skylar still felt ashamed dipping her head in shame. She began the endless hiccups. Her cry was like a new born babies, but will emotions only she would know. I remained in place, I wasn't going to be any help whatever I do.

Hiccups, ere endless. They had invisible huge food struck in your mouse, no matter how much you tried you can not swallow it. It was cold, and Skylar's eyes must really sting and inhaling dry air was bad for her lungs. I hoped her hiccups stopped soon.

My wish was not grated. Skylar continued her hiccups. My chest tightened and guilt began to pour in my throat. All I could do was just watch— Luna was right. I—we are going to die. Even if we didn't I felt helpless seeing Skylar cry in front of me. Her black gaze was clouded all the time and I never sawn it sparkle. Just seeing this made me want to die in peace.

"Cam." Skylar croaked her voice cracking. It was weaker than a new born kitten. She did not even mind to wipe off her nostrils. "Hol, Ltd, my ha, ands"

I couldn't believe what she said. Skylar still wanted me to be at her side, even though I was this hopeless. If There was anything I can do, this was the only.

I held Skylar's both hand that was wet and freezing. The fire gave some warmth, but even the powerful element could not heal us fully. Snow still blew outside. They shot everywhere like arrows. Monsters were difficult enemy's, though weather was a enemy too.

"I kill, led, Erysichthon." Skylar steadied her hiccups. Her eyes started to dry. I handed her a water bottle singling to drink. I could not let her dehydrate. Blizzard squeaked and sticked like a kit mewing for milk to the master's side.

"It was the only choice Skylar." I whispered gently patting her back.

"Bu, but Cam!" Skylar was in the verge of crying. Her breath fastened once more and cheeks glowed bright red. "If I have to do that for one month I can't bare thinking about. I don't want to be a killer!"

The Asian girl had the heart of gold. Though it was mainly self defense she grieved to the monster human. I understood though. It felt wrong to take so many lives from now on so we can survive. I felt like the Island of Destiny had another purpose apart from eliminating weak. Making cruel live.

I had no words to be said. The blizzard kept blowing making whistles every mountain corner. They slither all places covering it with snow. I wondered what kind of other natural disasters would be waiting. The more I walk, the more desperate and closer the death was to me.

I had several options to responding the girl who had the good. Tell her it was necessary? Tell her this was the only way to live? Change the subject and praise for her great aim? No.

"Skylar," My eyes seek what was beyond her clouded gaze. "I know I hate this. I don't know what's right to do. But I just know King Enzo does not deserve a lace for king. I wish peace and freedom will come to Bellicor."

We were kids, I know. I do not know how my parents suffer from the unfairness, or if I do know what peace actually means. I do know that the Island of Destiny is unnecessary.

I felt like Skylar's clouded gaze turned thinner, faintly. Although they had mist covering her sparkling bright eyes, she was feeling better. The frightened girl looked straight into my brown eyes. I gently squeezed Skylar's hand with my creamy brown skinned hand.

"Thanks Cam. I wish we met in a different way though, as kids in middle school." The Asian girl wiped off her diamond tears with her arm. I knew what Skylar's respond met. Things could have—been quite different. Perhaps we never bothered to talk, just class mates or a random students passing by the hall. But if a small moment brought us to look closely at each other, know each other, we would have been what we are hoping now. I was afraid to say nor think of that word. It was a dream never coming true.

I dropped my words. "Yeah. I wish that too."

Than I let go of Skylar's smaller hands. I tucked it in my pocket instead. We avoided meeting eyes.

Dreams and wish. That was all we had and what to be desperate for. But the god or gods turned their head away from Bellicor, away Fromm the Island of Destiny.

Even though this is quite fast, I want to exclaim the fact that Survive 30 Days is almost at 100 votes! I am currently freaking out, while my friend tells me she'll read it once I got 1K votes. (Tears) But it's still amazing to me. The last adventure book I wrote, Perla of Elements was pretty horrible and I'm glad I decided to quit that and make this book.
