Chapter 2: 15 Years of Hell
*15 years later*
Birthday aren't special to my sister and I anymore even though we've grown one year of age to the next one. Celebration comes afterwards of a bad time, the bad time we are in is a Zombie Infection Apocalypse. It's nice to spent your lifetime in a toxic dump.
Mother Heather isn't here anymore she died five years ago from a illness because of stress. We are still depressed about her death, she'll be missed.
Father got bitten by the infected. He shot himself to death in front of my own new born eyes.
"Owinna, wake up!" Elissa shakes me. "We are running low on food, we must snag something!"
I groaned and ignored her. I am still dreaming asleep.
I felt a smack upon my face. That really shot me up.
"Ow, you idiot!" I seethe at Elissa.
"Owinna, want to starve to death, then stay here. We are leaving the shelter now to get some grub then we head back." Elissa told me.
"Good luck, most food should've been out of date by now." I smiled.
Elissa smacked me again. "Don't give me a smart alic remake, you're fifteen years old and you act like a child when she is doing her homework." She says.
"I am still a girl on puberty." I commented back.
"No jokes, Owinna, come now." Elissa stands up. "Time to get serious, it's not play time."
"I know, you just smacked me in my sleep, girl. I need my sleep." I stand up along with her.
She rolled her eyes. Elissa tossed me a gun. We reloaded them.
"Time to head out;" She says. Elissa moves up to the basement trapdoor and removes the lock. We went out.
Morning fresh air was roaming. Birds were singing, however the place was brought to a halt after what happened fifteen years ago on my birthday. I am such a special baby.
"We are heading through the house, keep your eyes open." Elissa told me. I nodded. She slide open the back door. We aim our guns around. No one around.
"It's clear." I said.
"Okay good, let's move." Elissa says. She's acting like she's part of the army or some kind of spy organization, oh well, just following her leads.
There was no sound of zombies and smells like decomposition. I cover my mouth trying not to vomit.
"What's that smell?" I asked.
"Someone's dead body." Elissa says while we are walking to the entrance area of the house. The smell got so much intense.
"Ewww, that's nasty!" I yelled when I saw a bunch of dead zombies on the floor. "How long they've been here?" I asked.
"Since you were born, Owinna." Elissa replies. "They're dead because father killed them." Elissa opens the broken front door. "Let's move out, stay close by, the infected can be anywhere in this lousy neighborhood."
Elissa and I head out of the house. Abandon streets and leftfull chaos was among.
"The infection is wrecking the whole country." I said.
"I know, it wasn't like this until scientists came up with a idea of vaccines that's full of such failure." Elissa replies.
We turned and walked down the streets carrying a gun in our hands. Elissa taught me how to reload, aim, and fire a gun. We walked down to a abandon food store. Grass, mist, and dust was filled the hollow store.
"Snag some chips and some other stuff that can be useful." Elissa says. "Get some beverage too while you are at it, I am going to the heart of the store to see if they gotten some ammo."
The decomposition smell is still lingering in my nose. I grab some chips and look at the date. No due date. This shall be alright. I went behind the countertop. The security cameras must be disabled due to everything shut down fifteen years ago.
I pull some bags and I even pulled the cash register opened. I grab the paper dough instead of the coins. I stuffed it in one of the bags. I put the chips into another one. I walk to the coolers and opened them.
"I'm suprised they still work." I said. I grab soda and water bottles. I put them into another bag. I saw Elissa come in open a two door entrance from the heart of the store.
"No ammo, you got something?" She asks.
"Chips, soda, and cash." I replied. Elissa rolled her eyes.
"Let's move on to the next store, better be something useful." Elissa says. I groaned. She looked at me. "Owinna, put that gun in your pocket and carry the bags in one hand. When that's full, move it to the next. That's why everyone's born with two hands."
Elissa and I head out of the abandon store.
"The mall part is where bunch of supplies are, but watch out of the infected." Elissa informs. "Keep your eyes open." We kept down walking on the street and I saw a big building in the distance.
"Should we just go to the quarantine?" I asked.
"I am not turning into some strict school of living, so no." Elissa replies. "We both can live if you stick together."
As we got closer, the foggy distance of the mall faded form view. It looks like it got bombed in some parts and caved in. Yet, still quiet. No sign of the infected or zombies.
"It's quiet, let's move in." I said.
"You got my back." Elissa says, "then I'll have yours."
We entered the mall. Holes in the rooftop and some walls of the mall looked caved in.
"Mostly, mother sneaks out during the night when we were asleep. Keep it quiet, don't cause any attention to the infected." Elissa, my sister explains. "All you want to do is ended up getting bitten."
We head to the first door which is a gun store.
"Don't snag too much money, if some hunters from the quarantine like two miles away find us, they'll take it if it's too much money." Elissa informs me. "I'm going to deer hunting store to find ammo and clothes. Let's move out."
I walk into the gun store called "Ammo and Shoot." Just when I enter the store, I've head screeches. Screaming of the infected.
"Owinna, watch out, the infected!" I hear Elissa alerting me. I dropped the bags that I was carrying. I can hear the infected coming closer and closer.
"Hurry!" I told myself. I use my elbow to smash the glass that was holding the guns and ammo. That's really going to help bring the infected over. I shove the ammo in the bags.
"Owinna, check for any button, it might shut the metal gate down, so the infected won't enter!" Elissa yells.
"Okay, got it!" I replied. I look behind the check out area. There was a area with a green and red button. I hit the red one. I here a beep. I checked the metal gate was sliding down closing the entrance of the shop. When it hit the ground, I breathe of relief.
"I'm closed in!" I yelled out.
"Good, wait until the infected passes or I can find the way my out to reach you without getting hit by zombies!" I hear Elissa replying.
The store was now dark and dusty. The good thing, it wasn't cold. It was in the summer. I grab the rest of the ammo. The infected are louder now which means I'm close. I pulled the cash register opened. I take out some dollars. To save some room, I put it in my pocket. I even took the money from the bag and put it in my pocket.
I hear a knock from the back of the shop. "Sis, open it up! I found a way out. The infected is coming!" I hear my sister, Elissa, said to me.
I grab the bags of ammo, food, beverages, and pistols. I walk to the back door. I opened it up leading me to the heart of the gun shop. I found another right ahead. I opened it up. A fresh breeze with a sky was there, however my sister, Elissa, was standing right in the way!
"Come, let's go." She turns her back against me. She was holding a large bag. "Come on, this stuff is heavy."
I walk outside and the door slammed right behind me. We began to jog. The infected was pounding the doors right inside the mall probably the entrance of the gun shop.
"I got some ammo and pistols." I told her.
"Good, now let's head back." Elissa replies.
When we entered our house, we were greeted by the aroma of rotten flesh.
"Can we just get rid of these infected bodies?" I asked her.
"No, it's too disgusting." Elissa replies.
"It'll get worst if we let them sit here." I informed her.
"Maybe, we will move them some day. Right now, not a good time, Owinna." Elissa replies again. We walk to the slide door. We were in the backyard finally. We head to the shelter. We went down, we put the bags on the floor. We have fencing all around the backyard, the infected must come at them hard in order to break through to get to us.
"Did we lose the infected?" I asked.
"It seemed so." Elissa replies. She goes into the large bag and pulled out thick puffy clothes that were colour of camouflage. "Turn around." She commands me. I rolled my eyes as I turned around.
I can hear her getting undressed and dressed into the camouflage clothing. "I went into a army store as well." She says. "You can now turn around."
I turned around. I opened my eyes. She wasn't in one of those camouflage suits. Elissa was in jeans and a black jacket. She looks well with a pony tail. If guys were looking at her, they'll drool.
"Here, put on this." She tosses me jeans and a red long sleeve shirt. I catched it with my hands.
"Thanks." I said while I stand up. She looked right at me. "Uh, can you please turn around?"
Elissa groans as she turns around. I get undressed leaving my bra and underpants on. I put the red long sleeve shirt on and the jeans. It was comfortable and it fit.
"Okay, you can turn around now." I told Elissa. She did.
Soon, a rain storm came in. No lightning, but a bit of thunder. Elissa closes the shelter door and locks it. I went into our sleeping bags. The infected was mostly in the huge populated areas like a mall or a city. The small of decomposing flesh is still in my nostrils. Overall, it's beautiful to go outside.
"How long do we have to go back outside" I asked her.
"Maybe tomorrow to shoot some of the infected, so the area can be clear for about couple of days." Elissa replies. "Right now, get some sleep."
"Okay," I replied. "Good night."
Elissa rolls her eyes. It's probably a pain to sleep upon the floor even though it has carpeting on it. Whatever. I relaxed and went to bed.
