Chapter 22

Dedicated to VictoriaSlater457 . Thank you so much for the new cover! I love it!

Anyway, here it goes!

It doesn't take long for me to figure out what is wrong. He had been under a spell; that explains the silver hue that was in his eyes. Who cast the spell and why remains a mystery. Right now though I find t more important to make him understand a few things and find out a few things myself so I don't ask anything about the spell.

I look at him with a frown as he lets go of the burning tip of the torch and stares at his hand. I can't help but look too. Whatever creature he is he certainly can't be immune to fire. I mean I am, some elemental Witches and Wizards are too but I don't think he's any of them. Not even a Fallen Angel is immune to fire seeing as its wings are burnt before it falls. The Angels are as stupid as pigeons and it doesn't surprise me that they have built a wall around themselves to keep themselves from doing stupid things.

"What are you?" The words fall out of my mouth before I can stop them.

He looks up at me as if I've grown another head. "How can you not know? I thought everyone knew by now."

I shake my head and raise an eyebrow. "Well sorry, but I didn't get the memo."

He narrows his eyes but before we can take this any further, the door to the end of the hall busts open and a man in his mid-fifties walks in with his eyes narrowed. "Adam!" Adam turns around in alarm and stares at the man.

Before responding the man turns his narrowed gaze on me. "Who is she? What is she doing here? Why did you bring her here?" His narrowed eyes turn to Adam again. "You know no one is allowed in here. No one from out of the Nex. You know that don't you boy?"

Adam gulps and looks as confused as ever. He doesn't remember anything. He doesn't know who the man standing in front of him, giving orders, is. "Y-yes," he stutters.

"Yes what, boy?"

"Yes, I know that no one is allowed in here." But he really doesn't. He doesn't remember anything.

"Then why is she in here? Do you trust her that much?"

Adam, not knowing why either of us is here or how we ended up here, takes a deep breath before responding. "Yes. I trust her enough."

I know he doesn't trust me at all but right now if he says otherwise both of us will die and I'm happy that he has enough common sense to not tell the truth about him just waking up from being under a spell.

I don't know this man but he certainly seems intimidating with his narrowed black eyes that seem to be staring right into your soul, the look on his face seems to be permanently stuck the way it is with the hard eyes and turned down lips, the wrinkles in between his eyes, stuck there because of frowning all the time.

"Very well then," the man responds in his deep voice. "We'll see how much you trust her later," he mutters under his breath but I catch it.

His hardened gaze turns to me. "And who are you? What's your name girl?"

"Eve," I respond.

"Eve what?" Is that his way of asking for my last name? Because I'm not telling.

"Just Eve," I say with a small smile on my lips.

He narrows his eyes even more, if possible. "Don't try to fool me, girl. I know you're not an Angel."

I raise an eyebrow. "Do you? Because I can assure you, I do have wings."

"That doesn't make you an Angel."

"What does it make me then?"

Adam jumps in before the man can respond. "Only Angels and Fallens have wings. If she's not an Angel, then she's a Fallen which is a banned Angel."

The man stays still for a second and I silently thank Adam for having helped me. As if hearing me he turns and smirks at me before it fades away when he turns to look at the man.

The man's eyes are still narrowed. "Well then looks like you've found your match, boy." I furrow my brows as he turns and walks away, silently closing the door behind him. What the hell did he mean by that?

Adam clears his throat and I turn to him. "You better explain who you are and how we got here because I just risked my whole life."

It doesn't take long for us to get back to the room and for me to explain everything to him and the look on his face is more horrified than ever.

"What do you remember?" I ask.

He frowns and stares intensely at the ground. "Well, I remember coming here a few months ago. I wasn't doing very well back then. The Nex had sent a special agent to get me to work with them," he shakes his head. "More like work for them," he mutters under his breath before continuing. "Then I remember wanting to leave and actually trying and that's it. I guess I did escape then, huh? Only, my memory loss brought me right back to the place I was running from."

I frown at him as he gazes at the wall in wonder. "Why did you want to escape?"

His eyebrows tilt down in a frown again and I see the panic in his eyes. He starts unbuttoning his shirt, completely ignoring me and I look at him with narrowed eyes. "Uh, what are you doing?"

Once again, he ignores my question. "You said I told you that it was a Werewolf?"

I frown in confusion. "What?"

"My wound. You said I told you it was a Werewolf who attacked me?" He asks as he traces the scar on his stomach all the way to his hip.

I tilt my head to the side, still not understanding. "Uh, yeah?"

He lets out a deep breath and stands up, walking to the mirror and frowning at his own reflection. "It wasn't."

My eyes widen. "It wasn't a Werewolf?"

He shakes his head.

"Then what was it?"

"You don't want to know."

"But I do!"

He turns around and faces me, trying to object again but the door of the room suddenly slams open and he's cut off.

I gasp as I see soldiers walk in with the guy from before leading them.

I stand up from the bed and step closer to Adam who's buttoning up his shirt again. "What's going on?"

No one answers, of course. The old man, though, gestures for the guards to come forward and they do.

One grabs my arm and I try to make him let go but his grip is too tight. I try punching him in the face but another guard steps in, catching my other arm in a firm grip while I thrash around shouting at them to let me go.

The others grab Adam too but he doesn't move. He just stands there, unmoving, staring into the eyes of the old man with hatred.

The old man turns around and gestures for the guards to follow him.

Soon after I found myself in the garden I always loved to visit with Adam right next to me. There are a few more people too. Well, there's Acair, next to him stands an older woman with white hair. Next to them is a couple: a man probably in his early 40s and a woman in her late 3woman in her late 30s. A younger woman stands next to them with blood-red hair and I notice it's the woman that I saw before downstairs when I was trying to sneak into the Dragon-room. Yeah, I named it. Get over it.

Next, to them are a couple of other people. I notice that they aren't normal people, they're people from the Nex but they're not what I expected. There's more than thirteen of them but if I try to group them up based on their looks and possibly species, there are thirteen families. Among them is the old man who I first met in the Dragon-room. The same one who ordered the guards to capture us.

There are thirteen families so that means there are more than thirteen people making up the Nex; a lot more.

When we finally arrive in front of them, I snatch my arms away from the guards and glare at them before turning to glare at the Nex.

Adam still acts like he's not a living and breathing creature as the guards release his arms. He just keeps staring at the Nex with hard eyes.

The guy in the middle of the group, the same old man from before, steps forward and looks at us with narrowed eyes. Let me correct that: he looks at me with narrowed eyes. I glare right back.

He then turns away from me and looks at Adam with distrust.

"You have broken the law today Adam." Adam clenches his jaw in response. "And you know what is going to happen now. You knew the consequences of your actions but you still did it anyway." Adam keeps his gaze far away from the old man.

The old man turns to the small crowd, sharing a look with everyone before looking back at Adam. "I, Arregaithel Perazac, sentence you, Adam if The Sun Walls, a traitor, with Cruciatu for a lifetime." Everyone gasps but each for a different reason.

I'm mostly shocked because he's from The Sun Walls. That means he's either an Angel or a Fallen and I can't decide which is worse. But I think the others gasp because of what he's sentenced with? And for a lifetime? Boy, that's going to be long. I mean if he's a Fallen then he's immortal and if he's an Angel he's simply going to live much longer than normal.

Adam doesn't move or show any kind of emotion with his face remaining lank but I can see that he stiffens as he hears the old man.

Everyone in the small crowd starts to whisper among themselves. Some send us both dirty looks while others just look at us with pity.

"Do they really deserve that?" Someone from the crowd speaks up.

"The real question is whether or not he deserves it." The old man points at Adam. "The bitch totally deserves it." I glare at him as everyone's gazes turn to me, scrunching their noses at me.

I clench my jaw, trying hard not to snap back but my patience is running out. I can feel my eyes flashing between my normal color and the dull blue-ish purple of a Phoenix.

Adam seems to notice this and steps closer to me, trying to calm me down.

"He did bring her here," someone from the Nex interjects. Others nod in agreement and the old man's lips tilt up in a small smirk.

I don't even know what the punishment is!

I can feel the fear rolling off of Adam who is standing much closer to me now. I'm not much better. I don't even know what they know. Do they know I'm part of the Resistance? Is that why they're willing to punish us? I mentally shake my head at myself. That can't be it. They can't know it. It's probably because of the fact that the old man found us in the Dragon-room a few hours ago.

Thinking about it, it wasn't even that long ago. He must've really been in a hurry to punish us.

A woman from the group steps forward, standing next to the old man. She looks at him and he nods. That's all she needs. She comes towards us with a big old book in her hand. It's one of the really old ones; the ones with paper and ink. She opens it and finds the page she's looking for before stepping closer to Adam and me and starting to chant in another language.

When she's chanting the old man starts speaking. "Just remember your crimes. You betrayed us by bringing a member from the enemy into our homes and giving her all the information they would need to destroy us. This is what you get for betrayal." Then they do know that I'm with the Resistance huh? I should've seen that coming. How did they even find out? He then turns to me. "And you! Tell me what you are right now!"

I stare at him in the eyes, unmoving and he becomes impatient. But then a smirk grows on his face and I shiver in fear. "Fine, don't talk, but you will regret it later." I still say nothing as the Witch's chanting gets louder and louder and finally, I look over after I hear Adam yelp.

I stare at the Witch in shock as I see her holding a knife with which she has sliced open Adam's palm. Blood drips from the open wound and the Witch lets some drop in a bowl she's holding. Adam frowns at her as two guards walk up to him, gripping his arms tightly. He doesn't move though.

The Witch turns to me and I know that I will not let her do what she did to Adam to me too. I feel my eyes flashing the color of my magic as she gets closer but she sees it and stops dead in her tracks, her chanting coming to a stop. Thank Sekuum for that, I don't know how much longer I could take hearing her horrible voice.

Her eyes widen as she looks back at the leader and he just nods in her direction. She gulps and turns back to me, cautiously taking steps closer, restarting her chanting. I gasp when the Witch slices my palm all of a sudden and lets the blood fall into the bowl. I try to attack her but two guards step forward taking hold of my arms, not letting me move.

She keeps chanting as I glare at her. My cut is still open, my magic being somewhat dormant. She adds more ingredients to the bowl but I don't pay attention to what they are. Then a smoke comes out of it and her eyes sparkle in excitement.

Freaking sick Witch.

She walks to Adam first and takes some of the blood in the bowl with her fingers and starts drawing something on his forehead. After the shape is done he cries out in pain.

She turns to me and I immediately try to get out of the guards' hold to no avail. She gets some more of the blood and starts drawing on my forehead as I thrash around trying to break free.

Suddenly she steps back and I feel like every single bone in my body is being broken. I close my eyes and scream as the pain gets more intense. It doesn't go away as I feel emotions that are not mine fill my head. Pain, immense pain is what I feel. My eyes water as it gets worse. I feel like someone's chopping me to pieces. I feel the tears fall. Through my half-opened eyes I see the people from the Nex standing there looking at us with amusement.

I glare at them and curse at them in my head.

"Fuck you! You evil, selfish bastards!" I shout out when I finally find my voice.

The leader just chuckles in response and smirks. "You asked for it, girl."

I feel everything get blurry and my head starts hurting even more. Soon I lose consciousness, my body going limp, being held up only by the guards. The last thing I see is the bastard looking at me with a satisfied smirk on his face which I promise myself to wipe off one day.
