Chapter 14
We walk for hours before we finally decide to settle somewhere for the night. We have both been completely silent the whole way except for when we have to decide which way to go. I found out he's going to Mora so I think we're on the same side but I still don't say anything about Consurrexi. Neither does he.
Even with all the silence the whole day, it hasn't been awkward. I think we both appreciated it.
That night we take turns keeping watch and in the morning we set off again.
It's midday now and the weather is getting warmer the closer we get to Mora. Being away from the mountains the Capital is considerably warmer than Consurrexi. It's still not the warmest part in the country though. That would be the Somarix Desert. It's actually divided in the two neighboring countries: Imperium and Syrusia.
All the Imperials hate Syrusians and vice versa. It's probably because Angels lead Syrusia while Imperium has tried only getting non-Supernaturals to lead it. Either way Syrusia is the only country that's not helping us, or taking a side, in the past few revolutions.
After walking for another while I get bored of not talking so I ask the first question that comes to my mind. "Werewolf?"
Adam looks around wildly. "What? Where?"
I groan. "I meant your wound. Was it caused by a Werewolf?"
He turns to look at me with a frown. "Why do you ask?"
I shrug. "It had made me wonder when I was stitching you up."
He doesn't respond. He just keeps walking, eyes forward and a frown marring his brow.
I shake my head at myself for not keeping silent and keep my gaze on the floor.
"Yeah."
I raise an eyebrow at him in question.
"It was a Werewolf."
"Oh." I don't know what else to say. Well I do but they're all questions.
Having noticed the look on my face he raises an eyebrow. "What now?"
I narrow my eyes. It's worth a try. "What happened? How did you get the wound?"
He turns to look forward. "It was kind of an accident. I was supposed to... well..." He sighs. "Never mind. I got into a fight with one and he just attacked me."
Somehow I don't believe what he said but nod anyway.
That night we do the same thing as the night before. One keeps watch while the other gets a little rest.
Adam suddenly wakes me up in the middle of the night though. I blink at him in question.
He looks at me with wide eyes. He swallows before looking to his right. I look too but I can't see anything.
I turn back to him. "What's..." He shushes me. This time I make sure to whisper. "What's going on?"
"Venums." That's it?
I frown. "What's that?" I ask, still whispering.
He nods towards something I can't see and holds up a hand. I follow his gaze and after a few seconds I finally hear it; a howl like cry with a hissing sound following after. My eyes widen. Uh oh.
I look at Adam and he looks at me. We both agree on it without even talking. Getting up, we both run deeper into the woods and away from the monsters. I couldn't even bring the backpack; it would slow us down and make too much clinking noise. Although I'm afraid they would find it and sniff us out that way, I had no choice.
We run for a few minutes before stopping to listen again for the monsters. This time the cry seems closer and I look at Adam in fear.
"What do we do?"
"Run."
He takes my hand and pulls me with him. I stumble over my own feet as I try to keep up with him. He's incredibly fast.
The next time we hear it the howling sounds even closer to us. They know we're running. They're on our tail. I hold on tighter to Adam's hand.
It doesn't take long before I feel something digging into my back and I go down. Adam realizes I let go of his hand and turns around.
He swears before running towards me. I scream in pain as I feel something sinking into the skin of my neck.
I roll around to get it off and the creature hisses at me. At least it's not on my back anymore. I don't get to look at it for long before it tries to lunge at me. I scream again and cover my face with my arms. The pain doesn't come though. I open my eyes and look over my arms to see Adam and the Venum wrestling.
The Venum is an ugly thing. It's a hairy black ball with the tail of a snake. Its legs are small but it moves at the speed of light. The only things visible on its face are its fangs; white and long.
I know I said it was black but it seems to be changing color. It hisses at Adam and he throws a punch in its face. It's only when it changes color that you can see its eyes. They're small black dots above his fangs.
I sniff as my eyes get filled with tears of pain. I try not letting them fall but some do. I don't pay attention to the creature and Adam wrestling. I just focus on the pain growing in my back. Maybe that's what's making it worse. With all those tears my contact lens falls out of my right eye.
I close my eyes, not wanting for Adam to see my eyes. I can't even find the lens. It's completely lost.
I sniff as I hug my knees close to my chest. I should be helping Adam win the fight but I just feel so much pain. It's like I'm being impaled by a sharp sword over and over again in my back.
After a few seconds I feel something wet touch my face and snap my eyes open. Adam is lying on his stomach a few feet away, watching with wide eyes. The Venum is standing next to me with its big tongue hanging out like a dog. Its fangs are completely gone and its color has changed to white.
I look at it with fear. Is it going to eat me?
Adam gets up and tries to get closer to me but the Venum hisses at him. Well not exactly hiss; it's something between a hiss and a growl. I stare at it, frozen in fear.
Its fur is pushed away from its eyes by the wind and a pair of big black eyes stare right back at me. It's actually kind of adorable. It retracts its tail and it rolls behind its back. It's not long but it's long enough to look like a snail shell when it rolls.
It looks at me with those wide adorable eyes, panting with its tongue out.
I blink. What do I do?
"Evin." I turn to look at Adam. That earns him a hiss/growl from the Venum. He decides to ignore it. "Your eye." He touches his own eye as if to show me where it is.
I look down at my feet. The Venum retracts its huge tongue back into its mouth and whines. I look at it and it looks back sadly.
I raise my hand to pet it, even though Adam says not to. I slowly put my hand on its head and it starts purring. It closes its eyes and gets closer to me, rubbing itself to my side. I smile and scratch between its eyes. It purrs louder.
"What the..." I look back at Adam. He looks utterly shocked. I think he might have a heart attack.
"Um..." I try to think of a way to explain this but come on blank. Even I don't know what's going on.
Adam shakes his head, in denial and sits on the ground close to me. That earns another hiss/growl from the cute little Venum.
It takes a while for me to notice that the pain in my back has subsided. I smile.
I turn to Adam. "It's ok, I think." The Venum makes a strange noise, as if agreeing with me. "I think we can either go back and get our stuff or just stay here till the morning."
Adam raises an eyebrow. "What are you?"
I frown at him. "What are you?"
"I asked you first."
"And I asked you second. Now respond."
"Not until you do."
I groan and the Venum takes it as a bad sign and its color changes to a dark red. It looks at Adam and starts hissing.
Adam frowns at it and narrows his eyes making the Venum get ready to charge at him but I take the little creature in my arms, stopping it from doing so. The little Venum doesn't seem so little anymore when I hold it. It hardly fits into my arms.
Adam, seeing the Venum so angry, brings his hands up in surrender and turns to me. "Keep your pet in control."
I narrow my eyes at him but don't say anything. I don't want the Venum to get madder.
"So... you were saying." I smirk. Adam frowns.
"If I tell you, will you promise not to tell anyone?"
"Only if you do the same, fallen."
He stiffens. "How did you...?" He opens and closes his mouth a few times like a fish out of water but before he can say anything, though, the little Venum stiffens and keeps looking around frantically as if searching for something. After a few seconds he stares at a certain spot up the road and its ears flatten against his head as he starts his usual growling/hissing.
