Chapter 23 (Jax's P.O.V)

I don't know when I realized I liked her, maybe when the other kids started bullying her, maybe when I saw the rain drops roll down her face on an clouded morning while she was dancing, maybe when she went out in the forest to hunt to help her family.

Or just maybe when I saw her ruby like eyes, shining in the night as she hummed a lullaby while being partially covered by the moonlight.

I almost failed to recognize her the first day of the simulation when I saw her stand beside Masov and Nila, it had been a while since I last saw Masov and I could see him struggling to try to find me discreetly in the crowd.

Makya had changed her usual dark black hair color for a chocolate like brown, although it fitted her well, I still preferred her dark hair that remembered me of the night sky that was often visible in the mountains.

I didn't expect for her to recognize me, but I could see with her reactions that she had had yesterday that she indeed had recognized me. I do acknowledge that her hatred is partially reasonable, after all, I do play an active role in it, but I couldn't stop myself from making her remember me.

I simply couldn't stand seeing her with Reain and I couldn't stop myself from revealing some of my aura, I knew it was one of the only things that would remind her of me.

I would rather she hated me than loved or even appreciated him, I just couldn't bare it, even the thought of him looking at her made me burn.

I could at least reassure myself that he wasn't the one holding her against him as she was trying to put herself in danger.

I was, I was and no one else.

When I stopped her from confronting Krul, I knew she was going to hate me even more, what I didn't know was that she was going to use my past to try do make me hate her in return, if only it had worked. At least I would've been able to live a peaceful life without having her on my mind, but Ioas knows I couldn't, she had bewitched me with the first glance full of hatred she had landed on me.

I could see Krul killing the poor lad that hadn't been able to defend himself properly, but the one thing that I knew was that I couldn't let Makya put herself in danger to kill a man that was mine and only mine to kill.

He had killed most of our group while they were out hunting, we didn't realize it until it was too late, he and his group had followed us in the mountains as we tried to find Skisla flowers, with sheer luck we were able to find a plant in a random cave covered with plants and with a waterfall in the middle, it shined as brightly as the stars in the sky as we approached it.

To access it, we climbed for a few minutes on the rock walls, the smell of the plants covered the air as our hand became wet from the humidity covering the walls, as we climbed, we could feel our hands slipping and failing to keep a solid grip on the rocks.

We knew that if we stopped moving our hands would give up and we would die, most of us made it up, sadly Kalef failed to maintain his grip and as we realized it, we all tried to reach for him, but no one was able to.

The others looked away as my gaze stuck with him, I continued to watch as his eyes lost all the shimmer that used to animate them as he made us all laugh. Beside me Gyua let out a sob as she continued to climb, she had gotten quite attached to Kalef.

I couldn't quite understand how they had gotten to know each other in such a small time, but his lost truly seemed to have affected her.

I couldn't get the last look his face ever created out of my head, it was a mix of despair and anguish that fade to sadness as he looked over to Gyua, only then did I manage to look away for the slim moment of the impact.

I looked over to to see a tear rolling down her face as her hands bled from the force she was using to prevent falling like Kalef had done a few moments ago.

He stayed quite during the fall and even upon his impact with the ground not even the slightest sound of pain left him mouth.

As I looked down, I saw him leaving our world, I could only wish that the creators many put their fates in actually existed and would be there to give him a good reincarnation, one where he could live a life without any pain and where he could live longer than nineteen years.

Arrived at the top, we filled our bottles with the water of the waterfall, seated next to the waterfall, I could feel small drops of water landing on my arms, we all stayed in silence for a few minutes staring into the pit in which Kalef had just fallen in five minutes ago.

Memories of him laughing and awkwardly talking with Gyua came back to haunt my mind as I closed my eyes that night.

The next day, we went back down and carried his body to the next river we could find, we enveloped him with leaves just like the people living in the East of the kingdom did for their loved ones, we knew far well that his body wasn't going to be given back to his family as no one except the ones that had actively done the simulation could know what happened and that the risk of an outsider or an younger person finding out what happened was to high.

The breeze accompanied his body as what he had left of aura made his body float on top of the water, after a while, the aura ran out and his body began to slowly sink in the turquoise water.

From the ten people we were in the beginning, only five of us were left, the others had been killed by Krul or natural occurrences such as a fall or the claw of a Flaim.

We traveled for a few days before hearing noises, we followed the noises only to find out that it was another group. They didn't seem to have been attacked by Krul as they were still ten, they probably didn't even know that Krul was killing other contestants to give him a shot at becoming one of the pack leaders at Witherlore.

What he didn't realize was that under no circumstances would I let him take what was mine.

I would not be the only one in four generation to fail at becoming a leader or even worst failing to become the Sunriser, my future had been carved in stone and nothing or nobody could destroy it.

I would do anything to become the Sunriser, even lose the respect of everyone close to me as it meant being recognized as the one with the more powerful aura in my cohort.
