Chapter 12

I waited a few hours so that I would be sure not to crack again, but I couldn't bare to go back right now, I could bare the judgement but not the fear, not the resentment and the horror that would paint their faces if they same me as a truly was. I managed to find the same herbs I had used the other day, and tried at the same time to find I could stay for the night. I found a tree that appeared to have been struck by lightning and decided to stay there for the night, I would try to look for Skisla in the morning, after all, I couldn't go back to the cavern after last night with nothing to bring back. The sky was covered with stars, but none of them seemed right, I guess sleep was going to win me over, because the blue sky, the sparkling stars and the croissant like moon were all getting fussy and the stars started blinking, which I believe isn't totally normal. I could feel my consciousness slipping away from me as I closed my eyes hoping for tomorrow to be better.

From the moment I opened my eyes, I could feel that something was wrong, firstly, the sun hadn't risen but I could feel I had slept more than I needed to, which pointed to something being wrong. Secondly, I couldn't see either the said sun or the moon in the sky, I tried climbing up what was left of the burnt tree, but as I got higher up, I couldn't see anything. I nevertheless, heard the hoofs of a pack of Flaims running in my direction, I knew very well that if I stayed here, the tree wouldn't hold on to the assault and I would be crushed to death. I picked up some herbs from the grounds, not caring which ones and I ran as if my life depended on it, since, well it kind of did. I didn't care as my lungs seemed to be burning and that my legs, still tired from yesterday, felt like they were on the verge of the breaking point. I could see in the distance Rya and Vreia guarding the cave as they probably assumed their night shift hadn't ended. I didn't know if they could see me coming from this distance, but the one thing I knew was that we needed to block the entrance of the cavern, otherwise some of the Flaims would probably end up in the cave, since they had seemed to have lost all their sense of orientation due to the strange meteorological phenomenon that was happening. They would probably try to stay close to the noise, and we too did noise just by breathing, that they could assimilate to the sounds of their pack. As I came closer to them, Vreia and Rya's expressions switched as to harbor a confused expression, probably due to the fact that I was running like my life depended on it, but that they didn't see any cause for it. Rya seemed to be the first one to hear the noise and she appeared to have said something to Vreia, she looked over my shoulder and her face became covered with terror. We all knew we could die because of some stupid animals being afraid, but at the same time we couldn't really blame them as they were just as hopeless in this situation as us. Vreia disappeared inside the cavern and Khail appeared next to her, he looked at what she was pointing, me or the Flaims I wasn't sure, but he started immediately transformed and came running towards me, he nodded strangely, and I guessed it meant I could climb on his back. As soon as I was on his back he started running towards the cave. I could see the others activating themselves trying to break the rocks near the cavern into pieces to cover the entrance. Upon arriving at the cave, I jumped down Khail's back and took a hatchet that way laying near the said entrance and started breaking in big pieces the rocks near me. The only thing we could hear for the next 5 minutes was the hoofs of the Flaims and the hatchets breaking the rocks. As I stopped mining, I realized most of the rocks around us were broken and that the noises of the hoofs became closer and closer. We all looked at each other and without a noise nodded as to agree we should now assemble something resembling a door. We brought all the rocks to the entrance and started making a pile from the inside. As I passed next to Reain to put down a rock, I whispered; I'm sorry, I didn't know if he heard it, but I wasn't going to repeat myself, I might seem stubborn, but apologizing was not something I did often, and I had no intention of making become recurrent.

We finished assembling the rocks, but doing so, we blocked every possible light that could've remained outside. We could try to go down in the waterfall cavern, but we had no way of insuring a safe passage there. I sat down next to my so-called bed and realized I still had some of the plants I had grabbed earlier, none of them were visible in the dark, so I left them next to my bed as I laid down from exhaustion. I could feel that the others had done the same, and before closing my eyes I heard someone murmur: "I get it don't worry."

Waking up the next morning, I remembered something about the herbs I had picked up yesterday, they had spots on them. Spots that only one flower would have. As I rushed to look at them to validate my feeling only to find Helaena and Geros perched upon them with smiles that could illuminates the whole cavern, they turned toward me and asked simultaneously;

"Is this what we think it is?" They looked at me with hope I only normally saw in children when their parents came back from the market, hoping for a surprise treat."

I responded a smile just as big as theirs spreading on my face:

"I think it is!"

We all started laughing and waking up the others so they could hear the news, we were safe! Completely safe! The ones in the group which didn't originally come from aristocracy had hope glimmering in their eyes as they realized, they might make it into Witherlore and that they actually have a chance to access the aristocratic class. As for the others, we sigh out in realize that we wouldn't be the ones to make out lines fall from the aristocratic class to the commoner's class, or at least we didn't for now. We would just have to find the spot I had ended up yesterday morning and we could find more Skisla, or at least in theory.

We still had to unbury ourselves if I could say it like that, since we were stuck behind a fake rocky door that served as well as protection as it did as a prison. We took one piece out at the time and after approximately five minutes we were done, it had taken us thirty minutes to built, but one a sixth of that time, isn't strange of destruction could happen in the blink of an eye but it could take years to create something, even if it wasn't considered useful or beautiful.

I could still feel the stairs that Geros and Eisma gave me, I didn't want to confront their accusing gazes. I knew far well that I had been in the wrong when I cracked, but I also knew that I couldn't have stopped it and that I had done all I could to prevent myself from hurting them. I wasn't proud, but I wasn't ashamed as it wasn't something I had done on purpose to hurt Reain, my body had reacted on its own and my mind had stopped my body before any real harm could be done. I did think I owed Reain excuses which I did give him and that he kind of accepted and that closed it, at least it closed it on my part. I couldn't stop them from judging me or looking at me like I had lost my mind, after all, I sort of did lose it just not to the level they were thinking of.

I decided to volunteer to go refill our water bottles as I couldn't deal with their eyes that were concerned, but also afraid, as if I was a ticking bomb that could explode on them at any second. As much as I hated to admit it, they were right, I had been a ticking bomb ever since I first changed forms, I had been suspected of being a Dakler as it took me a long time to manifest an aura and even more to transform. But when I finally did, all they saw was a monster, a cursed child, an abomination. I wanted peace and they gave me chaos, so I adapted just not the way they wanted. I learned to thrive in chaos, to train my aura to protect me at any cost, even my humanity. The saw it as a defiance to the church and I saw it as my rebirth, I broke the glass box in which they had placed me in and got called a villain. They never even though that they were the ones that created the one thing they feared the most, I didn't want to hurt them, I wanted to make them understand what it was like to hurt, just like they did with me. One thing was sure, if they expected to be able to hurt me without me replicating, they were wrong. I would never let them go unpunished, the bullies ended up in the same box they had placed me in, except they wouldn't be able to get out like I did.

The last thing they had seen was my eyes before they fell into a deep slumber that would make them regret hurting me when I was trying to become their friend. Those who showed me mercy received mercy, but those who gave me hell received it as well. Those who pretended to be ignorant, this time seemed to want to know everything, but strangely they don't understand why others would pretend to know nothing when they got mysteriously hurt.
