Chapter One

Grover Jones sprinted down the hall away from the loose freak, feeling his heart pound against his chest. Grover ran into a room and jumped over the desk, before running out into a back hallway. Grover heard the freak behind him and pushed himself to run faster.

Grover had time to glance behind him before he rammed right into someone. The momentum sent him flying backwards onto his back and he looked up at the stranger standing in the middle of the hallway.

The man was dressed in a baby blue hazmat suit, with no mask and he had a radio and a pack slung across his back. The man had brown hair, blue eyes and had a gun in his hand, a silencer screwed on.

Grover snapped his head around when he saw the freak running towards him and he panicked, scrambling to his feet and backing away. The man raised the gun and fired a shot at the freak. The bullet penetrated its brain and it fell a couple feet away from Grover and the man.

Grover stared at the freaks body, knowing that he had once been human before slowly lifting his head to meet the man's eyes. The guy was staring down at him, a blank expression on his face.

"John Collins." The man introduced himself. "I'm here to help."

Grover's eyes flickered down to the dead freak and back up to this Collins guy. "Thanks..." Grover said hesitantly.

"Are you here alone?" John asked.

Grover shook his head. "No. I'll take you to the others."

Grover began walking towards the common room where they had been using as sleeping quarters. If only his sister Mary had made it one more week, they would both be getting out of here. But when you're bitten, the bite only takes six hours to transform you.

Grover entered the room, with a smile on his face. Everyone turned to look at him and he said, "Guys this is John Collins....we're getting out of here!"

Diesel had an expression of disbelief on his face. "Are you serious? We're really getting out of here?"

John nodded and said, "My team will be here in thirty minutes which should give you enough time to pack your stuff. Before we do that," Collins pulled a clipboard out of his pack. "I need your names."

Grover stepped forward and told the man his name. "Grover Jones."

Collins' head snapped up and his eyes settled on Grover's face and he stared at him for real this time. Grover saw something in the man's eyes. A flicker of recognition? A flicker of realization and disappointment? He wasn't sure but he didn't like it. It was making him nervous.

At this point everyone was watching the man strangely. "Do you know Grover?" Barrett demanded.

Collins looked away from Grover and said, "No."

Grover watched him because he somehow knew he was lying. It was in his voice and the way he wasn't making eye contact. Grover decided not to say anything about it though and he met Barrett's eyes.

"Grover can I talk to you for a sec?" Barrett asked, inclining his head towards the door.

Grover glanced around at Natalie, Violet, Diesel, Noodle and Zoe and shrugged in answer. "Sure." Grover followed Barrett out of the room and into the hallway. "What is it?"

"You can't honestly believe he's here to help us? I mean he shows up here without any backup and nothing but one hazmat suit and expects us to what...walk right out of here? If we even breathe a whiff of that air outside we're as good as dead." Barrett told him.

Grover frowned at him trying to see his point but he just couldn't. It didn't make sense. He shook his head. "I don't know what's up with you or what's going on in your mind right now but we're getting out of here man."

"He's here to kill us Grover! Don't you get it?! The chemical plant explosion, the toxic gas, him showing up right after we sent LeShawn out there to find help....we lost contact with LeShawn two hours before this guy showed up. Don't you see the connection?!"

Grover backed away from Barrett shaking his head in disbelief. "Look, whatever your paranoid psychotic theories are....I want no part of it man."

Grover started to walk back into the room but Barrett grabbed his wrist and spun him around, slamming him against the lockers. Grover stared at Barrett in shock and surprise not moving.

"I'm not crazy." He whispered in his ear, causing Grover to shiver slightly. "I know he's here to kill us and I won't let that happen. Not to you."

Grover stared at him confused. What the hell was he talking about? Barrett was becoming a little terrifying. Grover realized that he was way too close and he shoved Barrett backwards.

"What the hell are you talking about?"

Barrett smirked. "You'll find out soon enough. Until then...I have to stop Collins."

Grover watched him run down the hallway and disappear around a corner. He had never felt this confused about anything before...other than the chemical plant explosion of course.

Grover walked back into the room with his head hanging low and his eyes filled with a confusion and worry. He felt everyone's eyes on him and he sat down on the lounge couch, sighing in frustration and rubbing his face.

"He's lost his mind." Grover told them. "He thinks you're here to kill us.

Diesel, Zoe and Natalie stared at him while Violet turned to look at Collins. "Are you here to kill us?"

Collins scoffed and shook his head. "No. If that were the case a) I wouldn't have saved Grover from a freak and b) you'd all be dead already."

Grover threw his hands up in the air and made an exasperated noise. "I knew it."

"Where did Barrett go anyway?" Natalie asked.

"No idea other than him saying he had to stop Collins." Grover said. He stood up. "But I'm going to go look for him before he does anything stupid....like get himself killed."

Collins nodded and strapped his pack onto his back again and said, "I'll help you."

"The rest of you pack up."
