Chapter Eight

Dabi woke with a start not realizing he'd managed to fall asleep out in the open as he'd been watching over Cora. It looked as if someone had tried to make him more comfortable without moving him as he had a blanket draped over him and a pillow under his head. He glanced around the barren living room and felt a moment of panic as he didn't see any sign of Cora. As he leapt to his feet, Giran stepped into the living room and spotted the panic on Dabi's face.

"She's out back. I don't think she gets out very much, she really seemed to want to sit outside." Giran noted.

Dabi nodded his head, appreciating the information he'd offered and headed to the back door. It opened up to a small creaky porch, there was a small patch of fresh green grass that led to a surrounding forest keeping the place concealed from curious eyes. He relaxed as he spotted Cora lying in the plush grass. She was wearing some fresh clothes, a comfy pair of leggings and a long grey tank top. Her eyes were open staring blindly upward, a sign that she probably wasn't here.

Quietly Dabi hopped off the porch and went to sit next to her in the grass. She had some color back and looked to be feeling better. Gently he reached out and brushed a stray lock of white hair out of her face causing her to startle. He smiled as she jumped and let out a cute squeak of surprise before he felt the familiar feeling of someone looking down on him. He glanced upward and waved before looking down to see Cora smiling.

"You're awake." She smiled.

Dabi nodded, "you look like you're feeling better."

"Giran gave me some antibiotics and something else that at first made me think I was melting but now I feel like I'm floating on clouds." She giggled.

Dabi held back a laugh, he must have given her some strong pain killers. "Ah, he gave you the good stuff."

Cora giggled again and reached for him, "make grass angels with me?"

Dabi couldn't help but shake his head in silent laughter, "I'm not sure that's a thing but sure." He laid back in the soft plush grass next to her and chuckled as she flapped her arms as if she were trying to make snow angels in the grass.

"Come on, it feels all fun and tickly." Cora giggled as her fingers moved over the soft grass.

Dabi sighed and joined her in her drug induced lunacy. His hand bumped into hers and caught it, halting their flapping. He wasn't sure why he'd caught her hand and looked to their interlocked hands curiously. He remembered that she'd been hungry before and spoke up, "did you get something to eat?"

Cora nodded, "Giran made sandwiches." She smiled, "they were really good."

Dabi gently squeezed her hand in his, "that's good." He sat up and felt Cora looking on him from above. "I'm going to get something to eat, are you okay out here for a bit?"

Cora nodded again and Dabi reluctantly released her hand. He made his way back toward the safe house. As he stepped onto the porch and reached for the door it opened outward on its own. He jumped and looked up to see Giran standing in the doorway extending a sandwich to him. Dabi accepted it with a soft mumbled 'thanks' before returning to the grass.

It seemed like Cora was gone again, her eyes were open but he didn't sense her watchful presence above. He smiled and sat quietly in the grass next to her. He ate his sandwich in silence as Giran went back inside, though he'd likely never admit it to Giran, it was a really good sandwich.

Cora extended her hand outward as if she were trying to touch whatever she was seeing, there was a small ghost of a smile on her lips. Dabi grabbed a long blade of grass and tickled the tips of her fingers with it causing her to let out a squeal of laughter. He felt her watchful gaze overhead and chuckled softly to himself.

"I thought you left." She pouted.

"I guess café Giran does delivery." He shrugged causing her to giggle again. "Where did you go?"

Cora smiled, "one of my favorite places."

"Where's that?" Dabi asked curiously as he laid in the grass beside her once more.

"The Amazon, there're jaguars there." She smiled.

"Do they notice when you visit too?"

"Sometimes." Cora smiled as she remembered one little cub that would always try to swat at the sky whenever she'd look in on him.

The back door opened and Giran poked his head outside, "hey, I think you two should see this."

Dabi helped Cora to her feet and into the safe house. Giran led them to the living room. The small TV was playing some kind of True Crime special about Cora's father. Cora couldn't see the screen from her vantage point and had to rely on hearing alone. It sounded like there was a host who was taking in question callers.

"Next caller." His buttery voice sounded from the TV.

There was a brief crack as if whoever called in had terrible reception, "you've got it all wrong, he wasn't a monster, he only killed bad people! Didn't you see that news story about that old lady he'd murdered, she used to lure homeless people to her home and eat them. He was a hero-."

"Oh, great another serial killer fanboy, get a real hobby." The host sighed and the caller was dropped.

Cora felt her heart stutter in her chest. Her father told her, what he'd done was for her to make the world a safer and better place for her. Had he only murdered hidden criminals?

"Next caller." The host recovered.

There was another crack, it was the same guy, "and his wife, if you look back through child protective service records, she tried to drown their infant daughter! Stop painting him as a monst-."

Cora let out a gasp. Her mother tried to drown her? Is that why her father murdered her?

"Block this guy's number." The host growled.

Dabi scribbled the caller's info down, knowing Cora couldn't see the screen and handed it to her. "We can find this guy, if you want." He said softly. "So, you can hear more."

"You two aren't going anywhere, not yet, there are police everywhere looking for her and not to mention she really shouldn't be going anywhere in her current condition, drugs or not." Giran pointed.

Dabi looked over at the scrawny girl with the shoulder length teal hair. His gaze was drawn to the white locks that framed her face, telltale signs of all the trauma she'd been through. He frowned slightly, Giran was right, she was in no condition to be traipsing around trying to learn more about her father from someone who admired him.

Realizing Dabi felt torn about wanting to help her out now rather than waiting she offered him a small smile, "its okay, it can wait. It's just good to know that there's someone else out there who doesn't think he was a monster."

"Who knows, maybe he helped inspire the elusive Hero Killer." Giran lit a cigarette and took a drag off it, relaxing as he realized Cora and Dabi weren't going to rush off and get themselves caught.

Cora had heard a little about the hero killer from some of the police and heroes she'd been forced to work with. They of course only saw him as a monster, like her father. She saw Dabi tilt his head back, to meet her 'gaze'. From the expression on his face at the mention of the Hero Killer she got the feeling he was someone Dabi admired.

"I haven't heard much about him, aside from the police and heroes, they didn't really have anything kind to say about him." She piped up softly.

Dabi smirked, "of course they wouldn't he targets false heroes. They're all probably worried they're next since they're all corrupt."

Cora nodded; she'd seen enough of that world to know the majority of them were awful. She hadn't had very many pleasant interactions with police or heroes. She wondered if Dabi wished the Hero Killer would target his father but didn't voice her thought as she knew he probably hadn't shared his origin with Giran. Even though Giran seemed nice and had taken care of them, she wasn't sure how he'd feel if he knew the truth.

The fun swimmy feeling from the drugs Giran had given her was starting to wear off. She slipped to her knees as the pain of her injuries began to return. Dabi knelt beside her and swept her into his arms. He frowned, she was trembling, the pain was almost too much for her. Giran frowned as he realized the pain killers had worn off already. He got to his feet and headed for the kitchen to retrieve her second dose of antibiotics and pain killers and a glass of water.

"Here. She's probably ready for a second dose." He dropped the pills into Dabi's hand and set the glass of water on the ground next to them before stepping away to give them some privacy.

Dabi placed an arm around Cora careful not to touch any of her wounds and leaned her back against him. He helped her get the pills into her mouth before lifting the glass of water to her lips. She weakly took enough water to help her get the pills down before wincing and slumping against him. He held her close waiting for her pain to subside.

After a few minutes she let out a soft hiss of pain, he assumed this was the part where she felt like she was melting, which meant she'd start to feel pain free soon. After another a few minutes he felt her body relax against him.

"No more melting?" He pondered.

Cora giggled as the drugs took effect, "nope, done melting, now I feel floaty."

Dabi chuckled softly and smoothed her hair out of her face, "that's good. More grass angels?"

Cora beamed, "can we?"

"If you want." He helped her to her feet and smiled as she bounded for the back door.

They went to lay in the soft grass and soak in the sun's warm rays. Cora closed her eyes and enjoyed the fun fuzzy feeling in her head and the tickly warm rays across her skin. Dabi laid on his side next to her trying to offer her a little shade so her fair skin wouldn't burn. He was curious what his asshole of a father was up to but didn't want to ask her to check in on him, he knew his father had been a source of some of her trauma and didn't want to upset her.

He jumped as she suddenly poked him on the forehead, "what you thinking about?" Cora asked with a giggle, despite having her eyes closed she managed to avoid poking his eye out.

"What that asshole is doing right now." He grumbled.

"I can check." Cora offered softly.

"If it will tire you out, I'd rather you didn't."

Cora smiled, "it's okay." Her cloudy white eyes opened and her vision shifted to what looked like a police precinct. Endeavor was standing with a handful of his sidekicks in a police precinct. It was hard for her to see the information on the board they were looking at but she spotted two police folders lying open on the table next to Endeavor. There were photos of the officers that had attacked her the night before. They were looking for her and had asked Endeavor to help. She blanched slightly. "At the police station, helping them look for me."

Dabi clenched his fists, bright blue flames sprang to life engulfing his hands, "he can try." His voice came out in a threatening growl.

Cora focused back on them and frowned when she saw the fire around his hands. She reached for his hand, "don't, it hurts you."

His flames dispersed leaving a few more burns on his already scarred skin. It was hard to tell where one burn began and another ended. His body was now a scorched canvas. He caught her hand in his, numb to the pain. "It's worth it if I cremate any of those assholes in the process."

Cora gave his hand a gentle squeeze, "well none of them are here now, so don't hurt yourself, please."
