Prologue
Eyes cold like ice but blazing like a fire. Something about it felt comforting but it also made you freeze up in fear. Seeming so mean but really just protective. It intrigued you. He was always so cold towards you, yet you didn't mind that at all. Was this the way it would always be between you and the ultimate life form known as Shadow the hedgehog? A part of you didn't care if it did.
Blinking back to reality, you glanced over at a picture of Shadow the Hedgehog on the wall. Living in the Space Colony Ark with your grandfather and sister Maria did get lonely a lot, but you'd remind yourself that you weren't alone. There were always several scientists to talk to, but they never really understood. Shadow always was either staring out a window to look down at the planet or was with Maria. He didn't seem to notice you much. You didn't expect him to. He was going to save Maria. Not you.
You spent a lot of time in your room while on the Ark. If there was one thing you hated, however, it was the silence. In your mind, the silence was just another thing to remind you that your sister Maria was the only reason anyone was there. Who cared at all about you? It wasn't like you had a life-threatening illness that needed to be cured. Maria was here being quarantined because apparently, that was her case. She didn't have any symptoms and you didn't get her disease for some reason when around her. There were many mysteries that dwelled there on the Ark. For some reason, you thought they might all tie into Shadow somehow.
Knock knock...
"Huh? A visitor?! That almost never happens!" your voice chirped happily for the distraction. Your sister Maria opened the door. Shadow stood behind her looking as he always did.
"(Y/N)! Goodness, it's been a long time, hasn't it?" your sister asked. Her golden hair shimmered in the dim light of your room and her blue eyes danced brilliantly despite how vulgar the room looked. She always gave people life where she went. This was ironic because she gave people life and was almost doomed to die by an illness.
"Yeah, it has!" you said embracing her tightly. "I get lonely stuck in here when you're out with grandpa to do your tests and check-ups. I spend most of my time drawing and singing to myself in here... With all this time on my hands, I've come up with some new games we can play together!" You glanced over at Shadow who was standing behind Maria. "Don't suppose Shadow would mind playing the handsome prince now, would he?" you asked.
Maria giggled at the thought. "He'd make a very manly prince!"
Shadow hardly acknowledged your suggestion. Maria turned and knelt down to his level warmly. "Oh, come on! It'll be fun! Besides, I'd be surprised if you admitted you'd rather sit in a quiet doctor's office for hours on end than to play a small game with us...," she told him with a sad glimmer in her blue eyes at the thought of going back for more tests.
Shadow's red, lashing eyes seemed to break for a moment at her suggestion. He heaved a sigh. "Fine... Not like you're giving me much choice."
You liked it when Shadow agreed to participate in one of your games. The games you came up with were more roleplay a lot of times rather than games. You'd assign everyone a role and then it'd continue on from there. Today, it was a story about a hero, a princess, and an evil witch. Because you knew Shadow was Maria's companion, you'd usually set them together in your roleplays. That usually left one role, the villain. You'd almost always make yourself the villain of your stories. Nothing pleased you more than to see how they'd work together to defeat you. Sure enough, they'd beat you again and again. The dynamic duo never lost to you. This time was no exception.
"Mwah ha ha! You'll never get the antidote to revive your precious princess, Prince Shadow! I shall take her power and become the ruler of this universe and you'll be forced to bow under my scepter!" you shouted.
Shadow stood over the "dead" princess whom he had once "loved" (they were just pretending). His eyes burned with sadness and anger at her "death". "HOW COULD YOU?! You fiend... You took away the only one who ever mattered to me!" Shadow yelled spitting the words off of his tongue.
Cackling devilishly, you ran down the hall with a baton which was your wand and a pot which contained the "antidote" that would heal Maria. Shadow tore after you making sure to go much slower knowing that everyone was still just acting. Finally, he caught up with you and tackled you to the ground. You yelled in surprise and toppled down. The baton skidded across the floor and the pot almost came crashing down! Thankfully, Shadow caught the pot just in time. Fearfully, you turned and faced Shadow. "H-How did you catch me?! I was going much faster than you were for sure!"
"Never underestimate your enemy," Shadow replied. Getting off of both you and the floor, he looked longingly back down the hallway at Maria. She was still flopped over onto the ground. It looked more like she was sleeping there in reality. Just as Shadow was about to race back, however...
Rapid footsteps came down the hall. Shadow's ears perked and he quickly put away the pot. When he came back, Gerald Robotnik was running up to Maria. "Maria! What happened?! Why are you passed out on the floor?! Oh dear... I knew I should've kept a closer eye on you...," he told her when he finally reached her side.
Like a magic spell being lifted, she opened her eyes from the floor. "Hi, grandpa! Don't worry! I was just playing with Shadow and (y/n). I was the princess who was dramatically killed and Prince Shadow was just about to retrieve the antidote to revive me!" she explained.
Gerald never really understood the games you'd play. If anything, he was against them completely. The doctor inhaled deeply and helped her back to her feet. "Maria... You know as well as I do that you're in no condition to play these games... I understand that you're young and restless, but you must understand that games like these... they're a danger to you. If you're put under too much stress, you may get worse. I'm sorry, but you should stick with something less... eventful," he explained calmly. He turned towards Shadow. "Shadow, will you accompany us to the x-ray room?" Gerald asked politely.
"Certainly," Shadow replied dropping his princely character completely.
"Again...?" whined Maria as she got a look of annoyance on her face.
"Come on, Maria. It's for your own good."
As the two walked away with Shadow in tow, you felt your loneliness and sadness again. They completely ignored you! Maria and Shadow didn't even say goodbye! Did they ever think about you? What you wanted? Apparently not. Disappointed, you trudged back to your room to try and think up more games and draw more pictures.
At this time, you and Maria were seven.
A few years more went by and things remained like this... but were only more lonely. Maria didn't even come to visit you anymore. She was being kept in the containment area full-time now. Shadow stayed with her. One time you tried to mix things up by visiting them yourself, but you just got yelled at by lots of people.
Your skin was snow white from lack of sunlight and it almost scared you to look in a mirror. People used to ask if you'd seen a ghost. There was no ghost, but you sure did look like one sometimes.
A few lonely years went by... when it happened. At first, you thought it was just a dream when you saw men in black uniforms flocking the Ark from a space shuttle outside in the dark blackness of space. Men in lab coats raced to and from the research rooms. The doors opened and closed as frantic shouts were exchanged from one to another. In the commotion, you were able to sneak in without anyone finding you.
On the other side of the room, you saw Maria huddled in a corner trying her best to hide from everyone. Having not seen your sister in years, you rushed over to her. "Maria!" you shouted.
Her dazzling blue eyes filled with fear looked up to you. Familiarity filled her senses. "(Y/N)?" Maria asked quietly. She was unable to get her answer because the men in black uniforms barged into the room.
"FREEZE! Put your hands up! All of you!" shouted the man in charge.
Quickly, you squeezed in beside Maria in the cramped corner. Looking over, you saw a door you could escape from to the next long maze of research rooms. Inconspicuously, you began to enter the passcode to the door. It was the same as all the other passcodes on the Ark.
The scientists were being escorted by weapons out of the room. With hands behind their heads and faces of defeat, they followed the men without hesitation. The last man was about to go scout the room when he saw the door open mysteriously on its own. He walked over to the corner and saw you with your hand pressing the final button for the passcode.
"What-?!" he bellowed drawing his gun from its holster.
Just as the man slung the gun towards the two of you, you dragged Maria to her feet and shoved her ahead of you. "RUN MARIA!" you shouted. Loud gunshots fired in the room and barely missed you. The blood from your face drained when you realized the situation. You raced after Maria as fast as you could never staying in one place for long.
"STOP! Freeze and do as I tell you! No one needs to be hurt!" the man shouted to the both of you.
You looked up to see Maria open the door to Shadow's containment unit. Yes! Shadow could save everyone! Surely he, the ultimate life form, would be able to do something! She fled inside and you quickly barged in just as she shut the door. You were always the fastest sibling and Maria would never be able to beat you in a race without a head start. She knew this was simply another race.
"(Y/N)! What do we do?! This door can't hold them off forever!" Maria cried looking around.
"Wake up Shadow from the capsule thingy! We can escape to Earth from the pod!" you told her.
Quickly and efficiently, you raced to ready the escape pod and Maria initiated the wake-up sequence for Shadow. Just as you got the pod ready, you stepped inside to check for air leaks, cracks, or anything potentially dangerous. It was your fatal mistake to step inside that pod.
The door slammed shut behind you just as the men finally blasted into the room with their guns. Locked inside, you banged on the wall separating you from your sister. Her hands were wrapped around a large ejection lever and her eyes were fixed defiantly on the intruders.
"Young miss..., you don't have any idea what you're doing... Now listen, there are two ways this can end. Either you let go of that lever and we all leave quietly, or I pull the trigger. I'm sure you can understand why we don't like option two, right?" a man said.
Her voice quivered, but you couldn't help but marvel at her bravery. "(Y/N), take care of Shadow for me... Fulfill my dream... of visiting this planet... and living a normal life... Maybe one day, you can forgive me for deceiving you, sister!" Maria shouted as she pulled the lever.
"NO! MARIA, NO! It's not supposed to be you! It's supposed to be-!" Your voice was cut off by the sound of a gunshot and the sound of the escape pod and capsule being launched into space. Tears welled up in your eyes. You hadn't seen your sister in years! And this...
Was the last time you ever saw her.
Once your sorrows were fully drowned by your agony, you curled up on the floor helplessly. Stuck in the dark misery and despair of being lost in space, you slowly drifted to a restless sleep that provided no comfort. Everything was taken away from you in less than a day.
If it was anything, to begin with...
There was only one thing saved from the disaster that occurred on the Ark. Shadow the hedgehog.
