Chapter 6: Adventure with Mom and Dad
Emily
"I thought we'd be in the Vegas era, you know the grr, chest hair." Mom complained walking out with her pink high-heels, layers of tulle, and her 50's chick gear. I laughed walking out with my scooter. "You are kidding, right? You want to see Elvis you go for the late fifthties. The time with no burgers. When they called him the Pelvis and he still had a waist. What's more you see him in style." Dad commented. "Emily, do you have your helmet?" Dad asked checking my scooter. "Yep right here. I never leave with out it." I replied showing him my helmet in the bag. "You can ride a scooter?" Mom asked smiling. " Yep, started riding it when I was 14." I replied smiling.
"You going my way, doll?" Dad asked smiling. "Is there any other way, daddy-o? Straight from the fridge, man." Mom replied smiling back. "Hey, you speak lingo." Dad commented. "Oh, me, mum, Cliff Richard movies every Bank Holiday Mondays." Mom replied smiling. "I knew your mom would be a Cliff fan." Dad said smiling. We rode around for bit.
"Where we off to?" Rose asked smiling. "Ed Sulivan TV Studios. Elvis did Hound Dog one of the shows. There were lots of complaints. Bit of luck, but we'll just catch it." Dad replied smiling at us. "And that would be Tv Studios, in what, New York?" Mom asked smiling. It's good to see them so sweet after going into a Parallel World, leaving Mickey, meeting her father again, and those blasted Cybermen! I hated them the minute they showed up.
"That's the one." Dad replied smiling. A red bus passed by as we stopped by a red post box then we see union flags between houses. "Ha! Digging the New York vibe." Mom said smiling. "Uhm... Dad, are you sure about where we are? Because this looks like London." I said removing my helmet. "Well this could still be New York. I mean, it looks like London New York , mind." Dad replied smiling. "What are all the flags for?" Mom asked smiling. "There must be a special occasion!" I exclaimed excited.
A TV was being delivered to another house. "There you go, sir. All wired for the great occasion." The man said smiling. "The great occason? What do you mean?" Dad asked frowning. "Where have you been, living out of the Colonies? Coronation, of course." He replied smiling. "What Coronation's that then?" Dad asked frowning again. I sighed. "What do you mean? The Coronation." He replied frowning. Then it hit me... I seriously wish I was in London right now. "Its the Queen's. Queen Elizabeth's." Rose and I said at the same time. "Oh! It's 1953?" Dad asked smiling. "Last time I looked. Time for a lovely bit of pomp and circumstance, what we do best." He replied smiling.
"Look at the TV aerials. Looks like everyone's got one. That's weird. My nan said tellies were so rare eveyone had to cram up in one house to watch." Rose commented. "Not around here, love. Magpie's Marvellous Tellies, only five quid a pop." The man replied smiling. "Oh, but this is a brilliant year. Classic! Technicolor, Everest climbed, everything off the ration. The nation throwing off shadows of war and looking forward to a happier, brighter future." Dad said smiling. "Someone please help me! Ted!" A woman shouted.
I looked at their direction to see two men in black suits bundle a person to the back of the car with a blanket for it's head. "Leave him alone! He's my husband! Please." The woman begged. "What's going on?" Dad asked frowning. A boy comes running out bumping into me. "I'm sorry. Oi, what are you doing?" He asked frowing. "Police buisness. Now please get out of the way, sir." The bishop said walking past us. "Who did they take? Do you know him?" Rose asked concerned. "It must be Mister Gallagher." The boy replied. "Tommy! Not one word! Get in the house!" The man ordered.
"I better do what he says." Tommy said walking towards the house. "All aboard." Dad said driving after the car. "And they leave me again." I mumbled walking towards Mrs. Gallgher's house. "Mrs. Gallagher I pressume." I said smiling. "Y-Yes, that's me. What do you want?" She asked sobbing. "It's best we talk inside." I said walking her in the house. "Mrs. Gallagher. I'm just an inspector undercover. Now will you please tell me why those men got your husband?" I asked sadly showing her my psychic paper. Dad gave me one for my birthday last month. "They think he's a m-monster." She replied sobbing again. I frowned comforting her. "What do you mean, ma'am?" I asked concerned. "He's face... It was gone." She replied sadly. My frown turned to interest.
"Would you mind making tea?" I asked smiling. "Oh, sure." She replied walking towards her kitchen. I stood up and inspected the room. Nothing odd except... What the hell is that? I walked towards the tv to see a pink streak of light going around the TV. "Tea, miss." Mrs. Gallagher said smiling. "Thank you." I said drinking it as fast as I can. "Thank you again, Mrs. Gallagher. You helped a lot in the investigation." I said walking myself out to see Dad and Rose get their helmets off. "Dad! Mom!" I hollered running to them. "I thought we lost you!" Rose said hugging me. "You guys left me." I replied hugging her back. "Where were you anyway?" Dad asked frowning. "FYI, I wasn't just idle. I just went to check on Mrs. Gallagher if she's alright." I replied smiling.
"Very well, lets go ask Tommy some questions." Dad said smiling. We followed him as he knocked on the door. The man from awhile back answered. "Hi!" Mom and Dad said in union. "Good morning, sir." I said smiling. "Who are you, then?' He asked rudely. "Let's see, then. Judging by the look of you, family man, nice house, decent wage, fought in the war, therefore I represent Queen and Country." Dad said showing him his psychic paper. "Just doing a check for Her forthcoming Majesty's subjects before the big day. MInd if I come in? Nah, i didn't think you did. Thank you." Dad said going in. We went in after him.
We walked to the living room. "Not bad. I'd have to compliment you, Mrs?" Dad asked. "Connolly." She replied smiling. "Now then, Rita. I'll handle this. The gentleman's a proper representative. Don't mind the wife. She rattles a lot." He said smiling. "Maybe she should rattle a lot more. I'm convinced you're doing a patriotic duty. Nice flags. Why aren't they flying?" Dad asked frowning. I bit my lip to stop laughing. Poor man. "There we are, Rita. Get them flying. Queen and Country." He said. "I'm sorry." Rita replied sadly. "Get up. Do it now." He ordered. "Hold on a minute." Dad said smiling. "What the gentleman said." He stated as Rita stopped. "Hold on a minute. Mister Connolly, you have two big hand hands. Why don't you do it? Why is it your wife's job?" Dad asked frowning. Oh crud! It's going to erupt soon. "Well it's housework innit." He replied frowning.
"And that's a woman's job?" I asked frowning. "Of course it is." He replied looking at me. "Mister Connolly, what gender is the Queen?" I asked frowning. "Are you telling me that the Queen does her housework?" Dad asked raising a brow. Oh, my! I swear just one more order from Dad or Mom, I'm gonna end up laughing. "No. Not at all." He replied nervous. "Then get busy." Dad ordered. JUST ONE MORE! "Right. Yes, sir. You'll be proud of us, sir. We'll have Union Jacks left, right, and centre." He replied fixing the flags. "Excuse me, Mister Connolly. Hang on a minute. Union Jacks?" Mom asked raising a brow. Oh no... "Yes, that's right isn't it?" He asked confused.
"That's the Union Flag. Union Jack is only if it's at sea." Mom corrected. "Oh sorry. I do apologise." He replied looking down. That was the last draw. I can't stop my laughter now. "What's so funny?" He asked frowning. "Oh *laugh* nothing, sir. I just *laugh* remembered *laugh* something." I replied in between laughs. "Good man. You do that." Mom said smiling. Mom and Dad sat on the sofa. I was about to walk towards the TV, but Dad pulled me down to sit beside him. "Mum went out with a sailor." Mom said smilin. "Oh ho ho ho. I bet she did. Anyway, I'm the Doctor, this is Rose and Emily. And you are?" Dad said smiling.
"Tommy." He replied smiling. "Well, sit yourself down, Tommy. Have a look at this. I love telly, don't you?" Dad asked smiling. "Yeah, I think it's billiant." Tommy replied smiling. "Keep working Mister C! Now why don't you tell me what's wrong?" Dad asked smiling. "Did you say you were a Doctor?" RIta asked worried. I frowned. Something isn't right in this picture... Ah! Got it! Their grandparents. The grand dad could be dead already because of the war and where's the grand mum?
"Yes I am." Dad replied smiling. "Can you help her? Oh, please can you help her?" Rita asked nearing tears. I gulped and stood up. I knew it! "Now then, Rita. The gentleman doesn't need to now." Mister C said frowning. "No, the gentlenman does." Dad said frowning. "Tell us what's wrong and we can help." Mom said comforting RIta as she burst into tears. I handed her some tissue. "I'm sorry. It's alright. Come here. It's okay." Mom said hugging Rita. "Hold on a minute. Queen and country is one thing, but this is my house! What the?" Msiter C said dropping the bundle.
"What the hell am I doing? Now listen here, Doctor. You may have fancy qualifications, but goes on in my roof is my buisness." He stated. I rolled my eyes and put my earphones on. Dad's gonna be pissed any moment now. "A lot of people are being bundled into-" Dad was cut off by Mister C. "I am talking!" He shouted. "And I'm not listening! Now you, Mister Connolly, you are staring in a deep, dark peet of trouble if you don't let me help. So I'm ordering you, sir! Tell me what's going on!" Dad shouted. Everyone grew silent. I removed my earphones and looked up.

"She won't stop. She never stops." He stated. "We started hearing stories, all around the place. People who've changed. Families keeping it secret because they were scared. Then the police started finding it out. We don't know how, no one does. They just turn up, come to the door and take them, any time of the day or night." Tommy informed. "Show me." Dad ordered. Tommy lead us up the stairs and into a dark room. "Gran? It's Tommy. It's alright, Gran. I brought help." Tommy said turning the light on. We saw the lady with no face. No eyes, nose, or mouth. I looked down to see a black car pull up. I had wide eyes. "They found her." I whispered.
"Her face is completely gone." Dad said sadly examining her face with the sonic screwdriver. "Scarcely an electrical impulse left. Almost complete neutral shutdown. She's ticking over. It's like her brain has been wiped clean." Dad said frowning. "What are we gonna do, Doctor? We can't feed her." Tommy said worried. The front door gets broken down. "We've got company." Mom said looking at Dad. "It's them. They've come for her!" Rita said panicking. "Quickly. What was she doing before this happened? Where was she? Tell me. Quickly! Think!" Dad ordered panicking as well. The polive appear. "I can't think! She doesn't leave the house She just-" Tommy was cut off by the police appearing
"Hold on a minute. There are three important, birllirant, and complicated reasons why you should listen to me. One-" Dad was cut off by a punch. It took every ounce of self-control I had in me to stop myself rom punching the police man back. "Doctor!" Mom shouted as Dad collapsed. "Let her go." I ordered. "Who gives you the authority?" The man asked pushing me back making me trip, but Tommy caught me. "Thanks." I said as he helped me up. "Mom, tell Dad when he wakes up that I went ahead." I said running down the stairs. "Don't hurt her!" Rita shouted. I run out to see them bringing the old lady in the car.
"Back inside, Rita." Mister C ordered. "She's my mother." She replied frowning at him. "Back inside now, I said." He ordered. I started my motor and rode after the car giving us a safe distance.

I woke up again. "Ah, that was one hell of a right hook. Have to watch out for that. Where's Emily?" I asked standing up. "Went down ahead." Rose replied following me down the stairs. I got on the motor to see Emily take off. "Rose, we're gonna lose them again!" I hollered driving away. I caught up with Emily, but we lost them again. "Dang it. Where are they?" Emily asked getting off her scooter. I did too and searched around. I got my sonic screwdriver out and opened a small door in the big gates. "Oh, very good. Very good." I said going in. Emily comes after me and we see two men wire and lock a door. We walked to the door and I unclocked it to reveal cages. We walked to one and saw people with blank faces clench their fists. Search lights turn on. "Stay where you are." Bishop said pointing a gun at my head.
"Start from the beginning. Tell me everything you know." He ordered. "Well, for starters. I know you can't wrap your hand around your elbow and make your fingers meet." I said sarcastically. "Don't get clever with me. You were there at Florizel Street, and now breaking into this establishment. Now you're connected with this. Make no mistake." Bishop said frowning. "Well, the thing is, Detective Inspector Bishop." I stated. "How did you know my name?" He asked frowning.
"It's written inside your collar. Bless your mum. But I can't help but think, Detective Inspector, you're not exactly doing much detective inspecting, are you?" I asked. "I'm doing everything in my power." He replied sadly. "All your doing is grabbing those facelss people and hiding them as fast as you can. Don't tell me orders from above, hmm? Coronation Day. The eyes of the world are on London Town. so any sort of problem just gets swept out of sight." I commented. "The nation has an image to maintain." He replied. "But doesn't it drive you mad, doing nothing? Don't you want to get out there and investigate?" I asked smiling.
"Of course I do. But, with all the crowds expected, we haven't got the man power. Even if we did, this is beyond anything we've ever seen.I just don't know anymore. Twenty years in the force, I don't even know where to start. We haven't the faintest clue what's going on." He replied sadly. "Well that could change." I stated smiling. "How?" He asked frowning. "Let's start from the beginning. Tell me everything you know." I replied smiling.
"We started finding them a month ago. People left sans visage. Heads just blank." He replied. "Is there any sort of pattern?" I asked. "Yes, spreading out from Northern London. All over the city. Men, women, kids, gannies. The only lead we got is there's been a large number in-" I cut him off. "Florizel Street." I finished. "Found another one, sir." A man came in. "Oh, er, good man, Crabtree. Here we are, Doctor. See what you can deduce." He said moving a side. "Rose!" Emily gasped. "Rose." I stated.
"You know her?" He asked frowing. "She's my mother." She said walking towards her. "Know her? She..." I trailed off. Emily exmained her face. It was same with the granny awhile back. "They found her in the street, by the Square, abandoned." The man replied. I was pissed. Whoever had the guts to do that will pay. "That's unusual. That's the first one out in the open. Heaven help us if something like this happens in public tomorrow for the big day We'll have to call Torchwood on our backs then, no mistake." Bishop said frowning. Torchwood? How the hell? Wait, "They did what?" Emily and I asked frowning. "I'm sorry?" He asked. "They left her where?" I asked frowning.
"Just in the street." Bishop replied. Emily glared at the ground. "In the street. They left her in the street. They took her face and just chucked her out on the street and left her on the street. And as a result, that makes things more simple. Very, very simple. Do you know why?" I asked glaring. "no." He replied confused. "Because now, Detective Inspector Bishop, there is no power on Earth that can stop me. Come on! Emily that includes you. Quit glaring at the poor floor." I ordered taking her hand and walking out the door.
Emily
We rang the doorbell. Tommy answered it. "Tommy, talk to me. I need to know what exactly happened in your house." Dad ordered. "What the blazes do you think you're doing?" Mister C asked glaring at us. "I want to help, dad." Tommy stated. "Mister Connolly..." Dad started was cut off. "Shut your face, you, you whoever you are. We can handle this ourselves. Listen, you little twerp. You're hardle out of a bloomin' cradle, so I don't expect you to understand. But I've got a position to maintain. People round her respect me. It matters what people think." He stated. I was about to lay a punch on him, but Dad held me in place giving me the it's-a-family-matter-don't-butt-in look.
"Is that why you did it, dad?" Tommy asked angrily. "What do mean? Did what?" He asked nervously. I knew it! He did it! "You ratted out on Gran. How else would the police know where to look, unless some coward told them." Tommy accused. "How dare you! Do you think I fought in the war for mouthy little scum like you could call me coward?" He asked glaring at his son. I seriously wanted to punch his lights out, but Dad tightened his grip.
"You don't get it, do you? You fought against facism, remember? People telling you have to live, who you could be friends with, who you could fall in-love with, who could live and who could die. Don't you get it? You were fighting so that little twerps like me could do what we want, say what we want. Now you've become just like them. You've been infroming on everyone haven't you? Even Gran. Just to protect your precious reputation." Tommy said infuriated. My, my, what a brave young boy. I'm starting to like him. "Eddie is it true?" Rita asked shock written all over her face. I bit my lip as not to laugh. The old man's name was Eddie!
What a name for an ex-soldier whose a douche. "I did it for us, Rita. She was filthy, A filthy, disgusting thing!" He exclaimed. "She's my mother. All the people you've informed on, all the people in our street, our friends." Rita said frowning. Finally, she stands up to him. "I had to. I, I did the right thing." He stated. "The right thing for us or for you Eddie? You, go Tommy. Go with the Doctor and do some good. Get away from this house, it's poison. We had a ruddy monster under this roof, all right, but it weren't my mother." Rita stated slamming the door in his face. I hugged my Dad and laughed silently.
"Rita!" He shouted. "Tommy?" Dad asked smiling. "That was pretty brave of you to answer back your father. I'm proud of you." I said smiling. "Thanks, but why are you proud of me?" He asked confused. "I can't do that to my father even if I was correct which is really rare. So yeah. I'm proud of you." I said kissing his cheek. "Not now, Emily." Dad teased. I laughed smiling. We walked passed the trestle tables. "Tommy, tell me about that night. The night she changed." Dad ordered smiling. "She was just watching the telly." Tommy replied blushing. I smirked. "Rose said it. She gussed straight away. Of course she did. All these aerials in one street. How come?" Dad asked smiling.
It kinda made my feel bad. I found it first. I should be the one in her place right now... "Bloke up the road, Mister Magpie, he's selling them cheap. " Tommy stated. "Is he, now?" Bishop asked. "Come on!" Dad said smiling and pulling me with him. "What's wrong?" He asked whispering. "It's nothing, Dad." I whispered back. "Don't lie to me." Dad ordered. "I should be in Mom's place. I saw the pink lights to, but I didn't follow it." I replied sadly. "Quit thinking like that. Rose wouldn't want you to feel that way, right?" Dad asked smiling. I smiled running to the store and kicking it open.
"Here, you can't do that." Bishop scolded. I blushed cowering back. Tommy chuckled. "Shop! If you're here, come out and talk to me! Magpie!" Dad shouted. "Maybe he's out." Tommy suggested. "Looks like it." Dad said searching the drawers to find a portable TV. "Oh, hello. This isn't right. This is very much not right. Tastes like iron. Bakelite. Put together human hands, yes, but the design it's self. Oh, beautiful work. That's so simple. Emily, look." Dad said bringing out his sonic screw driver.
Sheeeeesh! When can I get one!? It really was beautiful. "Hold it for me." Dad ordered. I held it smiling. "That's incredible. It's like a portable television. Portable TV." Bishop commented. Dad soniced the things. "It's not the only power source in the room." Dad commented. "Gran?" Tommy asked. I looked up to see each TV with a face and Mom at the lower part. Dad got the portable TV and I kneeled to Rose. She was Mouthing Doctor and Emily. "We're our way." Dad said touching the screen. "What are you doing here?" Magpie asked. "I want my friend restored, and I think that's beyond a little backstreet electrician, so tell me, who's really in charge here?" Dad ordered.
"Yoo Hoo! I think that must be me. Ooh, these two are as smart as paint." She commented. "Is she talking to us?" Bishop asked shock written all over his face. "I'm sorry gentlemen and lady, but you brought his on yourselves. May I present to you my new friend." Magpie said sadly. "Jolly nice to meet you." She said smiling. "Oh my gosh, it's her, that woman off the telly." Bishop exclaimed. "No, it's just using her image." Dad replied. "What? What are you?" Tommy asked confused. "I'm the Wire, and I'll gobble you up, pretty boy. Every last morsel. And when I've feasted, I will regain the corporeal body. Which my fellow kind denied me." She said smiling.
"Colour Televisoin!" Bishop exclaimed. "So your own people tried to stop you?" Dad asked frowning. "They executed me. But I escaped in this form and fled across the stars." She replied smiling "And now you're trapped in the television." Dad commented. "Not for much longer." She replied smiling. "Doctor, is that what got my Gran?" Tommy asked. "Yes, Tommy. It feeds of the elecrical activity of the brain, but it goges itself like a great overfed pig, taking people's faces, their essences. It stuffs itself." Dad replied frowning. "And you let her do it, Magpie." Bishop accused.
"I had to. She allowed me my face. She's promised to release me at the time of manifestation." Magpie replied. "What does he mean?" Tommy asked. "The appointed time. My crowning glory!" She exclaimed. "Doctor, the coronation!" Bishop panicked. "For the first time in history, millions gathered around the television set. But you're not strong enough yet, are you? You can't do it all from here. That's why you need this. You need something more powerful! This will turn a big transmitter into a big reciever." Dad stated. "What a clever thing you are! But why fret about it? Why not just relax? Kick off your shoes and enjoy the Coronation. Believe me, you'll be glued to the screen." She said letting energry lance at us. "Doctor!" Bishop shouted.
"Hungry! Hungry! The Wire is Hungry! Ah these two are tasty. Oh, I'll have lashings for them! Delicious!" She exclaimed. Dad reached for his screwdriver. "Ah! Armed! He's armed and clever! Withdraw! Withdraw!" She panicked backing away. We all collapsed. "Emily, Tommy, wake up. Come on you two!" Dad exclaimed. "What happened?" Tommy asked. "Where's Magpie?" I asked standing up. "Dad, I'll go check on the familes. Go with Tommy." I said running back. "Emily!" Dad hollered, but I just waved a hand and reached the Connolly home. I went in to see everyone getting their faces pulled off. It saw me and started to pull my face too.
After minutes of pain our faces were back on. I smiled and ran out to find Rose and Dad in a hug. I smiled and ran towards them enveloping them both in a hug. "We can down the Mall, join the crowd." Mom suggested kissing my forehead. "Nah, that's just pomp and circumstance. This is history right here." Dad said letting us both go. "The domestic approach." Mom said smiling. "Exactly." Dad replied smiling. "Will it, that thing, is it trapped for good in the video?" Mom asked worried. "Hope so. Just to be on the safe side though, I'll use my unrivalled knowledge of temporal extripation methods to neutralise the residual electronic pattern." Dad replied hiding the tape. "You what?" Mom asked confused. "I'm taping over it." Dad replied smiling. "Just leave it to me. I'm always doing that." Mom stated.
"Tell you what, Tommy, you can have our scooters. Little present. Best, er, keep it in the garage for a few years thougt, eh?" Dad said giving Tommy the keys. I smiled and gave him my keys. Eddie was leaving the house with his overcoat. "Good ridance." Tommy said smiling. "Is that is then, Tommy? New monarch, new age, new world. No room for a man like Eddie Connelly." Dad stated. "That's right. He deserves it." Tommy said frowning. "Tommy, go after him." I said smiling. "What for?" He asked frowning. "He's your dad." I said smiling. "He's an idiot." Tommy stated. "Of course he is. Like I said, he's your dad. But you're clever. Clever enough to save the world, so don't stop there. Go on." I said kissing his cheek.
He smiled and ran to his father to help him. "Not bad. Do you like him?" Mom asked giving me an orange juice. "Yeah, but I can't stay here." I said toasting with them. I hope this never ends, but that vision... I can't get it out of my head.
