The pits are a bit separated from WICKED HQ. They're close to the wood's part, so we get the wood's troop to accompany us. We follow a road and turn few turns. In that time, I wonder what we'll be facing soon. I try to keep my thinking away of Janson. I bloody don't want to remember him ever again. All I've to think about now is finding my friends.

After walking a fair deal, we finally find the concrete stairs going underground. The letters WICKED are high in block over the entrance. The trees are thick above, shading every single beam of light. It feels like the entrance to a grave.

We descend the stairs where darkness swallows everything. Everyone looks to stay firm. Tris finally draws out a torch light, and in the beam, we see a gate with rusty, metallic bars. Rusty, but clean, except for few traces of the past few days' events. "The Ferris wheel no longer sounds like a bad place," whispers Four.

A chain seals the two parts of the gate, and a nut locks it. The lock looks strong, but Four gets it broken in a short while using a small blue-torch. The chain falls soundly, its rattle echoing in the lonely, long, and dark path, and the gate sways open.

"Who wants to go first?" Four turns to us and asks.

"I shall go first," I answer. I take down my mask and shove it to hang back. Tris does the same. I take a deep breath and feel the blood pumping across my body. I'm not scared. I was a crank, thus, I'm best for this mission.

I step in, Four and Tris following behind. Tris holds the torch, I a launcher, and Four a shotgun for any emergency. The air is heavy with stinky odors and the cold smell of death. Our footsteps echo, making the place feel like the Maze at night; however, instead of waiting for a bloody Griever to jump at any moment, we're looking out for cranks.

"Don't switch on the light!" I cry for Tris who goes to the electricity panel looking for the switch. "Light attracts cranks," I say more slowly. "Switch it on and you'll likely find five running to eat your face."

Four and Tris exchange a disgusted look, but they listen. I don't feel Four is enjoying this whole situation of me being the leader here, but he doesn't say anything about it.

We go in the path slow and easy for ten minutes that feel like ten years. Finally, we get to a wide area with a metal fence surrounding it from three sides. Traces of old, dry bloody are on the floor. On a wall, a board with bad handwriting is hanged.

WICKED IS GOOD

I fist my hand and press on my jaws, but I stay quiet.

"I don't want to think what happened inside this place," Tris gibbers.

"You better not," I answer under my breath.

I go around the area checking the floor and the walls as if they might be hiding anything. Suddenly-

"Do you hear that?" I look up at them and ask.

"Hear what?" Four asks me.

"Someone's inside. There's a humming. We've to go in." I stand and pick up my launcher. Four stops me. "Hey. Where do you think you're going?" he asks.

"I've to go in there. Someone's inside. Can't you hear it?"

"You think your friends will be inside singing a song?" Four asks. My nerves flare, but I keep them down.

"If you don't want to go in, I'll go on my own. Someone's inside," I answer, looking firmly straight at him.

"Hey! Boys! Will you get it down a bit?" Tris then shouts. "Newt, Four is right. If there's anything in there, it's cranks only. There's no sign of sane, human life in here."

"I've to go there. Don't you understand?!" I shout. "I am not leaving a chance of finding them, alright? Even if it meant jumping into bloody, flesh-eating cranks. They did it once for me; I've to do it for them."

Four and Tris look startled. I break loose and go to find a way to enter. Tris tries to follow, but Four holds her back. Suddenly, Four's walkie-talkie beeps.

"Four, can you hear me? You've to come here now. We found something."

When I hear the words, I don't know what happens to me. I forget my limp, the launcher that weighs like a ton on my shoulder, Four and Tris behind, and I run. I go past the gates in the little light. I run upstairs, and rush to the compound. I finally make it to the camp in no time. I find Sorcha standing by the door.

"What's there? What did you find?" I yell. She looks a bit disturbed but keeps it down. "Newt, you've to listen. The situation is still quite critical. You need to-"

I shove the curtains-door and enter. A dozen of doctors are present, who swipe to the side when I enter. A bed is in the middle, and white feet are showing from the blanket. I go closer. The person's face is bloodied and covered in ash and soot, but I recognize her.
