One
The first time Lian woke up he was dimly aware that he was screaming. His whole body was blazing and there was some sticky substance on his hands and face. He couldn't open his eyes. There were hands holding him down as voices whispered in his ears. It hurt. It hurt. It burned and it ached. His face felt like fire but his back felt like it had been torn apart, like his skin had been peeled off. There were things tugging at the skin and he was still screaming. He only stopped screaming when he passed out again.
The second time he woke up the pain had dulled. He was no longer screaming. Someone must have given him some sort of drugs as everything was hazy. The voices sounded like they were underwater and the light sparkled when he opened his eyes. He couldn't make out faces but there was a urgency in the way that they fluttered around him. There was a sense of movement and suddenly the fire was back. This time he didn't scream before he was slipping back into unconsciousness.
The third time it was him who was underwater. He was first aware of being weightless, submerged in a liquid like substance. A breather was clasped round his mouth to give him breath. For a moment he kept his eyes closed. Just simply relying on the feel of the air in his lungs and the blissful absence of pain. He didn't know how long it had been but for what felt like the first time in a while, he wasn't on fire. It took a few minutes until his fingers twitched and he was stirring. The liquid was heavier than water, more like a gloopy wet gel. He was in a bacta tank. He had only heard about these. They were expensive medical treatments that the poor people on Jedha could never afford. Lian blinked open his eyes and suddenly felt like he was in a fish tank.
Blurry figures began moving on the other side of the glass. His sight was hindered by the bacta but he thought that he recognised Bodhi jumping to his feet and pressing a button on the wall. (Only one person he knew was that skinny with that hairstyle ). Lian reached a hand out and Bodhi stepped closer to the glass. Behind him, a few figures in white rushed into view. They began scuttling round the tank, forcing Bodhi back. Lian felt someone pull him up. His head breaking the surface as he was hoisted by several pairs of hands in to the air. Just as their faces became visible, he lost consciousness again. The light fading out as his eyes slid shut.
The fourth time he awoke he was in a bed this time. Starch white sheets and grey stone walls that swam into focus after a few blinks. Bodhi was snoring in a chair at his bedside. His feet propped at the edge of the bed, head lolling as he snored. His long hair was unbound and it lay over his face. The strands wet and curling over his neck. He wore a set of clothes that were obviously not his, the brown trousers were too baggy and his shirt sleeves were too short. A black jacket was slung over his chair. Lian looked around but there was no one else in the hospital room. Only a medical droid in the corner. It beeped to life and hovered over as he sat up.
His muscles ached and he groaned as he pushed himself up. His back felt itchy and the skin strangely tight. It tugged as he moved and he bit his lip. "Do you require some assistance?" The droid asked in a mechanical voice. "A doctor has been alerted and is on their way". Lian nodded and looked down at himself. His robes were gone and had been replaced with a white medical gown. His staff was also missing and he tried not to panic at that fact.
"Bodhi", he called. Bodhi frowned and yawned.
"Bodhi!"
"What?" He mumbled.
"Bodhi!" Lian snapped. "For Farrick's sake, wake up".
Bodhi blinked at him half asleep. Then his eyes widened and he sat up suddenly, feet hitting the floor with a thud. "Lian! You're awake. Oh thank force! Doctor, I should get a doctor".
"A doctor is on their way", the medical droid responded. Bodhi blinked uncertainly.
"Right. Good". Then he turned back to Lian with pure relief on his face. "You're awake".
"As you keep telling me", Lian replied with a slight smile. "What happened? How did we get off Scarif?"
Bodhi's face fell and a grief stricken look shuttered down on his face. Liam felt dread enter his stomach. The pilot took a deep breath. "You knocked back the grenade but you were too close to the blast. The shrapnel got you. I managed to drag you onto the ship but the imps were closing in. Then the shield gate went down and the plans were out. Cassian and Jyn did it. I started up the ship". He paused and took a shuddering breath. "No one else made it".
"They didn't make it?" Lian could feel the shock and grief turn sour in his gut.
Bodhi looked at him sadly. "The Death Star fired on Scarif. Cassian and Jyn couldn't make it to the ship. The others were blocked. Cassian told me to go. He told me to go. I needed to go otherwise you were going to die too. I had to go".
Lian was shaking. "Force. Oh force". He could feel tears welling up and forced them down. He went to reach for his scarf but it wasn't there. Instead he pressed his hands over his mouth as he tried to stop the shaking.
"Hey Lian", Bodhi was there. His hands held up awkwardly, not knowing where to place them. After a second he took Lian's shoulders gently. "Lian breath".
"We're the last Jedhan's. I'm the last guardian. There's no one left". Lian's voice broke. Bodhi's eyes became glassy and he nodded. The damn broke and Lian was sobbing. He was shaking and heaving. Jedha was gone. The temples, the market, the people. The guardian's of the Whills were no more. Lian was the last of his religion. His brotherhood, his order. He could feel his panic rising. A button was pressed and medics in white came in. They crowded round him, pushing Bodhi back as they got closer.
"Mr Lian", a twi'lek woman with crow feet around her eyes and a warm voice soothed. She had pale purple skin and dark brown eyes. "Mr Lian you're having a panic attack. You need to calm down. We don't want you to reopen your wounds". Lian fixed her with wide eyes, his breaths still coming in gasps.
"Lian", Bodhi shoved another doctor out of the way and took his other side. "Breath with me. Remember your prayers. I am one with the force- come on. You know the rest".
"And the force is with me", Lian stuttered. Bodhi nodded and put his hands on Lian's shoulders to ground him.
"Pray with me".
Lian closed his eyes and tried to slow his breathing. Bodhi doing the same in front of him, his touch grounding. "I am one with the force and the force is with me. I am one with the force and the force is with me". Slowly, as the mantra repeated Lian felt his heart calm as his breathing slowed. Eventually he opened his eyes. His lashes were wet with tears and he rubbed at them. Bodhi smiled at him weakly.
The twi'lek woman nodded at him calmly. She was still standing next to his bed. The other medics having left once finding out that there was no medical emergency. "There", she smiled. "Are you feeling better now?" Lian nodded, once again wishing for his scarf. He made a motion with his hand and Bodhi's eyebrow's raised in realisation.
"Your robe and scarf have been washed and are in my room", he stated. "There are several rips in the fabric but I managed to stop them from being thrown out. I'm sure we can repair them". Lian let out a sigh. He raised his hand and gestured to himself while wincing. A simple gesture. Bodhi nodded, understanding completely, and turned to the medic. "He has trouble talking to strangers", he murmured. "But he wants to know what his injuries are".
The Twi'lek woman nodded in understanding. "After the trauma you two have been through, I wouldn't expect any less. My name is Ami", she smiled. Then her face fell and she picked up a data pad from the nearby table. "You had numerous shrapnel wounds across your back and on your legs. It's a wonder we managed to save them. Also there's the burns and the blaster wound on your face. All of which will leave nasty scars I'm afraid". At her words Lian raised his hands and winced as his fingers cast the tender mess of scar tissue across his face.
Ami gently pulled his hand away and handed him her data pad. The screen turned into a mirror and Lian peered at himself. His had was still its short black fluff and his skin was waxy pale from healing. What was new was the white mess of burn scars on his jaw and neck round under his right ear. It stretched up over his jaw line onto his cheek. On the other side of his face was the blaster burn, still red. It was a long line from just over his bridge of his nose near his right eye, down his left cheek to his jaw line. He raised his fingers and traced the line through the air, unsure about what to feel like.
"At lest I will now have an excuse for my scarf", he whispered to Bodhi. The pilot snorted slightly and grinned.
"You saved my life. Those scars are proof. That grenade would have blow up the ship and us with it if your hadn't moved in time". Bodhi paused to take a breath. "I'm so glad you're awake. You've been asleep for over a week now".
"You're heroes to the republic", Ami stated with a smile. "Without you the death star would never have been destroyed. Once you're up for it, Princess Leia would like to meet you. I believe that there is a medal ceremony once you're able. They've been delaying it until you were awake". Lian and Bodhi both flushed in embarrassment.
