Dean knew something was off about his 13-year-old brother, when they got in the impala headed towards a hunt basically in Bobby's backyard, and the kid was practically mute. Normally, Sammy was a motor mouth; he loved the kid to death, but he wondered on more than one occasion if he ever breathed. He did learn after a while that he only talked like that about lore he knew too well and his school work that excited his brain.
They had been in the car for about 4 hours when John pulled into a gas station. He paid for gas, drinks, and food, which he passed out without a word. Dean got out of the car after nodding to his dad in appreciation.
"Where are you going?" John demanded, frowning in surprise at his eldest's sudden movement.
"Thought I'd sit with Sammy for a change." Dean supplied, with a nonchalant shrug. John and a very pale Sam looked at him in surprise.
"Do what you want… Don't complain to me if you're sore." John grumbled as he buckled up, and Dean followed suit. As soon as Dean was buckled and comfortable, Sam lay his head down on Dean's lap and closed his eyes.
"You okay, Sammy?" The older Winchester brother asked in a low voice, so their dad wouldn't hear him over the music that started blaring as soon as John started driving again.
Sam shook his head, the movement brief, easy to miss if they weren't trained to notice the smallest of details. He opened his eyes to look at Dean, and his big brother could see how glassy and cloudy his eyes looked, telling him poor Sammy had a fever brewing.
"What doesn't feel good?" Dean asked, concern wrinkling his brow. He ghosted his fingertips over Sam's forehead, relieved that there didn't appear to be any sign of a fever.
"I'm dizzy," Sam admitted after a few minutes of silence, as if the idea of talking was proving difficult. Dizziness was never a good thing for any of the Winchesters, it tended to knock them on their butts, never in the same way twice.
"Just close your eyes and rest, hopefully you'll feel better when we get to the hunt spot." Dean offered, praying the kid was just carsick.
Sam's nod was slow and calculated, but his body soon relaxed and he fell into what could only be described as an uncomfortable sleep. He slept for about an hour to an hour and a half, just long enough for Dean to doze off too, before starting to fidget around in his sleep. He moaned in a low tone of voice, before letting out a soft whimper.
He sat up quick, hands over his mouth in a panic. He looked around frantic, as his mouth watered, his eyes darting back and forth, he gulped in an effort to slow whatever anxious urge was within him.
"De…" he gasped out, turning towards his big brother for help in desperation, as the feeling wouldn't relax.
Dean opened his eyes nice and slow like, at least that's how Sam felt, and looked at his ghost-white and shaking little brother. "What's…?" he started to ask, before he watched Sam gag and lurch forward with such aggression, he missed the part where his little brother coated his lap in watery vomit.
"Samuel!" John snapped, pulling the car over, getting out of the car and forcing the sick teen out onto the side of the street. "You know the rules, no puking in my car." he grumbled, as he assessed if the kid was carsick or actually sick, even as poor Sammy was retching in agony like his tank was empty. If asked, he'd never admit how shocked he was, Sam had not been this miserable or sick looking this morning. At least not that he noticed, and now he had a puker on his hands, and someone who had been puked on.
"I'm fine, dad. He only got a little bit on me, and none on the car." Dean said climbing out of the car, to change his pants seeing as the smell was awful and he looked like he peed his pants.
John clapped Sam on the back, he wasn't rough but he wasn't gentle either. "Thanks, Dean. Change your pants, and pull that extra bin from the trunk, we still got an hour or so til we get to Bobby's and I don't want Sam puking on himself, us, or the car… again." he instructed, as his youngest sagged from exhaustion and dizziness. "You good, kid?" he asked in surprise.
Dean took one look at Sam, judging by how worn out he was and how disoriented he looked, he had a feeling he knew what was up. "You dizzy still?" he asked Sam, as he went about pulling out the bin and snagging a change of pants.
Sam did the sign yes in sign language, as he watched Dean change his pants through blurry, unfocused eyes. So he didn't really see anything, but it still made Dean glare at him for a sec then he remembered the kid was sick and that meant he was more sensitive. Dean couldn't have been more happy that Sammy was unable to process the look.
Once his dirty pants were in a separate part of the trunk, Dean walked over to help Sam back to the car, not loving that his little brother was wobbly, but they got back in the car making sure Sam had the bin.
Sam lay his head on Dean's shoulder and closed his eyes, swallowing hard a few times when John started driving towards Bobby's instead of the hunt. Dean noticed the change of direction right away, and the poor kid's reaction to the moving vehicle. He silently opened his gatorade from the gas station and offered it to Sammy. The teen knew better than to argue with his big brother even if the idea of drinking that sickie sweet drink was nauseating, but he took the drink and sipped on it urging it to heal his angry stomach.
"Why did you change the direction we are going? Did the hunt change locations?" Dean asked in a calm voice, trying to hide his curiosity.
"We are going to Bobby's instead, with Sam as sick as he is, he'd be more dangerous on a hunt than helpful." John supplied, peeking in his rearview mirror at the now dozing, sick teen. "How's his fever?" he asked.
Dean reached over and touched Sam's forehead with a light touch, whistling a soft sound that caused Sam to stiffen but remained asleep with a low groan. "High, but not dangerous. Still incredibly nauseous from the looks of it." he reported, watching his little brother with watchful eyes.
"We'll be at Bobby's in ten." John said, as he nodded in recognition to Dean's information. Dean nodded in understanding, worried about how sick Sam had gotten and why it had happened out of the blue.
"Was he sick last night?" Dean asked, wracking his brain to understand what had changed. He jumped a little when Sam shifted on him, showing the sick boy's face getting almost ghost white in his sleep. "Might wanna hurry, Dad. He is about to wake up and get sick, or get sick in his sleep." He warned.
John hit the gas, figuring if they got pulled over a puking teen would be a good alibi. But it wasn't necessary, he pulled into Bobby's a couple minutes later without any incidents, much to his and Dean's relief.
"Let's get him in and comfortable with the gatorade… and a bucket." he said in a tight voice knowing that they were in for a long ride, until Sam "decided" to stop puking.
Bobby walked out to meet them, taking in their worried faces, and was quick to frown in surprise and concern as Dean urged an unwell Sam towards the house, the poor teen was swaying unsteady and leaning hard on his big brother.
He walked up to John, who was working on unpacking the impala. "Rough trip?" he asked, almost dreading the answer that was going to come out of the other hunter's mouth. He reached in to grab the pair of pants Sam puked on, and John was quick to stop him.
"Don't touch those!" John exclaimed, starting the older hunter, before flinching as Bobby gave him the "Spill the beans or else," look. "Sam puked in Dean's lap on the way here." he explained, his voice more calm than before. "Yes, he missed the car." he added, relief dripping in his voice.
"I wasn't going to ask, I was going to ask about Sam. Honestly, John, where is your focus? It should be on your sick kid, not a hunt… or gosh forbid, he accidentally pukes in your car." Bobby said in a firm tone, as he scooped up the jeans that were almost fully saturated in Sam's vomit, but it didn't faze Bobby one bit. He turned around and walked inside, leaving a flabbergasted John in his wake, to see that Dean had gotten Sam situated on the couch to John's exact specifications.
Poor Sammy was whiter than a piece of paper and shaking worse than than a leaf in a hurricane. He couldn't even hold the Gatorade himself, he had spilled a bit on his shirt on the first try, so Dean was helping him hold the bottle so he could sip on the drink.
"Hey kids, I heard there was an accident on the way. Feeling any better?" Bobby asked, sitting next to the shaking teen in question. Sam curled into himself, before leaning into Bobby, as the couch shifted and bounced when Bobby sat down making Sam's stomach churn in painful circles.
"I puked on Dean by accident… I really feel awful and nauseous…" Sam admitted, his voice strained and tired. He didn't want to admit it aloud, or to himself that he was in fact going to puke again… and soon.
Bobby chuckled, jostling Sam even more, unbeknownst to him he was just agitating an already angry volcano in the kid's stomach. "Caught you by surprise, did he?" he teased Dean, pulling Sam closer and away from the bucket.
Dean laughed, shaking his head, until he saw Sam's face. He made a dive for the bucket, which in all honesty was not far away from him or Sam, but he wasn't fast enough to save Bobby or Bobby's ancient couch.
Sam whimpered at the nudging from Bobby's laughter, and before he could utter a word of warning, once again, all that gatorade Dean had been encouraging him to drink reappeared in the older man's lap and overflowed to the couch. Dean managed to grab and thrust the bucket under his little brother's chin, in time for the younger teen to dry heave non-stop, giving the appearance he was on empty.
"Whoa! Easy there, kiddo, you're going to up-chuck a kidney or something." Bobby said a bit startled, but he started rubbing Sam's back almost out of instinct, knowing full well the poor kid was miserable enough without being blamed or yelled at for a bodily function that appeared to have a mind of its own.
Sam was breathing so hard he kept gagging at random, as he tried to calm down, looking anywhere but at Dean, Bobby, or the bucket as everything was making him dizzy and nauseous all over again. "I… I… I'm s… s… sor… ry...y…" He stammered, getting light-headed from how fast he was breathing.
"Sammy, look at me… remember look at me… you're not in trouble." Dean said in a calm voice, he knew Sam would relax if he saw his big brother and remembered their breathing techniques they had learned together when the sick adolescent was a toddler.
Sam looked up at Dean, watching his chest move up and down in even breaths and copied the timing to the best of his ability. It took him some time but he relaxed enough to pull away from Bobby and survey the damage in shy trepidation. He had coated Bobby's lap and couch quite well, thank goodness he insisted on drinking Frost Glacier Cherry aka white gatorade.
John walked in arms laden with their belongings and weapons to clean… again, only to stop short at the scene before him. "What the crap did I miss?" he asked, dropping all their bags in a corner of the living room that was empty and out of the way.
"Poor kid's stomach is still too unsettled for the gatorade." Bobby said with a nonchalant shrug, as he looked around in a brief search for a loose towel or two. "Dean, can you run to the basement and grab me a few towels?" he requested, looking over at Sam who appeared to be nodding off while sitting up.
Dean nodded, jumping up and running off to do as he was told, only to return within a minute or two and dump a towel on Bobby's lap and start using another towel to start sopping up the mess on the couch. His sudden movements/appearance startled Sam awake, making the kid gag up a thin stream of stomach acid and bile down the front of his white shirt.
"You good?" his big brother asked who was immediate to wipe his shirt and chin up.
Sam shook his head and shakily got up, before bolting down the hall and into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him which caused Dean and Bobby to cringe.
John was quick to follow after Sam, knocking without a word and walking into the bathroom, to find the poor teen curled up around the toilet breathing so hard, his face was red. "Have you puked since you got in here?" he asked, watching him as he got him a cup of water, grateful that Bobby was weird and kept little paper cups in his bathrooms.
Sam shook his head, peeking at his dad as the man sat his large frame on the floor beside him and patted his leg. He looked at the man confused by his proffered idea and accepted the water, even though he knew it would make him feel worse. He sipped at the water until it was gone, feeling even more nauseous than before.
"Lay down, rest your head on my thigh, and relax. Maybe, just maybe it will relax your stomach." John explained in a bit of a 'duh' tone, but there was still a touch of tenderness to it.
Sam laid down, wrapping his arms around his middle, mentally begging his stomach to relax and stop trying to explode out of his mouth. He closed his eyes and, like clockwork, the world started spinning and tilting making his stomach feel worse. He tried to focus on his father's fingers carding through his shaggy hair, but focusing on his movements only added to his dizzying sensation.
"M… Dad, 'M… going puke," he warned as he started to push himself upright but was stopped by John's hand on his back.
"You're okay. Relax and breathe." John said, ignoring the urgency in Sam's voice. He continued to push the teen down hard enough that Sam's exhaustion prevented him from pushing back strong enough to get up and over the toilet in time.
Seconds later, the older hunter heard a weird noise, and he realized his leg was soaked in vomit. "Oh, that's okay, you're okay." he said, patting Sam's back as he dry heaves over and over again. After what felt like forever, the dry heaves quieted and his stomach started to settle, he was still dizzy but not too dizzy.
Dean walked in at the tail end and watched his dad take care of his little brother. "Want me to take him for a bit so you can get cleaned up, and help Bobby clean up the couch?" He offered, seeing how worn out the poor kid was.
"Yeah, have him lay down. He needs some sleep…" John said with a chuckle looking at his dozing youngest. He was very careful when he shook Sam's shoulder. "It's time to go lay down with Dean, don't worry he has a bucket."
Sam nodded, his nods slow and tired like. He got off the floor, quick to grab Dean in a clingy hug. He allowed his big brother to lead him out of the bathroom and down the hall a bit to the guest room, where they sleep whenever they visit. He waited for Dean to lay down against the headboard, before laying down beside him, and resting his head on a pillow on his big brother's lap.
Almost as soon as his head hit the pillow, he was out quiet snores signaling he was finally getting some rest, and that he was unaware of the love being shown because of him.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bobby and John scrubbed at the couch, knowing it was a lost cause due to the age of the couch.
"Time to go couch shopping." John said with a chuckle, throwing his dirty towel into the bucket of dirty water. "Gotta thank the boy, you needed an update anyways." he teased.
Bobby scowled at John, "Yeah, bless his heart. Wish he had just told me he didn't like the couch…" he said straight-faced. He peeked at John, as the other hunter grabbed a clean pillow and threw it at the older man.
