Fireworks

"Where are we going?" Jensen asked you, watching as the fields flew past the car window. Fields of wheat and corn were nothing more than a blur as you continued to drive past.

"Does it matter?" You asked, reaching over and threading your fingers through his. "Just relax babe."

He took a deep breath, the wind ruffling his hair. He looked more tired than normal, and you weren't surprised. After all, they had just finished filming the season finale, and it had been a stressful past couple of weeks. "No, I guess it doesn't," he answered, his smile goofy.

"I just thought we both could use this," you continued, turning left onto the highway, heading towards Dallas. "After you've been so busy filming, and work has been crazy for me too. I've missed you like crazy, and...,"

"Missed you too sweetheart," He agreed. "And time with just you and me? Sounds perfect."

He saw the sign for Dallas, and things started clicking. "Fireworks?" He asked and you nodded. "Man, we haven't been back here for the fireworks since...

"Since our second date," you answered. "It seemed fitting. Fireworks tonight, then I found this cute little hotel about fifteen minutes away. A weekend to ourselves."

The crowds of people and cars grew as you got closer to the amusement park. Families with excited kids. Teenagers on their first dates. Even an older couple slowly making their way to the main gates. You found a parking spot on a side street. Taking a baseball cap for both you and Jensen, you tucked the keys in your side pocket. "Ready?"

"Hell yeah!" He exclaimed. With one arm around you, Jensen guided you through the crowd, straight up to the ticket booth.

"Two tickets please," he started to say when he noticed the older couple in line behind him. Smiling softly, he bought their tickets as well. You watched over your shoulder as they received the news their tickets were already paid for, and it was worth it. They had huge smiles on their faces.

"That was sweet," you kissed his cheek.

He squeezed your hand. "I want that to be us someday," he told you. "Old, but still deeply in love and acting like kids again."

"I'd like that too," You agreed. Jensen guided the way, and you let him pick your activities. First, it was the games, tossing the rings over bottles, throwing a baseball into cans. He was talented at pretty much everything he did, winning you a giant stuffed unicorn.

As Jensen played the games, you could see him start to relax. His shoulders dropped some of the tension, his movements lighter. You enjoyed watching him relax, glad you were able to give him this moment.

After the games, you could hear Jensen's stomach grumbling. "Food time?" You offered. Without even answering he tugged on your hand, dragging you to the nearest food truck. Soon your arms were piled full of any carnival food you could think of. Funnel cake and corn dogs. Shoestring fries and lemonade to share.

"This is a lot of food," you muttered, but Jensen just popped a fry into your mouth. "Shh, you only live once. And we can work it off next week."

He found a picnic table nearby and you happily sat down all the food. Taking a bite of corndog, you could see the sun start to set behind the Ferris wheel. You'd have to hurry if you wanted your plan to go off perfectly. "Jensen, eat up," you ordered, taking another big bite.

Jensen's mouth was full, his cheeks bulging when you picked up the empty containers, dropping them in the trash. "Come on!" You exclaimed, pulling him through the crowd, hoping that you weren't going to miss out.

Thankfully there was only a short line to the Ferris Wheel. A couple of teenage couples and a group of friends. And then it was your turn. Jensen handed over the tickets to the pimply-faced teenage boy, who stared at him in return. "Do I know you?"

"Nope," Jensen answered. Still, he leaned in, whispered into the young man's ear, handing over a twenty-dollar bill before tugging on your arm and pulling you into the available car. Away it moved, letting the next group settle in. The sun had just set, the deep turquoise fading away into the neon lights of the fair.

Jensen tucked you against his shoulder. The night air had a slight chill to it, and you were grateful for the warmth of his body against yours. "Hey, weren't we up here last time for the fireworks?" He asked.

"Yep," You answered. "We were stopped on the top, and that's when you kissed me."

"Jensen, what was the twenty for?" You asked, but the ride stopped suddenly with your car on the top, facing the fireworks just as they started to go off. "Oh, I get it now."

He squeezed your shoulder. "Did the same thing the last time too," he chuckled. "Also promised the kid an autograph when we get done."

The fireworks were stunning, especially up this high in the air with nothing blocking your view. Jensen's arm stayed wrapped tight around you, his face relaxed and happy.

"Jensen," you pulled his attention away from the fireworks to face you.

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Marry me?" You blurted out. You hadn't expected to ask him. Hell, you had always considered yourself the traditionalist, wanting the man to get down on one knee and propose. But everything was just perfect about tonight, and you didn't want to wait any longer. "I didn't plan this but...,"

He chuckled, leaning away from you for a moment, dashing your hopes. Maybe he didn't want this either. It could have been too fast, or...

"You beat me to it," he explained, pulling a sleek, black velvet box from his pocket. "I was going to ask you tonight."

You blushed although you were relieved that you were both on the same wavelength. "Go ahead," You insisted, letting him take over.

"Thank you, because I had this whole speech planned as well," he told you, as the fireworks continued to go off in the distance, the perfect backdrop.

"Screw the speech," he reached for your hand. "I want to marry you. I want to have kids with you. I want to build us a house. I want to settle down and grow old with you. I want to die when I'm 110 years old in your arms. I don't want 48 uninterrupted hours. I want a lifetime. What do you say?"

The fireworks finale echoed through the chilly night air as you threw your arms around him, whispering yes into his lips as you sealed the deal with a kiss.
