Chapter 23
Kat's POV
I walk down the halls of Midtown, looking around as people were taking down Homecoming banners.
"Liz!" I spot a certain brown-haired girl walking the halls, eyes downcast. Liz was now moving to Oregon because her dad didn't want her to attend the trial.
"Kat. Hey." Liz smiles at me, and my guilt rises ten-fold, as Liz still didn't know that I had a small/big part in her father getting caught.
"I'm sorry about your father. It must be terrible." I start.
"It's fine. I'm just confused about why he'd do it." Liz sighs.
"Everyone's got their reasons, but sometimes they don't want the public to know," I say.
"Wise words. I'll miss you, Kat. It's been really nice to know you." Liz says.
"Thank you. It was nice to know you too." I smile.
"Well, this is goodbye now." Liz walks away.
"Bye." I walk to the library, for a Decathlon meeting.
Mr. Harrington brings the Decathlon trophy to us. "Congratulations, Decathlon national champions."
"Yeah!" We cheer, clapping our hands.
"I'm gonna have to put this back in the trophy case soon, but just for motivation right now at this practice. I'm a little ahead of the game, but we will need a new team captain next year. So I'm appointing Michelle." Mr. Harrington informs, and we turn to MJ and clap loudly.
"Yeah!" We cheer, as MJ smiles.
"Uh, thank you. My friends call me MJ." MJ says.
"I... I gotta go." Peter says, standing up.
"Hey, where you going?" MJ asks, as Peter freezes. MJ stares at him, eyes filled with suspicion.
"What are you hiding, Peter?" MJ questions as Peter's mouth opens, but no sound comes out. A grin breaks out on MJ's face.
"I'm just kidding. I don't care. Bye." MJ replies, as my phone starts to ring.
"Sorry guys." I apologize, standing up to the side. "Kat Maximoff, who is this?"
"Go outside, Happy's waiting for you, along with Peter," Tony says.
"I have Decathlon." I add dryly.
"Do you think I care?" Tony asks.
"Nope. Bye." I end the call, walking to the table. "Sorry guys, I gotta go, something's come up."
"Right, bye." MJ nods.
"See you guys tomorrow." I wave.
"Bye Kat!" Everyone waves. I walk out of the classroom, and next to Happy's car as Peter and Happy come out.
"Hey Kat!" Peter greets, as we go inside the car.
"Hi Peter." I smile. We start driving to the compound, as Peter and I sit in a comfortable silence.
"Take a look. It's pretty impressive, huh?" Happy says, as outside the window, we see the New Avengers Facility, or compound.
"They just finished remodeling the whole thing. It was really loud." I add as Peter studies the facility with an awed expression. We walk out, and into a hallway inside the compound, as Peter watches a Quinjet fly off with a huge grin.
"You don't see that every day." Happy adds.
"No, you really don't." I say as Tony approaches us, wearing sunglasses.
"Why are you wearing sunglasses inside the compound?" I ask, but my comment was ignored by everyone, expect for Peter, who was trying not to laugh.
"Oh, there they are. How was the ride up?" Tony asks.
"Good." Happy nods.
"Give me a minute with the kid," Tony says.
"Seriously?" Happy asks.
"Yeah. I gotta talk to the kid." Tony says.
"I'll be close behind." Happy sighs.
"How about a loose follow? All right? Boundaries are good." Tony playfully punches Peter in the shoulder, then puts an arm around him, as I walk behind them, 3ft away.
"Sorry I took your suit. I mean, you had it coming. Actually, it turns out it was the perfect sort of tough-love moment that you needed, right? To urge you on, right? Wouldn't you think? Don't you think?" Tony asks, more directed at Peter.
"Yeah, yeah, I guess." Peter nods.
"Let's just say it was." Tony sighs and continues leading Peter towards a certian door.
"Mr. Stark, I really-" Peter starts.
Tony cuts him off. "You screwed the pooch hard. Big time. But then you did the right thing. Took the dog to the free clinic, you raised the hybrid puppies... All right, not my best analogy." A beat of silence. "I was wrong about you. I think, with a little more mentoring, you could be a real asset to the team." Wait, is he? Yup he is.
"To the... To the team?" Peter stutters.
"Avengers." I say.
"Yeah. Anyway..." Tony points at a door. "There's about fifty reporters behind that door. Real ones, not bloggers." Tony informs as he presses some buttons on his watch and a secret compartment in the wall opens, revealing a brand new Spiderman suit.
"Woah." I gasp, staring at the suit, and then on my bracelet. "That's pretty cool."
"When you're ready... Why don't you try that on? And I'll introduce the world to the newest official member of the Avengers: Spiderman." Tony suggests.
"I..." Peter chuckles, amazed.
"Yeah. Give that a look." Tony nods, as Peter continues to admire the new suit.
"So, after the press conference, Happy will show you to your room, your new quarters." Tony turns to Happy. "Where's he between? He's next to Vision?"
"Yeah, Vision's not big on doors." Happy says.
"It's fun." Tony argues.
"Or walls." I add.
Tony turns to Peter. "You'll fit right in." Peter hesitates for a moment, then turns to Tony.
"Thank you, Mr. Stark. But I'm good." Peter says.
"You're good? Good? How are you good?" Tony asks, taken aback. I smirk at Peter, knowing that he was one of the few people that have ever made Tony at a loss of words.
"Well, I mean, I'm... I'd rather just stay on the ground for a little while. Friendly neighborhood Spiderman. Somebody's got to look out for the little guy, right?" Peter reasons.
Tony takes off his sunglasses and stares at Peter. "You turning me down? You better think about this." He points at the new Spiderman suit. "Look at that. Look at me. Last chance, yes or no?"
Peter shakes his head. "No."
"Okay. It's kind of a Springsteen-y, working class hero vibe that I dig. Uh, Happy will take you home. Yeah?" Tony sighs. "You, go with him. I got many places to be at, and Vision ditched us. Again."
"Aye, aye Tony." I nod.
"Yeah." Happy nods. "Mind waiting in the car? I need a minute."
"Thank you, Mr. Stark." Peter says.
"Yes, Mr. Parker. Very well." Tony and Peter shake hands.
"See you around." Peter says.
"Okay." Tony nods. Peter starts to leave, as I follow next to him, but then he slows to a stop and turns to Tony, who is putting the new suit away with a tap on his watch, and I nearly trip.
"That was a test, right? There's, uh, nobody back there?" Peter asks.
"Yes, you passed. All right, skedaddle there, young buck." Tony nods.
"Thank you, Mr. Stark. Thank you." Peter thanks, walking backwards.
"Yeah, thank you." Tony waves his hand absentmindly.
We walk out to Happy's car, and we lean on the side of said car, bathing in silence.
"So, that was. Crazy." I smile.
"Yeah, sorry again for ignoring you." Peter apologizes.
"And again, it's fine. You had your reasons." I add.
"Kat, I have something to tell you." Peter starts, and I look at him.
"Yeah?" I ask.
"At first, I thought I was in love with Liz, but after all of this-" Peter waved his hands in the air. "But after Homecoming, I guess I finally realized who I loved the most."
"And who's that?" I ask, blushing.
"I-I-I. Oh gosh. I like-like you!" Peter stutters.
"I- like-like you too Peter." I smile at him, my feeling of nervousness grows as we get closer to each other to the point where I could feel Peter's soft breath on my face.
"Can- can I kiss you?" Peter asks.
"No need to ask Parker." I laugh airily, as Peter closes the small space between us. I could hear fireworks in my mind, as I melted at his touch.
Ew. Now this sounds like a romance novel. Which, it was not.
"I uh, you wanna go on a date with me?" Peter questions.
"Sure, if you kiss me again." I smirk, as my brain went on overload. When did I get this confident? Was it euphoria? What was it?
"Really? I thought it was bad." Peter says.
"Well, then the second kiss you'll have more experience." I point out.
"I guess so." And with that he planted his lips on mine once more.
This was definitely one of the best days of my life.
