Chapter 20

Peter's POV

Helicopters are still flying around the ferry, while I am perching on the edge of a building, mask in hand, when Mr. Stark flies over to me.

"Previously on Peter Screws the Pooch: I tell you to stay away from this. Instead, you hacked a multimillion-dollar suit so you could sneak around behind my back doing the one thing I told you not to do." Mr. Stark angrily starts.

"Is everyone okay?" I ask.

"No thanks to you." Mr. Stark spat.

"No thanks to me?" Angered, I jump off the edge and approached Mr. Stark.

"Those weapons were out there, and I tried to tell you about it. But you didn't listen. None of this would've happened if you had just listened to me. If you even cared, you'd actually be here." I snap. The Iron Man suit opens, revealing Mr. Stark. inside. I gasp quietly, and he marches toward me, and I step back.

"I did listen, kid. Who do you think called the FBI, huh? Do you know that I was the only one who believed in you? Everyone else said I was crazy to recruit a 14-year-old kid." Mr. Stark sighed.

"I'm fifteen." I add.

"No, this is where you zip it, all right? The adult is talking. What if somebody had died tonight? Different story, right? 'Cause that's on you. And if you died, I feel like that's on me. I don't need that on my conscience. I trusted you to make sure Kat didn't get in trouble and get thrown into the Raft. You're a good kid, and I trusted you to make sure doesn't get in any trouble. Now she might be thrown in the Raft." Mr. Stark sighed and runs a hand through his hair.

I felt terrible. Mr. Stark trusted me to make sure Kat didn't get in trouble, and what did I do? Get her in a deeper hole than before. I look down to my feet, ashamed.

"Yes, sir." I mumble.

"Yes?" Mr. Stark asks.

"I, I'm sorry. I didn't-" I start.

"Sorry doesn't cut it." Mr. Stark snaps.

"I understand. I just wanted to be like you." I reason.

"And I wanted you to be better. Okay, it's not working out. I'm gonna need the suit back." Mr. Stark holds out a hand, and I gasp.

"For how long?" I stutter.

"Forever." Mr. Stark says. I shake my head. This, can't be happening! "Yeah. Yeah, that's how it works."

"No, no, no... Please, please, please..." I beg.

"Let's have it." Mr. Stark orders.

"You don't understand. Please. This is all I have. I'm nothing without this suit." I try.

"If you're nothing without this suit, then you shouldn't have it. Okay? God, I sound like my dad." Mr. Stark sighs.

"I don't have any other clothes." I sigh, defeated. I guess this is my destiny now.

"Okay, we'll sort that out." Mr. Stark replies.

-Le time skiparoo-

I walk down the hallway of my apartment wearing pink Hello Kitty pajama pants and an oversized NYC tourist T-shirt. I knock on a door, and May answers.

"Hey." I whisper. May inhales deeply and storms inside.

"I've been calling you all day. You didn't answer your phone. You can't do that. Then this ferry thing happens. I've called five police stations." May angrily starts, and I inwardly panic. I walk to May and stand behind her, as she paces around in the living room.

"Five. I called five of your friends." May continues.

"I'm fine." I sigh.

"I called Ned's mother." May says.

"May, I'm okay. Honestly. Just relax. I'm fine." I reason. May stands up, and looks into my face, and I squirm a little under her gaze.

"You. Cut the bullshit. I know you left detention. I know you left the hotel room in Washington. I know you sneak out of this house every night. That's not fine. Peter, you have to tell me what's going on. Just lay it out. It's just me and you." May's tone goes to a gentler one, and my eyes fill up with tears.

"I lost the Stark internship." I sigh.

"What?" May gasps.

"Yeah." I nod.

"What happened?" May asks.

"I just thought that I could work really hard and he could, he would, you know. But I screwed it up." I sigh. I sit down on the sofa next to me, as May comes over and hugs me.

"Oh... It's okay, it's okay. It's okay." May soothes.

"I'm sorry I made you worry." I apologize.

"You know I'm not trying to ruin your life." May adds.

"Yeah, I know." I nod.

"Just... I used to sneak out too." May sympathizes.

"Yeah." I nod again.

"And take a shower. You smell. You smell like garbage." May comments.

"I know." I smile softly.

Kat's POV

I walk into school yet again, with Gwen and Harry by my side.

"So, how is your day?" Harry asks, as we round the corner and see Peter and Ned. Peter's eyes widen when they see us, but I don't pay any attention to it.

"Pretty good. How are you Peter?" I wave, and our little group stands next to them.

"Oh, um. Great. I need to go Kat, some kind of project. Bye!" Peter swiftly leaves and I stand there confused as heck.

"Did I- did I do anything wrong?" I timidly ask Ned.

"No. I'll ask Peter." Ned says.

"No, it's okay, I don't want to bother him" I reply.

"You sure?" Ned asks.

"Yep." I nod. Ned nods, and follows after Peter.

"What was that about?" Gwen asks.

"Yeah. I thought Peter and you were great friends!" Harry says, disappointment etched on his face.

"It's okay guys. It's probably just something that's bothering him." I shrug it off, and continue walking.

"So, are you going to Homecoming?" Gwen asks.

"What kind of question is that? Duh!" I look at her, mock scandalizism on my face.

"I was just wondering." Gwen held up her hand in defeat.

"Welp, see you there then." I nod, and we part ways.

I wished I could say it was the only day that Peter didn't ignore me, or avoid me, but it was up until Friday, the night of Homecoming, that I decided to do anything about it. You might be wondering, what was I doing? I had a dress, something that was quite unexpected of me, but here I was, following Peter, invisible. This might be the worst thing that has even come to my mind. Asking Peter to Homecoming? Idiot. Huge, fat, idiot. The school bell rings as Peter walks out into an empty hallway. I quickly follow him, and see Liz there. I quickly hide behind one of the little pillars, and stay there.

"Hey." Peter greets.

"Hey." Liz nods.

"I thought you had calculus fifth period." Peter gestures to a hallway.

"Yeah, I was just doing some homecoming stuff." Liz explains. Peter nods, then approaches Liz.

"Hey, look, I, uh... I just wanted to apologize about the whole Decathlon thing. I really-" Peter starts. Maybe I was wrong.

"It's fine. Last week, Decathlon was the most important thing, but then I almost died." Liz shrugs.

"No, I, I just mean that... it was not cool, especially... because... I like you." Peter sighs.

"I know." Liz says. I hope she keeps her side of the damn secret. I stare intently at the interaction as Peter stares at her, shocked.

"You do?" Peter manages to stutter out.

"You're terrible at keeping secrets." Liz lies. Oh thank goodness.

"Yeah, you'd be surprised." Peter smiles. They fall into an awkward moment, as they look at each other.

"I got to get to class, but, um, I'd say we should hang out, but I'm gonna be in detention for..." Peter waves his hands, walking backwards.

"Uh-huh." Liz nods.

"...ever, but, um, I guess you already have a date to homecoming." Peter says.

"Actually, I was so busy planning it I never really got around to that part, so..." Liz shakes her head.

"Uh, do you want to go with me?" Peter asks, and I stifle a gasp. I stand there, as the boy I loved essentially broke my heart, without even knowing. I sigh quietly, knowing that as long as people are happy, I guess I'm also happy.

"Yeah. Sure." Liz smiles.

"Really? I mean, uh, great. Cool." Peter stutters.

"Cool." Liz nods.

"I'm actually going that way." Peter says, carrying the hall pass, Peter walks past Liz, leaving the hall. Well, uh. Plan failed... I guess. The bell rang once more, and I leave for my next class, after my free period.

~Time Skip~

Ze dress-

I stare at myself in the mirror, tugging on the skirt part. Pepper was doing my hair into a some kind of fancy updo, as I completely rethink my choice of going to Homecoming as a single pringle. I take my nanotech bracelet from the vanity, and finger it, debating on if I should wear it. I decide to be safer than sorry, and slip the bracelet on.

"Perfect. You look beautiful." Pepper smiles, as she goes and grabs some light makeup.

"Thank you so much Pepper, for everything." I smile, staring at myself in the mirror. It's not mother, father, Wanda, or Pietro, with me, but I am still grateful for everything that Pepper has done for me today.

Ze hair /\

"No problem." Pepper smiles, as she puts on some light makeup and lip gloss.

"No, really. I'm so grateful." I smile, as Pepper finishes the look, and I stand up.

"You look absolutely stunning Kat." Pepper smiles.

"I guess I do. Thank you." I twirl in front of the mirror, as Pepper pulls out a small phone.

"Smile for the picture!" Pepper says, and I turn around and do a V is for Victory sign smiling. What? I learned this in class, and I guess it's my favorite pose now.

"Wow. I wish I could send it to Natasha, you look absolutely amazing." Pepper gushes, as we walk down the stairs. "Now, Happy's going to drop you off at the front of the school, and just make sure you have fun okay?"

"You look nice Kat." Tony greets, as Pepper escorts me to Happy's car. "Gotta admit, Pepper's done a great job."

"I think that your daughter will be very lucky to have Pepper as a mom." I laugh, stepping in the car.

"Well, it's good practice then. Have fun kid." Tony waves, as the car drives out of the driveway.

"Bye!" I wave, and put on my seatbelt.

"So, this is your first Homecoming right kid?" Happy asks.

"Yup. Gotta admit I'm kinda nervous. I fought robots, Team Cap, and murderous training dummies, but a simple high school dance has definitely given me the jitters." I fiddle with my bracelet, playing with the blue and red charms.

"Well kid, there's nothing you should be worried about. I'll drop you off, and I'll be on my way to Avengers Tower, and it's going to be a great night alright?" Happy assures.

"Alright then, I trust you Happy." I smile, and we continue the rest of the ride in silence.

"We're here kid." We turn to see streamers, balloons, and stuff thrown across the entrance, as people were getting out of the cars.

"Oh great. Joy." I smile, as we stop at the side, as a group, I recognized as Sally, and 2 other girls get out. I heave a sigh, and open the door. "Bye Happy."

"Have fun." Happy says.

I walk in the school, and pay for my ticket, walking in the direction of the cafeteria.Thank god Pepper had the idea to get zippered pockets for me, otherwise, I'd be forgetting everything. I open the doors, and see a huge party, and kids already dancing. Oh boy. This is gonna end well.
