With a strangled cry, your eyes jerk open and you instinctively stand to your feet. Your vision goes blank as you dizzily sway on your feet until strong hands steady you.
"Y/n! It's okay, you're safe now!" Dean shouts as he tries to relax you.
You blink a few times to clear your vision before your eyes land on Dean. He looks a bit worse for wear, his hair ruffled and dirt on his face.
"Dean, you look like crap," you manage to say, leaning against him as he helps you stand.
He smirks despite the situation, "Good to see you're still your old self. I thought we lost you for a second."
You notice Sam standing beside him, also looking a bit roughed up.
"Sammy, how ya been?" You ask with a grim smile on your face as Dean helps you walk.
He shakes his head in disbelief, "Been better. Seriously, you've been out for a day and you're asking how I've been?"
"What, did you miss me?" You ask with a grin. You stumble a bit, weak from blood loss. Dean is swift to catch you and you are grateful for his help, if not a bit embarrassed.
"Of course," Sam laughs lightly, opening the car door for you.
Sighing, you sit down on the leather seat, "Well, I couldn't leave you two ruffians on your own. Who knows what kind of trouble you'd get into?"
"C'mon, when have we ever gotten into trouble?" Dean chuckles, hopping into the driver's seat.
"Hmm, I can think of plenty times." You mumble, noticing how tired you really are.
Dean's eyes find yours through the mirror, "You okay?"
"I'll be fine. Just need some rest is all."
Sam also looks at you with concern. You give a half-hearted smile, trying to show that you are fine.
"I know how hard it can be, waking up from a dream like that-"
Dean starts to speak, but you cut him off, "I don't want to talk about it. I'm fine."
He looks at you, not believing you at all.
"Y/n, you sure you don't want to talk about it?"
"I'm sure." Turning to look out the window, you have to force your breathing to remain even.
Remnants of the dream stay in your mind, taunting you. You left behind all you ever wanted. A wonderful paradise, happy and carefree.
You left it for this. To ride in the back of the car, suffering from one-sided affection.
At the motel, it's Sam's turn to sleep on the cot, while you and Dean get the beds. You take a quick shower before changing into your comfy pyjamas and slinking into the soft bed. Dean and Sam are already settled into their beds.
Staring at the ceiling, you feel exhausted. But you don't want to sleep, in case you find yourself dreaming again.
Your eyes eventually close, and sleep attacks.

You stand outside in the rain, looking into a house where Dean sits at a candlelit table. You try to enter the door, but stop when you see someone walk up to him and kiss him on the cheek before sitting to eat with him. Tears stream down your face as you turn away.
Another Dean stands behind you. His face is hard as stone. He looks cold and unfeeling.
"You gave that up, remember? You chose this." He tells you, walking past into the house.
You try to grab onto him, to get him to stay with you, "No, Dean please! Don't leave!"
He shoves you off and glares at you.
"You chose this."
Suddenly, the scene changes, and you find yourself alone again. Alone in an abandoned warehouse...
~
"Y/n, wake up!" Dean says, roughly shaking your shoulders in order to wake you.
You stare up at him, cheeks wet from crying. He exhales in relief, "You're okay."
After a beat of silence, he asks "Do you want to talk about it now?"
Moving over, you make space for Dean to lay down next to you. You shake your head, "It's fine, just a nightmare. I'm sorry that I woke you up."
"Don't apologize."
"Can you stay till I sleep?" You ask tentatively.
He looks uncertain for a brief moment, but then he nods. "Of course."
He gets into a comfortable position beside you, and you do the same. His breathing matches yours, and you try to relax.
"I was happy," you say after a while of silence. Movement from Dean informs you that he heard.
"I-I wanted to stay." Tears start pricking at your eyes again as you confess.
He turns around, so that he lays on his side and faces you. You can barely see his green eyes in the dark.
"What did you see?" He asks the question that you've been dreading.
Inhaling deeply, you decide to answer truthfully. "I saw you. We-we were married and living together. We didn't hunt, and John was still alive. It was perfect."
You can't see his reaction.
"I'm sorry," He says after a time.
"It's fine, I know you don't feel the same way," you answer, already starting to fall asleep again.
"But I do..." Dean says, wrapping his arms around you. Already asleep, you unconsciously snuggle closer to him, inhaling the sweet scent of pie and cologne.
~
Morning came, the sun rose, and Dean was still next to you. His sturdy arms embrace you, and heat radiates from his chest.
Sam is already awake by the time you and Dean wake up.
"Seriously guys? You're telling me that I could've had the other bed?" He complains.
Smirking, you answer, "Sorry Sammy, but this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
Dean turns to you, "It was?"
"Wasn't it?" You ask, puzzled.
"Um, well, I like you Y/n. Like really like you." He mumbles quietly.
Your heartbeat increases, "Really?"
"Yeah."
Finding no words, you kiss him.
"Woah, guys! Get a room," Sam laughs, looking away awkwardly.
"We already have a room Sam." You say pointedly.
He gets the hint and grabs the keys to the car before walking out.
