Amusement parks are happy places. Filled with joyful shouts, laughter, candy, and prizes. The place where people go to find a bit of happiness in a dark world. The whir of the rides is music to the ears, the scent of cotton candy a delight to the nose, the bright colours a pleasure for the eyes.
The amusement park that you often go to is no exception and is always a cheerful place. That's why you love going here when you're sad.
You are not often one to be sad, trying to be an optimist no matter what happens. But everyone has their bad days. The days when everything piles up too high and comes crashing down in a rush of emotion.
Today is one of those days.
Firstly, you woke up late and had to rush to get ready for school. You had to skip breakfast and didn't have time to make your lunch.
Then, school was agony. Usually it isn't too bad, but today it seemed like everyone was attacking you. The regular bullies decided to target you instead of their usual victims, and took joy in humiliating and harassing you. Of course, the teachers did nothing.
In addition to that, there was a pop quiz in your worst subject that you had just barely passed. You had also lost an essay that was due and now you have to redo it.
But, the worst thing about the day was the bullying you had suffered. Name-calling, shoving, elbowing, hitting your books out of your hands as you walk from class to class. These things can be quite damaging, as you know all to well.
You wanted to fight back, to teach those jerks a lesson. But you didn't. It would have only made the situation worse.
As soon as school ended, you grabbed your backpack and ran. You ran to the amusement park - your safe haven - and hid from the world.
Now you sit, with your back against the wall, hiding in a place where no one ever comes. It's a small crook between a food shack, the outer fence, and the haunted house.
The sky is a bit overcast, but there are still many people in the park bustling about.
You tuck your knees against your chest as teardrops fall down your cheeks. You cry quietly, tucked away in your place of safety.
Salty droplets dribble down your cheeks, causing your hair to stick to them. Swiping them away, you continue to sob silently. You feel numb and worn.
Suddenly, you feel a presence beside you. You turn in shock to see a man with brown hair and honey-coloured eyes sitting next to you with a lollipop in his hand. You recognize him as Gabriel, your self-proclaimed guardian angel.
"Hey, it's alright," he says quietly, wrapping his free arm around your shoulders.
His embrace is warm, and you gratefully lean against him.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there for you," he whispers, his lollipop-holding hand drooping with guilt.
You wrap your arms around him and bury your face into his shoulder, "It's fine. You're here now and that's all that matters."
He holds you tightly, before releasing you and standing. "Want to go on some rides? This is an amusement park after all," he invites with his signature smirk.
With a sniff, you accept his outstretched hand and smile.
"First, we gotta get some cotton candy. I mean, it's a must." He continues, still holding your hand as he leads you to the cotton candy line.
You chuckle, "Of course, we have to satisfy that sweet tooth of yours."
He grins, seeing that you're coming back to your old self.
"Naturally," Gabriel sticks the lollipop into his mouth and sucks on it while you wait in line.
After purchasing some fluffy goodness, you sit down on a bench and start eating. Gabe takes the bag away from you and proceeds to stuff his face with the pink and blue candy floss.
"You pig," you joke, snatching the bag back.
"Hey, I wasn't done," he mumbles in protest.
You laugh, "Honestly, you need to lay off the sweets. Maybe try eating a carrot, or broccoli."
His face scrunches up in distaste, "I would never subject my tastebuds to such atrocities."
With a laugh, you finish the candy and make your way to the rollercoaster. Gabriel follows close behind.
"You know, Y/n, you shouldn't listen to those bullies." He says as you wait in line.
"You heard them?"
"Yes, and I want you to know that it isn't true. You are beautiful, kind, smart... I could go on, but then I'd never be able to stop," He says with a twinkle in his eye, but you know he's serious.
You blush, "Thanks Gabe. It means a lot."
"Well, it's the truth, sweet-cheeks."
"Don't call me that!"
"Aww, why not? You're the sweetest girl I've ever met," he grins again, earning a blush and a smack from you.
You spend the rest of the day with Gabe, laughing and joking. Then, you walk home hand-in-hand and he gives you a bone-crushing hug before quickly kissing you on the cheek goodnight.
"Thanks for cheering me up, Gabe."
"Anytime sugar."
